Ronda - I think we have different James Moores - Darn! If William was born in Laurel Co in 1850 then my James is not his father because he was living with Lemuel Moore.

I'm pretty sure your William was the son of Abijah (his full name may have been James Abijah or Abijah James) - he had a son named James W. in 1850 Laurel Co. The "W" is probably for William. Abijah is a great mystery. the only place he shows up is 1850 and 1860 Laurel KY. After that he disappears. However, his 3 daughters appear in Morgan Co Indiana between 1865 and 1868 where all three of them married into the Collins family. Apparently, Abijah died before 1870. Abijah's wife Eveline shows up in 1880 in Clay, Morgan, IN, living with James Smallwood age 30 born in KY. In 1900 James Smallwood is living in Clay, Morgan, IN, age 50, born KY, living alone. It's pretty obvious this James and William are the same person.

I'm actively researching Abijah because my Hezekiah and Abijah were the only Smallwoods in Laurel Co KY in 1850. I'm hoping they were related. I'll keep you posted on what I find and I'll remove your James from my web site until we learn more about him.

I found something interesting in the Indiana Marriage Records. Three female Smallwoods were married to men named Collins in Morgan Co between 1865 and 1868. These females have the same first names as the daughters of Abijah Smallwood. In 1870 Candacy, Sarah and Mary were in Clay, Morgan, IN. In 1860 I could find no Smallwoods in Morgan Co IN, but there was a William Smallwood and Elizabeth Smallwood in Marion Co IN which is close to Morgan Co.

I had question on it...brother to Hezekiah? Father James?

I have an Elizabeth Hannah Christman in my database who married Willoughby Broughton - do you know anything about John Christman?

Since Abijah is living near Hezekiah (b. abt 1827) in 1850 maybe he's a brother to our mystery Hezekiah. Can't find anything on Abijah before or after 1850 - yet.

My husband's ggrandfather was Samuel P. Smallwood, I have his death certificate which states his mother's name was Maria Muncey, born in Russell Co VA. Last night I looked up Russell Co VA census of 1850 at rootsweb.com and found a family which I believe is William G. Smallwood and Samuel P Smallwood's.

I don't believe it is a coincidence that 7 of these names match the people living in Johnson Co, KS in 1880. I believe I have finally found the names and approximate ages of all Samuel P.'s siblings and parents.
