As a result of several
years of research on the Smallwood and Broughton families who migrated to
Eastern Kentucky, combined with the research about
Lemuel Moore of Laurel, Kentucky, a vague
pattern has begun to emerge. The Smallwoods married into the Moore
family in Laurel/Rockcastle, KY and they also married into the Broughton
family in Knox, KY (before the formation of Laurel and Rockcastle
Counties).

SMALLWOODS IN CLAY COUNTY, KENTUCKY
Hezekiah Smallwood was born ca. 1799.
Elizabeth "Betsy" Broughton was born ca. 1807 in Clay, Kentucky.
We're not exactly sure where Hezekiah was born because census records list
several different states in different records, including: North Carolina,
Virginia and Tennessee. Hezekiah and Elizabeth were married March
18, 1822 in Knox, KY by Rev. Blaggrove Hopper. Also married by Rev.
Hopper in Knox, KY were Edy Smallwood and John Edwards on August 6, 1820
and Polly Smallwood and John Lawson on April 13, 1820.
There were no Smallwood families living
in Knox, KY at that time. However, there were Smallwoods living in
Shelby, which is close by and there were Smallwoods in Clay, KY as late as
1817. It is therefore believed
that Hezekiah was related to these Shelby/Clay, KY Smallwoods. None
of these Smallwood families had a son named
Hezekiah, to our knowledge.
And none of them had daughters named Polly or Edy who married into the
Lawson and Edwards families, to our knowledge. Edy, Polly and
Hezekiah seem to be three lost Smallwoods with no identified parents,
living near other Smallwood families. This tends to suggest that
Hezekiah, Edy and Polly were orphans who were living with other families,
or whose father had died and they were living with the mother who had
remarried and was listed under another last name, or they were living in
other regions during census months.
The Smallwoods of Shelby and Clay, KY
were from Maryland and North Carolina. William Smallwood and Sarah
Philpot were listed in Surry, NC on early tax lists (1771) and census
records along with their descendants,
Elijah Sr.,
Elijah Jr.,
John,
William
and
Jonathan. Also
on early tax lists of Surry, NC were several Lawson and Edwards families
and Job Broughton (Elizabeth's grandfather). Land transactions in
1779, 1816 and 1817 referencing Thomas, Martin and Sarah Lawson and
William and Elijah Smallwood were located by another researcher. In
1810 Surry, NC a Gideon Edwards was listed next to
Elijah Jr. and nearby
were a John Edwards and William Edwards Jr. In 1786 Gideon Edwards
appears on the Surry, NC Tax List. Research has shown that Gideon
Edwards was probably the son of William Harrison Edwards and Grizzell
Coleman. Other databases show that Gideon married Anne E. Perkins in
Surry, NC. He was born ca. 1754 in Surry, NC and died ca. 1810,
probably in Surry, NC. The John Edwards listed next to
Elijah Jr. was age 45+ in
1810, therefore he was born before 1765. This places him in the same
generation with Gideon and he may have been his brother. Gideon's
descendants may have gone to Pittsylvania, Virginia.
Lawson and Edwards families were also
found in Knox and Laurel, KY in 1820 --> listed near the Broughtons.

of them were age 26 to 45. Thomas Lawson had one young male in his
household, age 10 to 16 (born between 1794 and 1800). Elijah
Smallwood had 2 females age 0-10 and 1 age 10-16. The names of his
daughters are not known, however the 2 females age 0-10 could be Edy and
Polly.

The female age 10-16 could be another
Smallwood who was found in Surry, NC marriage records - Dillaney
Smallwood. Since she was married in 1818, she was probably born
before 1800. She and her husband moved to Illinois sometime between
1837 and 1844.

In the 1820 Federal Census a John Lawson
was listed next to Job Broughton in Knox, KY. On the other side of
Job were John, William and Arthur Edwards. John Lawson was age 18-26
and the oldest female was in the same age range. Job Broughton was
the son of Willoughby Broughton who was found on the 1771 Surry, NC tax
list along with Elijah Smallwood and several Lawsons. Job Broughton
was in Surry, NC in 1790. A Joe or Jos. Broughton (age 45+) was in
Clay, KY in 1810 along with William Broughton and Elijah Smallwood (son of
Wm. Smallwood and Sarah Philpot). A younger Joe or Job Broughton was in
Shelby, KY in the 1820 census along with William Smallwood age 45+ and
John Smallwood age 26-45.

