This would make our ancestor one of Willia 2 CONC m Penn's first investors. 750 investors purchased the standard package, which included a tra 2 CONC ct of 5,000 acres somewhere in Pennsylvania or New Jersey (un-surveyed, un-cleared, virgin la 2 CONC nd), a building lot in the planned city, and a dividend of 80 acres in the "liberty lands" (f 2 CONC ree of Indians and protected by government) north and west of the city limits. 2 CONT 2 CONT Fellow-investors were chiefly merchants, shopkeepers, and skilled craftsmen from London, Bris 2 CONC tol, and Dublin--most of them Quakers. While only about half of the "first purchasers" cam 2 CONC e to America, Johann Georg decided to make the move. He was accompanied on his move to the N 2 CONC ew York by his wife, Mary, and their 11-year-old son, Bernardhus. 2 CONT 2 CONT Johann Georg brought with him a combination birth-certificate-letter-of recommendation give 2 CONC n by the Council of Wilhelm Moritz, Count of Isenburg and Budingen in 1698. The letter is wr 2 CONC itten on lambskin and affixed with the von Lčahr coat of arms. (Ref. 5 "Vanleer Papers" - Par 2 CONC t 2). In 1937, this document was in the possession of his great-great-great grandson, Phili 2 CONC p M. Van Leer of Pennsylvania. His descent from Johann Georg von Lčahr was: 2 CONT 2 CONT Bernardhus/Bernard/John Franklin I/John Franklin II. 2 CONT 2 CONT Johann Georg anglized his name to "John George Van Leer" (and sometimes as "von Leer"). Th 2 CONC e official "von Lčohr" was still used on legal documents such as his will and marriage certifi 2 CONC cate to his second wife--Rebecca Fauls, who he married at Christ's Church in Philadelphia o 2 CONC n Jan. 15, 1738. He was either a doctor or merchant of drugs in Philadelphia. His will--sea 2 CONC led with the von Lčahr coat-of-arms--is on file at the Chester County Court House. It w 2 CONC as at this point that the Van Leers began a long family relationship with the Waynes. 2 CONT 2 CONT Anthony Wayne I. (father of Isaac and grandfather of Gen. "e" below.) 2 CONT 2 CONT This is the only Van Leer documented to be a slave-holder in Pennsylvania. A tax assessmen 2 CONC t in 1775 (Ref. "b" below) shows ownership of 2 Negroes, 2 horses, 5 cattle, and 4 sheet. 2 CONT 2 CONT A legal document dated March 16, 1784, has also been preserved (Ref. "d" below) in which Dr 2 CONC . Branson Van Leer signified his intention to free a 2 CONT 2 CONT Negro Boy named Cesar when he shall arrive to the age of Twenty one years which will be on th 2 CONC e Thirty-first day of the third month in the year of our Lord one thousand and seven hundre 2 CONC d and ninety-eight. 2 CONT 2 CONT Under Pennsylvania law, any slaves born after 1780 must be freed upon reaching the age of 28 2 CONC . Branson is, therefore, more generous than required by law. His legal document also will p 2 CONC reclude his heirs from transporting Cesar to a slave-owning state should Branson die before 1 2 CONC 798. 2 CONT 2 CONT Dr. Branson Van Leer was one of the original members of the Committee of Observation for Ches 2 CONC ter County, established in December 1774 with Anthony Wayne as chairman. Other members inclu 2 CONC ded William Branson's sons-in-law Thomas Hockley and Richard Flowers. During the Revolution 2 CONC , he was a surgeon in the 4th Battalion of the Chester County Militia under Col. John Ralston 2 CONC . (Ref. "c" below) 2 CONT 2 CONT Branson Van Leer married Rebecca Mather, the daughter of James and Margaret Mather. Margare 2 CONC t died between 1784 when he was mentioned in her father's will (Ref. "a" below) and 1798 whe 2 CONC n her husband died (Ref. "f" below). They had no children. 2 CONT 2 CONT Dr. Branson Van Leer died in Philadelphia during a Yellow Fever epidemic in 1798. A will wa 2 CONC s dictated on his deathbed, leaving all his property to his brother Samuel. There were two w 2 CONC itnesses, both of whom also died during the epidemic.
