2 CONT Last Friday afternnon at 4:40 o'clock, Grandpa Allen died at the home ofhis son, M W Allen, i
2 CONC n South Meridian.  He had suffered with a bad attackof the grippe, for several days past, an
2 CONC d hsi death was hastened by afall which he sustained the early part of the week.  While his d
2 CONC emise wasnot unexpected,
2 CONT it comes as a sad shock to the community in which he had made his homefor the past nine years
2 CONC .

2 CONT William Allen was born in Knox County, Ohio on January 6, 1828, and wasmarried to Charlotte S
2 CONC ams of Perry County, Ohio in 1850.  The next yearthey removed to Clinton Co., Iowa and in 187
2 CONC 2 moved again, settling inNorth Central Kansas.  Some few years afterwards, he went still fur
2 CONC therWest, living for a time in Wyoming, later purchasing a fruit farm nearMontrose, Colorado
2 CONC , where they remained until 1908, when they came toMeridian to spend the last years of thei
2 CONC r lives near their son, Miles W.Allen.
2 CONT  William and Charlotte Allen were the parents of seven children, six ofwhom are still living
2 CONC .  Mrs. Allen died on the 7th day of February, 1908,four years and two days prior to the deat
2 CONC h of her husband,and was buriedin the cemetery on the Allen farm south of town.

2 CONT Mr. Allen was a member of Co. A, 16th Iowa Infantry, and served throughthe war.  He was a mem
2 CONC ber of the Congregational Church, and was a devoutChristian.

2 CONT Funeral Services were conducted by Rev. Parker of Guthrie, Saturdayafternoon at the residence
2 CONC , and he was laid to rest by the side of hiswife.  F M Allen, his youngest brother who live
2 CONC s near Sumner in NobleCounty, Oklahoma, was the only out-of-town relative in attendance.

2 CONT In the early ‘40s, Junior drove a team pulling a sled with a wood stovein the back as a schoo
2 CONC l bus. Upon leaving the ranch, he worked for theU.S. Forest Service at Hardy Ranger Station n
2 CONC ear O’Neil Pass in SouthDakota.  He and his brother Ervin had a Sawmill on Stockade Beaver Cr
2 CONC eekin Weston County, WY. He later drove the Stockade Beaver Creek Highschool bus to Newcastle
2 CONC .  He then worked for Jack Graham Service Stationand carried mail along the Morrisey route
2 CONC .  Bertha and Junior moved toSpearfish in 1960 where he became known as Ross.  He worked fo
2 CONC r the U.S.Forest Service again and retired from there in 1981.

2 CONT He was a great family man and dearly loved hunting and fishing with otherfamily members.

2 CONT In 1810 census Abraham and Sarah are in Green county, Pennsylvania. Theyhave 3 children
2 CONT age 10 and under. I have not done this census myself, but this is foundin a letter from
2 CONT David SAMS. (David Sams is considered THE foremost researcher on thisline of the Sams
2 CONT family. There are other branches out there that may have incorrect info.)

2 CONT By 1818 they have moved to Richland county, Ohio. Here Abraham Samssigned a release of

2 CONT transaction. Abraham and Charlotte are never to be seen again after thisRichland county
2 CONT land deal.

2 CONT Concerning the disappearance of Abraham and Charlotte and quoting fromAS# ___, David Sams

2 CONT "It may be useful to speculate on why they sold their property and wherethey went. It
2 CONT seems likely that if they needed money to live on they would have soldone lot at a time.
2 CONT This sale implies to me that they either sold the land they lived on andwent somewhere
2 CONT else or that they lived somewhere else and this was investment property.
2 CONT "Now where else might they have lived? I have the record of Abraham Samespurchasing Lot
2 CONT #3 in Woodberry on April 18, 1831, but no record of him selling it. If hewas our Abraham
2 CONT he may have remained on that property. Woodberry is in the area thatbecame Morrow county
2 CONT in 1848. If Abraham remained, the record of his disposal of this propertymay be in the
2 CONT Morrow county records. Other investment records or will records couldalso exist. We
2 CONT really meed to locate a record of the disposal of his property whichnames his children if
2 CONT we are to ever prove Henry C. (1809) was his son.
2 CONT "There is the possibility that he sold his property in 1845 and moved
2 CONT somewhere else probably joining some of his children. I can not prove thenames of any of
2 CONT his children. There is likely an area somewhere where several
2 CONT of his children moved such as the NE Indiana area for the children ofAndrew and Henry,
2 CONT Jr. (1846).
2 CONT "We should note that when Abraham sold the 8 lots in 1845, Isaac Sams wasa witness. We
2 CONT know that Henry, Jr. (1846) had a son, Isaac, who could not be located in1846. Is this
2 CONT the same Isaac or did Abraham also have a son Isaac? I suspect there were2 of them.
2 CONT Which, then, is the Isaac with our Henry and the Abraham who resided inJackson county,
2 CONT Ohio, in 1850? It is clear as mud but gradual clues emerge. I do not havea marriage
2 CONT record for either Isaac.  Samms and Sames are possible alternativespellings for all
2 CONT records at this point.