A census analysis for the Surry, NC
Smallwood families shows several possibilities for the father of
Hezekiah.
The following analyses are color coded
to more easily identify the individual in the census records listed below.
ELIJAH
SMALLWOOD, SR.
In 1790
Elijah Smallwood Sr. had 1 male
under the age of 16 in his household. The young male was probably
Elijah Jr since he was not listed separately. A John Smallwood was
also in 1790 Surry NC. He will be discussed later. In 1800
Elijah Sr. had 3
males under the age of 26 in his household. His known sons were
Jonathan (b. 1763) and Elijah
Jr (b. ca. 1770). Elijah
Jr. was listed separately in 1800 and an unnamed Smallwood age
26-45 was also listed separately as was a John Smallwood age 26-45.
The 3 young males in Elijah Sr's. household are unidentified. One
was born 1790-1800, one was born 1784-1790 and one was born 1774-1784.
It is not known if these were sons, grandsons, nephews or unrelated
children. Several male Smallwoods have been found "floating" around
Kentucky with unidentified parents, including
Hezekiah (1799), Elijah C.
(ca. 1790), Russell C. (1800-1810), John (b. before 1794), and another
Elijah (b. ca. 1809).
Elijah Sr. had a brother John born 1732
who married Anne Marlow. He died about 1765 and he may be the
grandfather of some of these "floating" Smallwood males, although it
appears that some of his descendants went to Georgia and Tennessee.
(Some of Elijah Sr's children also went to Georgia and Tennessee).
Another of Elijah Sr's brothers (James) died 1783 in Frederick, VA.
Nothing is known about him or his descendants. It is believed his
brother Elisha was already in Georgia, so these 3 unidentified males are
probably not his children.
Elijah Smallwood Sr. died about 1810 in
Surry, NC, probably before the 1810 census was taken, since he was not
listed.
NEW INFORMATION RECEIVED AUGUST 18,
2005:
An email was received from a Smallwood
researcher who provided a theory that Elijah Smallwood Sr. had a daughter
named Asenath who married William Hill. There are source documents
indicating her maiden name was Smallwood and that she was born probably in
Surry, NC. This researcher indicated that they lived in Henry, VA
for a short time and in Sullivan, TN from 1809 to 1847.
(NOTE: An Elisha Smallwood was listed on the Revolutionary War Pension
Records of Sullivan, TN in 1835. He was not listed in census
records, so he may have been living with Asenath. This is a great
mystery because all the known Elishas who were old enough to service in
the Rev. War were dead by 1835. The record was only a notation, with
no details. It is possible that the recipient of the pension was the
widow and not the solider. If this is the case, it could have been
Sarah, the widow of Elijah Sr. - if the spelling of the first name was
incorrect) A search for
further information revealed a family tree listing on Ancestry.com for
Hescencia Smallwood who married William Hardin Hill. They were
located in the 1850 census in Claiborne, TN. William's wife's name
was spelled "Lealeth". In the 1860 census, she was located in
Claiborne, TN with the spelling "Areneth". Apparently, William Hill
died before 1860.
The known children of Asenath and
William were Greenberry (b. Mar 15, 1805 in VA), Foster (b. ca 1809 in
VA), William Hardin Jr. (b. ca. 1810 Sullivan, TN), James (b. ca.
1810 in TN), and Harriet (b. ca 1812 in TN).
An Elisha Smallwood b. 1790-1800 was in
Sullivan, TN in 1830 on the same page with Griffith and Daniel Ragan.
Listed nearby were Wm. and Foster Hill. In 1840 William Hill was in
Sullivan, TN two pages away from Griffith and Daniel Ragan. The Ragans are
connected to the Surry, NC Smallwoods. Elijah Sr's son Jonathan married
Mary Indes "India" Howard there before 1790. Jonathan died in 1812 and
India remarried to Owen Ragan Sr. (b. 1757). I'm not sure which
Daniel Ragan this was but Owen Ragan had three 3rd cousins named Daniel.
It is not proven that Asenath/Hescencia
was the daughter of Elijah Sr., however, it is quite likely. There
were other familiar families living near them in TN.

however,
Elijah Sr.
was over the age of 60 when

ELIJAH
SMALLWOOD, JR.
In the 1800 Surry NC census Elijah Jr.
had 2 males under the age of 10 (1790-1800), and 1 male age 26-45.
The young males could have been Lee (which may be a nickname for Elisha or
Elijah) (b. ca. 1799-1810) and
Hezekiah (b. 1799).
NOTE: I originally thought that
Russell B. Smallwood (b. ca 1795) may have been the son of Elijah Jr.
However, I just found a record on the LDS web site showing that
Russell's father was William Benjamin Smallwood, b. 1773 of Baltimore, MD.
His middle name was listed as "Bean". A Wm. Smallwood was
listed in the 1800 Baltimore, MD census. Also listed was Ann
Smallwood. Margaret Logan Briscoe who m. Russell may have been
related to John/Philip Briscoe who m. Mary's sister Chloe. This
makes sense, since the son of Chloe Hanson and John /Philip Briscoe
(Samuel Hanson Briscoe) was born in Baltimore, MD in 1815. I don't
have information about this William. If anyone knows about him,
please
contact me.
UPDATE: new information reveals that Chloe
Hanson was probably the sister of Mary Hanson who possibly married William
Smallwood.

Elijah Jr. may have been in Grayson,
Virginia in 1830. Grayson County is located on the southern border
of Virginia near Sullivan, Tennessee and near Russell, Scott
and Smyth Counties in Virginia. However, this profile does not fit well
because it is believed Elijah had a daughter Susannah born ca. 1815 and
she is not in this household. (This may have been another
Elijah, son of James Bidon Smallwood.)

In 1840
Elijah Jr. was in Smyth,
Virginia. (This may have been the son of James Bidon Smallwood,
but I believe it was
Elijah Jr.). Also there was a John Smallwood age 20-30 with a female
age 20-30 in his household. In 1850
Elijah Jr.
was still in
Smyth, Virginia with wife Susan and probable son or grandson John in the household.
There was no male the age of John in
Elijah Jr's 1820 household, so it is
likely that John was a grandson or nephew.

A POSSIBLE SCENARIO:
The Lawsons, Edwards and Broughtons were
friends with the Smallwoods in Surry, NC; the Broughtons moved to Knox KY
and some of the Edwards and Lawsons followed soon thereafter; two
daughters of
Elijah Smallwood Jr. in Surry, NC are "matched"
with young men in Knox KY where there were few single women; Polly and Edy
are transported from Surry, NC to Knox, KY to marry John Lawson and John
Edwards. Same thing with Hezekiah. Or, they were childhood friends and
felt compelled to marry someone they knew well or had a hankerin' for when
they were younger.
I don't think it's a coincidence that
Elijah Smallwood is surrounded by Lawsons and Edwards in Surry NC and the Broughtons are surrounded by
Lawsons and Edwards in Knox, KY. Notice John Edwards has two males his own
age in his household in 1820 Knox - one of them could have been
Hezekiah
living with his brother-in-law and sister.
I'm starting to doubt my theory that Hez was the son of Jonathan - I think
he may have been the son of
Elijah Jr., or at least was raised by him.
There are some incidental connections between the Smallwoods of Russell,
Smyth and Scott, Virginia - some of these Smallwood and allied families
were in Missouri and possibly connected to
Hezekiah there.
This causes some confusion because I believe Hezekiah was part of the
Surry, NC group due to the fact that Job Broughton was in Surry, NC and
Knox, KY and
Hezekiah married
Job's granddaughter. The Smallwoods of Russell, Smyth and Scott,
Virginia may be the descendants of James Bidon Smallwood. I suppose
it is reasonable that
Hezekiah would be
living in Missouri near descendants of James Bidon Smallwood since
Hezekiah's probable
father was the cousin of James Bidon Smallwood, one generation removed.
However, I'm proceeding on the assumption that the Elijah who was in
Smyth, VA was

