There are no records ofJohan Nichol Peckoner SR, that can be found after his entrance to Am 2 CONC ericaat Philadelphia in 1740 except his short existence in Clear Springs,Maryland where his b 2 CONC rother or cousin George Braggoonner lived. Howeverthere are other records in Maryland that co 2 CONC ntinue the Peckoner lineage. There are some genealogists (Brenda & Barbara Beckner) who thin 2 CONC k JohanNichol Peckoner Sr. may be John Nicholas Beckner who with his family wentto New Jerse 2 CONC y after arriving in America. There are several records inMiddlesex County, NJ where a John N 2 CONC icholas Sr & Jr lived. One marriagerecord for that county lists John Brackner to Charity Ste 2 CONC phenson. 2 CONT 2 CONT For example, Brumbaugh's Maryland Records - TRUE LIST OF ALL THE SOULS... Census takers never could spel 2 CONC l very well. 2 CONT 2 CONT However, Jacob (twin) Prakunier and his descendants went on to spelltheir name Bragunier, whi 2 CONC le their brother Henry (twin) Prakunier and hisdescendants went on to spell their name Brocku 2 CONC nier. 2 CONT 2 CONT Since the Procuniers were German speaking and couldn't spell or pronouncetheir name in Englis 2 CONC h when they came to America, they were therefore atthe mercy of recorders or Census takers t 2 CONC o set their spelling in motion. However, when some of the family became more literate in late 2 CONC r years theychanged their last name to its original state of Procunier. 2 CONT 2 CONT The only records that we have showing that Johan Nichol Peckoner SR wasthe father of Peter Br 2 CONC ockunier SR, is the Bragunier Genealogy in Americaby Brittian Bragunier Robinson 1969 page 5 2 CONC 7 and page 58. Asa hobby I have been doing some research on the Procunier Gene 2 CONC alogy. Mysubject is "The Procunier Connection with the Huguenots". In it I willtrace what w 2 CONC e know of the Procunier's from France through fourgenerations to Adam Procunier who married D 2 CONC esire Neal. My references arefour, three of them are books and the fourth is family history h 2 CONC andeddown from parent to child. Two of them are books about the Huguenots. Thefirst is The Da 2 CONC ys of the Upright by OIA Roche, an American Historian. Thebook was published in 1965. The sec 2 CONC ond book is The Trail of the Huguenotsby Dr. G E Reamon. Dr. Reamon was a professor of Englis 2 CONC h at OAC, Gueeph, his book was published in 1963. The next book is The Procunier Family inAmer 2 CONC ica by Britain Bragunier Robinson. Robinson is an American Procunierdescendant who has done h 2 CONC is research for the book in France and in theU.S. 2 CONT 2 CONT A word about references. Two independent publisher references that agree, are much more author 2 CONC itative than one! Other good sources of historicalinformation are gravestones, national censu 2 CONC ses, church records and ship'slist of passengers. 2 CONT 2 CONT Before exploring the Procuniar Connection to the Huguenots, let us try tounderstand some of t 2 CONC he highlights about the Huguenots. The word isspelled "HUGUENOT". It is believed to be derive 2 CONC d from two Flernish words:Huis meaning home and Genooten meaning fellows. It referred to Prot 2 CONC estantBible students who met secretly in each others homes to study the bible. The bibles the 2 CONC y studied were a French version produced by John Calvin andhis followers in the 1550's in Gen 2 CONC eva Switzerland. Note that John Calvinwas a famous French Protestant of the 16th century. Muc 2 CONC h of the faith ofthe Scottish Presbyterian Church is based on the teachings of John Calvin. 2 CONT 2 CONT John Calvin grew up in the Province of Picards in northern France. He wasone of the earlies 2 CONC t Huguenots to be persecuted. He had to go toSwitzerland in order to carry on his work. 2 CONT 2 CONT Why were the Huguenots persecuted? Chiefly because they were critical ofthe Pope and severa 2 CONC l of the practices of the Roman Catholic Church, particularly that of easy forgiveness of seri 2 CONC ous crimes and thepurchasing of indulgences. Because of their outspoken criticism theHuguenot 2 CONC s were called heretic. 