from MA:
Sandy, I have seen all of these during the "hunt." I was really checking Elijahs at one time as Janet Taylor's Tabitha and Elizabeth Smallwood had Elijah as father on their death certificates and then the son James had Wilkey and that W. on 1860 Scotland County, MO Census sent me chasing all of the Wilkinsons. I really can't tell you anything about these marriages, but Tabitha/Tabytha said she was born in Madison County in 1842. Parent Eliza Johnson Smallwood said on Mexican War pension form that she married Wilkinson Smallwood in Laurel or Rockcastle in 1840. Her sister, Elizabeth, was born in Louisville, Jefferson County, KY in 1845 and then brother James was born a lot later, 1854, Kentucky. Another son, Thomas was born 1857 in Missouri. So, only Tabitha's birth was a Madison county happening, but think there was some county line changes??? How are you doing on the Moores?

Mary Salisbury is looking for the parents of John Holder b about 1800 from Pittsylvania County, VA. He married, Elizabeth Smallwood 28 Nov 1820 Surry County, NC, b abt 1801 dau of John Smallwood. They had 11 children as they migrated from Surry County, NC to middle TN. The 5th child, Rebecca "Becky" Holder, b Feb 1832 Maury County, TN, is my 2GGmother. The Holders seemed to be connected with the Pigg Family as they migrated with them, & intermarried with them. Becky married John Clebourne Pigg, son of Clayborn Pigg, whose last wife was Ann Holder. Any clues or help I may receive will be most appreciated. Please respond to

On 1847 Land Records, Hezekiah bought 200 acres in Rockcastle...on the waters of Rockcastle River, including part of the old Salt Works Road on Ganley branch, and bounded as follows--then the land description goes into the trees and degrees follow! Jesse Fish and then the names following: Edmund Bale and Hezekiah Smallwood, sworn chairmen and housekeeping of said county and ELISHA Smallwood marked. Governor John J. Crittenden and Secretary of State Orland Brown signed off....
FOLLOW UP EMAIL FROM MA:
Sandy, There is a Gauley branch instead of Ganley branch where 1847 Hezekiah land records said he had the 200 acres on the Rockcastle River. ma
Email to MA 1/16/2005:
MA - I can find no references to Ganley Branch, but I found this interesting information about the old roads in Laurel, Knox, Rockcastle and Whitley Counties. There was a Salt Road that went from Manchester (Clay Co), across the Rockcastle River at the mouth of Big Raccoon, across Richmond Road north of Hazel Patch and meets the Wilderness Road. On the map I have, the Wilderness Road goes south near Livingston (Rockastle), crosses the Rockcastle River, into Hazel Patch in Laurel Co. I think the Salt Road went east to west from Manchester, Clay through Mershons Crossing toward Hazel Patch. This Salt Road was in Clay and Laurel Co and not in Rockcastle - so there must have been another Salt Road further north unless this one continued on from Hazel Patch, north into Rockcastle Co. No Salt Works Road exists now. Anyway, since Hezekiah's place was on the waters of Rockcastle River, it looks like he was on the border between Rockcastle and Laurel counties. Hazel Patch is only a few miles south of the Rockcastle River in Laurel Co.
I'll write more in a new email about the reference to Elisha Smallwood.