Conclusion:
Hezekiah (b. 1799)
could have been living in
Elijah Jr's
household in 1800, 1810 and 1820.
Elizabeth Broughton's grandfather was in Surry, NC on the same tax list
with
Elijah Smallwood Sr.
in 1777, therefore,
Hezekiah
could have been the son of
Elijah Jr.
JOHN SMALLWOOD
In the 1790 Surry, NC census, John
Smallwood had 1 male under the age of 16 in his household. In the
1800 census John had 1 male age 10-16 and 1 male age 26-45 in his
household. Therefore, he was born before 1774. We are not certain
who this John was.
It is known that the John who married
Jemima Smith was in Clay, KY in 1808 when they were married there and it
is believed this was his first marriage. Therefore, the mysterious
John born before 1774 would not be him. This mysterious John
disappears from Surry NC after 1800, but a John Smallwood appears in
Shelby, KY in 1810 age 26-45 along with Samuel Smallwood age 16-26 and
Randolph Smallwood age 26-45 - both sons of William Smallwood and Sarah
Philpot. This John was born between 1775 and 1794, so the birth year
is not quite the same but very close. The family profiles also seems
reasonable, so these two Johns could be the same person. He may have
been the father of the John who was living with
Elijah Jr. in Smyth,
Virginia.
In the 1820 census of Shelby, KY a John
Smallwood is listed along with a William Smallwood age 45+ with a female
age 45+ and no children. It was assumed that this was William
Smallwood and Sarah Philpot, however a William Smallwood age 45+ was also
in Wilkes, GA in 1820 and another researcher believes this was William
and Sarah.
Conclusion: It is not certain who
the mysterious John Smallwood was who was born before 1774, however,
Hezekiah (b. 1799) could have been his son.
JONATHAN SMALLWOOD
Jonathan only appears in the 1810
census using the name "Jonathan". He was in Surry, NC with 2 males under the age of 10.
It is known that
Jonathan
married Mary Indes "India" Howard in Surry, NC.
A record of their marriage bond was located there, with no date. The
oldest male in his household was age 26-45, indicating that Jonathan was
born between 1765 and 1784. Others have given the birth date of
January 2, 1763. According to other researchers,
Jonathan
died
between 1812 and 1824, however, some researchers show a will probated in
1812 in Surry, NC. I have not yet seen a copy or extract of this
will, and would love to have it. If you know where I can obtain a
copy of this will, please contact me at
oregongal9@aol.com
Originally, I had thought that the
unknown John shown in 1790 and 1800 was
Jonathan
going by the name of
"John". If he was born in 1763, it would make sense that he would be
married and have a family in 1790 - and -
Jonathan
does not show up
elsewhere. I decided to take a closer look at the family profiles of
the young individuals listed for John and Jonathan - based on the
temporary assumption that they were the same person.
In 1790 - 1 male born before or during
1790 and 2 females (at least 1 assumed to be a child)
In 1800 - 1 male born 1783 - 1790 (or during) and 1 female born 1783 -
1790
In 1810 - 2 males born 1799 - 1810 (or during) and 1 female born 1799 -
1810
Analysis of the young males:
The male born before or during 1790 in
the 1790 census could be the same male born between 1783 and 1790 (or
during) in the 1800 census. In the 1810 census, this male is no
longer in the household. He would be age 20-27, so this makes sense.
The two males in the 1810 census were
born between 1799 and 1810 (or during) and these males would be at least 9
years younger than the first young male.
Analysis of the young females:
The young female born before or during
1790 in the 1790 census could be the same female born between 1783 and
1790 (or during) in the 1800 census. In the 1810 census, this female
is no longer in the household. She would be age 20-27, so this makes
sense. Other evidence discussed below indicates that
Jonathan
married Mary Indes "India" Howard between 1796 and early 1800.
Therefore, she was probably his second wife. If John/
Jonathan
was a
widower in 1796-1800 then he could have been a widower in 1790. If
so, then the two females in his 1790 household could have been daughters.
The young female born between 1799 and
1810 (or during) in the 1810 census would be at least 9 years younger than
the first young male and female.
Summary
1 son born between 1783 and 1790 (or
during) - gone from household by age 23-27
1 daughter born between 1783 and 1790 (or during) - gone from household by
age 23-27
2 sons born between 1799 and 1810 (or during)
1 daughter born between 1799 and 1810 (or during)
Further Analysis and Comment
If these were the same families, the
above summary looks as if they went up to 9 years between their first two
children and their last three children. This suggests several
possibilities including:
1.
Jonathan
was married previously and had the first two children
from a previous marriage
2. They had children in that 9-year period, but they died young.
3. They did not have any children during that 9-year period.
4. They are not the same family
Some Further Investigation Work on
the Marriage of Jonathan and India
On the marriage bond for
Jonathan
Smallwood and India Howard, a Stephen Ring is listed as the bondsman.
A Rachel Smallwood married a Stephen Ring about 1796 in Rowan Co, NC.
This Stephen was born about 1775 and Rachel was born Sept, 1775. If
this was the same Stephen Ring who was a bondsman for the marriage bond of
Jonathan
and India, then it is likely that their marriage did not occur
until at least 1796, when Stephen would have been age 21.
The father of Stephen Ring is not known,
however there was a Thomas Ring in 1790 Stokes, NC and in 1800 Knox, KY.
It is possible he was Stephen's father since others in the
Smallwood/Philpot group went there or near there. Also, a message
board posting indicates that Thomas Ring was from Ireland and came to
Granville, NC after arriving in America in about 1765. Granville was
another county near Surry where the Smallwoods were known to live.
It is not known if Rachel Smallwood was related to the Smallwoods featured
in this narrative, but Rowan, NC was the parent county of Surry, NC, so it
is likely she was related. She may have been one of the unidentified
daughters of Elijah Smallwood Sr.
To summarize, since it is likely that
Stephen Ring who married Rachel Smallwood was the same one who was a
bondsman for the marriage bond of
Jonathan
and India, and since he was
born about 1775 and would not be age 21 until about 1796, it is possible
that
Jonathan
was married to India sometime during or after 1796. If
this is the case, then Jonathan would have been at least 33 years old and
this is quite old for a first marriage. In 1796 India would have
been about 26 to 27 years old. It is entirely possible that the John
who was listed in 1790 Surry NC was
Jonathan
, going by the name John, and
married to a first wife with whom he had at at least one son and one
daughter. And it is possible that he married India between 1796 and
1799 and was listed as John in the 1800 census with 1 son age 10-16
(Hezekiah) and one daughter age 10-16 (Mary).
It is presumed the older son from the theoretical first marriage was gone
from the household by 1810. Other postings show that
Jonathan
had a
daughter Mary born about
1790 in NC who married John Carnes before 1808. Another
posting indicates a possible daughter Elizabeth born about 1800-1801 in NC
who married John Holder in 1820 Surry NC. If this is true, then she
was probably living with Elijah Sr.
or William, since they were the only Smallwoods in 1820 Surry NC. I tend to think this Elizabeth
was probably the daughter of
Elijah Jr. or William. More about Mary
and Elizabeth later. Using the analysis from above, here is a
possible scenario:
1 son born between 1783 and 1790 (or
during) - gone from household by 1810 - unknown
1 daughter born between 1783 and 1790 - gone from household by 1810
- Mary
2 sons born between 1799 and 1810 (or during) -
Hezekiah and unknown
1 daughter born between 1799 and 1810 (or during) - Edy
There is other evidence to support the
theory that
Jonathan
was the father of
Hezekiah (b. 1799). This
evidence is entirely circumstantial and is not supported by documentation,
and could be disproved if his will
is ever obtained, however, it is quite compelling. Since
India is a rather unusual name, I decided to do a search of the 1850
Federal Census for that name. I was not expecting to find much,
especially someone who was living near
Hezekiah in that year.
However, much to my delight, I found an India Ragan, age 80, living in
Whitley County, Kentucky - very close to
Hezekiah and Elizabeth who were
in Rockcastle County, Kentucky. India was living with Owen Ragan,
age 40, who was born in KY, and his family. A further search on the
Ragan family revealed that his father, Owen Sr., was in Knox, KY from at
least 1817 to 1830. Owen Sr. was born about 1757 in Granville Co,
NC. His father was there in 1755, along with Mary (Grant?)
Smallwood, believed to be the widow of William and mother of the William
who married Sarah Philpot. Owen Sr. died after 1835, probably in Sumner
Co, Tennessee. He was listed there in 1832 and 1835 on the list of
Revolutionary War Pensioners.
In 1777 Owen Sr's brothers, Jesse and
Nathan, were in Caswell County, NC along with Wyatt Stubblefield, the
grand uncle of Lemuel Moore's probably wife, Ann Stubblefield. In
1790 Owen and his brothers were in Caswell Co, NC along with Wyatt
Stubblefield, James-John-Joseph-Richard and Robert Moore,
William-Hezekiah-Thomas-William-John and Nathan Rice, and Job Broughton.
In 1799 Owen Ragan was taxed in Greene
Co, TN in Captain William White's Company along with Darby Ragan (Owen's
2nd cousin) and Rice Moore. Rice was the uncle of Lemuel Moore whose
daughter, Mary, married Hezekiah Smallwood's son, Elisha in Rockcastle,
KY. Also on the Greene Co, TN tax list in surrounding years were
other familiar names, including:
Moses Moore who went to Laurel Co, KY -
relationship to Lemuel is unknown, if any
Samuel Wyatt who went to Knox, KY and may have been allied with the Moore
family
William Moore, Lemuel Moore's possible relative
Rev. David Rice - the 1st cousin of Lemuel Moore's probable grandmother
John Ragan, Owen Ragan Sr's probable brother
William and Johanna Howard - may have been related to India Howard
David Prewitt - the grandfather of Joseph Pruitt who married Lemuel
Moore's daughter Nancy
In 1810, Owen Sr. and his two brothers,
Jesse and Nathan, were in Person County, NC. In his household was a
young male age 10 to 16. This could have been
Hezekiah Smallwood.
1810 census - Person, NC
Owen Ragan (01001-01101) age 45+
also there: Jesse Ragan and Nathan Ragan
By January 7, 1817, Owen was in Knox Co,
KY where he was listed on a land transaction.
In the 1820 census, Owen was in Big
Poplar Creek, Knox, KY. Also in Knox in 1820 were Will, Job and
Woodward Broughton, Thomas Ring, Rev. Blaggrove Hopper and Christopher
Howard.
1820 Census
Owen Ragan (300011-00102) age 45+ (one of the young males was his
son Owen Jr, born about 1810. The other young males and the young
female are unknown. The male age 26-45 could have been an older son,
possibly William, with whom Owen may have lived when he was in Sumner TN.
(A William Ragan was there in 1830). Notice there is no male the age
of
Hezekiah Smallwood (1799) in his household. This could happen if
Hezekiah was living elsewhere working on a farm, for example. He
would have been age 20-21.
In 1830 Owen Sr. was in Knox, KY along with
David, Jesse, Job, William and William Broughton Sr, Ephraim, Alexander,
Isaac, Thomas, Joab and Levi Moore, Rev. Blaggrove Hopper and Betsy
Howard, probable widow of Christopher. He is listed as age 90-100,
which does not match other records, so it is believed to be an error.
1830 Knox KY Owen Ragan
(102100100001-2100100111)
Owen Ragan seems to appear just about
every place where the Smallwoods, Broughtons and Moores went between 1757
and 1830. Almost his entire lifetime, was spent living near
one of these allied families, and marrying one of them. There is
more evidence to support the theory that Owen Ragan was the step-father of
Hezekiah Smallwood, including other census records where his relatives and
descendants were living near other allied families.
As mentioned earlier, the evidence
is circumstantial, but I believe it is quite strong evidence that
Hezekiah
was the son of
Jonathan
Smallwood and Mary Indes "India" Howard.
Conclusion:
Hezekiah could have been the
son of
Jonathan
Smallwood and Mary Indes "India" Howard.
WILLIAM SMALLWOOD
There appears to be another
William Smallwood
that is not yet identified. He was in Surry, NC in 1810 and 1820
along with
Elijah Jr.
and was born 1764-1775. He had several young
male and females in the household who are also unidentified. He may
have been in Hawkins, TN or Sevier, TN in 1830. He may also have
been the father of several unknown Smallwoods who were in Northeast
Tennessee during and after 1830, including John (1830 Sevier TN), William
(1830 Sevier, TN), Andy K. (1840-1860 McNairy, TN), Churchwell B.
(1840-1860 McNairy, TN).
This
William could not be
William Jr, son of William Smallwood and Sarah Philpot because he was
married in 1816 in Clay, Kentucky and was in Georgia by 1820.
A Smallwood with no first name was
listed in 1800 Surry, NC, age 26-45. This could have been
William. He
was listed along with Elijah
Sr.,
Elijah Jr.
and John Smallwood. If this
was William, then he
was age 26-45 in 1800, the same generation as
Elijah Jr.
and John. Since he was there in
1810 and 1820, I will assume the unnamed Smallwood in 1800 was
William. In
1800 there were no young males in his household and one young female age
10-16. In 1810 there were 5 males under the age of 10, 1 male age
10-16 and 1 female age 16-26 in addition to the two adults. Since
1810 is the year that Elijah
Sr. died and he had 3 young males and 3 young females in his
household in 1800, it is possible that some of them were living with
William in 1810.
Since
William was in the
same generation as
Elijah Jr.
and John/Jonathan, I am
assuming that he was a son of
Elijah Sr.
In 1800 there were no young males the
age of
Hezekiah
in William's
household, so it is probable that he was not the father of
Hezekiah.
Conclusion: If
William
was in
Hawkins, TN in 1830, this could be a possible connection between him and Lemuel Moore.
Hezekiah's son married the daughter of Lemuel, so
Hezekiah
could have been the nephew or brother of
William.
It is more likely that he was a nephew.
MARY SMALLWOOD and JOHN
CARNES
Mary Smallwood, b.
1790 in NC, married John Carnes before 1808 and was in Georgia by 1808
where her first child was born in that year - according to other research.
The second child was born 1810 in Hall County, Georgia. If
Mary was the daughter of
Jonathan
Smallwood, why was she in Georgia by
1808? Jonathan was still in Surry, NC in 1810. William
Smallwood and Mary Grant had other descendants who were in Georgia. Elisha
Smallwood, the son of William Smallwood and Sarah Philpot, was in Georgia
by 1822. Prior to that he was in Clay Co, KY. Their son
William who married Mary "Polly" Clark, had a child in Habersham, Georgia
in 1820. Prior to that he was in Clay Co, KY. Their son James,
who married Cora, was in Georgia by 1818 when his first child was born
there in that year. Elisha
Smallwood and Tabitha Humphreys were in Georgia by 1780 and they had a
daughter named Mary.
According to a listing on
the LDS web site,
Jonathan
Smallwood and Mary Indes Howard were the
parents of Mary Magdaline Ann or Polly Smallwood who was born about 1790
and died about 1869 in Carroll, Georgia. Another listing shows she
died in Comanche, Texas. A "John" Smallwood had a daughter age 0-10
in the 1790 Surry, NC census and a daughter age 0-10 in the 1800 Surry, NC census, therefore,
she would have been born in 1790. Census records for Mary Smallwood
Carnes indicates a birth year of 1790, so this fits the profile.
However, there is no documentation on this information and the facts
stated in the paragraph above make it questionable that Mary was the
daughter of Jonathan, unless she left his household and went to Georgia
with others before 1808. In 1807 Mary would have been age 17, so
this is
possible.
It is curious how Mary
could have been in Georgia by 1808. Joseph Carnes, the father of
John Carnes who married Mary, was listed in the 1800 Federal Census in
Montgomery, NC
along with an Edmund Carnes, presumed to be his son. It is assumed
that John Carnes was there also, since he would have been about age 14 and
probably living with his parents - and Mary would have been about age 10,
presumably living with her parents in Surry, NC. I know of no
Smallwood families who were in Montgomery, NC during that time period,
and Montgomery is a distance south of Surry. Remember -
Jonathan died in about 1812, presumably in Surry, NC. If she married
John Carnes in Surry County (which has not been reported by any researcher
to my knowledge) then the Carnes family must have been in or
near Surry, NC in about 1807 when she was presumably married. Why
would they go from Granville, south to Montgomery, north to Surry and
then south to Georgia?
UPDATE December 14, 2005:
The county formation map for North Carolina shows that Montgomery County
was formed in 1777 from Anson County which was directly south of Rowan
County. Surry County was formed from Rowan County. Therefore,
it is feasible that the Carnes family went a slight distance north to
Surry Co to join groups who were getting ready to migrate to Georgia.
The Carnes family may have connected with the Smallwood family at that
time, since Joseph Carnes probably knew the Smallwoods when he was in
Granville, NC in 1784-1786. Mary's father, Jonathan Smallwood, was
still alive and living in Surry, NC until 1812 and she married John Carnes
before 1808. Jonathan Smallwood's uncle, Elisha, was in Fayette, GA
by 1780. He had been in Orange, NC as late as 1775, before going
south to Georgia. Orange County is between Granville and Rowan
Counties. It is possible that he was involved in forming or leading
a group of migrants that wanted to move from North Carolina to Georgia.
Correction: This web
page (in the paragraph above this one) was incorrect. It indicated
that Joseph Carnes was in Mecklenburg Co, NC - it should have been
Montgomery Co.
I can find no marriage
record for John Carnes and Mary or Polly Smallwood - which does not mean
it did not occur. If the Mary Smallwood who married John Carnes was
born 1790 in Surry, NC, it is quite likely that she was the daughter of
Jonathan
or
Elijah Sr., for they are the only Smallwoods listed there in
that year with unidentified daughters born ca. 1790. Because the
person who sent this listing to the LDS web site seemed to be so sure of
the identity of Mary Smallwood, and because John Carnes was in Habersham
GA in 1820 and 1830 (where Wm. Smallwood and Mary Clark were married) I
will assume, for the time being, that this information is correct. A
more detailed discussion of this is contained in the next segment.

