Your recent information indicates that the N.D. Moore in Laurel Co., KY, and the Nathaniel D. Moore in Greene Co., TN, are possibly different people. N.D. Moore (in the Laurel County, KY census) was married to a Jane Dyche. It looked like Jane might be a nickname for his wife. In the Laurel County Census book for 1850, information indicates that N.D. Moore was married in Greene County, TN, on 24 Oct 1814. The marriage date is the same as the one you have. Is it possible that Margaret and Jane are the same? I have often thought that Mary Moore (married to James Dinsmore in 1808) was the daughter of William Moore and the brother of William Moore Jr. They appear as neighbors and witnesses on land records for our Adam and Samuel Dinsmrore, so it would seem likely. We just can't prove it.

Nathaniel married Jane DYCHE, daughter of DYCHE, on 24 Oct 1814 in Greene Co, TN. Jane was born about 1790 in Kentucky.

I'm afraid I dont have a lot on my Moores. Can't tie Hiram to anyone yet. I was told that either his wifeSarah Evans, or his daughters'(mary Moore) husband (Thomas Young) were Cherokee. I did track the Youngs to Choctaw Indian Territory in Oklahoma. I do know that Hiram Moore was a Civil War soldier. KY infantry.

Hiram married (1) Sarah V. (parents unverified) EVANS, daughter of John EVANS and Sarah HAYNES, on 23 Nov 1836 in Laurel Co, KY. Sarah was born about 1818 in Knox Co, KY. She died on 13 Apr 1888 in East Bernhardt, Laurel Co, KY and was buried in Possibly in McNeill Grounds.

Email to Bev:
Bev - remember that Evans database I sent you with the possible family of Sarah V. Evans? The person who posted the database had an unusual last name - Angel Stonecypher. I had never seen that name before but when I was searching the early tax lists for Greene Co TN I found that name! I have a feeling that Sarah's father John was the son of Evan Evans who was in Greene Co TN with Moses Moore. Evan had a son named John and a lot of the Evans moved to Knox Co KY.
Here's an email I sent to Angel:
Angel - I'm doing research on people who went from Greene Co TN to Knox and Laurel Co KY in the early 1800's. I had never seen your last name before and I found it on the tax list for Greene Co TN. Did your relatives go to KY from Greene Co TN?

Email from Rhonda (5/16/2004):
Hi Sandra, I know my James was born in Greene County TN. My grandpa told me (before he died in 1986) that he could remember his grandparents were James and Mary Moore and he was born in TN. Now the 1860 Census report supports the TN birth, and my grandpa (George D. Moore b 1901) father was William F. Moore and his father was James Moore. According to the death certificate I have for William F. his father was Jim (James) Moore and the mother was listed as unknown. This was info given by another son of William's named Claude Moore. I hope this helps some. The date of birth listed on William's death cert. in Aug. 30, 1850.
Let me know if this helps.

White surnames on both sides (2 on one side and 1 on the other side) - it may have been a plantation or farm with several homes - Some members of the White family were very wealthy:

