From "Historic Greene County, TN and Its People: 1783-1992, copy in possession of submitter:

According to tradition, James Moore's ancestors came from northern Ireland and lived in North Carolina. James, whose name appears on the 1796 Greene County tax list, is the first of his line known for certain to have lived here. His wife's name is believed to have been Frances. Both were born circa 1760 and were married about 1792. They had seven children. Four of their sons, John, William, James Jr. and Jesse, left Tennessee. They had two daughters. Mary married William Woods and Nancy married William Thomason. They, and one son, George Washington Moore, lived out their lives in Greene County. James Sr. owned no land until 1816 when he purchased a farm near Lost Mountain. There is a record of his sons Washington and Jesse attending a school taught by the Rev. David Forrester. They each paid $1.00 for three months' schooling. Later, James purchased another farm about 3 miles distant from the first, located on Cedar Branch of Lick Creek. Here Washington Moore lived after his marriage and after his death he willed it to a grandson also known as Washington Moore. It continues to be known as the "old Wash Moore place." Most of what is known of this family comes from letters written to William and James Moore, Jr., who had moved to Indiana in the 1830's. Family members here wrote the brothers that times were hard and money was scarce. Bacon cost 4 cents per pound. Corn sold for 50 cents per bushel and wheat for $1.00. The brothers received word in 1839 that their mother had died and was buried "in all kinds of decency" at Roaring Springs graveyard beside seven of her grandchildren. Their father died in 1842 and they were urged to return home as soon as possible to help settle his estate. James Sr. chose to be buried on his own farm at Lost Mountain, on a hill overlooking his home. His coffin faced west rather than east and this caused superstitious neighbors to believe his spirit haunted the area.

From Greene County, TN Settlement Book: 5 Apr 1841. On motion of Jesse Moore and Sylvanus Olinger, who entered into bond with William Woods and George W. Moore, their securities, in the sum of $3000 payable and conditioned as the law directs, administration is granted them on the estate of James Moore, dec'd, and the said Jesse Moore and Sylvanus Olinger having taken the oath of Administration, it is ordered that __?__ to them accordingly.

3 Jan 1842. The petition of William Woods was presented setting forth that himself with Geo. W. Moore has become insolvent, or nearly so, and that he is apprehensive from the management of said estate by the administrators that he is in danger of becoming liable by reason thereof and praying the relief provided by the law. Whereupon it is ordered by the court that a summons issue, requiring the appearance of said administrators at the next term of this court to answer said petition and give security for the indemnity of the petitioner, as required by the law in such cases.

6 Nov 1843: The report of a settlement of the estate of James Moore, dec'd, made by the clerk of this court, with Jesse Moore and Sylvanus Olinger the administrators, was presented for confirmation -- whereupon came William Thomason, one of the heirs-at-law of the deceased, and opposed the confirmation of the same and prays that said settlement may be continued over until the next court, and that subpoena be granted him for witnesses -- all is ordered accordingly.

Moore have this day ... sold ... to Jesse Moore for $130 all title,, interest, and claim to a certain tract of land belonging to James Moore, dec'd of whom we are the lawful heirs, the same land being in the State of TN, county of Greene, lying on Caney Creek, a branch of Lick Creek, adjoining James Murphy, Alexander Robertson & heirs of Archibald Campbell, containing 150 acres. We are lawfully seized of our parts and shares of said land and have good right to convey it, and the same is unencumbered. 17 Dec 1841. Wit: Sylvanus Olinger, Samuel Cooter. 6 Nov 1843.

Book 20, p. 642: Jesse Moore to James Murphy for $480, four undivided shares in 2 tracts of land, which tracts descended from James Moore, dec'd to his heirs-at-law, being 7 in number, and the shares conveyed are those of myself, Wm. Moore, James Moore, ,and Geo. W. Moore ... the first of said tracts lies on Caney Creek and is bounded as follows ... contains 100 acres more or less ... the 2nd tract lying on the waters of Caney Creek ... to Edward Murphy's corner ... to Moore's line, to Robertson's line, to Murphy's corner, containing 50 acres. The undivided shares of Wm., James, and Geo. W. Moore having been conveyed by them to me, I have good and lawful right to convey them and they are unencumbered. 13 Nov 1845. Wit: Thomas Lane, Cr., V. Sevier.

