Descendants of James MOORE

Third Generation

CAUTION:  Some of the information in this GEDCOM file was obtained from census records and has not been verified.  Please verify it before re-publishing or include a caution message with the published material.  If a question mark (?) is shown next to a first name, this means the individual's parentage is questionable.  Thank you.  Disclaimer

8. Lemuel MOORE (William (Rev.) , James ) was born about 1772 in Virginia. He died before 3 Jun 1859 in Laurel Co, KY.

Email from Bobbi recd. 6/22/2005:
I wanted to let you know that today I found a document in the chancery files on Nov 2 1812 where George Estes, his son John R. Estes ( who married Nancy Ann Moore, daughter of William Moore) and Lemuel Moore (proposed brother of Nancy Ann) all 3 signed a deposition in a lawsuit pertaining to Phoebe Combs. Phoebe Combs would be the step-mother-in-law of George Estes, and also Phoebe Combs the younger would be a half-sister to his wife.
This pretty much cinches it as far as I'm concerned that Lemuel is the son of William Moore.
Bobbi Estes

Email from Bobbi:
In Halifax in 1801, Lemuel Moore emerges beside William Moore (son of James, brother to Mackness and Rice) on the personal tax list. He is absent until in 1812 and then again in 1814. I will check all 3 of these years again to see the exact way the list is written, but I have to go to the family history center to do it. Hopefully this week.

If you’ll remember as well, Margaret says he is in Grainger on the tax list in 1804 (from memory), so he could have been going back and forth some. I believe John R. Estes (wife Nancy Ann Moore daughter of William) did the same from Claiborne to Virginia.

Margaret,

Lemuel shows up the first time in the taxes in 1801. Next he is there
in 1812 and 1814 and then is gone. The next place we find him is in
Grainger TN.

Now here is the rub. In 1801 he appears on the tax list the same day as
both Rev. William Moore and Daniel Moore. I need to go back to the LDS
center to see which one he actually appears beside.

I've managed to put Daniel's family together relatively well. He had 9
kids that we know of in 1785 (11 whites total) and he was born in
1730-1740 given that he was 90-100 in the 1830 census.

Here is another thing connecting the two familys, Daniel and William.
Daniel Moore has expensive dealings with Daniel Easley, selling him land
and such. There is a Sarah Moore who marrys Daniel Easley in 1787. I
had originally attributed this marriage to James Moore as his kids are
marrying at this time and the Easley family is located in that area
adjacent him. However, I then found Daniel Moore's land transactions
with Daniel Easley, leading me to believe that Sarah is Daniel's
daughter. Then I found Daniel Easley in Grainger two houses away from
Mackness. Now I don't' know. Daniel Easley is definitely gone from
Halifax. So is Lemuel. Also, Daniel appears to have a son Thomas and a
Thomas signs some documents with James and William about 1800 or so.

I'm almost wondering if Daniel is a brother to James, or somehow
related. However, Daniel comes from Chesterfield and there are no
conclusive records there either.

Subject: RE: Lemuel Moore's wife Ann
Bobbi, this gave me lots to look up. 1st Lemuel Moore was in the Gr. taxes in 1804. in 1799 and 1805 Samuel was. it does sound like they were the same person. Another source- 1805 list of free taxables in Gr. Micajah Estes, Samuel Moore, George Moore, John estes and miller Easley. In 1819 Warham easley was next to R. Moore. Richard Moore shows up next to mackness in 1815. another sosurce has 1810 taxes Mackness, Rice and Enoch together. And how was Starks moore. he shows up first in 1808 and is there for years.
---------------------------------------------------------
My Notes:
We know that a Samuel Moore married Alice Mendenhall in 1802 in Grainger, TN and had 11 children and went to IN. Another Samuel Moore married Ann Stubblefield in 1804. I don't think there was another Samuel in his generation in Grainger, although I could be wrong. I can't find anything in the census records for another Samuel. The fact that Joseph Stubblefield was living two doors away from Lemuel Moore in 1830 Grainger, TN is very strong evidence (to me) that the marriage record was not correct, and it should be Lemuel. Add to that, (1) the 1850 & 1860 census records in Laurel, KY where Lemuel Moore b. in VA in abt. 1772 is married to Ann, b. abt. 1784/85 in TN; (2) the fact that Joseph Pruitt who was listed on the 1777 Pittsylvania Oath of Allegiance list with William Moore (Lemuel's father), married Lemuel's daughter Nancy in KY.; (3) the fact that William Stubblefield, uncle of Ann, was on that same list; (4) the fact that Lemuel and Ann named a daughter Winifred and Ann Stubblefield had a sister named Winifred - add this all up and it all makes sense to me that it was Lemuel and not Samuel who married Ann Stubblefield.