2 CONC owa near Sheridan.When he was a young man, he cut cord wood and floated it down the OhioRive
2 CONC r to sell. In the spring of 1858, he heard of the gold rush at PikesPeak Colorado. He and a f
2 CONC riend started west with a wagon train. He was anexcellent rifle shot, so he was hired to kil
2 CONC l the meat for the wagontrain. Enroute he saw herds of buffalo and in Colorado saw one number
2 CONC ing3 to 4 thousand animals. The wagon train waited 3 or 4 days for for theherd to pass. The
2 CONC y were concererened that the buffalo would stampede andrun over the wagons. About this tim
2 CONC e 4 men left the wagon trains to gohunting. The scouts warned them not to go because of the d
2 CONC anger ofIndians. They left and were never heard from again. When the wagon trainreached Wyomi
2 CONC ng and antelope country, Grandfather NATHAN, would hide in aclump of sagebrush and put a whit
2 CONC e flag on the end of a stick with whichhe cleaned his gun his wipin stick) and put it up in t
2 CONC he air. When thecurious antelope approached, he was able to take fresh meat back to camp.On
2 CONC e time they had some strange tasting meat for supper. NATHAN ask if itwas bear, rabbit, dee
2 CONC r or elk and they told him no, it's beaver. NATHANarrived on Couse Creek, Umatilla Co. Orego
2 CONC n in the spring of 1861. In thewinter of 1861-1862 he worked for MCCOY and STETSON. It wa
2 CONC s a bad snowywinter and about a thousand cattle died as the farmers could'nt get feedto them
2 CONC . He cut cord wood for fifty cents a cord. One day he hauled aload of oats to sell to the For
2 CONC t in Walla Walla, Washington and returnedwith the news that PRESIDENT LINCOLN had been assass
2 CONC inated. In the springof 1863, NATHAN and DAVE MCCONNELL started a freight route from Umatilla
2 CONC Landing to Idaho City (now Boise) with an ox team. They took barley,oats, and wheat to the mi
2 CONC nes in Idaho City. They also freighted down tosouthern Oregon. He was never bothered by India
2 CONC ns or robbed as he hid hismoney in the single tree of the wagon. After freighting for 4 years
2 CONC , hebought a herd of cattle which he herded behind Squaw Creek Bute in AdaCounty, Idaho. Afte
2 CONC r 4 years he again sold the cattle for $16,000. ingold dust. He brought the gold dust in a bu
2 CONC ckskin bag back to Couse Creekon horseback from Idaho over the Nez Perce Trail through the Bl
2 CONC ueMountains near Milton, Oregon. He then bought land on Couse Creek southof Milton, Oregon. H
2 CONC e was a wealthy farmer. In 1875, NATHAN and hisbrother BERT rode horseback to Ogden, Utah t
2 CONC o meet their father, PETERSAMS, who had come on the train from Iowa to Ogdon, which was as fa
2 CONC r asthe railroad was built then. They bought a Lynchpin Wagon, and a set ofharness in Ogden a
2 CONC nd came back that way. When NATHAN came to Couse Creek, the road up the creek was an Indian t
2 CONC rail along the hill. The Indianscame up Couse Creek every spring to camp and dig the yellow f
2 CONC loweredplant which grows in abundance on the hillsides. The Indians called itKrause and the s
2 CONC mall bulb of the plant is edible. The Indians dug it andpounded it into cakes. The cakes wer
2 CONC e then sundried and stored for thewinter. The white settlers called the creek Couse Creek. NA
2 CONC THAN'Sbrother, JACOB, came to his farm with his wife MELISSA CLEMENTINE(WILLIAMSON), and thei

2 CONC thing about Elizabeth except that she was bornin Ohio about 1818. Her parents do not seem t
2 CONC o appear on the Richland Co.Ohio census.
2 CONT The Sams family, however is easier to study. Several families of Samesmoved from Pennsylvani
2 CONC a to Richland Co. Ohio by 1820. Henry Sams was a"Fence Viewer" in Perry Twp. of Richland Co
2 CONC . Ohio in 1816. He boughtproperty the same year. Some evidence indicates all the Sams familie
2 CONC s didnot come together. Henry may have arrived before Richland Co. split fromKnox Co. about 1
2 CONC 814. His son Andrew may have fought in the War of 1812from Knox Co.
2 CONT At any rate, when Henry Sams bought property in 1816, he was Henry Jr.The deed, however, wa
2 CONC s recorded only as "Henry Sams" and thus the landbelonged legally to his father. Soon after h
2 CONC e bought the quarter section.He sold 1/2 of it to his father, but neglected to have the dee
2 CONC d recorded.In 1818 his father died. The records left in straightning that out thismess are o
2 CONC f great help to us studying the family. They show that HenrySr. left 8 heirs.