Book 24, page 473: Joseph Dodd & Frances Dodd, heirs-at-law of James Moore, dec'd have bargained and sold ... to James Murphy for $12 one undivided share in 2 tracts of land descended from James Moore, dec'd to his heirs-at-law, being 7 in number. The share we convey is 1/6 part of the share that Wm. Woods and Polly his wife, heirs-at-law of the said James More ... containing 100 acres... the 2nd tract lying on the west of Caney Creek, bounded by Murphy, containing 50 acres ... to have and to hold the undivided share in the same said James Murphy. 3 Mar 1851. Signed Joseph Dodd, Frances Dodd, Wit: James Shanks, Geo. W. Moore. (Note: Frances Woods Dodd was the daughter of Wm. & Mary (Polly) Moore Woods. She inherited 1/6 of her mother's part.

Abraham White to heirs of James Moore, dec'd: (no date given) be it remembered in the year of 1823 or 1824, I, Abraham White, sold to James Moore, no deceased, on Cedar Fork of Lick Creek, 100 acres for the sum of $400. The deed was lost and I now make this deed to the heirs of James Moore, to wit, John Moore, William Moore, Nancy Moore wife of William thomason, Polly Moore wife of William Woods, James Moore, Jesse Moore, and Geo. W. Moore. . . on Cedar Fork of Lick Creek, known by the name of Horse Camp Fork.

Deed Book 20, p. 613: William and Nancy Thomas to Geo. W. Moore: Undivided shares of 4 tracts of land on Cedar Fork of Lick Creek, for $125, same tract conveyed by Abraham White to heirs of James Moore -- 100 acres, and also our undivided share and interest in and to 3 tracts of land in the county aforesaid all entered by the said James Moore and granted to him by the State of TN. The first tract contains by estimation 50 acres more or less and joins the above tract of 100 acres; the 2nd tract contains by estimation 75 acres more or less and joins the above tract of 100 acres; the third tract contains by estimation about 11 acres more ore less.

A James Moore, believed to be ours, appears on the tax lists for Greene County from 1790s - 1816. However, he was listed as owning no land until 1816, when he purchased 100 acres from Andrew Patterson. He later purchased 50 acres from Sarah Newberry that joined the Patterson purchase. This is the Caney Creek land, but not all of it. The other appears to have been purchased from his son-in-law, William Thomason, and sold to David Forrester. However, there is no deed on record that I have been able to find where William Thomason made a deed to James Moore. I suspect James neglected to have the deed recorded, and also the land grant from the state of TN for 86 acres in 2 tracts. I think he may have lived on the land granted by TN prior to his purchase of the Patterson land. The Patterson & Newberry land was located about 3-4 miles from the land he purchased from Abraham White. The grant from the State joined the Abraham White land. All of it lay in the 16th Civil District of Greene County.

Deed Book 115, page 245. State of TN to George W. Moore, 1st day of April, 1850, tract of land containing 205 acres, lying in the County of Greene on the waters of Lick Creek adjoining lands of John Dodd and others, corner with Jacob White's heirs, corner to an 11-acre tract, to Lane's Corner, Woods' Corner, south to a 100-acre tract, along Bartley's line. By the Governor, W.B. Campbell. (Note: This land joined the Abraham White land, and the land grant property of James Moore, father of G.W.)