2 CONT 2 CONT Huguenots had a strong faith in Jesus Christ and in the life hereafter asdescribed in the Ne 2 CONC w Testament. This faith gave them great courage toendure persecution. Some were remarkably ch 2 CONC eerful under dreadfulconditions. Many were hard working, skillful, self-reliant professionals 2 CONC who ran their own businesses and made them prosper. Many of them hadexperience in making text 2 CONC iles, plus fine laces, others were good in metalworking, in manufacturing. Still others had e 2 CONC xperience in specializedagriculture. 2 CONT 2 CONT Faced with persecution. these Huguenots, or French Protestants joinedtogether to form the "Pr 2 CONC otestant Reform Church" in France. During most ofthe 275 year period from 1525 to 1800 the Hu 2 CONC guenots were persecuted. 2 CONT 2 CONT At that time the population of France was in the range of 12 to 13million and the Huguenot po 2 CONC pulation at its peak was only 1 1/4 million,i.e. 10% of this. For almost all of that time th 2 CONC e Huguenots were hatedintensely by the Catholic majority, and they were persecutedsystematica 2 CONC lly by the Catholic Church (especially the Jesuits), theFrench Army, and the French governmen 2 CONC t. Many Huguenots were massacred, many of their leaders were burned at the stake, some were to 2 CONC rtured, manymen died at sea as galley slaves. Part way through this period for abrief 12 year 2 CONC s following the Edict of Nantes of 1598, the Huguenots hadsome protection under the Protestan 2 CONC t French King, Henry the IV. Howevernear the end of his reign he became a Catholic. He was as 2 CONC sassinated in1610. From then on the persecution of the Huguenots continued. Towardsthe end o 2 CONC f the 1700's the persecution in France decreased. 2 CONT 2 CONT At various times during the persecution period edicts of laws were passedthat made it a crim 2 CONC e for Huguenots ... 2 CONT 2 CONT -to have a copy of John Calvin's French Bible in their homes. 2 CONT -to provide help to other Huguenots who were fleeing from theirpersecutors. 2 CONT -to worship in their own churches. 2 CONT -to sell their property and then emigrate with young children because theCatholics believed t 2 CONC hey could train Huguenot children who were under 16to become Catholics. 2 CONT 2 CONT As a result of these restrictions members of Huguenot families had todisappear secretly, on 2 CONC e or two at a time. Sometimes they changed theirnames. Catholics were continually seizing Hug 2 CONC uenot Property, with thearrangement that 1/3 of the seized property would go to informers an 2 CONC d therest went to the church or the state. 2 CONT 2 CONT All major ports (usual shipping routes) and border crossing points werepatrolled so that Hugu 2 CONC enots caught leaving with money or jewels, hadtheir goods seized and they were jailed. Ofte 2 CONC n then their children under16 were forcibly taken and put in Catholic Schools and the men wer 2 CONC e sentto galley ships. As a result many thousands of those who did leave Franceescaped with v 2 CONC ery little money or goods! 2 CONT 2 CONT After a while the neighboring Protestant countries of Britain, TheNetherlands, Germany and Sw 2 CONC itzerland , became crowded with pennilessrefugees and there was scant opportunity to make a l 2 CONC iving, after thatmany tried to go to America. During the 100 years, 1550 to 1650, many ofthos 2 CONC e who went to America perished, either due to shipwreck orstarvation, or massacre in Americ 2 CONC a by the Spanish, the French or theIndians! 2 CONT 2 CONT From approximately 1650 onward conditions for settling in the Britishpart of America improve 2 CONC d and it became known as the land of religiousfreedom and of economic opportunity. 