I can't get it to copy, but there is a site that says this William was son of Elisha Smallwood and the daughter Elizabeth Smallwood married a William Hendricks. So two Williams and Marys in Wilkes....

Email to MA:
MA - I keep getting conflicting information about some of the Elisha and Elijah Smallwoods. Those two names are so similar that I think there may be some mistakes in certain records. For instance, in my database, I show Elijah, son of Smallwood/Philpot, married Mary LeFlore in 1815 in Miss. However I found the following records showing his name as Elisha...I also have an Elisha as one of their sons who married Sarah Clark and went to Georgia. I'm confused.
U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 Name: Elisha Smallwood Gender: male Birth Place: NC Birth Year: 1770 Spouse Name: Mary Le Flore Spouse Birth Place: MS Spouse Birth Year: 1794 Marriage State: of MS Number Pages: 2

As for the mysterious Elisha Smallwood who marked the property that Hezekiah purchased, I have no idea who he is. There is that unidentified Elijah Smallwood living in Clay, KY in 1810. Maybe his name was Elisha???? He may be the son of Smallwood/Philpot who were in Madison, KY in 1810 but his birth date was earlier than 1784. Also their son Elijah/Elisha didn't marry until 1815 in Mississippi and he served in the War of 1812 in Miss. so he may have gone from KY to Miss between 1810 and 1812, if the one in 1810 Clay Co is him.
Census Microfilm Records: Kentucky, 1810 Census State: Kentucky County: CLAY Locale: NO TWP LISTED Series: M252 Roll: 9 Part: 1 Page: 160 Elijah Smallwood Males: 0 0 1(16-26) 0 0 - born between 1784 and 1794 (too young to be son of Smallwood/Philpot??) Females: 1 0 1 0 0
Then there were those Elisha and Elijah Smallwoods in Sullivan, TN and Scott Co, VA that have not been identified....the birth years coincide with the Elisha who was in Clay, KY in 1810. Couldn't find them in 1850 census, but there was that E. Smallwood who had a land grant in Rockcastle, KY in 1850 on Roundstone Cr. They could be all the same people - not sure. Maybe that's why Hezekiah's birth place was shown as VA/NC/SC - maybe they were moving around a lot. I know Hezekiah was in Knox, KY in 1822 and Laurel Co in 1839 when he was assignee for land to Job Broughton (I assume he was the brother of Betsy), so it's uncertain if he was connected to these Smallwoods.

NOTE: might be a son of the Elisha mentioned below in the 1835 Pensioners List.

Tennesseans in the Revoutionary War 1835 Pension Rolls of Tennessee - Sullivan Co SMALLWOOD ELISHA PRIVATE 24TH REGIMENT U. S. INFANTRY Amt Received: $48.00 $00.00 Pension started: FEBRUARY 28 1828
This Elisha must have been born by at least 1760 to have served in the Rev. War. The only Elisha I have in my database who was born that early was the one who married Tabitha Humphreys but according to other information, he died in 1811. He had sons named Elisha and Elijah and they were born in Orange, NC in 1775 - apparently they were twins. They went to Georgia. Interesting: Elisha/Humphreys named a son Riley - Hezekiah named a son Riley.
I think the Elisha Smallwood in Scott, VA had a son Hesekiah who married Phebe Wininger - people we have talked about before. This Elisha and the Elijah are probably sons of the Rev. War pensioner in 1835 Sullivan, TN. These names are the same names in Hezekiah/Betsy's family. It's possible that the Rev. War patriot, Elisha, was the father of our Hezekiah and it's possible that his son Elisha was the one who marked the Rockcastle, KY property for Hezekiah.
From Goodspeed's History of Tennesse:
SULLIVAN COUNTY lies on the Virginia border immediately west of Johnson County from which it is separated by the Holston Mountain.
Sullivan Co TN is in the NE corner of TN next to Scott, VA and close to the border with SE Kentucky and Clay County.
This mysterious Rev. War Patriot, Elisha Smallwood born before 1760 - I've searched for 4 hours all of the Rev War records I can find within that time and, so far, no service records for Elisha Smallwood - only that pension record. I did find one other person who was on that 1835 pension list who lived in Sullivan, TN, but no idea who he is.

Email to MA 6/24/2004:

Maybe our Hez was in NC before he married Eliz Broughton. We know the Elijahs were in Surry NC and Woodard Broughton was in Buncombe NC (1810). There was a Jonathan Smallwood in Surry NC in 1810 with two young males. It wouldn't be John the son of Smallwood/Philpot who were also there because that John was in Shelby KY in 1810. I can't find anything on Jonathan before or after 1810.