Alex WHITE, son of Hugh WHITE, Sr., was seven years old when his
father, Hugh WHITE, came to Clay County. He was born in 1800 in
Tennessee. Hugh WHITE was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He
emigrated to Southwest Virginia. His father was probably named William
who owned slaves in Pennsylvania, and when emancipation took place, he
emigrated to save his slaves. He settled near Abingdon. Hugh and his
brother, James, were engaged in the manufacture of salt at King's Salt
works near Abingdon. Hugh WHITE and father, with other members of his
family moved first to Yellow Creek, Bell County KY. Hugh WHITE and his
brother-in-law, Baugh, made salt on Collin's Fork near the mouth of
Baugh's Branch, or England's Branch. The well is still there, called
Baugh's salt well. As late as 1820 Alex WHITE and his uncle, James,
hauled salt from Goose Creek to Powell's Valley, Virignia, and from that
point took it in flat boats to Huntsville, Alabama. With money thus made,
James WHITE, brother of Hugh WHITE, bought a cotton plantation in Alabama.
The making of salt was first from salt springs, then from dug wells, then
from bored wells. Hugh WHITE died in 1856 aged about 81, so that he was
born about 1775 [sic]. This would make him 32 years old when he came to
Clay County. Alex was his oldest son. He died in 1884, aged 84 years
old. Hugh WHITE's wife was Caine. Her relatives still live near
Barboursville [sic]. Hugh WHITE was built about like his grandson, Judge
B. P. WHITE, who resembles his grandfather very strongly. The WHITEs are
of Scotch-Irish descent. Hugh WHITE was worth perhaps $50,000 when he
died. He owned a large number of slaves. When he died his things were
divided amongst his children. He had divided a great many before. He was
a man of broad views. He was a Whig in politics and usually active in
elections. His son, John WHITE, was elected to Congress in the thirties
and went five terms in succession. He was Speaker of the House one or
more terms. Hugh WHITE was a man of bright mind, strong body, and was
active at the time of his death. He was given to drink in his middle life
but was temperate in his old age. He was after the order of an old
British cavalier, large ideas and liberal views. James WHITE died young
and was worth a million dollars. He was a man of remarkable energy. He
made salt and carried on other kinds of business. Hugh WHITE had 13 or 14
children. John WHITE said, "The idea of hauling salt to Powell River and
shipping it to Alabama was original with James WHITE." He made salt on
Goose Creek. Alex WHITE was his manager. He sold the salt at Huntsville
at $5.00 per bushel. His home was near or at Abingdon, Virginia. He ws
one of the richest men in the United States and was worth a million. He
lived in the saddle and was prominent in salt manufacture in Virginia,
King's Salt Works. The Prestons and Robinsons of Abingdon also became
rich in manufacturing salt. There was a salt lake at Abingdon. The
workmen left their tools in the bottom of a deep well one night. The next
morning when the well went down a lighted candle was put on a board and
from the bottom of the well it floated away illuminating the surface of
the lake.

Email to Mary Ann (4/30/2004):
Mary Ann - in the census records below Elizabeth is too young to be married in 1820, right? I found another Elizabeth Edwards in Rockcastle Co KY in 1850. She is age 61 born in NC and there is an Andrew, age 24, farmer, born in NC living with her. I guess that couldn't be her either since "Edy" was in KY in 1820 and this Andrew was born about 1826 in NC - unless they moved to NC then back to KY. This Elizabeth and Andrew are still in Rockcastle Co in 1860 but it says they were born in TN and Andy is mulatto. In 1860 living next door to them is a Nancy Moore age 45, Silvester, age 12, Mary, age 10, and James, age 7 with Susan Moore (age 25) and two young children living next door to her. No idea if these Moores are related to Mary Margaret but this Nancy Moore's age seems about right to be her mother.

Email to Mary Ann (4/30/2004):
Mary Ann - I think Amelia Cox must have been married to Edward Cox's brother. For some reason she, her two kids and Mary Moore are living with Wm Bledsoe in 1850 next door to Edward Cox. Edward married Margaret Bledsoe in 1843 so I assume she is William's brother. I wonder who Wm. Bledsoe assaulted? It doesn't say in that court record. Maybe Edward Cox caught him with Amelia and they had a fight!!

(NOTE: There was a Moses Bledsoe living in Surry Co NC same time as Job Broughton and Elijah Smallwood)
There was a Joseph Bledsoe on the 1811 Clay Co Tax List along with Job Broughton, William Broughton, Elijah Smallwood and
Moor, James
Moor, William
Moor, John
Moor, James Sr.
Francis Tincher and William Tincher (the reason the Tinchers are listed here is because William Tincher married Margaret Smallwood - daughter of Randolph Smallwood and Caroline Bullock and Elias Tincher married Emeline Smallwood, another one of their daughters)
http://www.rootsweb.com/~kyclay2/Tax/1811.htm

I think this Joseph Bledsoe died before 1854 - his will was probated before that date in Clay Co. He's probably the father of William Bledsoe and Margaret Bledsoe Cox.