From Russell Dyche's "Laurel County Kentucky." This material iscopyrighted. See previous note about copyright.
""The Kentucky Mountains", a Filson Club publication, has been quotedpreviously. This portion of our story on The Wilderness Road is basedalmost entirely on records related in this most interesting and factualwork by Miss Mary Verhoeff, now First Vice-President of this Club which hascontributed so much to our knowledge of the history of Kentucky."Salt was an essential commodity that was not too plentiful in Kentucky atthe time, and a most promising source of salt was on the waters of GooseCreek in what is now Clay county. So an Act of Dec. 21, 1802, Miss Verhoefftells us, established a road from Richmond in Madison county to the saltworks on Goose creek owned by John Patrick and others and known asLangford's Lick. This was to the vicinity of present Manchester, turningoff from the main Richmond road near (south of) the Rockcastle river. TheAct also provided for a Salt Road from Pulaski Court House to the samesaltworks and also to Outlaw's salt works on Collins Fork, a few milesnortheast of the present day corner of Clay, Knox and Laurel county; which,of course, would cross Laurel county.
Turnpikes For Clay County"An Act of Jan. 31, 1810, established turnpikes (toll gates) for twoyears, and "no longer," because the roads were very bad, with but fewinhabitants living near them. Both were built by Clay county and theirlives were extended at least seven years by subsequent Legislatures. Themore important was on the road from Madison and Lincoln counties to thelower lick, or Langfords'. (From Lincoln county probably "the Windingbladeroad" to join the road from Madison at or beyond Mershons' Cross Roads.)The less important was on the road from "Hale's old place on WildernessRoad in Knox county" to the upper salt works (probably Outlaw's). FromHale's the road led to Ephrim Moore's on Lynn Camp creek, and on to Mouthof Laurel river. Feb. 16, 1808, a road was ordered from the Knox CountyCourt House to intersect with road from Langford's to the Pulaski CountyHouse at or near Benjamin Thurman's. Jan. 12, 1842, a road was ordered fromMouth of Rockcastle river passing through London, to Daniel Bates' saltfurnace on Collins Fork of Goose Creek, below the old Outlaw (Later theoriginal White) salt works.
The Sublimity Road"In an Act of 1858, establishing "the London, Somerset and Waitsborough(Head of navigation on the Cumberland river--Burnside) Turnpike RoadCompany," is this statement: "And as there are funds in the hand of JarvisJackson, of Laurel county, as a Commissioner, directed by act of GeneralAssembly to be applied to the opening of a road from London, in Laurelcounty, to the Cumberland river; and as the route contemplated...is thesame....a considerable portion of distance toward Cumberland river...theCounty Court of Laurel county shall have power, if it so desires, to orderan appropriation of such portion of said fund" prorata to this new venture. This possibly was the same "good" road, from London and Somerset, that Dr.Christopher C. Graham has been credited with building to Sublimity Springs, which was incorporated as a town, Feb. 12, 1860.""By the close of the period," said Miss Verhoeff, "there were three mainState roads, from the vicinity of Manchester, intersecting the WildernessRoad, which had been maintained by tollgates upon them or by tollscollected on the main road. One led via Burning Springs, Clay county, crossing the Madison road near (the) Hazel Patch. (Via Mershons Cross Roadand Windingblade road to north of new Hazelpatch on the Wilderness Road.)Another passed up Otter creek of Goose creek and down Stinking creek toCumberland river. The third led to Somerset via London, with a branchpassing through Raccoon Springs on (waters of Robinson creek, a tributaryto) Laurel river.
Road To Mouth Of Laurel""Besides roads leading to the salt works there were a number of othertributaries, local routes, which were given occasional aid. The mostimportant of these extended to coal mines near the mouth of Laurel river, the head of descending navigation for coal barges on the Cumberland. (Coalbarges were loaded up Rockcastle river to Sublimity Springs, just below theNarrows.) The opening of a road from London in Laurel county to the mouthof 'Big Laurel River' was ordered by Act of Feb. 2, 1833. By Act of Jan.30, 1847, the money and land warrants for the road were transferred to theroad via London to Bates' salt furnace...An Act of Feb. 25, 1835,appropriated ten thousand acres of land to Pulaski county for the openingof a road from Somerset to 'coal mines on or near Cumberland river'."