2 CONT 2 CONT The regions of France where Huguenot populations were strongest were: 2 CONT 2 CONT The fortified City of La Rochelli in the Province of Saintonge in thesouth west. 2 CONT Province of Normandie in the north west. 2 CONT Province of Picardy (where John Calvin was born) in the north next toBelgium. 2 CONT Province of Alsace in the north east next to Germany and Switzerland 2 CONT 2 CONT John Calvin lived for several happy years in the city of Strasburg, theprinciple city of Alsa 2 CONC ce. He was married in Alsace. With this as abackground 2 CONT 2 CONT let us now turn to the Procunier's. 2 CONT 2 CONT One of the earliest Procunier's of which there is a record, is HenryProcunier. He was governo 2 CONC r of the city of Strasburg in the year 1235.There are records of other Procunier's either own 2 CONC ing land or renting landin various parts of France in the many years following Henry Procunie 2 CONC r'stime. 2 CONT 2 CONT Let us move on to John Nicholas Procunier [it was spelled Johan NicholPeckoner on the ship Ly 2 CONC dia's log 1740] who we believe was the firstProcunier to come to America! John Nicholas, earl 2 CONC y in the summer of 1740,at the age of 36, was living in Strasburg with his wife and three boy 2 CONC saged 15, 12 and 10. Our family history suggests John Nicholas may havebeen a tailor and defi 2 CONC nitely was a Huguenot. John made a careful plan toimmigrate to the British colony in America 2 CONC . In order to avoid attentionwhen crossing the border, John may have arranged for his wife an 2 CONC d twoyounger boys to leave Strasburg ahead of him. Also it is probable theywent to visit John 2 CONC 's younger brother George and his wife Anna who wereliving in Hanover, Germany. John and Joh 2 CONC n Jr. followed soon after. Theythen proceeded to Rotterdam and signed on, as passengers on th 2 CONC e shipLydia. Probably the mother and two younger boys came at the same timealthough the ship' 2 CONC s records did not show their names whereas it did showJohn Nicholas and his son John Nichola 2 CONC s Jr. 2 CONT 2 CONT Anyway, the ship arrived at Philadelphia early in September 1740 and onSeptember 28, 1740 Joh 2 CONC n Nicholas was qualified (registered) as animmigrant at the State House in Philadelphia. Soo 2 CONC n afterward the familysettled along with other German speaking Protestants in a communitycall 2 CONC ed "Clear Springs" near Hagerstown, Maryland. Records indicate thattheir church was called th 2 CONC e German Reformed Church of Hagerstown. LaterEva Procunier of Hanover Germany, and the daught 2 CONC er of George and AnnaProcunier, married Michael Bergman (a Lutheran) and came to live nearCle 2 CONC ar Springs too. Eva's gravestone states "She lived and died aLutheran". 2 CONT 2 CONT REV. Daniel Bragunier, a grandson of John Nicholas, was a distinguishedminister of the Reform 2 CONC ed Church in Hagerstown Maryland. He was called the"Original Old Mr. Huguenot" and was an imp 2 CONC ortant character in a bookwritten by Sr. Peter Davis entitled The Young Parson. This indicate 2 CONC s thatDaniel firmly believed his grandfather was a Huguenot. 2 CONT 2 CONT Family history, handed down from parents to their children, in bothAmerica and Canadian branc 2 CONC hes of Procunier's has traced back to theinitial French Huguenot, John Nicholas Peckoner (Pro 2 CONC cunier). All of uswho are his descendants have reason to be proud of these ancestors. 