1850 Clay KY
William Bledsoe, 33, KY
Amelia Cox, 24, KY - not sure who she is but she committed adultery so she must have been married
Elizabeth Cox, 6, KY

I think some of the descendants of William Smallwood and Sarah Philpot had some criminal tendencies - or least bad tempers and maybe the people they associated with did too... I've found several criminal proceedings for Smallwoods in Clay Co. Quite a lively bunch!!!

2nd email (4/30/2004):
In researching those names listed with Wm Bledsoe on the verdict record, I found Thomas M. Bledsoe in Clay Co in 1850 age 34, born KY, Malinda Bledsoe, 19 and Catherine Smith, 13. I assume he is Wm's brother. There were several White families living around him. Also there was Margaret Bledsoe, whom I assume is the widow of Joseph Bledsoe. She was age 62, born VA living either with Edward Cox or next door to him. Two doors away was James Moore and his family.

Found this: 1832 Jan 20 KY Clay Co. Money received from Daniel to settle Jos. Bledsoe estate. Unknown connection. Speculation that this is work as an atty. Or Justice of the Peace.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~kyclay2/Bios/price.htm

There were 2 William Whites in Clay Co in 1850. One was age 36, born in KY married to Eliza with 7 children and 4 other people living with him (Emily Clark 33, Mary Clark, 1, Wm Stewart, 20 and Jane ??, 20). The other Wm White I can't seem to find on the image.

All these people, including Mary Moore, were in the Kentucky District of Clay Co. John (with Fannie Smith), Elijah and Jesse Smallwood were also in that District in 1850. John was on pg 106, Elijah pg 107, Jesse pg 136 and Bledsoe page 101.

James Moore was age 27, b. KY, Elizabeth Moore 24 KY, David 5 KY, Reubin 3 KY, Henry 1 KY. I think he might be Lemuel's nephew, the son of Reuben Moore who was on the page after Bledsoe. This could explain why Mary was living in Clay Co - maybe she was a boarder with Bledsoe or working as a servant near her cousin James and uncle Reuben.

Reuben Moore, 60, NC -- could be Mary's father or uncle (brother to Lemuel??)
Elizabeth, 22, KY
Ephram?, male, 14, KY
Farchy?, female, 12, KY

It's possible the Bledsoe's married into the Moore family at some point and that might be why she was living with Wm.

It makes sense to me that Mary would be living near other Smallwood families when she met Elisha. I still don't know why she was living with Bledsoe, but I'm pretty sure it's her. There are are lot of commonalities here with other Smallwoods and Broughtons.

That Mary Smallwood I found living with near or with a White family in 1880 who was a servant born in TN could have been Mary also. She may have gone back to KY after Elisha died and returned to MO later. She was living in Manchester, Clay, KY with or next to Florence L. White age 25. There was an Ellen White age 60, Mary Jane White age 60 and Sarah White age 56 living with or next to Mary along with some younger people in the White family. Elijah Smallwood was in Big Creek, Clay, KY (age 71), Jesse Smallwood was in Big Creek (age 62), along with about 45 of their descendants. There was a Granville Moore, age 36, and his wife and 2 children living in Manchester next door to a Philpot family. This could be Mary's brother or cousin. There was also a Mary Moore born in the same year as Mary Margaret. She was living with 3 children - no husband. She could also be related.

In 1850 a Mary Moore is associated with William White through Bledsoe and in 1880 a Mary Smallwood is associated with the White family - all in the same county. Most of this is guess work, but I'm feeling more confident about it now.

By the way, Mary Babb Smallwood, the oldest dau of Smallwood/Philpot, married Ledstone Noland who was the grandson of Daniel Noland who married Henrietta Smallwood, the dau of Leadstone Smallwood and Elizabeth Garland. If there is a connection between Mary Margaret Moore and the descendants of Smallwood/Philpot, as I suspect, that could mean that our Hezekiah was also one of his descendants. I have very little information about Leadstone Smallwood's descendants but he had sons named John, James and William - familiar family names. I'll do some checking to see what else I can find on them.