Natural As Shipping Depot"In this connection, Miss Verhoeff quoted from a report by Captain HowardStansbury, United States Engineer, in 1834: "The point (mouth of Laurel)...from the geographical position would naturally become a depot forshipment...Lying in the direct route from the upper and lower country itmust before long become the point of deposit for all articles of trade thatdepend upon the river for their transportation. The country, especiallybetween this point and Barbourville, is particularly adapted to thefavorable location of roads, being high and dry at a short distance backfrom the river, remarkably free from anything that would render theirconstruction expensive. I was informed by many of the inhabitants thatcould a certain navigation be secured to this point on the river they wouldbe willing and glad to construct the necessary roads for the transportationof their produce at their own expense.""
Knoxville Branch Most Important To London"Probably the "feeder" to The Wilderness Road most important to Laurelcounty during these earlier years, certainly most important to London, wasthe branch to Knoxville. An Act of Dec. 9, 1820, extablished a road from"Jackson's" in Knox county, through Williamsburg in Whitley county, to theTennessee line, and provided for the erection of a tollgate on it. On Feb.2, 1833, there was an Act providing help for building a bridge across LynnCamp creek on this road."Having this road was a principal argument of the Jacksons in their effortto have London made the county seat when Laurel county was organized in1926. When the town was laid out, Whitley street extended from Main streetat the south side of the public square, down the hill across Whitley branchto where the Whitley road turned to the left, or south. It was incomparatively recent years that its name has been changed to Fourth street.
Raccoon Springs and Mouth Laurel River Important Highway Centers"It will be seen from the above that Raccoon Springs and the Mouth ofLaurel were points in Laurel County from which state turnpike roadsradiated, and after its establishment, London. Most important up to 1797,"The Hazel patch" became just a point on the map till its disappearance, and several miles down the creek its name was appropriated as Hazlepatch onThe Wilderness Road, and later by the railroad as Hazelpatch."On H. S. Tanners map of 1823, Raccoon Springs and Hazelpatch where theRichomnd road crossed that creek about a half mile below "The Hazel Patch,"were the only places in Laurel county shown. An unnamed map of 1834 showstwo roads from south joining at Raccoon Springs; London with the RaccoonSprings, Whitley and Manchester roads, and the Somerset road leaving theWilderness Road a little north of it; and Hazel Patch as noted above. TheSalt Road from Manchester crosses Rockcastle river at the mouth of BigRaccoon, crosses the Richmond road north of Hazel Patch (doubtless MershonsCross Roads), and enters the Wilderness Road about half way betweenHazlepatch creek and the Rockcastle ford. Little Raccoon is labeled "SouthFork of Rockcastle".
Distances Given""Kentucky Roads and Distances", 1850, gives Cumberland Gap to CumberlandFord 15 miles, to Barbourville 16, to Raccoon Springs 18, to London 16, toRichmond 43. Hazel Patch is not shown. J. H. Cotton's Map of 1856 showsRaccoon Springs as junction of roads from Williamsburg, Barbourville andLondon."Middleton Strobridge's Map of 1862 shows "turnpike road" from Richmond toKingston, Walnut Valley, Hazelpatch (at old location), London, RaccoonSprings, Lynn Camp, Barbourville, Flat Lick, Cumberland Ford, CumberlandGap. From Raccoon Springs road lead to White Lily, Woodbine, etc., and onto Flat Lick. From London a road leads south of east to Diana, where itconnects with the "Moore Road" from Northern Laurel county, by BushesStore, Diana, and down Big Richland to Barbourville."Johnson's Map of between 1860 and 1867 shows Walnut Valley just south ofKingston, Hazelpatch about old location, Camp Wildcat slightly north ofpresent Pittsburg, London, Raccoon Springs slightly east of road,Barbourville and Cumberland Ford on road to Cumberland Gap. (Old folks havetold me a supply depot was kept at Raccoon Springs during Civil War andthere are still evidence of different road in that vicinity.)
On Salt Works Road"Taintor Bros. & Merrill Map of 1874 shows on the Wilderness Road:Cumberland Gap, Cumberland Ford, Flat Lick, Barbourville, Lynn Camp,Raccoon Springs, London, Mt. Vernon, Crab Orchard. On the Madison road,Hazelpatch at old location, Big Hill, Walnut Valley, and "Old Town"(Millville) southwest of Richmond. From Raccoon Springs is a road toSomerset, one to connect with the London-Diana-Manchester road and anotherto the south of it. Shown are the Salt Works road from Manchester to theWilderness Road, and a road south from it at about Raccoon Creek throughBush Store and Diana to Barbourville. White Lily is shown on theWilliamsburg road. On Cram's Map of 1879 are shown Raccoon Springs, LaurelBridge, London, The Glades, Diana at corner Clay, Knox and Laurel counties,Sublimity, Houses Store, Racoon Bend, Greenmount, Hazle patch near oldlocation.
Shows Railroad To London"Frank A. Gray Railroad map of 1876, shows Hazlepatch at its presentlocation, and Livingston with "Fish Point" as the post office. Asher &Adams Map of between 1870 and 1878, prematurely shows railroad to London,Fish Point on the river, and Livingston about half way between there andPine Hill."

