By tracking the Fowlers in early Ohio and Indiana through census,
marriage, land and military records, it is fairly apparent that many of
them were related. The surnames included in this research are seen
over and over again as several generations of Fowlers and related
individuals married into the same families and / or migrated in similar

An analysis of the 1790 census record for Hamutal places
her possible son, Benjamin Jr., living in her household along with his
wife (Mary Naylor) and their son, James A. Fowler who would have been
about age 3. However, it is more likely that Benjamin Jr. was in
Northumberland, PA in 1790. A Ben, David and Asahel Fowler were
found in the 1790 census there along with several Devore families,
including the grandfather of Benjamin Nicholas Fowler's mother. In 1800 a Benjamin Fowler was listed on early Madison
Co., Kentucky records along with a Jeremiah and Joseph Fowler. In
the 1820 Federal Census Benjamin was found in Oxford Twp., Butler Co.,
Ohio along with a younger Jeremiah and James. Also in that county
were Joseph and Isaac Fowler, James, Allen and Isaac Mann. It is
believed that this Joseph Fowler was the son of the older Joseph who was
in Madison Co., Kentucky and probably the brother of Benjamin Jr.
POSSIBLE TIMELINE FOR BENJAMIN JR:
1765 - 1790: Living in Maryland - possibly Anne Arundel or Prince George
County
1790 - 1799: Living in Maryland, Pennsylvania or Kentucky
1800 - 1807: Living in Madison Co, Kentucky
1808 - 1820+: Living in Oxford Twp, Butler Co, Ohio - probably died there
before 1830

Zachariah Fowler married Sarah Polke. In 1783 a
Zachariah Fowler was listed in the Assessment Index of Baltimore Co.,
Maryland. A Zachariah Fowler was listed in the 1790 Federal Census
in Patapsco Lower Hundred, Baltimore Co., Maryland along with Isaac

a younger Zachariah Fowler. A Zachariah Fowler was listed in Nelson
Co., Kentucky in 1792 and 1800. In the 1810 Federal Census he was
listed in Nelson Co., Kentucky along with a younger William Fowler.
In the 1820 Federal Census Zachariah was listed in Bradstown, Nelson Co.,
Kentucky along with a younger Bernard Fowler. In the 1830 Federal
Census Zachariah was listed in Nelson Co., Kentucky along with a younger
John Fowler. Nicholas Naylor (believed to be the brother of Mary
Naylor) was living in Madison, Pike Co., Indiana in 1820 - same township
as Zachariah Fowler Jr. and Thomas Fowler, sons of Zachariah Fowler and
Sarah Polke. Nicholas was over age 45 and does not show up in
subsequent census records, so it's possible that he died before 1830.
Also there were several Selby families.

Devore, John M. Fouler, Daniel Fowler, John Fowler, Hezekiah Fowler and
Hezekiah Fowler Jr. He was not listed in subsequent census records
so he probably died before 1830.

