Goodspeeds' Hsitory of Greene Co TN:
Among the other early settlers of the county were James English, on the headwaters of Lick Creek; Joseph Hardin, on the Roaring Fork of Lick Creek; George, William and Henry Conway, at the mouth of Lick Creek; Amos Bird, on the Chucky River; Alexander Galbraith, on Sinking Creek; James Delaney, on Holley Creek; Lewis Brayles, on Horse Creek; James Houston, in what is known as the Cove; Lanty Armstrong, on the sight of Rheatown; Robert Carr and Robert Hood, on the sight of Greeneville; James Patterson, who had four sons -- James, Andrew, Nathaniel and William -- located on Lick Creek in 1783. The Moores, Rankins and David Rice also settled in the same vicinity. A station was erected by the Carters about eight miles northwest of Greeneville. Tephaniah [sic]Woolsey lived south of the river.

NOTE: The Wm Rankin mentioned below may be the brother of Margaret Rankin:
After four years of labor, soliciting donations for the college, Mr. Coffin returned in 1805, and reported that he had secured about $14,000, of which $8,855.96 came from the "other side of the mountains." These funds placed the college upon a firmer foundation, and it at once entered upon a prosperous career. In 1810 Mr. Balch died, and was succeeded by Mr. Coffin, who continued at the head of the institution until 1827, when he accepted the presidency of East Tennessee College. His successor was Henry Hoss, for a short time as president pro tem., and in 1838 Rev. James McLin succeeded him. It was then decided to remove to Greeneville, and a committee was appointed to superintend the erection of a building at that place. This building was completed in 1841 upon a lot in the northeast part of town, donated by Valentine Sevier. From some cause, however, the college failed to prosper, and after three or four changes in presidents, among whom were Samuel Matthews, Charles A. Van Vleck, and J. J. Fleming, the college was suspended. In 1854 Rev. William B. Rankin, then principal of Rhea Academy, was elected, and so continued until the suspension of the schools by the war.

My ancestor is Jeremiah MOORE who lived in Spartanburg Co. near Woodruff on
the Enoree River. Jermiah's parents were Thomas and Rosannah FOWLER MOORE of Laurens Co. also on the Enoree River just a couple miles down stream.

Jeremiah purchased this property in 1786 from Robert SIMS. At the time he
purchased the property, he must have already been married as his oldest
daughter was born in 1785. Witness to the transaction were Thomas MOORE,
Thomas GUNTER and Joseph LYON. When he sold it in 1801 to William STONE (his
brother's father in law) there was no renouncing of dower, so I figure that
his wife may have died. ( I say this because in the census of 1800, he has
several females in his household, none of whom seem to be old enough to have
had a child born as early as 1785. Later records confirm that his wife,
indeed, was at least 10 years younger than him, he being born about 1765, she
about 1775. ) Witnesses to the sale of the property were Daniel McKEE and
Anderson PAGE.

Now, my question is who was Jeremiah MOORE's wife? The younger woman to whom he was married in later years name was Susannah? Could his first wife had
been related to one of the persons who witnessed the deed to his property? Or
could she have been related to one of the others named in these two
transactions/

One of the most unique characters that I can now recall was Alexander MOORE, who was owner of one of the country taverns heretofore referred to, located about nine miles from Cumberland Gap. During the winter season when the roads were at their worst a man from Tennessee was on his way to Barbourville with a wagon load of flour, and in a deep, ugly mudhole near this tavern his wagon was so badly stalled that his team could not pull it out. Mr. Moore, seeing his dilemma, came to his assistance with a team of his own horses and thus enabled him to get his wagon out on terra firma, after which the man was about to drive away, when Mr. Moore said: "My friend, haven't you forgotten something?" In reply to this the man indicated that he did not think he was leaving anything, and thereupon Mr. Moore said: "Well, sir, I'll give you to understand that in this country thank you is worth fifty cents and thank you kindly is worth one dollar." The man apologized as best he could for his seeming lack of appreciation of the kindness shown him, and resumed his journey. Two days thereafter he was on his return trip when night overtook him near Mr. Moore's tavern, where he secured accommodation for the night. The next morning he asked Mr. Moore what he owed him, to which Mr. Moore replied, "One dollar." The man with a merry twinkle in his eye said: "I thank you kindly." Replying, Mr. Moore said: "All right, my friend, that's a good one on me. You are entirely welcome to what you have had, and when passing I hope you will stop again on the same terms."

Alex Moore was a slave owner, 13 slaves, 1859.

On Aug. 25, 1825, Stephen Pruitt bought 200 acres on Lynn Camp
Creek, Knox Co., Ky., two poplars and a black oak from Jesse and
Amelia Moore in consid. of $90; Rec. Sept 18, 1826 (Knox Co.,
Ky. Bk C, p. 485)

Stephen and Naomy Pruet sold the 200 acres on Lynn Camp Creek,
two poplars and a black gum to John Weaver of Laurel Co., Ky. in
consid. of $90; Rec. Sept 28, 1826 (Knox Co., Ky. Bk C, p. 485)

In 1826, Stephen Pruett moved to Parke Co., Indiana. "Jesse and
Amelia Moore, both of S.C. came to Indiana in a very early day
of 1826, and sought a home in Jackson Township. Three families:
Jesse & Amelia Moore; Naomi Pruett and husband, with two
children; Thomas Moore and wife, and one child, Joab, single;
Jesse and son, Joab, 1/2 the land; Thomas & Stephen the other
half. Thomas now is the wealthiest man in Jackson Township"

Jemima married second: Thomas Moore in Knox Co., Ky. on May 1, 1823. They
were married by william Hopper.
According to the History of Parke and Vigo Co., Inc., p. 373, Thomas
Moore and wife, and one child, moved to Parke Co., Ind. in 1826.
Jemima died in Parke Co., Ind. on Dec. 18, 1844, and was buried in Moore
Cemetery.
