He took part along with his older brother - Pierre Lerou 2 CONC x - in the overthrow of the French King Louis Philippe in the 1848 revolution. 2 CONT 2 CONT Both Leroux brothers were very political figures and well connected. They regularly were ass 2 CONC ociated with politicians and writers - the likes of Victor Hugo and George Sand. In 1848?, B 2 CONC oth brothers were elected to the French Parliament (House of Deputies) - Pierre Leroux alread 2 CONC y serving as Mayor of Boussac France. During Louis Napoleon's Coup de Tat of 1851, both wer 2 CONC e very outspoken in their opposition. On XXXX, expulsion orders were given which sent many o 2 CONC f the opposition to exile. The Lerouxs and their families went into exile to the English hel 2 CONC d Islands of Jersey and Guernsey. In 18XX, the expulsion was lifted. Pierre Leroux returne 2 CONC d to Paris. Jules Leroux and his family emigrated to the United States homesteading in Nemah 2 CONC a County Kansas. In 18XX Jules Lerous started the French newspaper Le Etoil de Kansas (The S 2 CONC tar of Kansas. In 18XX, the Leroux family (including new son in law and his Family Amil Zurc 2 CONC her) moved to Corning Iowa to become part of the Icarian Settlement in Adams County Iowa. I 2 CONC n 1881, The Lerouxs and Zurchers and several others moved from Corning Iowa to Sonoma Count 2 CONC y California to start a new Icarian settlement called Icaria Speranza. This settlement was o 2 CONC n the fertile soil of the Alexander valley in Cloverdale (California) along the banks of th 2 CONC e Russian River. 2 CONT Jules Leroux died on October 15, 1883. He is buried in the Cloverdale Cemetery along side hi 2 CONC s 2 CONT wife and daughter XXX. The Icarian Settlement broke-up in 1887. The property was divided am 2 CONC ong 2 CONT the families. Little remains today of this very interesting period. The old highway has bee 2 CONC n 2 CONT replaced by a modern 4 lane freeway that cuts the Icarian property down the middle. The Icar 2 CONC ian 2 CONT property is fast being covered over by commercial development. 2 CONT 2 CONT Inventing Eden 2 CONT 2 CONT On the trail of Sonoma County's century-long search for utopia 2 CONT By Steve Bjerklie 2 CONT 2 CONT In America, the immigrant Icarians struggled until they discovered a bonanza: the ghost tow 2 CONC n left behind by the Mormons at Nauvoo, Ill. Brigham Young had set out for the Utah Territor 2 CONC y in 1846; two years later the Icarians moved into a perfectly empty but still intact villag 2 CONC e (ironically, one of the first tasks undertaken by the French Icarians was the planting of v 2 CONC ineyards on land the teetotaling Mormons had previously planted in corn). Yet disenchantmen 2 CONC t among the Icarians eventually led to the exile from Nauvoo of Cabet himself, who had joine 2 CONC d his followers in America. More splits occurred until finally, in 1881, Armand Dehay and Jul 2 CONC es Leroux scouted the Sonoma County property and bought it for $15,000. The commune's origina 2 CONC l name, Speranza, came from L'Esperance, an Icarian newsletter; by 1884 it was known as Icari 2 CONC a-Speranza. Vineyards, fruit orchards, a prune orchard, and vegetable gardens were planted. 2 CONT 2 CONT But mundane financial difficulties of the capitalist variety found their way into the communi 2 CONC st society. Hopes that the sale of land in the Midwest would allow Icaria-Speranza to pay of 2 CONC f the debt on the Sonoma County land were dashed when the Midwest property could be sold fo 2 CONC r only cents on the dollar. An experiment in breeding Norman and Percheron horses proved disa 2 CONC strous. By 1887, Icaria-Speranza was no longer a functional community, its property divided a 2 CONC mong the colonists. The community lives on, however, in the name Icaria Creek and in severa 2 CONC l Dehay, Leroux, and other Icaria-Speranza descendants who still live in Sonoma County. The h 2 CONC eritage society meets in Cloverdale quadrennially. 2 CONT 2 CONT From the Sonoma Independent Archives 2 CONT http://www.metroactive.com/papers/sonoma/07.03.96/utopia-9627.html 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 2 CONT 2 CONT KANSAS COLLECTION BOOKS 2 CONT http://www.ku.edu/carrie/kancoll/books/crevecoeur/ost14.htm 2 CONT by F.F. He lived a while in the Louis C. Simon house, which stood on what is no 2 CONC w Paul Junod's farm, then moved to the Fred Bonjour farm, now Mrs. Theys'. He homesteaded th 2 CONC e farm now belonging to James Meek, and built a frame house, into which he soon after moved 2 CONC . His wife was a German lady, and she and the following children came with him to this locali 2 CONC ty: Peter, Gabrielle (Mrs. Ami Zurcher), Lizette (Mrs. Etienne Pepies) [sic], Paul, Jules, jr 2 CONC ., and Mary (Mrs. Armand Dehay), After Mr. Leroux came here he established a French politica 2 CONC l paper called "L' Etoile de Kansas" (The Star of Kansas), which he printed in his home on th 2 CONC e farm. It was a Republican paper, in which Mr. Leroux worked for the political emancipatio 2 CONC n of the French people. He had a lot of feed burned by a prairie fire two or three years afte 2 CONC r he moved onto his farm. He was a barber b 2 CONC y trade. He bought a farm, which afterwards became Mr. Rossier's. He could not get a good tit 2 CONC le to it, so he next bought the farm belonging to Mrs. C. As Europe has the hedgehog, which is typica 2 CONC l to the soil of Europe, so have we one that is typically American. Not long after Mr. Peti 2 CONC t came back here he ran across a pretty , little, black and white animal, and the thought str 2 CONC uck him that it would be quite desirable as a pet for the children. So he thought he would se 2 CONC e if he could capture it and take it home. As the rose has its thorns, so did the animal hav 2 CONC e its faults, and when a grab was made for it, it resented the gentleman's familiarity in a f 2 CONC orceful way, and Mr. Petit swore that then, there, and forever, he would quit trying to mak 2 CONC e pets of any and all wild creatures that he might afterwards meet in the wilds of America. 2 CONT 2 CONT Etienne Pepin is a stone cutter by trade, and a Canadian by birth.