I don't know if it means anything but I found this connection between Thomas Philpot and J. A. Moore in Clay County. This JA Moore lived in Rockcastle Co - Mt. Vernon so this is also a connection between the Philpots in Clay Co and the Moores in Rockcastle Co. Not a marriage, but at least it's something. I'm still looking for more.

Clay County, Kentucky: Thomas Philpot Pension Application

Submitted by: James R. Philpot
6 May 2001
JPhi827018@aol.com

This is a summary of the Revolutionary War pension application of
THomas Philpot. It begins:

"Be it remembered...."

Clay County, State of Ky. Apr. 4, 1837.. Thomas Philpot appeared before the Clay Circuit Court; as a resident aged 74 to apply for a pension per Act of Congress 1832.He stated that he entered the service of the Rev. War the same year of the Battle of 96 District in the State of South Carolina, Laurens County under Capt. Daniel Williams and after scouting with him several months , marched by him to the Island Ford of the Saluda River and there joined Col.
Waters who lived near the said river. Then Marched to the siege of 96. JRP Note: this big battle was named for the court district and court house in SC. There joined Gen'l Greene (Nathaniel) . Crossed out was a reference to
the British General Cruger. Philpot continued with Gen'l Greene during the siege and when information arrived that (British General)Rawdon was coming to aid Gen'l Cruger, Gen'l Greene raised (stopped) the siege. Then marched to
Bobb's Mill on Bush River crossing the Saluda at the said Island from whence we met with a call to go to the aid of Col. Hayes on the Little River at Edgill's Station. Waters was engaged with the Tories under (Bloody Bill) Cuningham a Tory captain. Here they were all taken prisoner and Philpot was paroled. Militia man scouting and scouring the counties of Lauren, Abbeville and Greenville. He was told by Capt. Williams that if he did not turn out(volunteer) he would be drafted & being acquainted with Williams, he volunteered with him as long as the district required and continued with him not less than 11 months before the siege (of 96)scouring the country and had several engagements with the Tories; one at a creek called Long Cane. At Long Cane he had a brother killed and had another killed at White Hall. This service was before the battle of 96. He was continually in service for a day or two at a time. He would serve with Capt. Williams & perhaps not be stationed but a few hours or days until they would have to go out again. He
states that including his services under Greene & at Edgills Station he is certain he did not serve less than fifteen months before he was paroled . He was never home during the whole service. When he went to aid Col. Hayes he
went as an enlisted soldier for not less than 13 months and was taken prisoner and paroled not more than one month from the time of enlistment. He received 3 guineas at the time of enlistment to go to the aid of Col.Hayes.
He said he was well acquainted with Gen'l Greene.
He was born in Laurens County SC the 17th day of Aug. 1763. He has lost the record of his age. His discharge papers were burnt. He made a similar declaration 3-4 years ago but it was sent back for more proof. He found
Brazel Eastis after his first claim . He signs by his mark X.George Stivers a Clergy man and Brazel Eastis both of Clay County made the following statement upon oath: That they were well acquainted with Thomas Philpot and
that he is an honest man but sometimes drinks too much ardent spirits. The said Eastis further states that he knew the said appl. at the siege of 96 and knows he was in the service of Capt. Williams. After the war they became
neighbors and often talked over their service. After the war they moved to different parts of the world and never saw each other until lately. George Stivers Clerk of Court 5 Apr, 1837. Signed by George Stivers. As GGGgrandpa Tom's claim wound its way around the bureaucracy, it was met with many refusals but he never gave up until his death and then wife Nancy started her own petition. Refusal record : Suspended per letter June 1837 to JA Moore and Senator(US Senator from Clay Co.) Hon. John White. It seems JA Moore of Mt. Vernon Ky was TP's attorney.
Our Tom persists and gets another witness: Mar. 25, 1841 - Knox County, KY appeared Obadiah Hammonds said he served with Philpot at the siege of 96 under Gen'l Greene and saw him there. Tom was called an illiterate man in another letter. Letter by JA Moore from Mt. Vernon KY Nov. 12, 1842. "I am much annoyed by the poor old man Philpot of Clay county Ky about his pension." $20 was per month was asked. Moore wrote another letter in 1845 saying that Tom was in a "suffering condition". Moore said he wanted to finish his pension business before the anti-pension
president took office. Wife Nancy Philpot's claim: Feb. 7, 1852 Nancy appeared before Daniel B. Stivers acting JP. ...Nancy States she is the widow of Thomas Philpot and that he never received a pension for his service
during the Revolution and asks it be granted her. Her Attrorney was Isaac Trabue of Frankfort. That she was married to Thomas Philpott on the 15th of June 1792; that her eldest child is in his 60th year. That her husband
served under Daniel Williams and others in SC. That Thomas Philpot died Aug.
6, 1847.