Email from MA:
Lillian Broughton Creech reported that Hezekiah and Betsy moved back to Clay County after marrying in Knox County, KY in 1822. Sons listed in Broughton book: James H. and Hezekiah--other two? Don't know her source??? Just emailed with Kathy Hanlon in Texas on her Broughtons and she said to look at your site for her research...
The fact that there were no Smallwoods listed in 1820 Knox, KY (where Hez and Eliz were married) but there were Broughtons (Elizabeth's father included) and there were Ragans, along with Blaggrove Hopper, indicates to me that our Hezekiah may have been raised by Owen Ragan. If Hez was the son of Jonathan Smallwood he would have been about age 12-13 when he died. He may have kept his last name of Smallwood instead of being adopted by Ragan.

They may have been the parents of Hezekiah and maybe he was raised by a relative. Stephen Ring married a Rachael Smallwood (b. Sep 1775 NC) in NC but no info on her parents. She may have been an unknown daughter of Smallwood/Philpot (they were in Rowan NC in 1800) or she may have been Jonathan's sister and raised by Smallwood/Philpot because Jonathan's father Elijah died in 1810. Elijah, shows two females age 16-26 in his family in 1800 Surry NC. Rachael's husband Stephen Ring died in Aug 1816/1817 and she was in Lebanon, Russell, VA in 1820 living next to Thomas Ring (age 18-26). He was her son. She died in 1850 in Russell, VA and never remarried. I found an Ann Ring living in Shelby KY in 1830. She was age 40-50. That's where Smallwood/Philpot's son Elijah was in 1830 and Smallwood/Philpot were in 1820. There was a Lucius Ring living in Rockcastle Co Ky in 1850 - no idea who he is.

Think that I have told you that Polly (nickname for Mary) Smallwood married John Lawson in 1820 and Edy (nickname for Edith/Elizabeth?) married John Edwards in 1820, both in Knox where 1799 Hezekiah married Betsy Broughton in 1822 and they all three used Blaggrove Hopper as their preacher! Now I really think that is family! The Lawson and Edwards families lived near the Broughtons on the census records. The Hopper families are also neighbors and married into the Smallwoods.
---------------------------------------
The parents of Hezekiah Smallwood have not been verified. According to census records, our Hezekiah was born about July 1799. Hez Sr and Frankie Owen were married in Dec 1799. Hezekiah, the son of Pryor, born at about the same time has been ruled out (b. abt 1796) because his children's names are entirely different. After checking the other known Hezekiah Smallwoods, all others have been ruled out for various reasons.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ANALYSIS OF SMALLWOODS IN HARDIN CO KY:
1. THE FAMILY OF HEZEKIAH SMALLWOOD AND LOIS SMITH (FRANKIE OWEN DIED IN 1811):
1820 Federal Census - Little York, Hardin Co., KY:
Hezaciah Smallwood Sen (The fact that he is referred to as "Senior" indicates that there is a Junior some where)
Males:
3 males under 10, (James S. and ??)
1 male 10-16, (Henderson)
1 male 26-45, (Hez Sr)
Females:
2=0-10, (Mariah and Melvina)
2=10-16, (Lydia and Sarah)
2=16-26, (Elizabeth and Mary)
1=26-45 (Lois)
Hezekiah may have had more children than most people know about. Two of the males under age 10 are unknown. they were in Hardin Ky by 1820. They were not there on the 1810 census, nor the 1800 census.
Frankie Owen died in about 1811.
Also in Little York, Hardin, KY in 1820:
ELENOR SMALLWOOD KY Hardin County Little York 1820 (Pryor's Widow)
HEZE SMALLWOOD KY Hardin County Little York 1820 (Hez & Electa Ford)
HEZEKIAH SR. SMALLWOOD KY Hardin County Little York 1820 (Hez & Lois Smith)
SAMUEL SMALLWOOD KY Hardin County Little York 1820 (Benjamin's son - Hez Sr's brother)
SAMUEL JR. SMALLWOOD KY Hardin County Little York 1820 (Unknown)
2. THE FAMILY OF HEZEKIAH SMALLWOOD (SON OF PRYOR) AND ELECTA FORD
KY 1820 Federal Census Index
Name: HEZE SMALLWOOD
State: KY
County: Hardin County
Township: Little York
Year: 1820
Page: 020
MALES: 1(0-10), 0, 2(16-26) (Younger male was Simeon)
FEMALES: 1(0-10), 0, 1(16-26) (Younger female was Elizabeth)
3. I think it's very interesting that in 1870 Isaac N. Smallwood is living in the same county as Henderson Smallwood (Doniphan, KS) - and in 1880 Riley Smallwood is living in the same county as Isaac (Scotland, MO). I suppose it's just a coincidence, but still VERY interesting. Why would Riley move to Scotland County when the rest of his family was in Clark County, Vernon County or elsewhere? It could be a possible link between Hezekiah and Henderson
It makes sense that Hez Sr and Heze, the son of Pryor, would be living in the same town. Hez Sr was Pryor's younger brother. Pryor died in 1810, 10 years prior to this census. "HEZE" was Hez Sr's nephew - not his son.

On 1847 Land Records, Hezekiah bought 200 acres in Rockcastle...on the waters of Rockcastle River, including part of the old Salt Works Road on Ganley branch, and bounded as follows--then the land description goes into the trees and degrees follow! Jesse Fish and then the names following:
Edmund Bale and Hezekiah Smallwood, sworn chairmen and housekeeping of said county and ELISHA Smallwood marked. Governor John J. Crittenden and Secretary of State Orland Brown signed off....
These distances are most interesting! Thanks for doing all of this! Aloha, Mary Ann

Aloha Sandra,
I sent you a copy of my email to Juanita regarding my thoughts on the Smallwoods on your web site, but haven't seen a reply from you so--
There are a lot of Hezekiahs out there and I am out of some:
My dad, Chester Fulton Smallwood 1907-1965
out of Hezekiah Smallwood 1873-1940
out of Hezekiah Smallwood 1828-1917
out of Hezekiah Smallwood 1799-1869
I know that you have been trying to figure the families out, but I don't think that my guys were in Hardin County, KY and that there were lots of cousins all named Hezekiah at the same approximate time. I feel that our line goes back to the Col. James Smallwood in 1600's Maryland, but I can't get that 200+ years filled in with accurate information. However, Col. James had the unusual name of Hezekiah in his family, so...