Possible marriage record:
TENNESSEE MARRIAGES:
Moore, Samuel (Lemuel?) - Stubblefield, Ann 21 Jan 1804 Tennessee Grainger County

Emails to/from Juanita:
Sandy,
Wow, you have done much work on this side of the family. Congrats...
As I said, I haven't done much research here.... someday..
But, this all looks like a reasonably good path to follow.
Have put my efforts into the Philetus Johnson that married Nancy Jane Smallwood. Think I have found him, his family, etc. If so, he is buried in Fulton Co., OH.
Also, trying to join the DAR and putting most all my efforts into getting proof on ancestors and my links to the Patriot. It is a lot of work.... I should have written down where I found my information and got copies of original documents at that time.
Now, I have to backtrack and get those copies.
Now, if my DAR membership lady would recoup fast so she can help me go through this maze! She just had lung surgery and hopefully she is doing well.
Yes, I would like whatever data you might have. We have made a trip (7-9 years ago) to Rockcastle, KY (think that was it) going by my memory here (and that's questionable)... ha...
But, have folders full of info... and never put it together.... another item to put on my 'to do' list.
Thanks, Juanita

Juanita - I've been tossing around the idea that our Lem might be the one who was in Rutherford North Carolina. There is quite a bit on the internet about that family but not much about Lemuel. Below are the census records - he seems to disappear from Rutherford NC after 1840 - our Lem seems to suddenly appear in Laurel, KY in 1850 - could be the same person. The Lemuel in Rutherford NC married Margaret. I did a test census analysis to see if the family members in the households of 1800, 1810, 1820 and 1830 make sense and it's pretty close. According to a descendant this family went back and forth between Giles Co, TN and Rutherford, NC quite a bit. I could never figure out how Mary Margaret Smallwood was born in Tennessee but this could explain it. One of this Lemuel's sons was Isaac and I found an Isaac in Rockcastle Co, KY in 1850 - but he was born in KY so I don't know if it's him. He also had a son James and there was a James Moore in Laurel Co, KY in 1840 b. abt 1800/1805. He shows up in Giles, TN in 1850. He may have died before 1860 - there was a Nancy Smallwood in Rockcastle KY in 1860 - looks like a widow - could be his widow. Anyway, I haven't found anything that conflicts with this theory yet.
I have more info on them if you want it. Let me know what you think about this idea.
Thanks, Sandy

I saw your database on the internet and I have reason to believe that my ancestor was Lemuel Moore, son of George Moore and Martha. The only census records I've found that I'm 100% sure of are in Laurel Co KY in 1840 and 1850. I have found a Lemuel Moore the right age in 1800, 1810 and 1820 Rutherford NC but he is no longer there after 1820. My Lemuel was born before 1772 in VA and I can find no other Lemuel Moores prior to 1840 born that early - other than the one in Rutherford NC. I can't find him in 1830 unless he is the one who is in Giles TN. I sent for the census records but they are very difficult to read and I can't find him listed even though he's indexed there on Ancestry.com. He was indexed as Lemuel H. Moore. I believe he had several children/grandchildren born in TN and his wife was born in TN - see 1850 census below. I think Ann is not his first wife. I was hoping you could provide assistance in my research on Lemuel.

