George and his family were converted to Mormonism through the preaching of Elders David Whitmer and Harry Whitlock at Sugar Creek, Worcester County, Ohio. They joined the saints and moved to Independence, Missouri, where their youngest child Mary Ann was born on March 16, 1833. They were expelled with the other Mormons by mob violence from Jackson County, Missouri. For the next five years lived in Clay County, then making their home for a brief period in Caldwell County. Whence they were driven with their people and went to Adams County, Illinois. In 1851 George migrated with the Mormons to Salt Lake City, Utah, where he died that year on Dec. 20, 1851.

George Carson was born on July 17, 1794, the youngest son of William Carson and Ruth Sherman, in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. George married Ann Hough and they had eight children. George and Ann's family had six boys and two girls. The first three were born in Wayne, Mifflin Co., Penn. : William in 1818, John in 1819, and Jonathan in 1820. Their fourth child, and our ancestor, Elizabeth was also born in Mifflin County in 1822. Then they moved and had twins George and David born in Greene, Wayne Co., Ohio, in 1827, where their son Washington was also born on Apr. 18, 1830.

The following account of some of his children was written by David H. Carson of Lehi, Utah, a great-grandson:

"It was in the spring of 1851 that George Carson and his family set out for Utah. In the family group were their children William Carson and family, John and family, Elizabeth and her husband Patison D. Griffith and family, the twins David and George, Washington, Mary Ann and her husband Thomas Bradford Ewings, who were married May 19, 1851.

"At Winter Quarters they were out fitted with the usual stock of supplies for the trip across the plains. The Mormon Emigrant Train in which they traveled was under the direction of Captain Harry Walton. There were sixty wagons in the train. William Huff Carson was the Captain of ten wagons. The journey was long but pleasant. Two deaths occurred on the way. Those were Mother Thompson and Miss Kingsley. She was killed by jumping from a runaway wagon. Then the oxen could smell the blood of slain buffalo they would get mad and this caused a stampede. William's team was the only one that did not run away. He controlled his oxen by means of rope line which he had just put on them.

"The George Carson family arrived in Salt Lake Valley the latter part of September 1851. They went directly to Little Cottonwood. On December 14, 1851 George passed away and was buried in little Cotton Wood. William's wife died July 7,1854 leaving a family of five, the youngest was William Harrison Carson, who was born in a covered wagon at Loop Fork Nebraska. The stop over for the child was just one half day. Quoting from William Harrison in 1933 he said: 'Sula Goddard lived with us and before Mother died she asked Sula if she would care for us five children. She did and about a year later married father (William Huff)'.

"In 1855 the five Carson brothers, along with William Beardshall, John Clegg, Amos Fielding settled at Fairfield, Utah, and others came later. They established themselves a fort which they erected as a protection against the Indians. The fort was four rods square and was built in 1856-1857. In 1856 Indian trouble started. On the 21st of February, 1856 George Jr. was fatally wounded by Indians on the south side of town. After the skirmish the Indians went over toward Utah Lake by way of Soldier Pass. On February 22, they met and killed Washington Carson and Henry Moran, who were caring for some cattle near the lake. On that same day George died, making three deaths by the Tintic Indians. The Indians headed for the Tintic District and were never over taken."

George married Ann HOUGH on 17 Jun 1817 in Mifflin Co, Pennsylvania. Ann was born on 27 Jun 1794 in Mifflin Co, Pennsylvania.

They had the following children:

A PIONEER HISTORY
of Wayne Tp., Darke County, Ohio
by Samuel Long
1901
http://www.usroots.com/~compugen/darke/lon22-25.htm