NOTE:
Another Benjamin Fowler born 1735 in Maryland was
located in another family tree. He married Ales (Alice) and had two
sons: James (1758) and John. It is possible this Benjamin was the
one who married Hammutal Stinchcomb. His marriage to Hammutal may
have been a second marriage.
Also, there was another Benjamin Fowler born in this
time period in Maryland (son of William Fowler and Susannah Duvall).
He was born ca. Dec. 16, 1733. No further information is known about
him. He may have been the father of the Benjamin Fowler who went to
Oxford, Butler, OH instead of the one who married Hammutal Stinchcomb.
However, David Stinchcomb, believed to be a relative of Hammutal, was in
the same unit with several allied individuals in the War of 1812 serving
in Ohio. This, in itself, is not proof, but it is evidence to
support the theory that our Benjamin was descended from the Benjamin who
married Hammutal Stinchcomb, in addition to the fact that they were in
Anne Arundel, MD at the same time as the other allied families were there.
David Stinchcomb was in Miami Co, OH in 1820, 1830 and
1840. He was born 1794 in PA. He married Sarah Dye in 1811
whose parents were from Washington, PA. Their son Stephen was born
1815 in Ohio and was living in La Porte, Indiana in 1850. This means
his father David was in Ohio by 1815, close to the same time that Benjamin
Fowler went there. He was still in La Porte, Indiana in 1880 and
shows his father's birth place was PA. This places his father David
in PA possibly at the same time as Ben Fowler and Mary Naylor.
Abram Beedle was also married in Miami Co, Ohio in 1812.
Abram was the father of John R. Beedle who married Isabelle Carson, sister
of Nancy A. Carson who married Benjamin Nicholas Fowler. His father
Joseph Beedle was from Washington Co, PA.
More evidence: The parents of David Stinchcomb are not
known, but he may have been the son of George Stinchcomb and Mary Hammond
who were in Rostraver Twp, Westmoreland, PA before going to Ohio after
1810. Also in 1810 Rostraver, PA was Major John Ellis, son of Capt. James
Ellis and Mary Ann Walker. John's sister, Margaret Ellis, married
David Carson and their son Henry married Rebecca Fowler, daughter of
Benjamin Fowler and Mary Naylor. A Larkin Stinchcomb was in Westmoreland,
PA in 1800 and 1810. He was in Allegheny, PA in 1820 and 1840.
I cannot find much information on a Larkin Stinchcomb, so it is not known
who his parents were. He married Rachel Stocksdale in 1792 Baltimore
Co, MD. Here are marriages in Baltimore Co, MD for Stinchcombs from
1778-1800:
George Stinchcomb and Aberilla Andrews,
June 21, 1783, 11-BA-6
McLain Stinchcomb and Nackey Merryman, Sept 19, 1778, 11-BA-1
Larkin Stinchcomb and Rachel Stocksdale, Nov. 25, 1792, 6-BA
Thomas Stinchcomb and Ruth Owings, Apr. 23, 1778, 11-BA-1
Victor Stinchcomb and Ann Cord, Mar. 14, 1790, 6-BA
Note Victor Stinchcomb who married Ann Cord. The
reference next to their marriage record is the same as the reference next
to the marriage record of Larkin Stinchcomb. Victor was the son of
John Stinchcomb and Ann Worthington, and grandson of Capt. John Stinchcomb
and Catherine McCleane. It is not known if they had a son named
Larkin. Larkin may also have been the son of Thomas Stinchcomb and
Ruth Owings. Further discussion about their son John O. Stinchcomb
is below.
Another Sarah Dye married John Warder Mann in or near
Miami, OH. He was the son of John Mann and Abigail Devore.
Abigail was the aunt of Elizabeth Devore who married James A. Fowler, son
of Benjamin Fowler and Mary Naylor. This Sarah dye was probably the
daughter of Andrew G. Dye and Elizabeth Martin. Andrew G. Dye was
the brother of the other Sarah Dye who married David Stinchcomb.
Andrew G. Dye was born in Mason, KY. This is where some of the
Fowler/Devore and allied families went before going to Ohio. He was
born in 1795 and Sarah was born in 1794, so the chances are good that she
was also born in Mason, KY at about the same time that the Fowlers and
Devores were also there.
David Stinchcomb may also have been the son or grandson
of one of Hammutal's brothers. She had two known brothers: Nathaniel
born Sept. 21, 1739 and Thomas born May 21, 1742. Thomas had no
known sons named David but little is known about Nathaniel. I found
a Nathaniel Stinchcomb who married Airy Cannon on Oct. 6, 1791 in
Baltimore, MD.
They may be connected to the unknown David. This Nathaniel is rather
old to be the father of David, but he may be his grandfather.
Another marriage between a George Stinchcomb and Mary Cannon was located in
Baltimore, MD with a date of July 5, 1809. George could be an
unknown nephew of Hammutal. The following census record shows
that he was born ca. 1786. It is possible he was the son of
Hammutal's brother, Thomas Stinchcomb and Ruth Owings. Note the name
Cannon referenced
below in the same Maryland record with Thomas Stinchcomb. Also,
George was born about two years after the unidentified Larkin Stinchcomb
who could have been his brother. George may also have had a close
relative named Nathaniel who married Airy Canon in 1791.