W. Trousdale, Gov. of TN. (Betty notes that this is the place she lived as a child. W. Moore in a large amount of money, containing a power to sell undivided share of land in case the said debts were not paid on 16 Aug 1843, and the said debts not being paid, I have proceeded according to the terms of the said trust deed to sell the undivided shares at public sale, and have struck and sold same to Andrew Logan for $67.50, that being the highest and best bid, and it appears to me that James Murphy paid to said Andrew Logan __ dollars and redeemed the said undivided shares of land, therefore, by the power vested in me by said deed and in consideration of the sum of 67.50 paid and applied according to the trust, I as trustee do transfer and convey to said James Murphy all right and title of said warranty in said deed in me contained in as full a manner as under said deed. 13 June 1851. From Ivan Moore, 1212 Royal Road in Quincy, IL: This is an excerpt from a short family history written by a great aunt. James and William Moore came to Indiana from Greene County, TN in the early 1830s and settled for a time in Daviess County, IN. James Moore received a land grant deed 1 Aug 1839 signed by Martin Van Buren, who was then president of the U.S. James and William received word of their parents' deaths by letter from other brothers living in TN. Their father died 4 Mar 1841, and their mother died 7 Oct 1839. Both died in Greene County and were buried there. (These letters were in the possession of Daisy Moore Bynum who is the youngest child of John Dillon Moore and Catherin Slinhard.) One son, James Moore, was born 1803 and died 1856. He married Polly Ann Dillon who was born 1817 and died 1855. There were 9 children born to this couple I suspect that both were born in TN and probably married in TN. Both were buried in IN.

Minerva Evans married to Edmond Moore on March 31, 1838 Clay Co KY. Also, I
have a Margaret Evans b abt '1786' married to James Moore of Knox/Clay Co

Kay Lou,

James Moore was born in 1783 in Greene Co. He would have been abt 26 in
1809. I believe that Moses Moore and Elizabeth Davis are his parents but I am
only using circumstantial evidence to make the relationship. Moses Moore and
Elizabeth Davis were married in 1782 in Greene Co. Two of James Moore's sons were
named Moses D. Moore and Campbell Davis Moore. I assume that the D. in Moses'
name could also be Davis and these 2 boys were given the grandmother's middle name
and with Moses D. also named after the grandfather.

John,

I visited your web site today - the one about Tryon - I noticed a reference to a Moses Moore. That page wasn't finished yet. I'm trying to find information about a Moses Moore who was in Greene Co. TN in 1805 and I believe moved to Laurel Co KY before 1808. Greene Co TN was part of Washington Co NC until about 1790. The following information was found referring to Moses Moore as a Captain. I can't find information on him in Rev War records but he may have been a captain in the War of 1812 - he was listed in those records in the 15th Reg, Slaughter's Kentucky Militia. He may have been married to Elizabeth Davis in Washington Co NC/TN. There were so many Moses Moores I'm not sure which one he was. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Sandra

This Moses was not Capt. Moses Moore- he died in 1810 - married Elizabeth VanCleve (genealogy.com)

I found something interesting. There were a LOT of Chesnuts in Laurel Co KY and I discovered that one of them married Esther Evans, sister of Margaret Evans, in 1801 Greene Co TN. Apparently the Chestnuts and Evans also came from Greene Co TN - at least some of them. Margaret Evans married James Moore, son of Moses Moore. Margaret and Esther's father was Even Evans - wife so far unknown. Abraham Chestnut was born in Augusta Co VA. There's that connection to early Virginia again. It looks like the Chestnuts, Moores and maybe the Evans families migrated from Virginia to TN to KY.

50. Lemuel * MOORE (James * , William , Thomas ) was born about 1772 in Virginia. He died before 1860 in Laurel Co, KY.  THIS IS HAS BEEN DETERMINED TO BE INCORRECT - LEMUEL WAS NOT PART OF THIS MOORE FAMILY

Email to Ronda:
Ronda -

James Moore (b. abt 1879), the son of William F. Moore and Catherine Milburn (I believe she was the 1st of 3 wives including Martha Overbay and Tilitha Bussell) was in Wilton, Knox Co, KY in 1910 and 1920. In 1930 James was in Corbin, Whitley, KY. Corbin is the same town where some other people from Laurel Co moved including descendants of Thomas Young who married Mary E. Moore, daughter of Hiram Moore. Hiram has not been connected to William F. Moore yet, but it's possible that they are closely related. If so, that could mean that Lemuel Moore (probable grandfather of Wm. F. Moore) was also related to Hiram Moore. Hiram was the son of Moses Moore who was in Greene Co TN until abt 1805 when he moved to Laurel Co KY. Lemuel wasn't listed in Greene Co TN but there was a Samuel and those names are very similar - it could have been a misspelled name. Moses was born abt 1762 in VA and Lemuel was born abt 1772 in VA. Both were in TN and ended up in Laurel Co. There's a chance that the father of Moses (and possibly the father of Lemuel) was a James Moore from PA (b. abt 1735) who could have been related to Anthony Moore from PA. James was also in Greene Co TN in early 1800's. Anthony was in Greene Co TN from abt 1783 until he died there in abt 1822. Anthony's family is well documented and none of them moved to Laurel Co. Most of them stayed in TN. David Moore was his only son. Another possible link: a descendant of Lemuel Moore indicated to me that she was told her ancestors were from PA.