The fact that Mary was living with a Bledsoe in 1850 and the Bledsoes and Philpot descendants were living near each other for several decades makes it likely that Mary knew the Philpot descendants and, thus, she knew the Smallwoods in Clay Co also.

Email from Martha Hansen 3/25/04:
Now about Great Grandma Mary Margaret, I don't anything about her family. I do remember my Mom saying that Mary's parents were from Ireland.
I was wondering about something though, that might be a lead as to her having siblings. When I told my sister about the story of Great Grandpa Elisha Smallwood, I mentioned the name Barter, she said that name is familiar. I was wondering and it is only a stab in the dark, that the two men (Barter and wolf), who were named a the securities of the bond, to pay the money Elisha and Mary owed. Excuse my wording, I need to go back to grammar class. (~: I am rambling, but what I am getting at is; maybe they were Mary Margaret's brother-in-laws. I really doubt that non-relatives would enter into such an arrangement. Yeah, it's a long shot, but who knows, it could be.

NOTES IN WILLIAM BLEDSOE----------------------------------------------------------

Email to Mary Ann (4/18/04):
Mary Ann - as I was researching the Smallwoods in Clay Co KY I came upon the following census record - Mary Moore was living nearby. I have no idea if this is Mary Margaret Moore. I found a Mary Moore, same age, living in Clay Co KY in 1860 - she was living with Francis Moore (female), age 48, Stephen Moore, age 24 and Lucinda Moore, age 2 - I don't think it's the same Mary Moore shown in the 1850 census (I think she is married to Stephen) - but it could be the same one - hard to tell - if it is, and if she married Stephen, they had the same last name when they married. (Can't find them in 1870 or 1880)

1850 Census - Clay Co, KY - pg 101
William Bledsoe, 33, KY
Amelia Cox, 24, KY
Elizabeth Cox, 6, KY
Edward Cox, 3, KY
Mary Moore, 17, Tenn -----------------??????
(NOTE: There was a Moses Bledsoe living in Surry Co NC same time as Job Broughton and Elijah Smallwood)
There was a Joseph Bledsoe on the 1811 Clay Co Tax List along with Job Broughton, William Broughton, Elijah Smallwood and
Moor, James
Moor, William
Moor, John
Moor, James Sr.
Francis Tincher and William Tincher
http://www.rootsweb.com/~kyclay2/Tax/1811.htm
I think this Joseph died before 1854 - his will was probated before that date in Clay Co

There are three James Moores listed in Laurel Co KY in 1840 living near Lemuel Moore. One is age 40-50. James Moore Sr is age 50-60 and next to him is James Moore Jr age 20-30. They all have females under the age 5. There are no James Moores listed in Laurel Co in 1850 - but there is a James Moore in Clay Co KY a few doors away from the above Mary Moore - too young to be her father, but maybe a cousin or brother. No way to know if he's related to the James Moores in 1840 Laurel.

1850 Census - Clay Co, KY - pg 101
James Moore, 27, KY
Elizabeth, 24, KY
David, 5, KY
Reubin, 3, KY
Henry, 1, KY

There is a Reuben Moore in 1850 Clay Ky page 100 - he's age 60. No idea if he's related to this Mary or James but probably is above James' relative since James named a son Reubin.

