Rock Creek Cemetery

view of cemetery

One of the earliest cemeteries in the county is located at Rock Creek which is about 6 miles west of Haines. The cemetery is on an old road leading from Haines near the foot of the Elkhorn Mountains. It consists of 2.5 acres. It is believed the cemetery was started around 1862, the land being set aside for cemetery purposes by the Hearing family. The land was used for this purpose for about 20 years but was found to be undesirable due to underground water flooding the graves so burials were discontinued and the newer cemetery at Haines was used.(As of 2000, the cemetery had been rehabilated and is back to the use for burying.)

As for missing markers, here is the explanation from Belva Ticknor and Lewis Aldrich:
the janitor at the Rock Creek School let a burn barrel get out of hand and it caused a grass fire in the cemetery, burning the wooden markers.......one of the reasons they do not know where all the graves are, and another was because of grave markers being moved to so a farmer could farm some of the land. (more information coming)

No burial records were maintained for this cemetery. Grounds are maintained and graves are cared for by relatives. Among the earliest interments here are: (Belva Ticknor is supplying up to date information on burials at Rock Creek and the removals to Haines Cemetery, 2000) More data will be added as the information become available along with photographs of the cemetery and the markers. Rock Creek Cemetery is now under care of Haines Cemetery Association, Inc.