POLLY SMALLWOOD
Polly Smallwood who married
John Lawson April 13, 1820 in Knox, KY is unidentified. From census
records, it appears that she was born between 1794 and 1804 (1820 census,
Stinking Creek, Knox, KY). Since she was married in Knox, KY by
the same minister who presided over the marriage of
Hezekiah Smallwood and
Elizabeth Broughton, she was probably closely related to
Hezekiah, perhaps a
sister. She may have been the daughter of one of
Elijah Smallwood
Senior's children who died before 1820, and she may have been living with
another family. These possibilities are all valid. However,
she could also be the daughter of
Jonathan
Smallwood who died about 1812
in Surry, NC. Since I am assuming that the information about Mary
Smallwood and John Carnes is correct, it is unlikely she was the daughter
of
Jonathan
since Polly is a nickname for Mary and he would not name two
daughters the same name.
Elijah Smallwood Jr. had
several unidentified children in his household in Surry NC in 1800 and
1810. Polly could have been one of the unidentified females,
however, Elijah Jr. was listed in the 1820 Surry, NC census and Polly was
married in April 1820 in Knox, KY. It seems unlikely that she would
be married in KY when her family was still in Surry. Although, it is
possible that Elijah owned property in NC and was listed there because of
that, when he may have been in KY (although no census records exist for
him in KY).
William Smallwood and Mary
Clark were in Clay, KY from at least 1816 (marriage) until 1817 when their
first child was born there. Their second child was born 1820 in
Habersham, GA. This creates a possible connection between the
Smallwoods who were in Clay, KY and others who were in Habersham, GA.
Mary Smallwood and John Carnes were in Habersham, GA in 1820 and 1830.
Also in Habersham, GA in 1820 was John Holder who married Elizabeth
Smallwood, reported to be the daughter of John Smallwood of Surry, NC.
It is presumed that the Carnes and Holders knew William Smallwood and Mary
Clark who were from Clay, KY.
This possible connection
between assumed children of
Jonathan
Smallwood and those who were in Clay,
KY is quite interesting because the three Smallwood marriages that took
place in Knox, KY from 1820 to 1822 (Polly, Edy and
Hezekiah), took place
in a location where the possible widow of
Jonathan
Smallwood was living
with her 2nd husband, Owen Ragan. In 1820 Jonathan's presumed
daughter Mary was in GA near his first cousin, William who married Mary
Clark. With Jonathan's possible widow living in Knox, KY and his
possible daughter living near William who was in Clay, KY in 1816 - and
the fact that Hezekiah Smallwood who married Elizabeth Broughton in Knox,
KY in 1822 went "back" to Clay, KY after his marriage - it is very likely
that Hezekiah was somehow connected to the families of William
Smallwood/Mary Clark and
Jonathan
Smallwood/Mary Howard.
William Smallwood married
Mary Clark in Clay, KY 1816 however he was listed in Franklin, GA along
with the father of John Carnes as early as 1810. Possibly, William
Smallwood traveled back to Clay, KY to get married, or he traveled back
and forth between Clay, KY and GA. William Smallwood's uncle, Elisha
Smallwood who married Tabitha Humphreys, was in GA as early as 1780.
So, it is possible that William traveled back and forth between his
uncle's place of residence and Clay, KY. His brother Elisha who
married Sarah Clark in 1809 Clay, KY may have done a similar thing for he
ended up in GA by 1822.
Exactly how
Hezekiah, Polly
and Edy fit into this picture is difficult to figure out. It makes
sense that they were the children of
Elijah Jr., but that doesn't seem to
fit with the location of their marriages and his location at the time.
We must keep in mind that many families in those days were traveling back
and forth between various locations, exploring newly civilized areas and
looking for deals on good land.
Polly may have been the
daughter of one of Elijah Smallwood Senior's
children who died before
1820, the daughter of Elijah Jr., the daughter of the unknown William, or she may have been the daughter of
Jonathan (but that is unlikely). Since two other daughters of
Jonathan Smallwood have been tentatively identified, I am categorizing
Polly as a possible daughter of
Elijah Jr.
Whoever was the father of Polly
was most probably also the father of
Hezekiah. The following
survey illustrates this point - John Lawson married Polly Smallwood:
1839 Laurel Co, KY Deeds pg 55 of