Reuben Moore, 60, NC -- could be Mary's father or uncle (also could be brother to James who was here in 1840??-see below)
Elizabeth, 22, KY
Ephram?, male, 14, KY
Farchy?, female, 12, KY

In 1840 there was another James Moore in Clay KY. He could be the above James Moore's father or uncle.

1840 Census - Clay Co KY
James S. Moore
Males: 1 3 1 1 0 1(30-40)
Females: 0 1 0 0 2 1 - no females age 0-5, but a female age 5-10 could be Mary

It's possible that Mary was in Laurel KY in 1840 and in Clay KY in 1850 - maybe working as a servant for Bledsoe.

Also, there were Smallwoods in Clay Co KY at the same time as the above Mary Moore. Elijah and William were living not too far away from the above Moores. These were the sons of John Smallwood and Francis Fannie (Jemima?) Smith. Elijah was age 36 - 15 years younger than our Hezekiah. He could be the E. Smallwood who got that Rockcastle Land Grant in 1852- one year before Elisha married Mary.

SMALLWOODS IN CLAY COUNTY IN 1850:
Name: Smallwood, Jesse
Page: 136
Name: Smallword, Elijah
Page: 107
Name: Smallwood, William
Page: 106

If Hezekiah was related to the Smallwoods who were in Clay Co KY, maybe Mary Moore met Elisha through them. Of course, I don't know if the above Mary Moore is the right one!! This one was born in TN in about 1833/34. Also have no idea how our Hezekiah might be related to Elijah, Jesse and William. Their father John was born before 1784 in NC. Since our Hezekiah may have been born in NC - this looks promising.

John Smallwood was married at least twice - maybe three times. His descendant, Gary Smallwood, sent me a huge file and his database is listed on rootsweb. He's not sure if Francis Fannie Smith is also Jemima Smith. The following marriage records were found for John:

Kentucky Marriage Records:
Russell, Jinny Smallwood, John 15 Jan 1815 Kentucky Shelby County
Smith, Jemima Smallwood, John 25 Jan 1808 Kentucky Clay County

But his will refers to his wife Fanny. He died Dec. 1821 in Lawrence Co TN. (BTW there was a James Moore in Lawrence TN in 1830 - no image available)

John was the son of William Smallwood and Sarah Philpot. Their children were:
Mary Babb Smallwood, married Ledstone Noland - he died in Estill Co KY
Elijah - died in Mississippi
Randolph - died in Owsley Co KY
John - died in Lawrence TN (the one referenced above who was in Clay KY in 1808 when he married Jemima)
Samuel - died in Jasper Co IL
Elisha - died in Hall Co, Georgia
William - probably went to Georgia since his son Marke was born there
Nancy - married Andrew Smith
James - probably went to Georgia since his son Thomas was born there.

I guess Elijah, Samuel, Elisha, William and James can be ruled out as possible fathers for Hezekiah - they went to Mississippi and Georgia. Randolph and John were in KY. Samuel probably stayed in KY - some of his kids were born there - but he ended up in IL. I haven't done census research on him or Randolph yet. Randolph was born 1780 in MD and married Rebecca Ashcraft - don't know marriage date. They had Margaret (1808), James (1810), Elizabeth (1814) and William (1819). It's possible they could have had a son Hezekiah in 1799/1800. John would not be a candidate for Hezekiah's father - in 1810 census there were no males his age. Samuel was too young to be Hezekiah's father (born 1791). Of Wm and Sarah Philpot's children - only Randolph seems possible as his father. The others are too young except Elijah and he went to Mississippi and married Mary Leflore of the Choctaw Nation in 1815.

William's brother was Elijah, the one you mentioned the other day who was in Surry Co NC at same time as Job Broughton. You said he was ruled out as Hezekiah's father...but there is that connection between this family and the Broughtons. And now there is a possible connection between the descendants of this family and the Moores in Clay KY.

