NARRATIVE

These lists depict a snapshot of the proximity of these various families.  In 1733, note that the Smallwoods, Hansons, Wheelers, Maconchies, Clements and Tarvins were almost exclusively located in Port Tobacco.  William Smallwood and Mary Hanson owned property in the Upper West Side of Port Tobacco, along with Samuel Hanson Sr, Samuel Hanson Jr., Richard Tarvin, and three Clements families. Col. Robert Hanson was listed in the first section of the Lower West Side.

UPDATE (1/16/06)

I now believe that Mary Hanson's parents were Samuel Hanson and Elizabeth Story.  I finally got access to a copy of the book "Charles County Gentry" and the author of that book explains the confusion between the two Mary Hansons.  Another researcher believes that Mary, the daughter of Robert, married John Briscoe, but this author disputes that and believes she married Daniel Jenifer (he states that she may have married Briscoe prior to marrying Jenifer).  As for  Mary, the daughter of Samuel, he does not mention who she married, stating only that one of Samuel's daughters married David Stone, and he does not know if it was Mary or Sarah.  Other researchers believe it was Sarah.  This leaves Mary Hanson (b. Feb. 4, 1709), daughter of Samuel Hanson and Elizabeth Story, with no known husband.  Since William Smallwood was born at about the same time, I believe he married this Mary.

Further evidence:  Samuel Hanson Sr. was living in the West Upper Side of Port Tobacco in 1733, very near the Smallwood families, while Robert Hanson was living in the Lower Side.  In 1747-48, the Smallwoods were mostly in District #4, ano so was Mary's probably brother, Col. Samuel Hanson Jr.  In 1758 Samuel Jr. was still living very near the Smallwood families.  William Smallwood and Mary Hanson were no longer listed because they had moved to Granville, North Carolina.

This book also gives Mary's birth date as February 4, 1709 in Charles, MD.

There were Story families in Granville, North Carolina as early as 1756.  A James Story was born there in that year.  I am still researching to learn who his parents were.

Leonard Wheeler and Elizabeth Hanson owned property on the East Side of Port Tobacco along with John Hanson Jr, John Hanson Sr, William Smallwood, Ledstone Smallwood, Samuel Hanson Sr., Jacob Clements and two Smoot families.  It is presumed that the William Smallwood who owned property near Ledstone was his son William, and not the William who married Mary Hanson.

Note that tax list number 42 is John Smallwood and next to him is William Smallwood.  It is presumed these are the sons of James Smallwood II and Mary Boyden.  James II died in 1723, and his widow "Widow Smallwood" is listed on the other side of John.  Next to Widow Smallwood is James, presumed to be her third son and next to him is Matthew, presumed to be her second son.

Next to these Smallwoods is Samuel Hanson Sr.  This is presumed to be the Samuel who married Elizabeth Story.

On the 1758 Charles, MD Tax List, the following Smallwoods are listed:

Pomonkey Hundred:  Thomas, Pryor

Port Tobacco West Side: Thomas, James Jr., William Marbury, John Sr., John, James Sr., George, Matthew and James.

William Smallwood and Mary Hanson are not listed, supporting the opinion that they moved to Granville, North Carolina in about 1755.  William and Mary's son John died 1765 in Prince Georges, MD, and he is also not listed.  This is because he moved to Prince Georges County by 1755 when his daughter (Ann Middleton Smallwood) was born there.

The following Hansons were listed on the 1758 tax list:

Durham Parish:  Samuel Jr.

Port Tobacco West Side: Samuel Esq., Mary, William

The Wheelers are no longer listed in Charles County in 1758.  They had already moved to Prince Georges County, MD.  Samuel, the son of Leonard Wheeler and Elizabeth Hanson, may have gone to Granville, NC by 1758.  He was there in 1769 on that tax list.

ELIZABETH SMALLWOOD MARRIED UNKNOWN TARVIN

Elizabeth Smallwood (b. ca. 1736) was the daughter of William Smallwood and Mary Hanson.  She was mentioned in her father's will with the last name of TARVIN.  Since Richard Tarvin was listed near William Smallwood in the 1733 Charles, MD Tax List, it is presumed that Elizabeth married one of his sons.

There is quite a bit of research on Richard Tarvin available on the internet.  Richard Tarvin was born 1691 in Liverpool, England.  He married Elizabeth Dent in Charles, MD.  Information about Richard Tarvin's children is sparse.  His widow Elizabeth and son George are listed on the Charles, MD Rent Roll but the date range is 1642-1753.  George Tarvin is also listed in Charles, MD documents on Jan. 21, 1748.

