James married (1) Mary Marinda SMALLWOOD daughter of Elisha SMALLWOOD and Mary Margaret MOORE in 1887/1888. Mary was born in Sep 1865 in Missouri. She died about 1935 in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon.

Betty Jane Branson, Mary's granddaughter, recalls knowing Mary in her childhood. Mary was stricken with rheumatoid arthritis in her later years and was confined to a wheel chair. Betty recalls that Mary lived with them on several occasions. Betty's father, Gus Oren, loved to tell jokes and Betty remembers her grandmother laughing uproariously at Oren's joke telling. She was quite a sight to see, with no teeth, laughing loudly, and slapping her hands on the arms of her wheel chair. She was quite a character.

It has not been proven that the Mary shown in the 1870 Census is actually our Mary Smallwood, however, the dates and other information seem to tie in (birth year, father's birth place, mother's birth place, etc.)

Email from Sharon:
Dora's life was sort of confusing---to say the least : ) In the 1910 census, Dora physically lived in Baker, Oregon. I know this from her granddaughter and great granddaughter. I don't know why George listed Dora as living in the household with him, unless he thought he was supposed to since they were married. As for Dora listing 6 births and 6 children living, that remains a puzzle. She had 8 children and all were living. Charles Walter, Fay (from her marriage to Irenas Taylor), Robert Oscar, Sara Catherine, Nettie, Grace, Hattie and Freddie. Charles Walter was called Walter or Walt. He lived in Eugene across from the street from my grandmother's house. Infact, he built his home, my grandmother's home and his grandson's home---the three houses were all on Garfield Street in Eugene. His birth date is December 16, 1877. We are searching for more documentation, but this info came from his obituary posted in the Eugene Register-Guard on Thursday, February 2, 1956, Page 3 D.

As for whether the Geo Zimmerman listed in the 1880 census is ours or not, we just don't know for sure. I was so sure that his parents were Eli and Elizabeth Zimmerman at one time. Found another tidbit of information and then doubted that they were. It wasn't uncommon for people to give an incorrect age, so this Geo (38) could be ours.

I just read your post listed with the Hickory County inquiries on the usgenweb site for Missouri.
My great great grandmother is Dorcas Cook, daughter of John Cook and Martha E. I don't know if you would be interested in any of the information that I have on her. She married an Irenas Taylor, then George Zimmerman. Dora (as she was called) and George had a daughter, Sara Catherine, who married a Charles Burch, and they were the parents of my grandmother, Pauline Burch.
I don't have any information about John Cook, his wife or Dora's siblings. This is going to sound pretty unbelievable, but I just found Dora in the census with her family about 10 minutes before I discovered your posting! Genealogy is so much fun : )

Hope to hear from you soon.

Just thought I'd let you know that Dora Cook and Irenas Taylor's second son, Fay is not listed with the family on the site. He was born September 9, 1882 in Missouri. I would guess in Deerfield, but I don't know for sure yet. He died January 24, 1955 in Baker County, Oregon. He was married twice. First to Kathryn S. Wroe, marriage date UNK and then to Almeda Mae Buxton on September 16, 1929 in La Grande, Oregon. I have more info if you'd like.

The info on Fay Taylor, son of Irenas Taylor and Dorcas Cook:

Fay and his wife, Katie, were living in Coal Township of Vernon County in the household of Arch B. Gordon. Fay was listed as a "servant" and Katie as "servant's wife. Nellie Zimmerman (daughter of Dora Cook and George Zimmerman) was listed as "servant's half-sister". Census occupation showed Fay to be a laborer on a farm.
