Shem Cooke was born circa 1720 and married Ann Rucker, d/o Peter, circa 1742. Shem appears first in Orange County where he is a witness to a deed of Thomas Chew. I should state here that there was a younger Shem who served as a Capt. in the Revolution from Gloucester County VA so these brothers, Shem and John were probably born there. Shem's brother, John,[proven by DNA] was also in Orange, where in 1753 he sold land in Orange.. Indenture between John Cook, Orange County, and Judith, his wife, and Robert Jackson of Spotsylvania County, Gent., deeds of lease and release ...for £200 grants 550 acres in St. Thomas Parish, Orange...bounded..George Braxton..William Bell.. County line.. Francis Williams.. Brook’s [sic, Brooke’s] line. After residing in Orange both John and Shem move to Amelia and live there for several years. In 1767 John moved to Pittsylvania which later became Franklin County VA, then he moved on to Georgia and died there as did his widow, Judith. Their son, Shem, was killed during the Revolution at Sunbury GA. Their eldest son, Benjamin, predeceased his father, and another son, Joseph, inherited the land that GA gave to survivors of their soldiers. They had a daughter, Elizabeth who married Gideon Rucker, s/o William, who was a brother of Anne Rucker Cooke.
Shem and Ann Rucker Cooke had the following children: James, who precedeased his father and left four children; Elizabeth, who married a Turpin: William, who probably married a Pope and is one of the Williams you have in Franklin Co. NC; John, who married Hannah Winston d/o William Sr.; Dephia, who married Armistead Roberts/Robards, who died in the Revolution; Shem who married first an Elizabeth [probably a Moss], and second, Temperance Blackwell; Felicia, who married Jonathan Stone; and Claiborne who married Frances Yarborough.These are all proven by the Will and estate settlement of the elder Shem.
Capt. John Cooke had several children among them, John Rucker Cooke, David F. W. Cooke and Joseph Cooke. There is a DNA project going on which may solve the ancestry of Shem and John Cooke. If you will give me your line I will try to place it.

I believe that you have misplaced Captain John Cooke of Franklin Co. NC who was the son of Shem and Ann Rucker Cooke. This JOhn Cooke married Hannah Winston, d/o William Winston Sr. Joseph Cooke was their son and possibly married his cousin, Gilly Winston. I have much information on this family of Cookes.

Wilson County, TN. Deed Books. The name Isaac Winston appears on deeds as early as 1814 and as late as 1845. He appears to always be in the area of Falls Creek or Falling Creek. He is also mentioned on a deed for the Cainsville Methodist Church. 1840 Wilson County, TN lists Isaac Winston with 1 male 50-60, 1 female 40-50 (Nancy would have been 46), 1 f 0-5, 1 f 5-10, 2 m 10-15 (Thomas would be 12), 1 f 10-15 (Elizabeth would be 13), 1 m 15-20 (Isaac would be 18), 1 f 20-30. Isaac Winston is not listed in the 1850 census of Wilson County, TN. His name may have been Isaac Anthony Winston or Anthony Isaac Winston.
The DABNEY & FOUNTAIN families were Huegenots, and both related to WINSTON family in VA. Robert F. was evidently son of William C. who was son of Isaac, who was son of ?Anthony? They were said to be from Buckingham Co. VA. In Wilson Co, TN. They were related to a Huddleston family. Several people have searched for years to ascertain just who Isaac was descended from. One clue that I think is important is that they had a son with name Geddes/Gaddes. The name was pronounced Gaddis, but spelled Geddes. The Geddes came from the William Bobby WINSTON line for certain. But I haven't found the connecting link.

Notes: Born in Hanover County, Virginia; moved to Wilson Co Tennessee by 1801; to Madison Co. Alabama in 1810; Owned land near Andrew Jackson's "Hermitage" Known as Captain Anthony Winston He was a gallant Captain in the Revolutionary army. He is buried in the old Winston burying ground just out of Sheffield, Alabama (Vol xiii, DAR Lineage Book). He was a delegate from Buckingham Co. to the convention in 1775.