It looks like Moses had land in KY before he went to Greene Co TN - then he went back to KY.

I've also been trying to connect the Moores who were in Greene Co TN from Pennsylvania to those who went to Knox and Laurel Co KY - I found this quite interesting.....

On Monday, March 5, 1838, James Goodner, Jonathan C. Doss, Lemuel Moore, Reuben Evans, Joseph Turney, Thomas Simpson, John Martin, Watson Cantrell, David Fisher, William Scott, Samuel Strong, Henry Burton, Martin Phillips, John Frazier, Joel Cheatham, Jonathan Fuston, Peter Reynolds and James Batey, all holding commissions as justices for Dekalb County, met at the house of Bernard Richardson, on Fall Creek, and organized the county court by electing Lemuel Moore, chairman. The several county officers produced their certificates of election, qualified and entered upon the discharge of their respective duties, and the wheels of the Government were set in motion. The court continued to meet at Richardson's house until the completion of the log courthouse. The circuit court of Dekalb County was also organized at Richardson's, the first session being held on the second Monday in August, 1838, over which Judge A. J. Marchbanks presided. The chancery court was organized at the courthouse in Smithville in March, 1844, by Chancellor B. L. Ridley.

Ronda -

James Moore (b. abt 1879), the son of William F. Moore and Catherine Milburn (I believe she was the 1st of 3 wives including Martha Overbay and Tilitha Bussell) was in Wilton, Knox Co, KY in 1910 and 1920. In 1930 James was in Corbin, Whitley, KY. Corbin is the same town where some other people from Laurel Co moved including descendants of Thomas Young who married Mary E. Moore, daughter of Hiram Moore. Hiram has not been connected to William F. Moore yet, but it's possible that they are closely related. If so, that could mean that Lemuel Moore (probable grandfather of Wm. F. Moore) was also related to Hiram Moore. Hiram was the son of Moses Moore who was in Greene Co TN until abt 1805 when he moved to Laurel Co KY. Lemuel wasn't listed in Greene Co TN but there was a Samuel and those names are very similar - it could have been a misspelled name. Moses was born abt 1762 in VA and Lemuel was born abt 1772 in VA. Both were in TN and ended up in Laurel Co. There's a chance that the father of Moses (and possibly the father of Lemuel) was a James Moore from PA (b. abt 1735) who could have been related to Anthony Moore from PA. James was also in Greene Co TN in early 1800's. Anthony was in Greene Co TN from abt 1783 until he died there in abt 1822. Anthony's family is well documented and none of them moved to Laurel Co. Most of them stayed in TN. David Moore was his only son. Another possible link: a descendant of Lemuel Moore indicated to me that she was told her ancestors were from PA.

I have suspected for some time that Lemuel was related to Moses but could not find a connection. The fact that his gr-grandson moved to the same town as a descendant of Moses Moore give me at least a slight connection.

The following information shows that SC was part of TN before TN became a state. Lemuel's children were born in TN so it makes sense that he would be in SC in 1800:

There was a Lemuel Moore in Laurens, SC 1800 at the same time as Ephraim Moore, son of Thomas Moore and Rosannah Fowler whos family was in Knox Co KY by 1802. The chances are good that Lemuel was related to this Moore family. He may have been a nephew of Thomas Moore.

I found a few Moores near Stinking Creek, Knox Co KY in 1820. Didn't see them before because they were indexed as Woon and Wood. Isaac, Aaron and John - could be related to Lemuel

In Little Raccoon (Little Rockcastle):
Aaron Moore (210001-11010) - age 45+
John Moor (120001-00101) - age 45+

There are other references to Isaac in Knox Co. He was in Knox Co in 1830. There was an Isaac Moore in Laurel Co KY in 1860 whose children were born in TN - he wasn't there before 1860. He could be related to Lemuel as well as the older Isaac who was Knox Co KY in 1803-1806) I'm still looking. The people listed with Isaac on the following tax lists are Thomas who married Rosannah Fowler, his son Jesse (may have been the Jesse Moore who helped formed Laurel Co), an unknown William (may have been the one who filed for Rev War Pension in 1835 Rockcastle Co), and unknown John Moore (see notes below). Thomas and Rosannah's children are fairly well documented and there is no John, Isaac or Lemuel.