Richard Tarvin and Elizabeth Dent had the following children:

George Tarvin Sr (ca. 1719-1803) married Eleanor Mudd, died in Charles, MD
William Tarvin Sr. (ca. 1720-1785) married Nancy?, died in Columbia, Georgia
Richard Tarvin (ca. 1722-1744) married unknown, died in Charles, MD
Martha Tarvin (1723-1796) married Joseph Noble, died in Washington, PA
John Tarvin (ca. 1724-1796) married unknown, died in Washington, PA
Elizabeth Tarvin (ca. 1726-?)
Thomas Tarvin (ca. 1730-?), married unknown, died unknown
Ann Tarvin (1732-?)
Rebecca Tarvin (ca. 1736-?)

One of Richard and Elizabeth's descendants was given the middle name SMALLWOOD.  But this did not occur until the year 1869.  He was Reddick Smallwood Tarvin, b. Sep. 1869 in Calhoun Co, Arkansas.  His father was Reddick P. Tarvin (b. 1842 Macon, AL).  His grandfather was Reddick S. Tarvin (b. ca. 1807 Columbia, GA).  It is possible that this 1807 Reddick's middle name was also Smallwood.  If so, it is conceivable that he was a descendant of Elizabeth Smallwood.

1807 Reddick Tarvin's father was probably Frederick Tarvin, mother unknown.  Frederick is believed to be the son of William Tarvin Sr. who was the son of Richard Tarvin and Elizabeth Dent.  If the Smallwood name was passed down in this branch of the Tarvin family, it could be a clue as to which Tarvin Elizabeth Smallwood married.

Elizabeth Smallwood was b. ca. 1736.  None of Richard Tarvin and Elizabeth Dent's grandsons were born before 1742, therefore, it is presumed that Elizabeth married one of their sons and not one of their grandsons.

Taking a closer look at their other sons, George married Eleanor Mudd, so that rules him out as the possible husband of Elizabeth Smallwood.  Richard died in 1744 so that rules him out also.  This leaves only William, John and Thomas as possible husbands for Elizabeth Smallwood.

Other research shows that John Tarvin died in Washington, PA in 1796.  He is not found in the census in 1790, however a John Tarvin is listed in Montgomery, PA in 1800, born between 1774 and 1784.  It is unknown just who this John Tarvin is, however, he married Rebecca Robey in Prince Georges, MD on July 8, 1808 (usgenweb.org).  An Elizabeth Smallwood also married Horatio Club in that county in 1821.  She may have been an unknown daughter of Bayne Smallwood and Marsilva Coe who were also married there Dec. 19, 1780.  I can find no information about a spouse or children for the older John.

Thomas Tarvin was born ca. 1730 in Charles, MD and I can find no information about a spouse or children for him either.  It is not known where and when he died.

It is possible that Elizabeth Smallwood married either John Tarvin or Thomas Tarvin.  It is also possible that she married William Tarvin whose wife was believed to be Nancy - but not proven.  If so, she could have been a second wife.  This would make sense since William's son Frederick had a great-grandson with the middle name Smallwood.

WILLIAM SMALLWOOD JR. MARRIED SARAH PHILPOT

William Jr. (b. ca. 1745), son of William Smallwood and Mary Hanson, married Sarah Philpot (b. 1755).  Her parents were William Philpot (b. ca. 1740) and Mary Ann Davis.  William Philpot's parents were Charles Philpot and Elizabeth Smoot.  Note that John and Charles Philpot are listed in the William & Mary Parish Upper Part along with Walter Hanson, two Fendall families and three Smoot families.

Several of the Philpot families moved to Granville, NC along with William Smallwood and Mary Hanson, and some Wheeler families.  A Thomas Philpot is listed on the 1769 Granville, NC Tax List along with Widow Mary Smallwood.  A Thomas and William Philpot are listed there in 1784 and 1786.  This William Philpot was the brother of Sarah.  His son William was born there in 1784.  They later moved to Barren Co, Kentucky.

Sarah Philpot and William Smallwood went to Rowan / Orange Co, NC by 1778.

Some Philpot families moved to Clay Co, Kentucky in later years, as did some descendants of William Smallwood and Mary Hanson.  John Thomas Philpot was in Clay, KY by 1806.  He was Sarah Philpot's first cousin.  He married Nancy Bates 1792 in Scott, Virginia.  Scott, Virginia is where an Elisha and Elijah Smallwood lived in 1840.  Elisha may have an unknown son of Elijah Smallwood Sr. of Surry, NC.

The Smallwoods were in Granville, NC, Orange / Rowan, NC, Scott, VA and Clay, KY.  This is evidence that the Philpots and the Smallwoods followed similar migratory patterns.