I have suspected for some time that Lemuel was related to Moses but could not find a connection. The fact that his gr-grandson moved to the same town as a descendant of Moses Moore give me at least a slight connection.

There was a Lemuel Moore in Laurens, SC 1800 at the same time as Ephraim Moore, son of Thomas Moore and Rosannah Fowler whos family was in Knox Co KY by 1802. The chances are good that Lemuel was related to this Moore family. He may have been a nephew of Thomas Moore.

RESEARCH NOTES:
I found a few Moores near Stinking Creek, Knox Co KY in 1820. Didn't see them before because they were indexed as Woon and Wood. Isaac, Aaron and John - could be related to Lemuel

1820 Census -

Jesse Broughton Goose Creek,Knox,KY 1820

In Brush Creek:
Isaac Moore (200010-20010) - male age 26-45 (born between 1775 and 1794)
In Little Raccoon (Little Rockcastle):
Aaron Moore (210001-11010) - age 45+
John Moor (120001-00101) - age 45+

There are other references to Isaac in Knox Co. He was in Knox Co in 1830. There was an Isaac Moore in Laurel Co KY in 1860 whose children were born in TN - he wasn't there before 1860. He could be related to Lemuel as well as the older Isaac who was Knox Co KY in 1803-1806) I'm still looking. The people listed with Isaac on the following tax lists are Thomas who married Rosannah Fowler, his son Jesse (may have been the Jesse Moore who helped formed Laurel Co), an unknown William (may have been the one who filed for Rev War Pension in 1835 Rockcastle Co), and unknown John Moore (see notes below). Thomas and Rosannah's children are fairly well documented and there is no John, Isaac or Lemuel.

NOTES ON JOHN MOORE:
http://www.tcnet.net/ky/knox/decker.html
Apparently there was a John Moore in Stinking Creek, Knox Co KY by 1802:
A Knox County road order dated August 2, 1802, reads as follows: "Beginning at the State Road near the house of Thomas Goodin, leaving the house and plantation of the said Goodin on the right hand, thence nearly along the now Trace up Stinking, leaving the house and plantation now occupied by John MOORE on the left hand, still keeping along the present trace, leaving the house and plantation whereon John Baker now lives on the right hand, still continueing nearly along said trace to the head branch of the left hand fork of Stinking Creek to the top of the ridge dividing the waters of Stinking Creek from the waters of Goose Creek."

Could the Polly Moore referred to below be related to John Moore?
Knox County Court August Term 1865.
The report of Allen Goodin gate keeper of Knox Country for this quarter ending 26th August, 1865 was this day produced to Court, sworn to and ordered of record, as follows, to wit: the amount of toll taken in at the Toll Gate at Polly Moore's (Log Mountain) in Knox County was $258.90, after taking the gate keeper's salary for his services for the quarter $43.75, leaves to be expended on the roads $536.90, on the State Road $413.01, on the Goose Creek Road $125.89.