As for Census Records, there are some differences beween Hezekiah and Elizabeth's 1850 Rockcastle and 1860 Schuyler family records as far as names and ages, sure makes it hard to figure them all out. I show Louisa (whoever she is) age 9 born in KY. I also have birth records from Rockcastle for an Eliza born in 1852 to H & E! This daughter, Jane with husband Francisco Stump and daughter Hettie is living with brother James in 1870 after their father Hezekiah died at James' house in 1869. Stump is also on the Will of Hezekiah as a witness and a debtor.
Email from Mary Ann (4/1/2004):
Jane is the last daughter of Hezekiah and Elizabeth Broughton Smallwood, born in 1852 KY. Think she is Eliza Jane. She is the sister of James. Yes, the Will is available in Clark County, MO and the Will is where it said that Hezekiah was living in the home of James for a few months before his death. Also, I have had a question about the Will as it says he left it all to daughter Elizabeth. Well, he did have a daughter Elizabeth born in 1840, but I wonder why he would just leave stuff to her and not the other kids. I have always wondered if that meant wife Elizabeth, but I can't find her after 1860 Census. Don't know where she died or when! Questions! MA

Mary Ann - I found some more coincidences. Julia Ann Slusher married Peter Wininger - they were the parents of Phebe Wininger who married Hesekiah Smallwood (b abt 1826 TN) in Scott Co VA. William Broughton (son of John Broughton and Sarah Payne) married Elizabeth Slusher. Elizabeth's father, John, was the nephew of Julia Ann Slusher. Eli Henry Broughton married Eleanor Slusher. She was Elizabeth Slusher's sister.
Phebe's father was from Hawkins Co TN and his wife Julia Ann Slusher was from Scott Co VA. Scott Co VA and Hawkins Co TN are very close to each other. The Slusher families can be found in Montgomery Co, VA > Harlan Co KY > Bell Co, KY > Hawkins Co, TN > Scott Co. VA.
Wm Broughton (and his Slusher wife) were in Stinking Creek, Knox Co KY in 1860. Eli and his wife were living with her father John Slusher in Harlan Co KY. Wm and Eli Broughton were first cousins to Wm Broughton who married Winniford Moore (Laurel Co KY). No idea if this is significant or not.
By the way, I can't find Hezekiah and Eliz. Broughton in 1840 census records. Have you found them in 1840?
Thanks, Sandy

Males: 1(10-16) 2(16-26) 1(45+)
Females: 1(10-16) 3(16-26) 1(45+)
Do you know which one is Hezekiah and Catherine? Any idea who the other one is?

Thank you so much for taking the time to send that Richard Smallwood information to me. It does show that Richard died in 1827, however Hezekiah was married in Knox Co KY in 1822 and I believe two of his sisters were married in Knox in 1820. The chances are he was not related to Richard but I'm happy to have the research info anyway. I'm trying to gather as much as I can about all Smallwoods in that region.
Thanks again, Sandra
Email to MA 1/14/2005:
Ma - I was googling for Joseph Broughton and I stumbled across a Broughton family home page with this.....
John Henry Broughton, was born December 28, 1773 in St Mark's Parish, South Carolina to Edward and Elizabeth Ragan Broughton. (William Ragan's Will, dated January 15, 1785 leaves part of his estate to "John Broughton, the son of my daughter, Elizabeth Broughton. On March 3, 1800, John sold the land, consisting of 208 acres to James Harkness for $500. The deed was originally recorded Sept. 16, 1800.)
John Henry Broughton went to Georgia around 1802. Their son Nathaniel Broughton went to Alabama 1814-1817. Their son Edward Jr. stayed in South Carolina - he was in Sumter Dist., South Carolina 1816.
Willoughby's sons Jesse and John lived in Georgia. Some of Smallwood/Philpot's sons went to Georgia also.
---------------------------------------
<http://www.kcnet.com/~denis/gates/woodard/broug-02.htm>Willoughby lived in Virginia at least into the 1770's. In 1750 he was living in Richmond County and by late 1755 he and his family were living in Brunswick County. There is some indication that he may have served during the French and Indian War At the Battle of Moore's Bridge, in Surry County, North Carolina, during the Revolutionary War, Willoughby and his two sons, Job and Jesse fought against the Tories. During the 1770's, Willoughby lived in Surry County, moving to Wilkes County, Georgia around 1778. By 1790 Willoughby was living in Marlboro County, South Carolina. Willoughby's second wife wife was widow Joanna Johnston and it was sometime during this decade, the 1790's, that Willoughby moved to Anderson County, South Carolina.