EDY SMALLWOOD
Edy Smallwood who married
John Edwards August 6, 1820 in Knox, KY is also unidentified. From
census records, it appears that she was born between 1794 and 1804 (1820
census, Stinking Creek, Knox, KY). It is uncertain if this was the
correct John Edwards family since they were not married until August and
the census was usually done in about June. Also, there was one male
age 0-10 in the household and if they were married in 1820, there would
probably not be a child in 1820 (although it could happen). In 1830
a John Edwards was in Knox, KY. He and the oldest female were age
30-40. Again, it is not known if this was the John Edwards who
married Edy Smallwood.
Edy fits the profile to be
the second daughter of
Jonathan
Smallwood, as does Elizabeth who married
John Holder and Polly who married John Lawson. It is simply not known who Edy's
parents were, so the mystery remains unsolved. She may have been the
daughter of one of Elijah Smallwood Senior's children who died before
1820, the daughter of Elijah Jr., the daughter of the unknown William, or she may have been the daughter of
Jonathan (but that is unlikely). Since two other daughters of
Jonathan
Smallwood have been tentatively identified, I am categorizing Edy
as a possible daughter of Elijah Jr.
In 1840 a John Edwards was
living in Laurel, KY, age 30-40. There was no older female in the
household, so his wife may have died by then. Next to him was
William Edwards born 1810-1820, believed to be his son. William
married Marilla Elliott (per LDS web site) and was still living in Laurel,
KY in 1850. If you have information about this family please contact