NOTES ON JOHN MOORE:
http://www.tcnet.net/ky/knox/decker.html
Apparently there was a John Moore in Stinking Creek, Knox Co KY by 1802:
A Knox County road order dated August 2, 1802, reads as follows: "Beginning at the State Road near the house of Thomas Goodin, leaving the house and plantation of the said Goodin on the right hand, thence nearly along the now Trace up Stinking, leaving the house and plantation now occupied by John MOORE on the left hand, still keeping along the present trace, leaving the house and plantation whereon John Baker now lives on the right hand, still continueing nearly along said trace to the head branch of the left hand fork of Stinking Creek to the top of the ridge dividing the waters of Stinking Creek from the waters of Goose Creek."

Could the Polly Moore referred to below be related to John Moore?
Knox County Court August Term 1865.
The report of Allen Goodin gate keeper of Knox Country for this quarter ending 26th August, 1865 was this day produced to Court, sworn to and ordered of record, as follows, to wit: the amount of toll taken in at the Toll Gate at Polly Moore's (Log Mountain) in Knox County was $258.90, after taking the gate keeper's salary for his services for the quarter $43.75, leaves to be expended on the roads $536.90, on the State Road $413.01, on the Goose Creek Road $125.89.

There was a Thomas L Moore in Williamson, TN in 1820:

Probably not Lemuel

A possible relative:
MOSES LEMUEL MOORE
Male
Birth: 06 OCT 1860 , Washington, Tennessee
Death: 22 JAN 1924
Parents:
Father: JAMES MOORE - could be the James Moore who was in early Greene Co TN
Mother: LULITICA SEXTON CARSON - there were Carsons in early Greene Co TN

What if our Lemuel is actually the Moses or James Moore who was in Greene Co TN with Anthony? There were a lot of James's in that group and maybe he decided to go by his middle name to avoid confusion. OR - what if Lemuel was actually the Jesse Moore who served in the original group who formed Laurel County? Lemuel's wife was Ann. I found this will of Jesse Moore (Lemuel disappears from census records after 1850, so the timing is right):

Whereas Jesse MOORE late of Laurel County and state of Kentucky departed this life domiciled in the county and state aforesaid having first made and published his last will and testament which was after his death duly proven and admitted to record in the Laurel County Court in which will then is the following clause, to wit: The first of my Devisees is my beloved wife whom I will shall have one third of my entire estate both real and personal after the payments of my debts during her natural life and after that to be equally divided between my children or such of them as is by my will made devisees or she may elect to take a child's part absolutely or she may elect to take one thousand dollars instead of either of the above specifications: Now in persuance of the provision of said will, I, Margaret Ann MOORE widow of the said Jesse MOORE do by these presents elect to take under said will the bequest of one thousand dollars in preferance and intead of either of the other provisions made for me by said will.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of June 1859.
Margaret Ann MOORE
State of Kentucky, Laurel County

Jesse was married to Margaret Ann Cathers and they had a daughter named Nancy in 1802. Nancy Moore who married Joseph Pruitt (believed to be the daughter of Lemuel) was born about that time. Also Jesse Moore was born in Culpepper Co VA. Lemuel was born in VA at close to the same time.

What if Lemuel was actually Jesse Lemuel Moore? Or James Lemuel Moore? Or Moses Lemuel Moore?

I will start to search in this direction and see what else I can come up with.