This is a lot to consider and may not even be relevant, but worth pursuing I think.

Sandy

Email to Mary Ann (4/24/2004):
Mary Ann - Several Pruitts married into the Moore family in Rockcastle Co.

Robert Moore................... Sarah J. Pruitt.......................... 05 Nov 1885

W. B. Moore .................... Mina Pruitt............................... 12 Dec 1886

John Pruitt ..................Elizabeth Moore............................ 18 Mar 1886

And, of course, Joseph Pruitt married Nancy Moore (may have been her married name) in 1845 Rockcastle. In addition, Wm Broughton married Winniford Moore in Laurel Co. I know who Sarah Jane Pruitt is, but I don't know who Mina Pruitt is. Do you have any info on her?

I found several Moore families living in Rockcastle Co who were lawyers and merchants. One of them was a William B. Moore - this W. B. Moore may be a descendant of his. I'll recheck those families again, although I didn't find a dau Mary who was the right age. I think there was one who was several years younger than her.

Thanks, Sandy

When the war ended in the spring of 1865, all Vernon County lay devastated. Hardly a hundred families remained and all the towns, with the partial exception of Balltown, had been destroyed. Few farms were left untouched. Kansas Jayhawkers had stolen even the fence rails! Public business, untended for four years, were in hopeless disorder.

Ex-Confederate soldiers drifted home through the summer, shortly joined by Union veterans seeking new homes. As a rule they cooperated to rebuild the ruined country, which began to wear the look of the real pioneer times, thirty years before. Buildings went up in Nevada and by early 1867, business had revived. The county government first operated from Balltown, but in 1868 a new brick courthouse was built. On March 3, 1869, the town was incorporated and the word "City" dropped from its name. The new city fathers hired a marshal to keep the peace, laid down some board sidewalks and started Deepwood Cemetery.

Small Hogs $6.00. 1 Breaking Plow $4.00. Old Harrow $2.00. There is no mention of Nancy Jane
Smallwood, my great grandmother. I am assuming the reason was she was not a minor child. ??? The
first time they name the children, John is listed; but not the second time listed. ???
What was Elisha doing in Arkansas? Was the family living there?? At this moment I remember written somewhere that Mary Smallwood tried to get a pension from Elisha military service; but was denied. Lady at the library stated many were denied pensions if they had not served 3 years.

E-mail from Martha Hansen (3/4/2004):

Re: Elisha Smallwood: My Mom told me that she was told, that after the Civil War he left on his horse looking for work and never came back. It was assumed that he died. The story my Mom always heard was that he had a hernia and he wore a truss. It was supposed that if he had to take it off that he may not have gotten it back on, because his wife was the only one that could get it on for him. Maybe the caused his death. Well, I did a bad job of telling that story. But you get my drift. Emma was very little when he died. She probably heard bits and pieces, at a young age and thought that was the truth. She in turn told my Mom and hey, I would have never known if I had not talked with you and Juanita. So thanks again.

Martha also stated in another e-mail that her sister has a framed picture of Elisha Smallwood. She's going to ask her to make a copy and send it to me. That would be great!

MY NOTES:
I'm starting to put 2 and 2 together now. Here's one possible scenario: Elisha was mentally stressed out by the Civil War and losing his father and possibly his brother William. He may have decided that he couldn't handle the responsibility of a family and took off for Arkansas. Apparently, he didn't tell his wife or family this bit of news. He simply didn't come home. Trying to make ends meet, Mary sends her children off to live with friends and relatives, applies for a widows pension and is denied. At some point Mary finds out that Elisha was killed in 1878. Can you imagine how she must have felt? Knowing that he just left them to fend for themselves while he was buying land and running a business? Wow! Elisha was in Missouri in 1870 census. Clara was born 1874. She may have been wondering about his fate for 4 years! That poor woman! And I think I have problems....yeah, right!

Mom used to tell me that her Grandpa Elisha Smallwood was Pennsylvania Dutch, and that his family came from Holland. I guess that is just something else to play with. I keep racking my brain to jog my memory.
