William S. Moore. miller and farmer, was born in Greene County, Tennessee, February 20, 1835, the son of Capt. Anthony, and grandson of David Moore, the latter being a soldier in the Revolutionary War. Anthony Moore was a farmer by occupation, and died in Greene County, Tennessee, in the spring of 1880. His wife whose maiden name was Nancy Helt, was also born in Tennessee. William S. Moore spent his youthful days on a farm in Tennessee, and made his home with his father until twenty-one years of age. He then learned the wagon-maker's trade and in the fall of 1858 came to Arkansas, locating in Cane Hill, where he worked at his trade until the summer of 1862, when he joined the Thirty-fourth Arkansas Infantry, Confederate States Army, and served until the close of the war. He participated in the battle of Prairie Grove, and was paroled in the summer of 1865. He then returned home, and formed a partnership with Mr. Pyeatt in the milling business, and erected the Cane Hill Mills, which was in running order by the spring of 1866. The mill has been remodeled and improved since it was erected, and is now one of the finest mills in Washington County. It has a combined roller and buhr process, and has a capacity of about forty barrels per day. They also manufacture some lumber, and in 1869 added a carding machine, which has proved very profitable. In 1861 Mr. Moore married Miss Kate Pyeatt, a daughter of his partner, J. R. Pyeatt, and their union was blessed in the birth of four children: Henry (who is a physician of the county), Charles R., Bettie and Lucy. Mrs. Moore died in 1877, and he afterward married his present wife, Miss Josephine Moore, a daughter of James Moore. She was born in East Tennessee, and was reared in Texas and Missouri. They are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and are worthy citizens of the county. Mr. Moore has a good farm, which he manages in connection with his mill, and a fine orchard of forty-five acres.

William married (1) Katherine J. PYEATT in 1861 in Washington Co, Arkansas. Katherine was born on 18 Sep 1839 in Washington Co, Arkansas.

144. Charles MOORE (Anthony , David , Anthony , Thomas , Thomas ) was born about 1836 in Greene Co, TN. He died on 3 Nov 1863 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Charles Moore married Nancy McNabb of Cocke County, was mortally wounded at the battle of Chickamagua and died six weeks later in Atlanta. Before leaving his wife and small daughter to go to war, Charles wrote in the margin of a book: "When will you think of me sweet friends? When will you think of me?" Charles was the father of Ella Moore who married Frank P Robinson.

On the second day of March 1880, twenty years after John and Rachel Moore, with their little family, started on their western trek from Greenville, Tennessee, another young Moore and his little family were leaving Greenville for the unexplored West. Accompanying this Moore family was the wife's brother-young John G. Ross, who was a distant cousin of John Moore. John Ross was the son of J. Harvey Ross and Polly Marsh Ross who lived on a farm near Greenville. John G. had grown up on this farm and had attended Tusculum College nearby.
But this family of Moores were not bound for Arkansas; they were going to Western Kansas, a country much newer in its development than Arkansas. A distant relative, Reverend Paul Feemster by name, had a mission station there, and they went to him. The loneliness and hardships were too much for the young wife, however, and after a few months they decided to go to the relatives in northwestern Arkansas. They had remained in Kansas long enough, however, for John G. to take out the first papers on a homestead, but his sister would not leave without him, so he left it and went with them.
They reached Arkansas on the first day of July, 1880, and went directly to Cousin John Moore's to spend the night. The next morning John G. went to Moore's mill near by and secured a job at nineteen dollars per month with board, which was considered very good wages for those days. His brother-in-law and sister with their family soon went on to Canehill and left him with his new job.

Joseph married Martha Jane ROSS about 1872 in Tennessee. Martha was born on 20 Sep 1852 in Greene Co, TN.

Rev. Jere Moore, A. M., was born at Tusculum, Greene Co., Tenn., November 6, 1845, the son of Anthony and Nancy P. (Holt) Moore.

The next ancestors were Anthony, born June 26, 1803, in Greene County, and died July 20, 1885; David, born May 14, 1769, in Pennsylvania, and Anthony, Sr., born in 1732, in Pennsylvania, coming to East Tennessee with his family in 1778. The latter, detained a year to raise a company to go through what was then celled "The Wilderness," liked the country so well that he remained here, one of the earliest settlers of East Tennessee. The mother was born in Greene County, March 26, 1807, and died April 18, 1879. She was the daughter of David Holt, of Rockbridge County, Va.

Our subject, the next youngest of eight children, was educated at Greeneville and Tusculum College, and graduated in 1871; then in 1874 graduated from the Lane Theological Seminary, Cincinnati Ohio. In September, 1874, he was ordained by the Holston Presbytery at Kingsport, and for a year was a Presbyterian missionary. He has since preached at Mount Bethel, Oakland, and other churches. He was a member of the General Assembly at Pittsburgh in 1878, and at Saratoga in 1883. He was giving his life to the ministry, when, in 1883, he was called to the presidency of the Greeneville and Tusculum College, which he accepted in June, 1883.

On December 10, 1874, he married Belle R., a daughter of E. E. Mathes, of Washington County, where she was born September 4, 1850. Their children are Myrtle L., born February 8, 1876, David E., born October 7, 1877; A. Hold, born August 19, 1879; Melvin M., born February 8, 1882, Maggie B., born September 21, 1883, and one boy unnamed, born April 23, 1887.

Jeremiah married Isabella Rankin MATHES. Isabella was born on 4 Sep 1850 in Washington Co, Arkansas.
