John STRICKLAND

Notes

13. Sophia Ann STRICKLAND

Birth: 1858 in Missouri. SOURCE: 1880 census (below) and (age 32 on 11Aug 1890 in the Widows Declaration for Pension)
Correct spelling is Strickland (her Mother, Melvina Strickland, testifiedto that fact on an affidavite for Emma Jane's Minor Pension from herfather, also Casey is Cacy.) I have not found Cacy anywhere.`

1878-Sophia Stricklen md William Casey 6 Jan 1878, Holt co. MO by GeorgeWeber, J.P. SOURCE: EA has mrg certificate, given to me by Frankie Sue(Rider) Rogers, I think. Also in Declaration for Widows Pension.

1880 Census--Lewis twp, Holt Co. MO. Married once, keeping house, cannotread or write, Mother born in Tennessee. Microfilm # 1254690

1883 Jan 16- had a daughter named Emma Jane, by William Cacey. SOURCE-The year is from Emma's obituary. The exact date is from WidowsDeclaration for Pension. the Father's name is from Oregon, Holt co.Probate Office that named Sophia Ann Walker (Mother of said minor) asGuardian to Emma Jane Cacey, aged 8 years & daughter of William Cacy, deceased. Also from actual Pension papers.

1885 - #5200738, original Pension Application to the War Dept, Adj. Gen.Office. Refused. Finally, in 1893, after more than 20 sworn affidavits, she received her first payment.

1889-had a daughter named Maud born to her and John B. WALKER. I amassuming this all took place in or around Forest City, Holt co. MO, asthey are buried there. SOURCE: "Gone Home; a Directory of the Deceased1837 - 1981 by Eileen Derr. ( a fantastic book). I quote: "Maud - Apr.30, 1889 - Apr. 10, 1949 - Dau. of John & Sophia STRICKLAND Walker.Forbes". (a town in Holt co. MO).

1891-Mother, Sophia WALKER, named Guardian. This took place 7 August 1891at Oregon, Holt co. MO. Sophia signed with her mark (X).

1893 - Notice of Issue by the Department of the Interior, Bureau ofPensions, Certificate # 367065, Appointed 17 March 1893, for Origpension, payable by the Pension Agent at Topeka, Kansas $8 plus $2 permonth add'l for child, retroactive from 15 Aug 1890, to Sophia AnnWalker, Oregon, MO. $296.33.
1893 - 10 April, Sophia signed with her mark, Sophia A. Walker an X,witnessed by her attorney, Clarke Irvine and her husband, John B Walker,a voucher proclaiming to be the guardian of Emma J, child of WilliamCacy, CO. E 32 MO Vol Inft, deceased, and received $296.33 for " 29months' and 19 days' pension due me on pension certificate # 367065, fromthe 15 day of Aug 1890, to the 4 day of Feby, 1893, for which I havesigned duplicate receipts." EA has.

1893 - The next Probate notice that I (EA) copied at Oregon, MO, is alsodated April 10, 1893 on a Monday morning at 9 o'clock AND IT STATES:The Estate of Emma J. Cacey, minor, orderd into the hands of PublicGuardian, aged 12 years (a mistake) she is a resident of Holt Co. and hasNO GUARDIAN OR CURATOR. so Giles A. Laughlin a Public Guardian of HoltCo. is to take charge of the $296.33 now due her. Then on---
12 June 1893 - The Probate Judge and the Sheriff "Ordered that the sumof $150 be appropriated to John Walker, out of the Estate of Emma J.Cacey, minor, for support, maintenance and clothing of said minor."Each year after that, John B. Walker, her Stepfather, received around$100 for her support. And there is no mention of her Mother, Sophia, again until her death is recorded as----

1899 - Sophia Ann STRICKLAND died Mar 1, 1899 aged about 41y leaving herhusband, John, and five small children. (HCMP) SOURCE: "Gone Home" byEileen Derr.

On the same page and just below Sophia's death record, is a Nancy JaneSTRICKLAND, born Salem, Nebr. Nov 28, 1859 - Sept. 14, 1927 - dau of Seth& MELVINA STRICKLAND. Nancy was 2nd wife of Harrison Walker. Lived inForest City. I am very interested in this because altho my Grandma Vina, daughter of Emma Jane, never used the Mel part, she always said her namewas MELVINA. Sophia was born about 1858, so they could easily besisters and married to brothers. (above proven 11 Mar 1997 in Pensionpapers. Melvina swore that she was the Grandmother to Emma Jane, daughterof Sophia.) EA has complete file.

1900 - 12 March, Final Settlement signed by Emma J. Phillips and herhusband James T. Phillips in Weston co. Wyoming. We have always had himas James Leonard !! Will have to check somehow on that, He signed theT. himself.

William Cacy CASEY

Birth- 1838 or 39 in Missouri Territory. SOURCE: 1880 Census.

1860 - E-Mail Internet Researcher could NOT find a William Casey in HoltCo. Census. I did NOT find him in 1860 Richardson Co., NE. I shouldcheck them closer.

1862 - Civil War: Pension # 5200738. Pvt. Co. H 32 Regiment, MOVolunteers, enrolled 14 Aug 1862 at Rolla, MO for 3 yrs. On Muster Rollsfrom 20 Oct 1862 to 30 June 1863. Detached to Mounted Infantry for July& Aug 1863.
31 Aug 1863 to 31 Oct 1864 in Co. E Consolidated Battlion 31st and 32ndMO Infantry Vol, 30 April 1865 Co changed to E 32nd MO Vols. Musteredout 18 July 1865 at Louisville, KY.

1878 - EA has marriage certificate for William Casey and SophiaStricklen, 6 Jan 1878, Holt co. MO. Received from Sue Rogers.
Mother-in-law, Melvina Strickland said in Guardianship papers the "Truespelling was Cacy and Strickland, not Casey and Stricklen as stated onmrg certificate."

1880 Census- Lewis Twp, Holt Co., MO. Film # 1254690. He was a Laborer, living amongst all Farmers so I think they were living and working onsomeone's Farm. They were both born in MO and didn't know where hisparents were born! Wife's Mother born in TN. Neither he nor Sophiacould read or write. Film

1885, 14 June -Died at Holt County Poor Farm. Looks like he was about20 years older than Sophia and had been very sick from the War years upto his death in 1885. He had applied for a Pension # 520738 which wasrefused because the Regimental Hospital records, 32 MO Vols, and 31 and32 Consolidated Battn MO Vols. were not on file at the Adjutant General'sOffice at the War Dept.

Pension Certificate # 367065 for Sophia A. Walker and dau Emma Jane Caceyon file in the Pension Office at Topeka, Kansas. Received 11 March 1997from Natn'l Archives. (Ordered 11-96)
