CENSUS ANALYSIS:  COOK FAMILIES IN LAWRENCE, TN 1820-1840

By tracking the Cooks and Brashear families who were in Hickory County, Missouri in the 1850 Federal Census, it is believed that John Cook was in Lawrence County, Tennessee in 1840.  In 1850 he was living near several Brashears families who were from that county.  The 1840 census shows a John Cook living next to a Charles Cook.  John has one male under the age of 5, one female under the age of 5 and the two adults.  The young female does not show up in the 1850 census so she may have died young.  It is believed that Charles was the father of John Cook.  John named one of his sons Charles, so this makes sense.  Also there were several Brashears families whose descendants went to Missouri.

The 1830 Federal Census lists Cook and Brashears families in Lawrence Co., TN.  Nathan Brashear, Henry Brashear and Jesse Brashear all went to Benton and Hickory counties, Missouri before 1840.  We also find Thomas Cook age 60-70, Charles Cook age 30-40 and William Cook age 30-40.  It is believed that Thomas was the brother of Charles and William.  Since the same Charles who was listed in the 1840 census is referred to as "Junior" it is believed he was the son of another Charles Cook (Senior) who was there in 1820, along with Charles Cook Junior age 26-45.

A search of early Tennessee marriage records shows John Cook married Martha Huddleston August 9, 1833 in Wilson County, Tennessee.  Martha Huddleston was born 1815 in Tennesse, which matches subsequent census records.  Martha was the daughter of Anthony Huddleston and Elizabeth Lewis.

In the 1810 Federal Census in Clark County, Kentucky, we find Charles Cook age 45+ and Jacob Cook age 26-45, two lines away from Charles.  John Cook was born ca. 1812/1815 in Kentucky.  Therefore, it is believed he was one of the young males age 0-10 in the household of Charles Cook.  Other members of the household fit the profile of Charles Cook Jr. and his wife.

In the 1800 Federal Census in Louisburg, Franklin County, North Carolina we find Charles Cook age 45+, Thomas Cook age 45+, William Cook age 45+, Shamael Cook age 26-45 and John Cook age 45+.  In the household of Charles Cook there is a male age 26-45 and a female age 26-45.  It is believed they are Charles Cook Jr. and his wife.

In the 1790 Federal Census in Franklin County, North Carolina we find two Thomas Cooks, one with 11 slaves.  We also find Charles, Benjamin, 2 Johns, Jacob, and 2 William Cooks.  It is believed the Thomas Cook with 11 slaves was the father of Thomas Cook who was in Lawrence County, Tennessee in 1820.  John, Jacob, Benjamin and William are probably also his sons or grandsons.

Records have been located showing a Jacob Cook who married Elizabeth Babb in 1781 in Franklin County, North Carolina.  Their son, Green Babb Cook, was in Wilson County, Tennessee in 1820 and 1830 and died there in 1875.  Wilson County is slightly north of Lawrence County.  Also in Wilson County we find several Brashear families and Anthony Huddleston, the father of Martha Huddleston.

It is curious why John Cook would go to Wilson County to get married when his father was in Lawrence County.  However, it is apparent he had close relatives living in Wilson County and may have gone there as a young man to work on the farm of one of his relatives, where he met and married Martha.  Within six years of their marriage they were living in Lawrence County (1840).

In 1850 we find Charles Cook Jr. (b. 1785 NC) living in Polk County, Missouri with wife Amanda (b. 1818 TN).  Since he had children prior to Amanda's birth, it is believed she was his second wife.  In their household are several children: Nancy, Sarah, William and Henry.  Also living there we find Reuben Brashears who was born in Tennessee.  In the 1860 Federal Census we find Charles Cook Jr. living in Sugar Creek, Barry County, Missouri.  An additional child is in their household: Elvy J. b. ca 1852 MO.

