and I got to go to Illinois and Indiana for a get-away and to 2 CONT do a little more research on our Illinois/Indiana lines. It was a great 2 CONT experience and we found several new good items. 2 CONT 2 CONT First, I got real lucky in Clark County, IL. We were actually researching my 2 CONT Spivey lines, but several Rubottoms also moved into Clark County (just a 2 CONT county west of Terre Haute, Vigo, IN). Clark County has a wonderful 2 CONT Genealogical Society with a library right across the street from the 2 CONT courthouse. They are not open very many hours, but the collection is 2 CONT marvelous. While there, I checked the will/estate listings for Spiveys and 2 CONT Rubottom. There was an estate listing for Samuel D. Rubottom. I wasn't sure 2 CONT which Samuel this was until I got to the actual estate listings. The estate 2 CONT was in a narrow envelope that had gotten pushed down in the drawer until it 2 CONT was under all the others. (Persistence pays off!) I took all the envelopes 2 CONT out of the drawer so I could reach it. It was the will of Samuel D. 2 CONT Rubottom, the son of Simon and Elizabeth Dunn Rubottom. This was pretty 2 CONT exciting since we have up to this time not been able to confirm his children. 2 CONT 2 CONT I don't know if there are any Samuel Rubottom descendants out there who are 2 CONT actively researching this line. Perhaps Missouri was notthe original destination of t 2 CONC he group.Ezekiel Rubottom was listed as head of household in the 1800 Census.The enumera to 2 CONC r for the 1800 census spelled his name E z e k e l R hu b o t t o m. 2 CONT 2 CONT Ezekiel Rubottom was born in either Chatham or Moore County, North Carolina. He appears to ha 2 CONC ve married and purchased land in Moore County, NC. He appears to have left NC between 1802 an 2 CONC d 1806. In 1806 he was listed on a Williamson County tax list, but did not appear to own land 2 CONC . He probably migrated to Missouri that same year. 2 CONT Note: 2 CONT On page 283 of Goodspeed's History of Southeast Missouri (1888), it says, "In 1806, Elijah, R 2 CONC ansom, and Overton Bettis, brothers, and their brothers-in-law, Ezekiel Rubottom, Elijah Math 2 CONC ews and ______ Alston, came from North Carolina. Elijah Bettis located where Mrs. White now l 2 CONC ives, and Overton Bettis near the site of Wellsdale. Ransom Bettis, in 1811, married Polly Ke 2 CONC lly, and lived where John F. Rhodes now does. Overton Bettis was a bachelor. All were men o 2 CONC f considerable property, and owned slaves. . . This settlement was far from any trading point 2 CONC , and did not grow very rapidly. Up to 1818 the territory now known as Wayne County formed St 2 CONC . Like his brother Simon Rubottom, Ezekiel was a black 2 CONC smith and gunsmith by trade. It is likely that their father Thomas Rubottom worked in this sa 2 CONC me occupation and taught his sons the trade. In 1853, he left IN with his team 2 CONC s driving stock to go to Iowa. Levi and Louisa came from West Union MM, Morgan County, IN. Hi 2 CONC s parents, his sister Jane, brothers Simon Dunn and Farlow and 2 CONT Farlow's two daughers, Ruth and Catherine also went with them to Ackworth, Warren County, IA 2 CONC . In 1865, Levi moved his family to Hardin County, IA. 2 CONT Note: Obituary of Levi Rubottom: Levi Rubottom was born in White Lick, Morgan County, Ind., O 2 CONC ct. 2, 1826 and died at the home of his son, Charles, in Providence Twp., Iowa, May 18, 190 2 CONC 9 aged 82 years 7 mo. and 16 days. 2 CONT Note: 2 CONT Her was one of the pioneers of this country, coming to this state on foot in 1850 and 2 CONT returning to Indiana in the same year. In 1852 he married Louisa Amanda Thompson, a sister o 2 CONC f J. D. Thomspon of Honey Creek community. Ten children were born to them, Viola, Rudolfo, Lu 2 CONC dovic, Thompson, Alwilda, Charles, Ines Elva, Ulysses, Florence 2 CONT Ann and Vinton, seven of whom are still living. In the year of 1857, they moved to Iowa and s 2 CONC ettled in Warren County, living there until 1866 when they moved to Hardin County and settle 2 CONC d on a farm near Chester. February 15, 1880 his wife Louisa 2 CONT passed away. March 1882 he was married to Jennie Hammer who still survives him. In 1886 the 2 CONC y moved to Alliance, Nebraska, where he resided until 1904 when he returned to Iowa and has s 2 CONC ince made his home with his son. He was converted in early life 2 CONT and has lived a consistent Christian life during all these years. 