Thanks!
Sandy

Email to Jim Rottet (5/18/2004):
Jim - I was checking your database and found another possible connection. Lemuel Moore's other daughter, Nancy, married Joseph Pruitt - they were living next door to Lemuel in 1850 Laurel Co KY. In your database is a Mary Magdelene Pruitt married to William Moore. I think we may be on to something here....
(Lucy Broughton married Charles D. Moore)
Thanks!
Sandy

Mary Margaret is not listed but she may be living in KY with relatives. It appears the mother of these children is not alive or has left the family. I wonder if the Nancy Moore living with the older Lemuel could be the wife of the above Lemuel who is living with him in 1840 with a younger female Mary's age.

If he was the same Lemuel Moore who was involved in forming some of the counties in TN this could explain why he was living in different counties in 1810, 1820 and 1830. Also, the fact that TN counties were being split up quite often during that time span would explain it.

CANNON COUNTY, TENNESSEE

WARREN, COFFEE, WILSON AND RUTHERFORD FURNISHED THE TERRITORY

CANNON COUNTY was cut off out of lands lying East of BEDFORD, and Warren, Coffee, Wilson and Rutherford counties each furnished part of the territory for CANNON,which was established January 21, 1836. Although it joins BEDFORD on the East the Bedford Territory was not disturbed, as it was at that time. DANVILLE was the name of the County seat until the name was changed to WOODBURY. Most of the land belonged to HENRY McBROOM and his brother at the time, and HENRY WILEY had a store there. Later the McBrooms built what was called the DILLON HOTEL, which was burned in 1907.

The first meeting of the County court was held in McBroom's Tavern in May, 1836. Present as magistrates were the following persons:

Thomas Powell
Joseph Simpson
Isaac Finley
ISAAC W. ELLEDGE
I. M. Brown
F. L. Turner
John Melton
William Bates
William B. Foster
Martin Phillips
REUBEN EVANS
Peter Reynolds
Joel Cheatham
Allen Haley
Blake Sedgley
Jas. L. Essary
John Pendleton
Elijah Stephens
C. C. Evans
Samuel Lance
John Martin
John Frazer
LEMUEL MOORE
James Goodwin
James Batey
Jonathan Fuston

The following persons were selected to hold the various county offices and qualified at the above meeting:

SAMUEL J. GARRISON, County Court
Clerk.
GEORGE GRIZZIE, Sheriff.
ALEKANDER F. McFERRIN, Register.
JOB STEPHENS, Trustee.
ALEXANDER McKNIGHT, Coroner.
HENRY H. CLIFTON, Ranger.
(I wonder just what the
office of "Ranger" was?)
WILLIAM STONE, Entry Taker.
HUGH ROBINSON, Surveyor.

HUGH ROBINSON, JAMES CLARK, ARCH. STONE, WILLIAM BATES, JOHN B. STONE and JOHN BROWN, were appointed to lay off the town lots for sale.

ABOUT SOME OF THE FIRST MAGISTRATES OF CANNON COUNTY

The next year after CANNON COUNTY was established the county of DeKALB was established and part of the territory for that county was taken from Cannon. A check of the names of the first magistrates of CANNON in 1836, shows that in 1837 the following persons:

Lamuel Moore, Chairman (was Lemuel an attorney?)
Reuben Evans
Martin Phillips
John Martin
Joel Cheatham
Jonathan Fuston
John Frazer
Peter Reynolds and
James Batey

were all among the new megistates of members of the county court of DeKalb County. This is probably explained by the fact that these men were living in that part of CANNON that was transferred to DEKALB in 1837 & therefore were, by the establishment ??f the new county transferred into it by the Act that oreated DeKalb. Check of many other early Tennessee Counties show up similar peouliarities. But these do not mean that Mr.LEMUEL MOORE and REUBEN EVANS, for instances, were vassilating around over the country making it their business to serve as "Justice" of every new county that came into existence; nor does it mean that there were two or three men of the same name. They were the same men,-it was just the constant change of county lines that were taking place in old Tennessee, as it began to fill up towards the West.