This part of the Broughton family is not in my database - I don't even know if they are related to our Broughtons, but when I saw that one of them married into the Ragan family I was momentary shocked.
Maybe the Smallwoods / Ragans / Broughtons were connected very early - back to Willoughby. If these families are connected - who knows? Maybe some of them went to Clay and Shelby, KY with Smallwood/Philpot. Ragan and Broughton are not common names and to find them connected in two different situations while researching the same group of people is rather curious.
One problem....that Joseph or Joe Broughton in Clay KY did not show up on that Broughton family web site. I'm still researching him and his probable son Wm.
Now I'll probably go off on a tangent and try to find out more about Edward Broughton and William Ragan....
your thoughts are welcome....

MA - Below are the results of my search into the distances from the various locations of our people in Knox/Laurel/Rockcastle/Clay, KY. It looks like the two farthest points are between Big Poplar Creek, Siler, Whitley Co (where the Ragans were) and Livingston, Rockcastle Co - the distance is 62.54 miles. Distance from Stinking Creek, Knox to Big Poplar Creek, Siler, Whitley is 23 miles. This would be the distance between the Ragans and the Broughtons in 1820. All of these areas are fairly close to one another. Distance from Livingston, Rockcastle to Stinking Creek, Knox is 48.9 miles. Distance from Stinking Creek, Knox to Roundstone Creek, Rockcastle is 48.86 miles. Apparently, in 1850, Hez and Betsy were living at least 48 miles away from where they were married. In 1850 the census states they were in North District of Rockcastle which makes me think they were near Roundstone Creek. Do you happen to know??

MA - Thanks for that info! Duh, I had Betsy's birth place in my data base and didn't realize that her birth place does not coincide with census records. In 1810 Woodred Broughton was listed in Buncombe, NC - however, I understand that some families were listed in a certain county even though they were no longer there because they owned land there. Betsy's brother John who was born abt 1806 was born in NC. Her sister Charlotte was born in 1808 in Knox, KY. In 1806/07 Clay County was formed from Madison, Knox and Floyd. I'm still confused about when and where all these county lines were in relation to the Creeks. I want to find a map of SE KY for 1800, 1810 and 1820. I'll start looking for that.
You sent me this note:

Email from Mary Ann - First of the Broughton line to scout out Kentucky. He may have been on NC & KY Census/Tax Lists simultaneously.

I also found this information about Clay County:
"Clay County 1806-1807Clay County The Mother of Many Counties"
<http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ranch/8032/welch.html>
There have been a number of questions as to when Clay County became a county. The Kentucky Legislature created our county on December 2, 1806, but the effective date was April 1, 1807. It did not start doing business as a county until that date. Since this was the case, I feel 1807 should be used. The first deed in book A is dated 07-13-1807...
----------------------------------------
The information I have about Woodred states that he was in Goose Creek (Brush Creek), Knox Co in 1820. Brush Creek is now in Rockcastle and Goose Creek is in Clay - I suppose they could extend into both counties. It appears that Woodred was, indeed, scouting the KY area around the time of Betsy's birth. But in 1820 her family was in Knox. Why would she go "back" to Clay Co?? It doesn't make much sense unless the word "back" was referring to Hezekiah. I can't find any Smallwoods on tax lists or who had land grants in that area prior to 1835 but there were Ragans & Broughtons on the KY Land Grants list:
KY Land GrantsRagan, Owen 50 H 8-29-1821 Knox Big Poplar Cr Ragan, John 50 H 8-29-1821 Knox Fk Big Poplar Cr Ragan, Owen 100 R 7-31-1822 Knox Fk Big Poplar Cr

The only Smallwood in that area during that time period was that Elijah that I haven't identified. He may be the son of Smallwood/Philpot who were in Madison, KY in 1810 but his birth date was earlier than 1784. Also I show that their son Elijah didn't marry until 1815 in Mississippi - unless he was married prior to that to another person. I don't think this Elijah is him.
Elijah Smallwood found in:

I suppose Hezekiah could have been associated with this family, however, like I said in one of my recent email, there were no males his age in this household. I'll do some more searching on Genealogy.com since Ancestry.com doesn't seem to have a complete index.
People were moving around a lot and the borders were changing like crazy. After I analyze the maps and dates maybe I can get a clearer picture.
Thanks again,
Sandy

Betsy Broughton was born in Clay in 1807, so the "back" fits and yes I had noticed that word. Yes, lots of our ancestors jumped counties by just moving to a farm across a border. Oh, what fun!