1810 Census Surry NC
Jonathan Smallwood (20010-10010) age 26 to 45 Pg 636
Elijah Smallwood Pg 658
William Smallwood (& Mary Grant) Pg 632

I found this marriage record:

North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868
Groom: Jonathan Smallwood
Bride: India Howard
Bond #: 000147422
ImageNum: 003896
County: Surry
Record #: 01 211
Bondsman: Stephen Ring

Since he was there the same time as Smallwood/Philpot he may be an unknown son of theirs who died young. I can't find anything on India Howard either. They may have been the parents of Hezekiah and maybe he was raised by a relative. I also can't find much on Stephen Ring. He married a Rachael Smallwood (b. 1775 NC) in Rowan Co NC but no info on her either. She may have been an unknown daughter of Smallwood/Philpot (they were in Rowan NC in 1800). She might also be a daughter of Wm. Smallwood/Eleanor Noland who were in Surry & Rowan NC (but that was later in 1810/1820). Rachael's husband Stephen Ring died in Aug 1816 and she was in Lebanon, Russell, VA in 1820 living next to Thomas Ring (age 18-26). He was her son. She died in 1850 in Russell, VA and never remarried. I found an Ann Ring living in Shelby KY in 1830. She was age 40-50. That's where Smallwood/Philpot's son Elijah was in 1830 and Smallwood/Philpot were in 1820. I have a feeling Rachael was a daughter of Smallwood/Philpot. There was a Lucius Ring living in Rockcastle Co Ky in 1850 - no idea who he is.

On India Howard: there were several Howard families in 1810 Surry NC but I can't find her in any databases. She probably went by another first name.

Anyway, if Jonathan was a son of Smallwood/Philpot and died before 1820 then his children may have been raised by a relative or India may have remarried and they could have been raised by someone with a different last name. If that's the case we won't find them in census records, but it could explain why Hezekiah seemed to appear suddenly in Knox Co KY in 1822. I'll keep searching in other areas.

Sandy

Email sent 6/29/2004:
After searching all the Smallwoods I could find in Kentucky I'm 90% sure that Hezekiah was a descendant of William Smallwood and Mary Grant. Their descendants were the only Smallwoods living near the Knox/Rockcastle/Clay Co KY area about the same time as Hezekiah - and their descendants were in Surry Co NC. Hezekiah was born in NC (probably). Their son Elijah Sr. (b. 1735/1740, married Sarah) had a son Jonathan "John" born Jan 2 1763. He died in 1812 probably in Surry Co NC. Jonathan married Mary Indes "India" Howard and they had a young male in the household in 1800, age 5-10. I know this is older than our Hezekiah was suppose to be but it could still be him. After Jonathan died India married Owen Ragan and they were in Knox Co in 1820 - close to the year that Hezekiah was married in Knox Co. Also in Knox Co were Jesse and Woodard Broughton. Hezekiah may have been living with Elijah Jr. in 1820. In the 1820 census there is a male age 16-18 who suddenly appears in Elijah Jr's household in Surry Co NC who wasn't there in 1810. Again, this age isn't exactly the age we think Hezekiah should have been in 1820 but it's very close - only 2 years off. In 1850 India (age 80 born in NC) was living in Whitley Co KY with a younger Owen Ragan - maybe a son. Whitley Co is very Close to Knox Co. In 1847 Hezekiah received a land grant in Rockcastle Co. In 1852 an E. Smallwood received a land grant in Rockcastle Co. I don't know who this was but there was another Elijah Smallwood in that area who was born in NC in abt 1809. This mysterious "E" Smallwood could also have been Elijah the son of John Smallwood and Francis Smith but he was in Clay Co in 1850 and 1860. I'm planning to do a lot more research on the Ragan family also.
There is a lot of circumstantial evidence to support this theory but I may not have thought of everything. Any help would be appreciated - if you think of something I may have missed.
Take care, Sandy

Email to Mary Ann (4/28/2004):
I'm still very curious about this land grant...it was issued only 3 years after Hezekiah's

OTHER LAND GRANTS TO SMALLWOODS IN ROCKCASTLE CO KY:
Patent #: 20128 Grantee: Smallwood, E.

County: Rockcastle WaterCourse: Roundstone Cr.
Survey Name: Griffin, John Survey Date: 01/07/1852
Grant Date: 08/24/1852
Email from Mary Ann - As I was giving you the male "E" Smallwood names, I thought perhaps it was Elizabeth Smallwood (women's libber that I am), but I went to the papers on the Grant/Warrant/Survey (I did a lot of business with Brandi in the KY office) and it says HIS heirs, but no other clue as to who "E" might be!

It's probably a close relative of Hezekiah - possibly one of the Smallwoods in Clay Co. Found this:

Elija Smallwood Unknown Townships, Clay, KY 1840

Females: 0 0 0 0 1(20-30) 0 0 1(50-60)
Next Door:
Sarah Smallwood Unknown Townships, Clay, KY 1840
Males: 2(0-5) 1(5-10)
Females: 0 0 0 0 1(20-30)

Another thought - the fact that Hezekiah named his oldest sons James and John - that might be significant (could be named for a brother or father). William Smallwood (father of Smallwood/Philpot) had sons named James, John and Elisha. His son James died 1783 in Frederick, VA but I have no info on his son John born 1732. Do you? Hezekiah could be a descendant of his.

