On Thursday, 27 Feb. 1968 the following appeared on the front page of the Bremerton Sun Newspaper- Tracyton Youth Killed: A 13-year-old Central Kitsap Junior High School student was accidently shot to death by a friend yesterday afternoon, Kitsap Sheriff's Department detectives said.
The victim, Micheal James Lindsey, was dead on arrival at Harrison Memorial Hospital. He was the son of Alfred J. and Sylvia Lindsey ofTracyton.
Kitsap County detectives said the Lindsey boy was shot by a friend,Charles E. Russell, 17, also of Tracyton, who pulled the trigger of a gun he believed was not loaded.
The hospital said Lindsey died of internal bleeding caused when the bullet passed through his liver and severed the abdominal aorta.
Detectives quoting young Russell gave this version of events leading up to the shooting.
The two boys had just returned home from school. They ate pieces of pie in the kitchen of the Lindsey home. Lindsey was getting some cheese out of the refrigerator when Russell noticed a .22 calibre rifle on the porch. To surprise Lindsey, he got the rifle and pointed it at him through the crack between the refrigerator and the open door. Russell's hand hit the trigger and the gun discharged.
Detectives said there was no trigger guard on the loaded, single shot weapon. The Russell boy attempted to phone for help, but found the line busy. He then ran across the road to the Tracyton store and told the proprietor that he had shot Lindsey. The Silverdale ambulance was called.
First call to the ambulance was placed shortly before 3:45 p.m. The boy was declared dead on arrival on the hospital half an hour later.
The bullet hit the deceased just below the rib cage and passed through the body. The Lindsey boy was in the seventh grade at the Central Kitsap Junior High School. he was born on 21 June 1954 in Bremerton. He attended Tracyton Elementary School before entering junior high this year.
He is survived by two brothers, Ronald J. Lindsey, 21, of the family home, and Gary L. Lindsey, 20, Silverdale (Rte 4, Box 2321) and by a half-brother, Mark Dallas, now serving in Vietnam.
Also surviving him are his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Hilda Smith of Everett and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Nina Lindsey of Tracyton.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Lewis Funeral Chapel.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Ronald and Gary of the family home; material grandmother, Mrs. Hilda Smith of Everett,Washington, and paternal grandmother, Mrs. Nina Lindsey of Tracyton,Private family services will be held at the Lewis Funeral Chapel withRev. L. Warren Hanson officiating. Burial will be at Tracyton Cemetery.Micheal Lindsey may be viewed at Lewis Funeral Chapel until 8 p.m.Wednesday, 28 February 1968. - Bremerton Sun, 28 Feb. 1968-

A second obituary appeared on 28 February 1968:
Private family services will be held at Lewis Funeral Chapel tomorrow at 11 a.m. for Micheal James Lindsey, 13-year-old Central High school student who was accidently shot to death by a friend Monday afternoon.
The Rev. L. Warren Hanson will officiate. Burial will follow inTracyton
Cemetery. The body will lie in state at Lewis Chapel until the time of the service.

Postscript: According to Ron Lindsey, the three Lindseys brothers had grown up around weapons and had been taught how to use them. Charles E.Russell, was a different story, his parents strictly forbid him to join the brothers. Every time the Lindsey brothers tried to instruct Russell about weapons, his parents would go into a shouting match. They were appalled at the idea that their son would even handle a gun.