ELIZABETH SMALLWOOD and
JOHN HOLDER
Elizabeth Smallwood married
John Holder on Nov. 28, 1820 in Surry, NC. It is reported by others
that Elizabeth was the daughter of John Smallwood of Surry, NC. It
is probable that she was the sister of Mary Smallwood who married John
Carnes. A John Holder was located in the 1820 census in Habersham,
Georgia along with a John Carnes. It is not known if this John was
the one who married Elizabeth. In 1830 John Holder is found in Maury,
Tennessee, age 30-40 and John Carnes is still in Habersham, Georgia.
A message board posting indicates that they had 11 children as they
migrated from Surry County, NC to middle TN. Elizabeth was born ca.
1801 in Surry, NC.
Jonathan
Smallwood had a female in his household
age 0-10 in 1810. This could have been Elizabeth and the John who
was referred to as her father could have been
Jonathan
.
In 1860 John and Elizabeth
are found living in Perry, Tennessee. No other Smallwood families
are listed near their places of residence. No documentation for
Elizabeth's relationship to John Smallwood has been found, but since the
researcher seems to be so sure that she was his daughter, I assume this is
correct.
The following message was
posted on the internet connecting the Holder family to the Pigg family:
Mary Salisbury is
looking for the parents of John Holder b. about 1800 from Pittsylvania
County, VA. He married, Elizabeth Smallwood 28 Nov 1820 Surry County, NC,
b abt 1801 dau of John Smallwood. They had 11 children as they migrated
from Surry County, NC to middle TN. The 5th child, Rebecca "Becky" Holder,
b Feb 1832 Maury County, TN, is my 2GGmother. The Holders seemed to be
connected with the Pigg Family as they migrated with them, & intermarried
with them. Becky married John Clebourne Pigg, son of Clayborn Pigg, whose
last wife was Ann Holder. Any clues or help I may receive will be most
appreciated.
There was a William Pigg in
1790 & several other Pigg families 1800 & 1810 Surry, NC living near
Elijah and John/Jonathan Smallwood, Job Broughton, Russell Carn and
several Holder families. This is further evidence that Elizabeth was the
daughter of John/Jonathan, as claimed in the message and elsewhere.