(There was a Lucretia Moore in Rockcastle Co KY in 1830 (00001-000001) - female age 30-40)
Next Door:
Thomas Moore (310010001-10001)
John Moore (100001-011001)

Moores with initial "L":
There was an L. Moore in 1820 Bertie, NC
(300010-00010) - no young females - can't be Lemuel

There was a John L. Moore in Jefferson Co KY 1820: (David Moore next door - age 26-45)
(330001-00101) - male right age but only one young female age 16-26 (could be Nancy)
Probably not Lemuel - Jefferson Co is in Northern KY

There was a George L Moore in Rutherford, Rutherford, TN in 1820:
(200001-00001) male age 45+ (Right age but no young females
Same page: James C. Moore (210010-50010) - age 26-45

There was a Thomas L Moore in Williamson, TN in 1820:
(220010-0201) - could be Lemuel but where is Williamson Co? It's toward the east-east of Rutherford Co.
Probably not Lemuel

A possible relative:
MOSES LEMUEL MOORE
Male
Birth: 06 OCT 1860 , Washington, Tennessee
Death: 22 JAN 1924
Parents:
Father: JAMES MOORE - could be the James Moore who was in early Greene Co TN
Mother: LULITICA SEXTON CARSON - there were Carsons in early Greene Co TN

What if our Lemuel is actually the Moses or James Moore who was in Greene Co TN with Anthony? There were a lot of James's in that group and maybe he decided to go by his middle name to avoid confusion. OR - what if Lemuel was actually the Jesse Moore who served in the original group who formed Laurel County? Lemuel's wife was Ann. I found this will of Jesse Moore (Lemuel disappears from census records after 1850, so the timing is right):

Whereas Jesse MOORE late of Laurel County and state of Kentucky departed this life domiciled in the county and state aforesaid having first made and published his last will and testament which was after his death duly proven and admitted to record in the Laurel County Court in which will then is the following clause, to wit: The first of my Devisees is my beloved wife whom I will shall have one third of my entire estate both real and personal after the payments of my debts during her natural life and after that to be equally divided between my children or such of them as is by my will made devisees or she may elect to take a child's part absolutely or she may elect to take one thousand dollars instead of either of the above specifications: Now in persuance of the provision of said will, I, Margaret Ann MOORE widow of the said Jesse MOORE do by these presents elect to take under said will the bequest of one thousand dollars in preferance and intead of either of the other provisions made for me by said will.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of June 1859.
Margaret Ann MOORE
State of Kentucky, Laurel County

Jesse was married to Margaret Ann Cathers and they had a daughter named Nancy in 1802. Nancy Moore who married Joseph Pruitt (believed to be the daughter of Lemuel) was born about that time. Also Jesse Moore was born in Culpepper Co VA. Lemuel was born in VA at close to the same time.

What if Lemuel was actually Jesse Lemuel Moore? Or James Lemuel Moore? Or Moses Lemuel Moore?

I will start to search in this direction and see what else I can come up with.

Thanks!
Sandy

If he was the same Lemuel Moore who was involved in forming some of the counties in TN this could explain why he was living in different counties in 1810, 1820 and 1830. Also, the fact that TN counties were being split up quite often during that time span would explain it.

CANNON COUNTY, TENNESSEE

WARREN, COFFEE, WILSON AND RUTHERFORD FURNISHED THE TERRITORY

CANNON COUNTY was cut off out of lands lying East of BEDFORD, and Warren, Coffee, Wilson and Rutherford counties each furnished part of the territory for CANNON,which was established January 21, 1836. Although it joins BEDFORD on the East the Bedford Territory was not disturbed, as it was at that time. DANVILLE was the name of the County seat until the name was changed to WOODBURY. Most of the land belonged to HENRY McBROOM and his brother at the time, and HENRY WILEY had a store there. Later the McBrooms built what was called the DILLON HOTEL, which was burned in 1907.

The first meeting of the County court was held in McBroom's Tavern in May, 1836. Present as magistrates were the following persons:

Thomas Powell
Joseph Simpson
Isaac Finley
ISAAC W. ELLEDGE
I. M. Brown
F. L. Turner
John Melton
William Bates
William B. Foster
Martin Phillips
REUBEN EVANS
Peter Reynolds
Joel Cheatham
Allen Haley
Blake Sedgley
Jas. L. Essary
John Pendleton
Elijah Stephens
C. C. Evans
Samuel Lance
John Martin
John Frazer
LEMUEL MOORE
James Goodwin
James Batey
Jonathan Fuston

The following persons were selected to hold the various county offices and qualified at the above meeting:

SAMUEL J. GARRISON, County Court
Clerk.
GEORGE GRIZZIE, Sheriff.
ALEKANDER F. McFERRIN, Register.
JOB STEPHENS, Trustee.
ALEXANDER McKNIGHT, Coroner.
HENRY H. CLIFTON, Ranger.
(I wonder just what the
office of "Ranger" was?)
WILLIAM STONE, Entry Taker.
HUGH ROBINSON, Surveyor.