2 CONT 2 CONT Let us now trace this first family for three more generations. We do nothave much record of w 2 CONC hat happened to John Nicholas Jr. or the youngestbrother Henry. They do not appear to have ha 2 CONC d any descendants. The secondson Peter Sr. aged 12 in 1740 later became active in real estate 2 CONC . Hebought and sold lands extensively. By the time he was 32 Peter Sr. owneda choice 50 acr 2 CONC e farm called "Hager's Long Hickory". On this farm he andhis Dutch wife Margaret, spelled Mar 2 CONC gret in the census, brought up theirfamily of five boys and four girls and the family prosper 2 CONC ed. 2 CONT 2 CONT Then came the year 1776 and the American War of Independence! Peter Sr.was 49 in 1776 and hi 2 CONC s eldest daughter Margretha was 18. This son Peter, who I shall call second Peter, was 12. Pet 2 CONC er SR's youngest son Daniel wasborn in 1776. What were they to do? Should they renounce loyal 2 CONC ty toBritain and become Americans or should they remain loyal to Britain andbe persecuted? Du 2 CONC ring the next few years I am sure they saw and heard ofmany families who lost their farms an 2 CONC d were persecuted for staying loyalto Britain. Peter Sr. (who I shall call first Peter) decid 2 CONC ed to become anAmerican and thereby keep his farm and support his young family. PeterSr. too 2 CONC k the oath of Allegiance in 1778. 2 CONT 2 CONT On the other hand, a few years later, two of his married daughters andhis eldest son Peter Jr 2 CONC . went to Canada. Peter Jr. settled in Normandaltownship of Norfolk county, near Port Rowan 2 CONC . Peter Sr. did not approve ofhis son Peter JR's decision to go to Canada. To show his disapp 2 CONC rovalPeter Sr. only gave Peter Jr. 5 pounds and some canceled loans in hiswill of November 18 2 CONC , 1804. Most of Peter SR's estate was given to threeof the sons, David, Jacob, and Daniel Bro 2 CONC ckunier, that stayed at ClearSprings. Each of Peter SR's daughters received 40 pounds. 2 CONT 2 CONT Peter Jr. and his wife Elizabeth had four sons, named Henry, Peter, Adamand David. Their farm 2 CONC s were in the Port Rowan and St. William's area.Peter Jr. lived to be 83 and the gravestone f 2 CONC or him and his wifeElizabeth is in the Johnson Cemetery in St. Williams Canada. 2 CONT 2 CONT I believe that this first Procunier family in Canada, like many otherloyalists, had high idea 2 CONC ls, and were willing to suffer great hardships inorder to maintain their faiths, their tradit 2 CONC ions and their self-respect. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1817 Peter JR's son Adam, at the age of 19 married Desire Neal, aged18, the daughter of Ma 2 CONC jor George Neal, also spelled Neil, was a Loyalist, who had come to Canada in 1786. George Nea 2 CONC l was the Methodist ministerafter whom the church was named. Major Neal lived and served fo 2 CONC r manyyears in St. Williams. 2 CONT 2 CONT This ends my talk on the "Procunier connection with the Huguenots" andtheir Loyalist backgrou 2 CONC nd. 2 CONT 2 CONT Gordon Procunier 2 CONT 2 CONT *Comment by this author about Gordon's talk in 1981 ................ 2 CONT Though Gordon's talk at the 1981 Procunier picnic presented a fairlyaccurate picture of o 2 CONC ur ancestors, some points may not conform to thefacts. For example Gordon states that "Eva P 2 CONC rocunier of Hanover Germany, the daughter of George and Anna Procunier, married Michael Bergma 2 CONC nn (aLutheran) and came to live near Clear Springs, Maryland. Eva's gravestonestates She live 2 CONC d and died a Lutheran". 2 CONT Eve's gravestone is located in the St. Paul's Lutheran & ReformedChurch in Washington Cou 2 CONC nty, Maryland, which is located on Route #40,near Clear Springs, Maryland. On Eve's gravesto 2 CONC ne it states "EveBargmann, wife of Michael Bargmann, daughter of George and Anna EveBrakonier 2 CONC ", born 30 Nov 1752 in Hanou in Europe, died 18 May 1827, amember of the Lutheran Church. He 2 CONC r husbands gravestone says "MichaelBargmann, born 1738 in Europe & died 17 Dec 1818 age 80-1- 2 CONC 15. 