WILKINSON SMALLWOOD
Wilkinson Smallwood is
yet another mystery. His birth year is also in question. There
appears to be a least three
WilkinsonSmallwoods connected to the same
family in Missouri.
Wilkinson #1: was
born ca. 1797, 1821 or 1822 in Kentucky. He married Eliza Johnson
Sep. 1, 1842 in Laurel or Rockcastle, KY (this is where
Hezekiah and
Elizabeth lived). His widow Eliza applied for a Mexican War pension
which claimed that he was age 64 when he died in 1862. However, the
1860 census indicates a birth year of ca. 1821. If he served in the
Mexican War (1846-1848) and was age 64 in 1862, he would have been about
age 50 during that war. It would be unusual for a person to serve in
a war at the age of 50 unless he was a commissioned officer, which he
probably was not. Therefore, I believe he was born ca. 1821/1822 and
not 1797.
Wilkinson #2: married
Sarah Catherine Smallwood "Kate" Ambrose Feb. 25, 1862 in Clark, Missouri.
They had one known child, Wilkinson born Dec. 4, 1862. Wilkinson #2
died in the Civil War in August 1862. Military records indicate he
was age 21 during his war service, therefore, his birth year was about
1840.
Wilkinson #3: was born Dec.
4, 1862 in Clark, Missouri. In 1880 Scotland, Missouri, he was
living with a Louis Smallwood who was born ca. 1860 in Missouri.
Also in the household was the wife of Louis, Julia A., born ca. 1860 in
Ohio. In 1900 he was living with Louis in Pottawatomie, Kansas.
Kate Ambrose who married
Wilkinson #2 was born Aug. 11, 1835 in Virginia. She was the
daughter of John Bell Ambrose (b. ca. 1804) and Julia Ann Green.
John Bell Ambrose born 1804 was the son of John Bell Ambrose (b. 1781 in
Berkeley, VA) and Elizabeth Betsy Crum. His father was William
Henry Ambrose b. 1740 Frederick, MD and Sarah Catherine whose maiden name
is unknown. Some researchers suspect her maiden name was Smallwood
or Hanby, based on middle names of children and grandchildren.
Wilkinson#1 and Eliza
Johnson had a daughter named Elizabeth, b. ca. 1845 in Jefferson, KY.
She married Hezekiah Wheeler, b. ca. 1842 in Missouri. Their
daughter, Eliza F. Wheeler, b. ca. 1864 in Missouri, married Charles E. Winegar (also spelled Wininger) b. ca. 1864 in Missouri. Charles E.
Winegar was the son of Andrew Winegar and grandson of Peter Winegar who
married Julia Ann Slusher. Phebe Winegar, b. 1817, daughter of Peter
Winegar and Julia Ann Slusher, married an unidentified Hezekiah Smallwood,
b. ca. 1826 in Tennessee. Peter Winegar was born 1782 in Hawkins, TN
and his wife Julia Ann Slusher was born 1780 in
Scott, Virginia.
Other Smallwoods were in Scott,
Virginia, including an Elisha
(b. 1800-1810) and an Elijah (b. 1790-1800) -
see below. It is believed these
Smallwoods were connected to an older unknown Elisha Smallwood who was
listed on the Revolutionary War Pensioner's list in 1835, Sullivan, TN.
Since Scott, Virginia
is very close to Smyth, Virginia, where
Elijah Jr.
lived, it is possible that the
Scott, VA Smallwoods were
connected to him.
In 1860, William Winegar
and Andrew Winegar, sons of Peter Winegar and Julia Ann Slusher, were
living in Scotland, Missouri. Also there were
Wilkinson#1 and
Eliza. Peter S. Winegar, the son of Peter Winegar and Julia Ann
Slusher, was living in Scott,
Virginia in 1860. In 1880
Riley Smallwood, son of Hezekiah
Smallwood and Elizabeth Broughton, was also living in Scotland, Missouri.
Julia Ann Slusher's
brother, Phillip Slusher, was in Harlan, KY (very near Laurel and
Rockcastle) and died there in about 1869. Their son, John Slusher,
named one of his sons Wilkerson. Wilkinson and Wilkerson are
sometimes considered to be the same name, at times, mispelled.
This is a very complex
puzzle that takes some real focus to analyze. Possibly,
Elijah Smallwood Jr. had
descendants who married into the Winegar family who ended up in Scotland
and possibly Clark, Missouri. We know that
Hezekiah Smallwood and
Elizabeth Broughton were in Clark, Missouri in 1860 and their son Riley
was in Scotland, Missouri in 1800.
If
Hezekiah who married
Elizabeth Broughton was the son of
Elijah Jr.,
and If Wilkinson was connected to
Elijah Jr.
then it makes sense that Wilkinson would be living near
Hezekiah in
Missouri. We don't know what connection
Wilkinsonhad to
Hezekiah,
if any, but if Wilkinsonwas born in 1797 and not in 1821/1822, he could
be the brother of Hezekiah and son of
Elijah Jr.
lf he was born 1821/1822 (which is more likely) then he could be the son
of Hezekiah and Elizabeth who were married in 1822 in Knox, KY.
There were four young males in Hezekiah's
household in 1830 and we have only accounted for three of them, so the
fourth one could be Wilkinson.
Wilkinsonand Eliza had
two daughters and two sons in the 1860 census in Scotland, Missouri.
The daughters were Tabitha b. 1852 in KY and Elizabeth b. 1844 in KY.
Tabitha married Thomas Rhodes b. 1823/1828 in Tennessee. Elizabeth
married Hezekiah Wheeler b. 1842 in Missouri. In the 1870 census of
Palmyra, Marion, Missouri, these two families were listed next to each
other.
The father of Thomas Rhodes
may have been Levi Rhodes whose widow, Jane, was listed in the 1850 census
of Scotland, Missouri. One of the children in the household was
William age 17. Levi Rhodes died before 1850. He was listed in
Hawkins, TN in 1830, along with nine Winegar families and a William
Smallwood b. 1770-1780.
The father of Hezekiah
Wheeler was Ignatius L. Wheeler b. 1806 in Pendleton, KY. In
1820 and 1830 he was listed in Jefferson, KY which is where Elizabeth
Smallwood was born in Mar. 1845. This creates a further question
about the whereabouts of her father Wilkinson during the 1840's. In
April of 1845 he was listed as a witness to a marriage between Susan
Johnson and Woodward Owen in Laurel, KY. If this was the same
Wilkinson, and if he
was in Jefferson, KY in March 1845 for the birth of his daughter Elizabeth
- then in Laurel, KY in April, 1845 for the marriage of a Susan Johnson
(who just happens to have the same last name as his wife Eliza) - this
would be quite interesting because Laurel, KY and Jefferson, KY are quite
a distance from each other. It is possible that he moved his family
from Jefferson, KY to Laurel/Rockcastle, KY between March and April, 1845.
Research into the identity
of Susan Johnson who married Woodward Owen has proven unhelpful with one
exception: they had a daughter named Tabitha Owen b. 1846 in KY.
She was found on the Kentucky Marriage list marrying William Wiggins on
Jan. 12, 1865 in Pulaski, KY. The grandfather of William Wiggins was
Morris Wiggins who was listed in the 1830 census living very near
Hezekiah Smallwood
and Elizabeth Broughton, and some other allied families. Tabitha's
parents were not found in census records after 1850 so they may have died.
Efforts to identify Susan Johnson and Woodward Owen have proven fruitless
thusfar. However, since their daughter married into a family who was
close to Hezekiah
Smallwood I would venture to guess that Woodward Owen's wife (Susan
Johnson) was the sister of Eliza Johnson who married Wilkinson Smallwood
and WilkinsonSmallwood
was the missing son of Hezekiah
and Elizabeth.
To further complicate
matters, the LDS website indicates that a Sarah Ambrose was a
relative/sponsor for the birth or baptism of a Wilkinson Smallwood in 1822
Kentucky. We cannot find a Sarah Ambrose who was living in Kentucky
and was related to Kate Ambrose who married Wilkinson #2. There were
some Ambrose families in Clay and Pulaski, KY but it appears they were not
of the same branch. However, in the 1820 Clay, KY census, we find a
John Crum Jr. (age 45+) living 4 households away from a John Ambrose (age
26-45) who was living next to a John Bell (age 26-45). It is not
known if this John Ambrose was connected to the family of Sarah Catherine
who married William Henry Ambrose (son of Mathias Ambrose from Germany) or
to the other Ambrose family who descended from Joseph Ambrose from England
and whose descendants were in Nelson, Pulaski and Clay, KY. John
Bell Ambrose Sr. was in Berkeley, VA in 1810 and died in Warren, VA in
1860/1870. John Bell Ambrose Jr. was in Urbana, Champaign, Ohio in
1850. It is not known where he was before that. He married
Elizabeth Crum 1802 in Frederick, VA. It is possible that he went to
Clay, KY before going to Ohio, however the John Ambrose in Clay, KY was
born 1793 to 1803 and John Bell Ambrose Jr. was born 1804. This is
only a one-year age difference, so it could be him.
This Sarah Ambrose is yet
another mystery to be added to the long line of mysteries surrounding
these families.