HUGH ROBINSON, JAMES CLARK, ARCH. STONE, WILLIAM BATES, JOHN B. STONE and JOHN BROWN, were appointed to lay off the town lots for sale.

ABOUT SOME OF THE FIRST MAGISTRATES OF CANNON COUNTY

The next year after CANNON COUNTY was established the county of DeKALB was established and part of the territory for that county was taken from Cannon. A check of the names of the first magistrates of CANNON in 1836, shows that in 1837 the following persons:

Lamuel Moore, Chairman (was Lemuel an attorney?)
Reuben Evans
Martin Phillips
John Martin
Joel Cheatham
Jonathan Fuston
John Frazer
Peter Reynolds and
James Batey

were all among the new megistates of members of the county court of DeKalb County. This is probably explained by the fact that these men were living in that part of CANNON that was transferred to DEKALB in 1837 & therefore were, by the establishment ??f the new county transferred into it by the Act that oreated DeKalb. Check of many other early Tennessee Counties show up similar peouliarities. But these do not mean that Mr.LEMUEL MOORE and REUBEN EVANS, for instances, were vassilating around over the country making it their business to serve as "Justice" of every new county that came into existence; nor does it mean that there were two or three men of the same name. They were the same men,-it was just the constant change of county lines that were taking place in old Tennessee, as it began to fill up towards the West.

In May, 1836, Thomas Powell. Isaac Finley, Allen Haley, Joseph Simpson, Blake
Sedgly, James L. Essary, John Pendleton, Isaac W. Eledge, Elijah Stephens,
I.M. Brown, F.L. Turner, John Milton, Charles C. Evans, Samuel Lance, Wm.
Bates, Wm. B. Foster, John Martin, John Frazier, Martin Phillips, Reuben
Evans, Lemuel Moore, James Goodwin, Peter Reynolds, James Beatie, Joel
Cheatham and Jonathan Fuson, all bearing commissions as justices, met at the
house of Henry d. McBroom, which was the old hotel, in Woodbury, for the
purpose of organizing the county court. The body was called to order by
Leighton Ferrell, sheriff of Warren County, and the oath of office was
administered by Eli Bailey, acting justice for Warren County.

WHAT OTHER CHILDREN DID THEY HAVE?????????????

I think Lemuel was in Giles Co TN in 1830 (page 41). A Lemuel H. Moore is indexed there but I can't find him on the images, they are very difficult to read and sections are totally unreadable even on the hard copies. In 1817 Giles Co was split to create Lawrence Co and that is where John Smallwood (married to Francis Smith) died in 1821. In 1830 Francis is living in Clay Co KY. In 1840 Lemuel is in Laurel Co KY. In 1840 it looks like Francis is living with her son Elijah in Clay Co KY. Also in Giles Co TN in 1830 is William Moore, page 40/214, Ezekiel Moore, page 39, Patrick (looks more like Japthah) Moore, page 38/193, George B. Moore, page 38, Benjamin Moore, page 38, Thomas Moore (36/170). These may be relatives of Lemuel. In 1820 There is a William Moore in Clay Co KY. A William Moore, age 78, filed a military pension claim in 1823 in Rockcastle Co KY. He was living in Rockcastle Co KY in 1820 (males: 0 2 0 2 0 1, females: 1 1 0 0 1). Lemuel Moore does not show up in TN after 1830 so I assume he moved to KY between 1830 and 1840.

There were two Jesse Moores who died in Laurel Co KY - one died in 1858 and one died 1859.
the one who died 1858 was married to Margaret Pearl - the one who died 1859 was married to Margaret Ann Cathers. Not sure which one was the one who helped to form Laurel Co in 1826 but it was probably the other Jesse because John Pearl was also involved and the other Jesse married a Pearl.
