SMALLWOODS IN SHELBY COUNTY, KENTUCKY If Hezekiah Smallwood (b. 1799) was the son of Elijah Smallwood Jr., then he would have been the first cousin (1 time removed) of Samuel Smallwood (b. ca. 1780) who married Sarah Akers. As early as 1810 we find several Smallwood families listed in Federal Census records in Shelby County, Kentucky. Samuel, John, and Randolph Smallwood, sons of William Smallwood and Sarah Philpot, were in Shelby, Kentucky in 1810 along with some familiar families, including Joseph Akers whose daughter, Sarah, married Samuel Smallwood. Also there was Elisha Prewitt, second cousin (1 time removed) of Joseph Pruitt who married Nancy Moore, the daughter of Lemuel Moore in Laurel, KY. 1810 Federal Census In 1820 Shelby, KY we find Samuel Smallwood and John Smallwood. Samuel is identified, however John is not. John was born between 1774 and 1794. One would think this John was the brother of Samuel, however, that John was in Lawrence, TN in 1820. Also in Shelby, KY was Job Broughton born between 1774 and 1794 - another unidentified individual. SHELBY CO KY -
1820 FEDERAL CENSUS Samuel Smallwood has not been located in the 1830 census, but his wife's parents and some of her siblings were in New Albany, Floyd, Indiana. 1830 census In 1840 Samuel may have been in La Porte, Indiana. A Samuel Smallwood was listed there who fits his profile. In 1849 his son Elijah had land grants in Illinois. 1840 CENSUS Samuel probably died before 1850 as his wife Sarah is found in New Albany, Coles, IL in 1850 living with her son Elijah and his family. 1850 census
- New Albany, Coles, IL Samuel's son Elijah died in 1856 and Elijah's daughter Sarah is found in the 1860 census in Lewis Co, Missouri living with her apparent uncle James Johnson and her grandmother Elizabeth (Coleman) Johnson. Lewis County is very close to Schuyler and Clark Counties in Missouri where Hezekiah and his family were residing in 1860. It is not known if this was a coincidence or if Elijah was in contact with Hezekiah before his death. Samuel Smallwood and Sarah Akers had a son James born ca. 1811 in Kentucky. In 1850 he was living in Harrison, Vigo, Indiana with his wife Mary and three children. He probably died before 1860 as his wife and two of his children are listed in Terre Haute, Vigo, Indiana in 1860. 1850 census Other researchers have given the birthplace of Sarah Smallwood (daughter of Elijah Smallwood and Elizabeth Johnson) as Terre Haute, Indiana. She was born August 9, 1844, therefore, her father Elijah may have moved to Terre Haute, Vigo, Indiana from La Porte, Indiana between 1840 and 1844. Northern Missouri and Illinois Counties Samuel Smallwood and Sarah Akers had a son Wesley b. August 16, 1816 in Kentucky. A Wesley Smallwood was found in Hancock, Illinois in 1860. Hancock, IL is next to Lewis and Clark, Missouri and very near Schuyler, Missouri. Schuyler county is where Hezekiah Smallwood and Elizabeth Broughton lived in 1860. Clark county is where Hezekiah's son Elisha lived in 1860. If Hezekiah was the son of Elijah Jr. he would have been Wesley's second cousin. The fact that they were living in adjacent counties may be further evidence that Hezekiah was closely related to Samuel Smallwood.