In May, 1836, Thomas Powell. Isaac Finley, Allen Haley, Joseph Simpson, Blake
Sedgly, James L. Essary, John Pendleton, Isaac W. Eledge, Elijah Stephens,
I.M. Brown, F.L. Turner, John Milton, Charles C. Evans, Samuel Lance, Wm.
Bates, Wm. B. Foster, John Martin, John Frazier, Martin Phillips, Reuben
Evans, Lemuel Moore, James Goodwin, Peter Reynolds, James Beatie, Joel
Cheatham and Jonathan Fuson, all bearing commissions as justices, met at the
house of Henry d. McBroom, which was the old hotel, in Woodbury, for the
purpose of organizing the county court. The body was called to order by
Leighton Ferrell, sheriff of Warren County, and the oath of office was
administered by Eli Bailey, acting justice for Warren County.

WHAT OTHER CHILDREN DID THEY HAVE?????????????

I think Lemuel was in Giles Co TN in 1830 (page 41). A Lemuel H. Moore is indexed there but I can't find him on the images, they are very difficult to read and sections are totally unreadable even on the hard copies. In 1817 Giles Co was split to create Lawrence Co and that is where John Smallwood (married to Francis Smith) died in 1821. In 1830 Francis is living in Clay Co KY. In 1840 Lemuel is in Laurel Co KY. In 1840 it looks like Francis is living with her son Elijah in Clay Co KY. Also in Giles Co TN in 1830 is William Moore, page 40/214, Ezekiel Moore, page 39, Patrick (looks more like Japthah) Moore, page 38/193, George B. Moore, page 38, Benjamin Moore, page 38, Thomas Moore (36/170). These may be relatives of Lemuel. In 1820 There is a William Moore in Clay Co KY. A William Moore, age 78, filed a military pension claim in 1823 in Rockcastle Co KY. He was living in Rockcastle Co KY in 1820 (males: 0 2 0 2 0 1, females: 1 1 0 0 1). Lemuel Moore does not show up in TN after 1830 so I assume he moved to KY between 1830 and 1840.

Lemuel married Ann STUBBLEFIELD daughter of Robert Loxley STUBBLEFIELD and Sarah EASLEY on 21 Jan 1804 in Grainger Co, TN. Ann was born on 7 Jan 1785 in Hawkins, TN. She died after 1850 in Of Laurel Co, Kentucky.

Another researcher shows that Ann Stubblefield married Edmond Rice but there is no documentation and the researcher cannot be reached.

I found Edmund Rice age 78 in 1850 in Madison, AL, but his wife was Sarah age 50 (she could be 2nd wife). He was also in Madison, AL in 1840 along with Andrew J, Elisha, Joseph, Septimus and William Rice. In 1830 I found an Edmond Rice age 20-30 (too young?) in Jackson, AL listed next to a Nathaniel Stubblefield age 30-40. This Edmond Rice had no young females in his household - just one female age 50-60. There may have been an error in the census record - Edmond may have been older than 20-30. Also in Jackson AL in 1830 was Drury, Benjamin, James, Margaret and Sally Rice - and a Nancy Stubblefield age 30-40. On the same page with these people was a Sally Tally age 40-50. I know that John Rice, son of our Thomas Rice, married Elizabeth Tally and his sister Rachel married Robert Tally.

I haven't found any other information about Ann in other databases except the marriage record with her and "Samuel". I cannot find her in census records living with a Samuel Moore.
If Ann, dau. of RL Stubblefield, married Edmund Rice, then my theory is not correct and she did not marry my Lemuel. However, someone named Ann Stubblefield did marry a "Samuel" (or Lemuel) Moore in 1804 in Grainger TN and it may have been the same Ann who also married Edmund Rice - or it may have been another Ann Stubblefield. Since Lemuel Moore was listed next to Joseph R. Stubblefield in 1830 Grainger TN, it is possible that Joseph had a daughter Ann and she is the one who married Samuel or Lemuel Moore. Because of other evidence in my notes below, I think my Lemuel married Ann Stubblefield, however, I'm now not sure who her parents were.

