Ronda - I just discovered there were two William Moores in Laurel/Rockcastle Co KY born about 1850/1852. There was Wm. F. Moore who married Bussell and Overbay and there was William Moore who married Catherine Milburn (the son of Isaac Moore (brother of James)). I had assumed they were the same Wm. but they were cousins (1X removed). So apparently your Wm. Moore DID NOT marry Catherine Milburn as I had thought. The web page I just posted is not correct - I just found this information today. I'll fix the web page soon.I have new information about the descendants of Lemuel Moore indicating that he already had a son named James so the younger James who was living with him in 1850 Laurel KY was probably his grandson:

In the 1910 census William gives his age as 54. This would translate to a birth year of 1856. Do you think we might have the wrong birth year for William? Or maybe the marriage year of 1854 is not correct.
Waht is the source for William's birth date? You wrote last year that William was age 37 on the marriage record in 1889. That translates to a birth year of about 1852. So I tend to believe he was born before 1854.
Also, James K. Moore who was William's brother was born May 1854. If James Sr and Mary were married in Feb 1854 this means James K. Moore was born only 3 months later. This also makes me believe there may be an error in the year of James and Mary's marriage and/or in the census records.
However, since James Sr. appeared to be single and living with Lemuel and Ann in 1850 it makes me wonder how he could have had a son in August 1850. I'll do some more checking to try and determine if we have the right James and Mary as William's parents.
There were so many errors in census and marriage records, it's hard to be sure about all of this.
If you have confidence that James Moore was the father of William F. Moore, it might be worth trying that DNA test. Would your father be willing to do it? It requires only a cheek swab using something similar to a Q-tip. There is no blood or pain involved.

His name is William F. Moore and was born 1850-51 and died June 10,1923. Willaim married at least twice and had several children by both wives. His first wife was Martha Overbay and they had the following children to my knowledge.
Billy,Greene,Sue Ellen,Martha,John and Albert who was called Pall. Willaim's family is listed in the Laurel County Census when he was a child and his parents are James Moore and Mary Moore. James was born in Greene County TN.
William's second wife was Tertha Lilitha (Tilitha) Bustle
who's parents were James and Melvina French Bustle.
William and Tilitha were married May 30,1889 and had the following children: Myrtle,Claude,Flaurdie,Fitz U. "Lee"

3. Ritta lived in Marshall, Mo. about 35 miles from Sedalia, Mo.
4. Oath was born Feb. 2, 1900. In 1959 he lived in California in the LA area. He had twin girls who were 13 or 14 years old April, 1959.
5. This son, don't know his name lived in Phili also. He died of a heart attack in 1952.
6. This son lived in Phili.
7. Henry. Not sure if this is John's son or not but, Margaret made mention of him in the letter when she was talking about John's children. He was married to Mary and lived about 20 miles from Nevada, in 1959.

Rufus was a railroad man. He died Dec. 23, 1951 with

The year 1863 was "the most woeful" in Vernon County's history. "Back and forth into Missouri rode the Kansas Jayhawkers; back and forth into Kansas rode the Missouri guerrillas; back and forth into loyal Cedar rode the Vernon Bushwhackers; back and forth into rebel Vernon rode the Cedar militia." Montevallo was burned by Iowa troops on April 14th, 1862. Farms were burned and pillaged. Men and boys were slain. Normal life, schooling, churches and law courts, had become a dim memory. The few families who hadn't fled south, struggling to carry on in a normal way, "had a hard time of it. They were preyed upon by both sides".

120. Mary Marinda SMALLWOOD (Mary Margaret MOORE , Lemuel , William (Rev.) , James ) was born in Sep 1865 in Missouri. She died about 1935 in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon.
Betty Jane Branson, Mary's granddaughter, recalls knowing Mary in her childhood. Mary was stricken with rheumatoid arthritis in her later years and was confined to a wheel chair. Betty recalls that Mary lived with them on several occasions. Betty's father, Gus Oren, loved to tell jokes and Betty remembers her grandmother laughing uproariously at Oren's joke telling. She was quite a sight to see, with no teeth, laughing loudly, and slapping her hands on the arms of her wheel chair. She was quite a character.