BENJAMIN
M. SMALLWOOD (b. ca. 1801)
A marriage record for
Benjamin Smallwood and Sally Hutson (Hudson) was located in Knox, KY dated
Jan. 12, 1832. Research on Sally (aka Sarah) Hudson reveals that her
probable father was Sterling Hudson who had a daughter named Sally born
ca. 1810 in NC. In the 1850 census, we find Benjamin and Sarah
living in Jefferson, KY (same location as the birth place of Wilkinson
Smallwood's daughter). Sterling Hudson was in Salisbury, Surry, NC
at the same time as
Elijah
and the other Surry, NC Smallwoods. Several Hudson families were
found with Kentucky Land Grants in Knox and Clay, KY. They may have
been related. Also, Elizabeth Hopper, the granddaughter of Blaggrove
Hopper, married Samuel Hudson July 30, 1831 in Knox, KY. Samuel may
have been related to Sally/Sarah.

It is not proven that
Benjamin Smallwood was the son of
Elijah Jr.
however, since he was married in
Knox, KY and since
Elijah Jr.
had a male Benjamin's age in his 1810 and
1820 households, it is possible that Benjamin was the son of
Elijah Jr.
Census records indicate that
Benjamin was born in South Carolina and I can find not records of a
Smallwood family in South Carolina in about 1800 - he may have been born
in North Carolina, or he may be a descendant of an unknown Smallwood
family who was in South Carolina.
SUSANNAH SMALLWOOD (b. ca. 1815)
A marriage record for
Susannah Smallwood and Elijah Warren was found in Smyth, VA dated March
18, 1841. In the 1840 census Elijah Warren was listed in Smyth, VA
along with
Elijah Jr.
and John M. Smallwood.
Elijah
Warren and Susannah were found in the 1850 census living in Smyth, VA.
There were several children in their household born before 1841, so it is
possible that Susannah was not the first wife of Elijah Warren.
Since it is believed that
Elijah Jr.
was in Smyth, VA in 1840, it is
likely that Susannah was his daughter.

THE OTHER "FLOATING" SMALLWOODS
ELIJAH AND ELISHA SMALLWOOD -
SCOTT,
VA
In 1830 in
Scott,
Virginia we find an Elijah Smallwood age 30-40 and an
Elisha Smallwood age 40-50. An
Elisha Smallwood is also listed as a Revolutionary War Pensioner in
Sullivan, TN in 1835 and the Elisha listed in 1840
Scott, VA could have
been in Sullivan, TN in 1830. I am unaware of an Elisha Smallwood who was
born early enough to have served in the Revolutionary War who was still
alive in 1835. The pension recipient may have been a widow and not
the solider himself. We don't know the death date of Elijah Senior's
wife Sarah. The pension record is listed under the name Elisha, but
this may be an error - or
Elijah Sr.
may have had a son named Elisha born early enough to serve in the
Revolutionary War. The pension record does not provide the age of the
claimant.
Scott,
VA is very close to Smyth, VA where
Elijah Jr. was living in
1840 and 1850, so this strengthens the possibility that there may be a connection between the Rev. War Elisha
and
Elijah Jr.