2 CONT It seems that Gordon has chosen to change Eve's surname fromBrakonier to Procunier for th 2 CONC e purpose of his talk to his "Procunier"family. I have found that some other family genealog 2 CONC ists do the samething as Gordon when recording their ancestors. We must "preserve" thespelli 2 CONC ngs of our ancestors as it was recorded and not change theirsurnames to our own liking!! Gor 2 CONC don also spells Eve's name as Eva. 2 CONT Buried next to Eve is her daughter Catherine Smith. Her gravestonestates that she is th 2 CONC e daughter of Michael & Eve Bargmann, born 26 March1776 Berkeley County, Virginia, died 5 Jun 2 CONC e 1827 aged 51-2-10.. Also inthis cemetery is Catherine's sister Dorothy Heller, wife of Dan 2 CONC iel Heller& daughter of Michael & Eve Bargmann, born 20 June 1782 & died 25 Jan1829. 2 CONT Buried in this same cemetery is George Braggonier who died 2 October1862 aged 61-5-7, wh 2 CONC o we know is the son of George Bragonier and thegrandson of George & Anna Eve Bragonier. Daniel was born on hisparents farm called "Hagers Long Hickory" in H 2 CONC agerstown, WashingtonCounty Maryland. Daniel was the youngest of nine children. In 1799 Danie 2 CONC lmarried someone named Barbara in the First Reformed Church inElizabethtown Maryland. It wa 2 CONC s thought that this was Barbara Rohrer. However there is a recorded marriage of Daniel Bracuni 2 CONC er to BarbaraRohrer on May 28, 1811. Barbara is the daughter of Christian Rohrer, whoupon hi 2 CONC s death listed his daughter Barbara Bragonier as a beneficiary. Tocomplicate things more, the 2 CONC re is no death mentioned for the firstBarbara, nor are there any cemetery records of this fir 2 CONC st Barbara. Thereis a recorded death of a Barbara Bragonier (d/o David Bragonier) who diedJul 2 CONC y 19, 1811 aged 17 who might be confused with this Barbara ofDaniel’s. It’s possible that Dan 2 CONC iel married Barbara Rohrer in 1799, thenfound out the clergy performing the ceremony was no 2 CONC t licensed properly,so they married again in May of 1811 to make it legal. It appears thatDan 2 CONC iel and his new bride Barbara were living at the home of Daniel’sfather in 1800, since the ce 2 CONC nsus seems to indicate a younger male andfemale in the house at that time. In 1804 Daniel sha 2 CONC red in theinheritance of the family plantation, "Hager’s Long Hickory", with hisbrothers, Dav 2 CONC id and Jacob. In 1808 Daniel and Jacob sold their interestsin this property to their older br 2 CONC other, David. Daniel’s wife Barbaraappeared in that deed. In the 1810 census Daniel is give 2 CONC n as the head ofthe household in Elizabeth Hundred (Hagerstown), as were his brothers,David a 2 CONC nd Jacob. In this household were 3 males ae under 10 (Samuel,Daniel and David); 1 male ae 26- 2 CONC 45 (Daniel SR ae about 33); 2 females aeunder 10 (Susanna and Salome); 1 female 26-45 (Barbar 2 CONC a) and 1 other freeperson. From the location on the census, Daniel seems to have been livingn 2 CONC ext door to Jacob Rohrer and near to Frederick Rohrer. In the 1820census for Washington Count 2 CONC y Maryland 3rd district, Daniel’s householdincluded: 1 male ae under 10 (William ae 8); 2 mal 2 CONC es ae 10-16 (Daniel JRand David); 1 ae 16-26 (Samuel); 1 ae 45 or over (Daniel SR actually ae 2 CONC about 43); 1 female ae under 10 (the twin of William); 2 females ae 10-16(Salome and ?? ) [Th 2 CONC is second female ae 10-16 may not have been anotherdaughter. If Daniel’s wife was not livin 2 CONC g in 1820, it may have beenhousehold help]; 1 female ae 16-26 (Susanna). With this census rec 2 CONC ord itwould appear that Daniel’s wife Barbara was not living in 1820, or shewas living somepl 2 CONC ace else. The baptisms for the first five of Daniel’schildren appear in the records of the Zi 2 CONC on Reformed Church in Hagerstown. There is one error in these church records which list Davi 2 CONC d as the son ofDavid and Barbara, which should be David, son of Daniel and Barbara, asDavid’ 2 CONC s wife was not named Barbara. 2 CONT 2 CONT Children: 2 CONT 2 CONT 1.
