30. Simon SHAFER

WAR: Civil War Veteran, Maxine's "Shafer Family in Dunn County", saysthat
Simon was drafted into the Calvary in Nov 1863 from Dunn co. WI, and was
mustered out in July 1865. He lived with
his brother Andrew and Joanna in 1860 in Dunn co. Andrew was a laborerwith a
worth of $200. Single Simon was a farmer and worth more - $300.
After the war Simon settled in the town of Weston and owned a 120 acrefarm.
He alone retained the original spelling of the Shaffer family name,keeping the
second "f". Simon stayed single and died young at the age of 61 in 1894.
Andrew and Joanna took over Simon's farm & then passed the land on totheir
son, Alvin.
Simon and brother William, who died in 1856 at the young age of 25, sharea
tombstone marker in the Shaffer Family cemetery.