2 CONT Note: Funeral services, conducted by Reverend Doane of New Providence, assisted by Reverend B 2 CONC owles of Honey Creek were held at the Honey Creek church Wednesday at 2:30 and interment wa 2 CONC s at Honey Creek Cemetery. 2 CONT Note: A large number of his old neighbors and friends attended the funeral service in evidenc 2 CONC e of the love and esteen they bore the deceased. 2 CONT Note: 2 CONT Rev. On page 1144 is found the following: 2 CONT 2 CONT "Lafayette Rubottom, one of the pioneer families of Wayne County, Mo., was born on the farm w 2 CONC here he now lives on November 1, 1824. His parents were Ezekiel and Parmelia (Parish) Rubotto 2 CONC m, and his grandfather was Simon Rubottom. The latter was born in Wales, and came with his un 2 CONC cle to the United States, and died in North Carolina. 2 CONT 2 CONT He was a surgeon in the Revolutionary War. Joseph Parish, father of Mrs. Rubottom, was born n 2 CONC ear Richmond, Va., and served seven years in the Revolutionary War. He was in all the princip 2 CONC al battles that were fought under Gen. Green, and was at the siege of Yorktown. He lived to b 2 CONC e eighty-six years of age, and his wife to be eighty-seven. 2 CONT 2 CONT Ezekiel Rubottom came to Missouri in 1806, and a year later located in Wayne County, where h 2 CONC e entered eighty acres of land. He was one of the very earliest settlers, and in 1822 was ele 2 CONC cted to the Legislature and served two terms. He held the offices of county judge, country tr 2 CONC easurer, and justice of the peace for many years, and had unbounded influence in the county 2 CONC . He was a member of the Baptist Church, and a Mason, and died in 1856 at the age of eighty-s 2 CONC ix years. His wife died in 1844, during the cholera epidemic. They were the parents of twelv 2 CONC e children, eight of whom grew to maturity, but only three of whom are now living: Lafayette 2 CONC , Thomas P., and Simon T. The father was born in Chatham Coun 2 CONC ty, N.C., in 1770, and was married first in North Carolina to Miss Bettie, daughter of Dr. Be 2 CONC ttis, a survivor of the Revolutionary War. Mr. Rubottom brought his family to Tennessee in 18 2 CONC 03, and he was married the second time in 1810 to the mother of Dr. S. N. He was a gunsmith a 2 CONC nd blacksmith by trade and worked some for the Indians. He died in 1857. He was once or twic 2 CONC e a member of the Legislature, when it convened at St. Charles. He was also for several year 2 CONC s county judge and justice of the peace, etc. He was a life-long Democrat, and a man of consi 2 CONC derable influence. His father was a native of Wales, and a soldier in the Revolutionary Way 2 CONC . Mrs. Amelia Rubottom was born in Richmond, VA, and was the daughter of John Parish. She die 2 CONC d in 1844. Dr. S. N. Rubottom was the seventh of eight children. He attended the common schoo 2 CONC ls in Missouri, and from the age of fourteen to twenty lived with Dr. V. M. Capp, a brother-i 2 CONC n-law. Subsequently he began the study of medicine, and took one course at the St. Louis Medi 2 CONC cal College. In 1861 he began practicing at Greeneville, and has continued practicing ever si 2 CONC nce with success. He was married in 1859 to Miss Eliza, daughter of John and Elsie Wisecarver 2 CONC , and a native of Cape Girardeau County. Her people were early settlers of Butler County. T 2 CONC o this union were born seven children. In 1866 the Doctor settled on his present farm, whic 2 CONC h consists of 120 acres on Cane Creek, sixteen miles northwest of Poplar Bluff.