MA - Here's what I think is wrong - I think Wm. Broughton had fewer children by Sarah Ann Johnson then I have in my database. I think Judith, Margaret, Mary, Elizabeth and Jefferson were not their children but the children of another Broughton family. Look at the 1840 census analysis - it doesn't add up. I think Winniford did marry Wm. s/o Woodard, but the 1860 family is someone else. Sandy

TO MA:
MA - They could be two different Williams, but Lillian could also be incorrect. Do you think they both had sons named Jefferson Broughton b. in 1844 and both of them married a Sally (Salla), and both had a Permelia b. 1873, etc. etc. ? - it doesn't sound right to me.

I can find only one Jefferson Broughton b. ca 1844, one Permelia, etc. in census records...so far. I'm thinking that Winniford married a different Wm. Broughton and not the son of Woodard. I'll do some more checking.

Sandy,
I went to the Broughton "Bible" --Lillian's book -- and she also has the W. H. and Salla listed in 1860, so I think they are another family with similar names. Notice the last two are Bennet?

William married Sally in 1833, last child born 1847, Lillian says no childen from second marriage to Winniford Moore in 1849, so it looks like the Sally Johnson died or divorced between 1847 and 1849! Lillian has this couple in 1850 and 1860 like your listing....note the 78 year old Elizabeth is a Broughton, not Moore. Think the William 12 is Broughton not Moore. That Census taker must have been drinking!

MA - I'm a little confused about something. I have the marriage date for Winniford Moore and Wm. Broughton as Nov 30 1849 and yet I found him in the 1860 census with wife Sally and the same children that he had with Sarah Johnson. I also found Wm. and Winniford Braughton in 1850 and 1860. Do I have the wrong William Broughton that she married?

Azariah Moore was born about 1790 (between 1790 and 1800). He married Letitia and they had four daughters and two sons. According to the census, one son apparently died, but James F. Moore who was born in abt. 1822 survived. Azariah died between 1860 and 1870. In 1880 we find Letitia S. Moore age 79 living with her son James F. Moore, age 58. It appears that James never marries, or he marries after his mother’s death sometime after 1880. Does anyone know what happened to James F (or S) Moore. Did he leave, marry, or die after his mother’s passing? What happened to the daughters?

My John R. Estes (wife Nancy Ann Moore daughter of Rev. William son of James of Halifax) had a son named Jechonias. Now that is an EXTREMELY unusual name and if you’ve had cause to research this name, you’ll quickly find that the Yancey and Overby families are the primary (if not only) source of this name in early Virginia. I spent years, and I do mean years chasing down the Overby and Yancy familys to absolutely no avail. They did marry into the Moores in Mecklenburg and believe me I thought I had it nailed at one time, but I didn’t. I have yet to find even a hint of a connection aside from the name itself.

Same file has this tantalizing but going nowhere tidbit linking one John Jennings and one earlier David Moore (our David born 1772): In 1750 Henry Robertson bought 200 acres in Amelia County from Hall Hudson for £30 and sold it twenty-five years later to John Jennings for £80. Henry secured a patent to 198 acres on Whetstone Branch in 1770 and purchased 200 acres from David Moore in 1772. During February 1779 Henry sold 348 acres in Amelia County to Matthew Cralle of Lunenburg County for £2,500. The tract was in three parcels: the 100-acre Bush purchase of 1754 , 98 acres that had been surveyed for Thomas Munford, and 150 acres of the David Moore purchase of 1772.

David? married Mary Margaret SHEARMAN daughter of John SHEARMAN and Mildred EDWYN in 1789 in North Carolina. Mary was born in 1774 in North Carolina . She died in 1880 in Blount, TN.

Email from Bobbi:
***Mackness is known to have a son James. The McAnally person confirms that this is the same family. There was another James who was there early that might well have been the older brother of Mackness and Rice. There definitely was an older brother who disappears from Halifax before Mackness and Rice do.
Mackness’s will mentions only daughter Sarah saying that the others have been provided for. So frustrating.