Maryland
George Stinchcomb, 64, farmer, $5000, MD
Mary Stinchcomb, 60, Maryland (note: nee Canon)
William Norfolk Stinchcomb, 6, North Carolina
Louisa Stinchcomb, 6, Maryland
A record from the Maryland Chancery
Court reveals the name "Aria" Stinchcomb, which is probably the same
person as "Airy" nee Canon. Also mentioned in this document was
William Cannon, most likely a close relative of Aria. Several people
were involved in a court suit against Moses Cannon over the estate of
William Cannon, Sr. Therefore, it looks like Aria, Mary, William and
Moses Cannon were all children of William Cannon, Sr. This suit took
place in 1828 and Aria's husband is not mentioned, so he may have died
prior to this. It also links Mary and Aria nee Cannon with George
Stinchcomb. Since Nathaniel and Aria were married in 1791 and George
and Mary were married in 1809 (an 18-year difference), it is possible that
Mary and Aria Cannon were not sisters, but perhaps cousins, and the same
for George and Nathaniel Stinchcomb.

A Moses Cannon was listed in the 1830
Federal census in Bethel, Miami, Ohio. David Stinchcomb was in
Staunton, Miami, Ohio in 1830. This is possible further evidence of
a connection between David Stinchcomb and those mentioned above.

According to other researchers, William Stinchcomb, his
wife Henrietta, and Son George, moved to Westmoreland county, PA. about
1789/1790. William was the son of John Stinchcomb and Catherine
McCleane and third cousin to Hamutal Stinchcomb who married Benjamin
Fowler I.
Another possibility for David Stinchcomb's father was
George Stinchcomb. A George Stinchcomb was located in the 1800
census in Middlesex, Butler, PA. He arrived in Butler, PA in 1796
and was a native of Ireland, so he may not be connected to the Stinchcombs
of Maryland. He was indexed as Stenckecomb by
ancestry.com. He had three young males born between 1790 and 1800 in
his household. One of them could have been David, but I tend to
think David was from the Maryland Stinchcomb clan because his wife's
(Sarah Dye) birth place was probably Mason, KY where some Fowler,
Devore and other allied families were at the time of her birth.
Also, a Rachel Fowler married Tunis Bennet in Mason, KY and they lived
only a few doors away from a relative of Sarah Dye. Rachel may have
been the daughter of James Fowler or Moses Fowler, both of whom were in
Mason, KY.

HISTORY OF BUTLER CO, PA

Clinton Township -- Patrick HARVEY was the first settler here, as well as
the pioneer of Old Buffalo. He selected his land in 1793, cleared a small
portion in 1794, and brought his family to the location in 1795. George
STINCHCOMB and George PLANTS settled in 1796. Thomas WATSON,
Revolutionary soldier, settled in 1797.
George STINCHCOMB a native of Ireland, located here towards the
close of 1796, but soon after sold his improvements to Barnett STEPP.
A John O.
Stinchcomb was found in the 1820 census of Redstone, Fayette, PA.
This is a location where many of the Fowlers were located from 1790 to at
least 1820. He was born before 1775. It is not known who he
was *, but may be closely related to David, although David was already in
Ohio by 1815. If he was closely related to John he may have gone to
Ohio with some of the Dye family who were near Fayette, PA (in Washington,
PA) from 1790 to at least 1820. Several members of the Dye family
remained in PA after the others went to Kentucky and Ohio. Since John was born in
1782 and his first known child was born in 1821, he probably had some
unknown children before that. He had three known sons born after
1820 and yet the 1820 census shows four young males. Obviously, some
of them are missing. David could have been his son also.
UPDATE 1/2/2006:
After some investigative work it was learned
that John O. Stinchcomb was the grand nephew of Hammutal Stinchcomb who
married Benjamin Fowler I. This makes sense, since he was in
Fayette, PA at the same time as relatives of Benjamin. It is quite
possible that David Stinchcomb was the son of John O. Stinchcomb since he
was born in PA. Larkin Stinchcomb married Rachel Stocksdale
1792 in Baltimore, MD. Her possible brother, Edward Stocksdale,
married Sarah Gosnell whose second husband was John O. Stinchcomb.
John O. Stinchcomb was the son of Thomas Stinchcomb and Ruth Owings, so it
is probable that Larkin was also their son.

EVIDENCE OF JOHN O. STINCHCOMB'S PARENTS
Below is an extract from the Maryland
Archives wherein Thomas Stinchcomb is referenced in the same document as
Mordecai Gosnell. Mordecai was the first cousin of Sarah Gosnell who
married John O. Stinchcomb. This places John in close proximity to
Thomas in at least one instance.