Email to MA 1/12/05:
MA - I've been reading the History of Knox, KY and I found this interesting....
<http://www.tcnet.net/ky/knox/decker.html>Big Poplar Creek now is in Whitley County......Knox County, as first established, included what may well be said Southeastern Kentucky. In 1806 Clay County was formed from Madison, Knox and Floyd; in 1810 Rockcastle from Lincoln, Pulaski, Madison and Knox; in 1818 Whitley from Knox; in 1819 Harlan from Knox; in 1825 Laurel from Whitley, Rockcastle, Clay and Knox;
Big Poplar Creek was where Owen Ragan settled; it appears to be close to Laurel and Rockcastle counties.
I just can't get it out of my head: three Smallwoods were married in Knox Co. KY between 1820 and 1822 and yet there were no Smallwoods listed in census records in that county. All the Smallwoods were living quite a bit north and/or west of there in Hardin, Bath, Fayette, Jefferson, Montgomery and Shelby. However, there were Broughtons, Moores, Ragans, Hoppers, Evans, Prewitts, Edwards, and Lawsons - all people who were associated with our people in Rockcastle and Laurel. The Smallwoods who eventually settled in Clay Co weren't there yet. Apparently, Hezekiah, Edy and Polly Smallwood were in Knox County before any other Smallwoods were near there. Since Owen Ragan married Jonathan Smallwood's widow, the clues are really strong in pointing to him as being Hezekiah's father. I've downloaded a form to request the marriage bond records for Jonathan Smallwood and India Howard, hoping there will be a date on them. If they were married before 1799, that will be just one more clue.

1822 - Knox, KY - Hezekiah and Elizabeth are married
Since Hez & Eliz were married by the same minister in the same county only 2 years after Polly Smallwood married John Lawson and Edy Smallwood married John Edwards - and the fact that there were no Smallwoods listed in Knox, KY in 1820, indicates the possibility that these Smallwoods were being raised by someone other than their own parents. One of them could be the daughter of Jonathan Smallwood listed in the 1810 census and possibly the sister of Hezekiah (b. 1799).
Smallwood/Philpot's son John went to Lawrence, TN before 1815 and his son Elijah went from TN to Clay, KY before 1835. If Hezekiah was the son of Jonathan then this Elijah would have been his 2nd cousin.
If Hezekiah was the son of Jonathan, he may have had a brother. There were two young males in the 1810 household. There was an Elijah Smallwood in Harlan, KY in 1850. He was in Perry, KY in 1860 and Greenup, KY in 1870. He was born abt. 1809 in NC and I haven't been able to identify him. Harlan, KY is close to these other counties. There was also an unidentified Elisha and Elijah Smallwood in Sullivan, TN in 1830 and in Scott, VA in 1840 (these counties are near each other near the SW corner of VA where TN, VA, NC and KY meet) . Surry, NC is in the NW corner of NC very near these counties. You sent me the wife's name of Elisha Smallwood in Scott, VA - her name was Jane Green. All of these people are unknown to me. I can't find them in my database. I've attached a map showing the location of these counties. The red square indicates their general locations. Located within that square are Surry NC, Scott VA, Sullivan TN and Harlan KY. Harlan, KY is next to Knox, KY. It is possible they were part of those who were in Surry, NC in 1810 and may be related to Hezekiah.

There was a Stephen Ring listed as the witness to the marriage of Jonathan Smallwod and India Howard. He was married to Rachel Smallwood. I think she was a daughter of Elijah Smallwood Sr. - Jonathan's sister, but there's no proof of that. I've done a bit of research on the Ring family and it appears most of them did not go to KY. However, there was a Lucius Ring living in Rockcastle, KY in 1850 - same time as Hez & Eliz. He was born abt 1813 in NC. I haven't been able to find him in other census records. I'm in the process of researching the descendants of Stephen Ring and I'll let you know if anything interesting turns up.
Anyway, there's probably no way to proove any of this, but if Hezekiah was the son of Jonathan then his grandfather was Elijah Smallwood, Sr. and his ancestry can be traced back as follows:
Hezekiah>Jonathan>Elijah Sr>William>James>Lt. Col. James who migrated from England>Matthew from England
------------------THEORY #2
Also located within that red square on the map is Russell Co, VA. This is where the wife and son of Stephen Ring (witness to marriage of India Howard and Jonathan Smallwood) were living. Also on the tax rolls were many familiar Smallwoods and one that I can't identify - Zadock Smallwood. I believe he was closely related to Smallwood/Philpot.

