1 NOTE Bernardhus Van Leer married Mary Branson in 1733.  Her father, William Branson, was a wealth
2 CONC y investor and early pioneer in iron mining and manufacturing.  In 1744, William Branson bega
2 CONC n breaking up his extensive holdings among his four daughters and sons-in-law.  He made compa
2 CONC nies out of his daughters and assigned extensive property holdings to each.

2 CONT It was a Van Leer grandson, Samuel,  and his descendants that took over the Branson iron busi
2 CONC ness in the next generation.  The Bransons, consequently, played a very important part in th

2 CONT About 1710 Bernardhus returned to Europe to be educated as a physician.  A childhood friend
2 CONC , John Worrell of Marple Township, went with him; they both returned 7 years later as two o

2 CONC ipts in German, French, and Latin.

2 CONT Dr. Bernardhus Van Leer's medical practices were very unique for the comparative wilds of tha

2 CONC nd), a building lot in the planned city, and a dividend of 80 acres in the "liberty lands" (f
2 CONC ree of Indians and protected by government) north and west of the city limits.

2 CONT Fellow-investors were chiefly merchants, shopkeepers, and skilled craftsmen from London, Bris
2 CONC tol, and Dublin--most of them Quakers.  While only about half of the "first purchasers" cam
2 CONC e to America, Johann Georg decided to make the move.  He was accompanied on his move to the N
2 CONC ew York by his wife, Mary, and their 11-year-old son, Bernardhus.

2 CONT Johann Georg brought with him a combination birth-certificate-letter-of recommendation give
2 CONC n by the Council of Wilhelm Moritz, Count of Isenburg and Budingen in 1698.  The letter is wr
2 CONC itten on lambskin and affixed with the von Lčahr coat of arms.  (Ref. 5 "Vanleer Papers" - Par
2 CONC t 2).   In 1937, this document was in the possession of his great-great-great grandson, Phili
2 CONC p M. Van Leer of Pennsylvania.  His descent from Johann Georg von Lčahr was:

2 CONT Johann Georg anglized his name to "John George Van Leer" (and sometimes as "von Leer").  Th

2 CONC n Jan. 15, 1738.  He was either a doctor or merchant of drugs in Philadelphia.  His will--sea

2 CONT An addendum was added to the will in July 1748 to clarify the reason for leaving so little t

2 CONT "On Sunday afternoon in May I preached at the house of George Vanleer, whose wife was on he
2 CONC r deathbed.  The parents and their eldest children had been baptized by Provost Wicksell.  No
2 CONC w, I baptized the three youngest aged 9, 6, and 2 years (respectively).  The reason given fo
2 CONC r the delay was the miserable times.  Their son-in-law had belonged to the English party an
2 CONC d had lost all his property.  They acknowledged their neglect, however, and she was very gla
2 CONC d to see them baptized before her death.  My last visit there on the day before her death, wh
2 CONC ich she expected with christian patience.  I also gave her the Lord's Super.  The text for th

2 CONT Dr. Branson Van Leer was one of the original members of the Committee of Observation for Ches
2 CONC ter County, established in December 1774 with Anthony Wayne as chairman.  Other members inclu
2 CONC ded William Branson's sons-in-law Thomas Hockley and Richard Flowers.  During the Revolution
2 CONC , he was a surgeon in the 4th Battalion of the Chester County Militia under Col. John Ralston
2 CONC . (Ref. "c" below)

2 CONT Branson Van Leer married Rebecca Mather, the daughter of James and Margaret Mather.  Margare
2 CONC t died between 1784 when he was mentioned in her father's will (Ref. "a" below) and 1798 whe

2 CONT Dr. Branson Van Leer died in Philadelphia during a Yellow Fever epidemic in 1798.  A will wa