POSSIBLE ANTECEDENTS OF JOHN COOK:

1.  John Cook, b. 1812/1815 KY, m. Martha E. Huddleston Aug. 9, 1833 Wilson Co, TN
2.  Charles Cook Jr., b. ca 1785 prob Franklin, NC
3.  Charles Cook Sr., b. before 1775
4.  Thomas Cook, b. 1740/1750, prob. Virginia
5.  Thomas Cook, b. 1703 Isle of Wight, Virginia
6.  Thomas Cook, of Isle of Wight, Virginia, m. Mary Jones Feb. 17. 1702

MARRIAGE RECORDS:

A marriage record was found for a Charles Cook and Emerilla Brashears dated June 19, 1839 in Lawrence County, Tennessee.  It is believed Emerilla was the second wife of Charles Cook Jr. and the daughter or granddaughter of Henry Alexander Brashears (Breshears) and Eleanor Harden who were listed in the 1830 census of Lawrence Co, TN.  In the 1850 census the wife of Charles is listed as Amanda and in the 1860 census she is listed as "E".  Therefore, it is believed her full name was Emerilla Amanda Brashears (or Amanda Emerilla Brashears) and she was born ca 1818 in Tennessee.  Henry Alexander Brashears died in Lawrence Co., TN January 29, 1829.  His son Jesse was listed in Benton County, Missouri (next to Hickory County) in the 1840 census.

Connections between the Brashears and Cooks have been found in early Maryland records.  Nancy Ann Cook, daughter of Maryland Naval Commander George Cook (Rev. War commander of the ship "Defence") married Dr. Belt Brashears, son of William Brashears.  Belt Brashears was on the 1799 Tax List of Prince Georges County, Maryland.  George Cook was on the 1796 Tax List of Frederick County, Maryland.  George Cook was listed in the 1790 Federal Census in Frederick County, Maryland along with Nathan and William Brashears; and Belt Brashears was listed on the 1790 Federal Census in Prince Georges County, Maryland.  It is entirely possible that George Cook was related to Thomas Cook who was in Franklin County, North Carolina in 1790.  Many Cooks and Brashears were listed on the 1778 Maryland Oath of Fidelity and Census Lists, including a Thomas Cook.

A marriage record for Thomas Cook (b. 1703 Isle of Wight, Virginia) and Amy took place in 1740.  Thomas was the son of Thomas Cook and Mary Jones.  It is believed the Thomas Cook listed in the 1790 Federal Census of Franklin Co, NC (who owned 11 slaves) was born ca. 1725/1735.  It is possible his parents were Thomas Cook and Amy and his grandparents were Thomas Cook and Mary Jones.  A Capt. Jones Cook was listed in 1812 in Franklin County, NC.  He may be a son of Thomas Cook (who owned the slaves) and a grandson of Thomas Cook and Mary Jones.

Dyara Cook married Samuel Anderson June 27, 1839 in Lawrence Co, Tennessee.  They were located in the 1850 census of Hickory Co., Missouri with three children: William, Martha and Sarah.  Also there were John Cook and Martha Huddleston Cook with their family.  It is believed that Dyara was the sister of John.

Peggy Cook married John Anderson April 9, 1828 in Lawrence Co., TN.  She may be the daughter of Charles Cook Sr. or Thomas Cook.

Vina Cook married Williamson Rogers after 1840 in Lawrence Co., TN.  Vina may be the daughter of Thomas Cook.  Williamson was located in the 1840 census living very near Thomas Cook in Lawrence Co, TN.

NEW INFORMATION RECEIVED MARCH 31, 2005

Email correspondence with a descendant of John Anderson and Margaret "Peggy" Cook has revealed possible new information.  Margaret and John were married April 9, 1828 in Lawrence Co, TN.  Documents obtained by Mary Anderson reveal the name of Margaret's father:  Charles Cook.  Since John Cook was living next to Charles Cook Jr. in 1840 Lawrence TN, it is probable that Margaret was related to them.  Charles Cook Jr. did not have a young female in his 1820 household the right age to be Margaret, but Charles Cook Sr. did.  Therefore, it is possible that Margaret was the daughter of Charles Cook Sr. and the sister of Charles Cook Jr.

John and Margaret Anderson had a son named Samuel Franklin Anderson, born March 30, 1839 in Lawrence TN.  Samuel served in the Civil War and moved from TN to AR.  He died in 1913 in Tuckerman, Jackson, AR.  He married Rebecca Hester Oct. 25, 1857 in Lawrence, TN.  They had eight known children.  Below are two photos of Samuel Franklin Anderson and some of his family members.  John Anderson was the son of Benjamin Anderson and Hester.  It is possible that Benjamin was also the father of Samuel Anderson who married Dyara Cook June 27, 1839 in Lawrence, TN.  Dyara may have been the daughter of Charles Cook Jr.