Zadock was in Salisbury, Rowan Co NC 1800 Census and 1810 Washington Co VA census. Also in Rowan NC in 1800 was William Smallwood. I believe this was Wm who married Sarah Philpot. He ended up in Shelby Co KY and some of his descendants went to Clay Co. Zadock was born between 1774 and 1784. It looks like Zadock was living close to James Bidon Smallwood in 1811 and close to Wm Smallwood and Sarah Philot in 1800. William's brothers John and Elijah were living in Surry Co, NC in 1800.
Anyway, we now have two Smallwoods (Zadock and Hezekiah) roaming around NC/VA with no identifiable parents. It's a possiblity that Zadock was Hezekiah's father. He may have died before 1820 and maybe that's why he doesn't show up in census records after 1810, however the name Zadock is a very unusual family name and Hezekiah did not name any of his children Zadock. There are also several other records on Zadock in Russell, VA.
ALL CONJECTURE! I'm still leaning toward theory #1 due to the fact that Hezekiah was in Knox, KY same time as Owen Ragan and the Broughtons - same time period as Hezekiah's marriage there.

Mary Ann - Do you think this land grant could be Polly Smallwood Lawson? If so, who is Elizabeth who is living with John in 1850? Do you think Polly died before 1850 and he remarried? Or do you think Polly and Elizabeth are the same person? I'm beginning to think maybe John died before 1850 and that 1850 census record is a different Lawson. If so, that might explain why Mary would take a land grant in her name instead of his....???

John married Polly Smallwood - his wife's name is Elizabeth. Could that be Mary Elizabeth, or a diff. wife?
Since C.C. was born in TN I'm thinking he may be a step son and Eliz may be 2nd wife. It appears that John was in KY for the last 4 decades, unless he went to TN for a short while and returned to KY.
1860 Census - Laurel Co, KY

Elizabeth, 40, VA - different Eliz - same age as in 1850????

Email from Mary Ann (4/14/04):
There is a nice John Lawson family in 1840 living next to my Grandpa Hugh Forbes and he has a young girl the age of Zelpha for James to marry in 1843! See page 4 of 1840 Laurel... MA
My reply:
I see that and Lemuel Moore is living on the other side. And this John Lawson is the right age for the one who married Mary/Polly Smallwood. If this is correct, then James married his cousin, correct?
Emailto Mary Ann (4/14/04):
Mary Ann - what about this census record? His wife's name was Eliz - not Mary

IT IS NOT KNOWN WHICH POLLY SMALLWOOD JOHN LAWSON MARRIED

Subject: John Lawson
Mary Ann - just realized I already had two John Lawsons in my database. One was born abt 1805 NC - married to Elizabeth b. abt 1820 VA. that was the census record I found in 1850. This couple had son C. C. Lawson who married a Nancy b 1829 KY - they had sons John and George W Lawson abt 1858.
The elder John Lawson's daughter - Zelpha Lawson - married James Smallwood Aug 12 1843 in Laurel Co KY - James the son of Hezekiah and Eliz. Broughton. Zelpha must have died shortly after they married - he married Viola Ann Denham in 1848.
My notes are sketchy so I don't know where I got this info - probably another database. I'm sure you already know about all this.
Maybe the elder John Lawson also had a son John who married Mary / Polly Smallwood. Will keep looking.

Email to Mary Ann (4/30/2004):
Mary Ann - in the census records below Elizabeth is too young to be married in 1820, right? I found another Elizabeth Edwards in Rockcastle Co KY in 1850. She is age 61 born in NC and there is an Andrew, age 24, farmer, born in NC living with her. I guess that couldn't be her either since "Edy" was in KY in 1820 and this Andrew was born about 1826 in NC - unless they moved to NC then back to KY. This Elizabeth and Andrew are still in Rockcastle Co in 1860 but it says they were born in TN and Andy is mulatto. In 1860 living next door to them is a Nancy Moore age 45, Silvester, age 12, Mary, age 10, and James, age 7 with Susan Moore (age 25) and two young children living next door to her. No idea if these Moores are related to Mary Margaret but this Nancy Moore's age seems about right to be her mother.
John Edwards in the 1840 census is in Laurel, age 30-40 but there is no older female living with him. Do you think Edy died before 1840? I think that Rockcastle land grant for Elizabeth Edwards may be for this other Elizabeth. These census records with different birth places and ages are very confusing!