Elisha Smallwood who married Tabitha Humphreys had sons named Elisha, William and Riley. I found a John Smallwood age 26-45 in Fayette Co KY in 1820 and a Humphreys family lived two doors away. This John may be a grandson of John born in 1732. He had one male child age 0-10 who could be Hezekiah and 2 females age 0-10 who could be Edy and Polly.

Jonathan married Mary Indes "India" ? HOWARD daughter of Phillip HOWARD and Mary Mirah DOUTHITT in Surry Co, North Carolina. Mary was born about 1769 in of Surry, NC. She died after 1850 in was in Knox & Whitley Co KY.

One researcher shows that Mary, the daughter of Phillip, was born Apr 2 1769 in Surry, NC and died Apr 24 1789 in Surry, NC. Therefore, Mary Indes Howard may not be the daughter of Phillip

On the 1790 (correction: 1810) Census in Surry, NC Jonathan is living by Elizabeth Howard and Charles Howard in two different households...relatives of Mary? Do we have a death date and place for Jonathan?

Hi: I stumbled across your website and thought I would drop you a line. I was excited to see a "fairly new" Smallwood website. You seem to be very serious about your Smallwood research so I wanted to provide you some additional information. You may already have this...or...you may have already been contacted by another researcher from my group. If so, I apologize for troubling you. Anyway, without writing an email that is 10 pages long, here is a summary of what I wanted to pass on.....

Elijah Smallwood Sr. or Surry County, North Carolina had several "unidentifed" daughters. My research group believes that one of those daughters was Aseneth Smallwood. (Note that she is named after one of Elijahs sisters). We have documentation that shows our William Hill Sr married one Asenath Smallwood. (This comes from the marriage record of one of their sons). Anyway, William and Asenath lived in Sullivan County, Tennessee from around 1809 or so to about 1847). During a short portion of the time that William and Asenath lived in Sullivan County, Tennessee....there was an Elisha Smallwood (Revolutionary War Pensioner) living very close to them. We always assumed there was a connection, but could never prove exactly what is was. I think our theories about this are a little bit different than yours. Anyway, we have looked hard at these families and I wanted to pass this info on to you. I am sure that we have plenty of other information we could pass on...including a possible copy of Elijahs Will.. However, I haven't been doing genealogy much in the last year or two and I may be mis-speaking. Before I go... I would however, like to ask you if you have ever run across any of the following:

(We dont have a researcher with access to these records).

1. A marriage record for William Hill and Aseneth Smallwood. This marriage most likely occured in Surry County, North Carolina area...or Henry County, Virginia.
2. Information detailing who the father of Elisha Smallwood of Sullivan County, Tn might be.

I apologize for the poor quality of my email. I am in a bit of a hurry. I would appreciate hearing back from you though!!!

Thanks again

MY REPLY:
Thank you for your email. I am interested in your theory about who the Rev. War Elisha was. I don't know if Elijah Sr. had a daughter named Asenath. Two of his daughters were Nancy and Eliza. In 1790 there were 5 females in his household, so probably 4 daughters. In 1800 and 1810 there were three younger females. Asenath could have been one of them. Do you know her birth year? I'm also interested in learning more about this possible will. I have not seen the entire will - all I have is an abstract that mentions his wife Sarah, daughters Nancy, Eliza and a Drew Smyth. Also, I have not run across a marriage for Asenath.

Thank you, Sandy

RECD 8/18/2005:
Sandy: Thanks for the quick reply. I hope you don't mind but I gave your website and email information to the person who "facilitates" our Smallwood/Hill research. I think he sorta serves as the respository for the information and documentation we have collected on the Smallwoods over the years.

Now that I think back, I am not sure if we ever received the hard copy of Elijahs will that we were promised. It may have only been the index you describe. The person I gave your email address to should know for sure.

Thanks for letting me know that you havent run across the marriage record we are looking for. We have looked for years...from afar...and haven't located it yet.

I don't have my records in front of me but I think our Asenath Smallwood was born around 1774 in Surry County North Carolina. (At least we think it is Surry County). There are Hills and Smallwoods living in close proximity in the Surry County Census/Tax lists. This..when coupled with the similarity in names between Elijahs sister and our Asenath....the close proximity of Surry County to Henry County, Virginia and Sullivan County, Tennessee......the Elisha Smallwood in Sullivan County and many other things.......has led us to believe that Asenath is one of the unknown...and unnamed daughters of Elijah Smallwood. We are just looking for some way to prove it. A marriage license is the most likely but we haven't found it yet.

Asenath was married to William Hill and living in Henry County, Virginia by 1805. They came to Sullivan County, Tennessee sometime prior to 1810. She is not named in Elijahs will but then again...she had already moved away well before 1810.

Asenath married William Hardin HILL. William was born about 1770 in of North Carolina. He died prob bef 1860 in of Claiborne, TN.