Absalem Brandon, who was not a resident pioneer, but his son, William, and daughters, Mrs. Hannah Dunwoody and Mrs. James* Conner were, is said to have brought out from the "Old Dominion," the apple seeds from which were grown the scions, from which the orchards on the many Brandon farms resulted. Fruit of these trees, the Author has often eaten to his fill, drank many a tin-full of cider of this same fruit, and carried many a piece of bread to school for his dinner, spread, not only with golden butter, but with apple butter of this same fruit, and apple pie as well, which makes us think of the school days of youth, and say, "dear old days, a thing of beauty is a joy forever."
Anthony Brandon, one of the seven sons of old Richard, seems not to have owned any real estate here, and died in early years. Of his offspring there were Lewis, Rolla, Matilda, Sarepta, Zephah, and Mary. The mother and widow moved to Ft. Jefferson, Darke county. Walter Brandon, old Uncle "Watty" called, and oldest of the seven brothers, owned one-half of a quarter section between Swisher and Greer and on either side of Swamp Creek. His children, some of whom were of mature years on arrival, were James, Walter, Levi, 'Squire, Mariah, Sallie, and Harriet, all of whom became prominent citizens of the community.
David Brandon succeeded to the old Childer's homestead near the mouth of Swamp creek. He and York were the early Justices of the Peace. Of his family there were Xury, Zimmery, Rufus, Nephah, Clayburn, Gabrilla, Lucinda, Letta, and Almira, well known in early days. Richard Brandon jr. and father of Rev. Richard, owned a part of Vincent G's., and died when his children were small, but his widow lived to a great age and was known as old Aunt Anna. Of these chihlren there were Robinet, Richard, Isaiah, and Polly. They were well known citizens in the earlier community.
Job owned one-half of the quarter section to the north of the old homestead. He was one of the leading citizens. Of his family there were Jefferson, Zar, Marshall, William, Van, Sidney, Jane, and Marinda. John owned a quarter section to the east of Job. He was a well known and thrifty farmer. Of his children there were Joel, Lewis, Harrison, John, Mary, Marinda, Lucinda and Eliza Jane, well known citizens. Vincet G. owned a quarter section adjoining Alexander Brandon his cousin, afterwards the Dr. Williamson farm. Of his family there were Robison, John H., Levi, Huldah, Hannah, Mary Jane, and Lydia. He with his children were well known citizens.
Walter and James Brandon, sons of Uncle "Watty" owned lands to the west of Vincent their uncle, James on the north and Walter on the south side of the east branch of Swamp creek. Of Walter's family there were Xury, Squire, Lavina, Julia Ann, and Margaret. Of old Uncle Jimmy's family (for he lived to a ripe old age, while Walter died in the earlier years) there were David, John, Jane, Elizabeth, Ailsie, and Martha. Old Uncle Jimmy was a well known and active citizen, and all these children became citizens well known.
James Brandon, father of Rev. T. A. Brandon, who was an able and distinguished preacher and evangelist of the Christian denomination, owned a quarter section east of his relative John, and sixty acres on the south of it and east of Ward's. He had a family of thirteen children, among them were Alexander Brooks, Thomas, and Mrs. Job Shaffer well known in this community. His sister, Elizabeth, lived with him. but marrying Aaron Carson, he became owner of sixty acres in the northwest corner of the named quarter section and known as the Carson farm. Of this marriage there was no issue. Carson then married Mrs. Amelia Spencer. Of their children there were Aaron and Elizabeth, and Aunt Milly's James and Charles, of the family. This was an estimable family well rememhered. Brandon in early years traded his remaining quarter section, now owned by Washington and his son, Joseph Long, to Washington's father, Stephen Long of the Stillwater settlement adjacent to Pleasant Hill, Miami county for one-half of a quarter section there. Hence the retiring of this Brandon family and the appearing of Long's. Of this latter family there were Washington, Albert, Stephen, John, Samuel*, Rachel Jane, Sarah Ann, Mary Elizabeth. These remained in the vicinity and of them there is a goodly progeny well known.
Relative to the Aaron Carson farm later and reliable information tells us, the first occupant was Peter Radabaugh, but whether he had a Sheep-skin deed or a Squatter's right to the land, the writer cannot determine, perhaps the latter for it is said from his lone cabin could be seen the camp fires of the roaming, semi-civilized Indians. He afterwards purchased lands beyond Stillwater, southward where the family well known, was reared. Of the children were William. John, Joseph, and eight sisters, which was a good providence to the older Swamp creek boys as some of them chose them for their wives of whom were Modest Taylor and Robinet Brandon, all of whom were well known in the time of which we write, and Joseph with his family the years onward. There is a number of the lineage in this community.
Alexander Brandon, brother of James, owned a quartcr section tipping James on the northeast and east of Henry Swisher. He had no children, but reared, Richard, who became the Rev. Richard Brandon, a local pastor and revival preacher in the Christian denomination in the earlier years. Lavina Brandon (wife of Rev. A. Long) and Mary Jane Reed (Mrs. Zachariah Hoel). He sold a part of this quarter section to Samuel English and the remainder to John Marchal, a French immigrant, and purchased Mr. Finkbone's farm west of Vincent Brandon and adjacent to Jacksonville, and there lived for many years as old Uncle Alexander, and the leading church deacon. Allen Reed owned a homestead south of and adjoining the farms whereon was Jacksonville village. He was long a well known citizen. Of his family, there was Isaac, Thomas, James, John, Allen, Finley, William, Margaret, Mary, Sally, and Huldah, and his second wife's girls, Harriet and Mariah. They were all well known citizens of the period we write. A most thrilling incident, occurred as Mr. Reed was crossing Stillwater on his coming. The stream was much swollen but he was told it was fordable. No sooner had he driven into the river than his horses had to swim to stem the flood, and the wagon in which were the wife and five children were well submerged in the water. A resident on the bank seeing the catastrophe, mounted his black steed, an excellent swimmer, came to the rescue, and by swimming around from side to side of the team kept them in line for the shore. Our informant says the heart-rending sighs of that mother is vivid and distinct yet in memory, and that in the short stop near the shallow shore, the father in the excitement, carried every member of the family ashore.

Aaron married (2) Amelia "Milla" SPENCER in 1834 in Miami, Ohio. Amelia was born about 1796 in South Carolina.

They had the following children:

+ 291 M i Aaron CARSON Jr.
292 F ii Elizabeth CARSON was born about 1840 in Ohio.

183. Hester Polly CARSON (John , Adam ? , Jonathan , Henry Aaron , George William , John Aaron ) was born before 1794.

  295 F i Mary A. DOUBLEDAY was born about 1833 in Illinois.

Rebecca married (2) David NEWELL in 1833 in Edgar, Illinois. David was born about 1809 in Kentucky. He died after 1860 in of Hancock, Illinois.

Message Board:
David Newell married ca. 1833 to a widow, Rebecca Doubleday, probably in Illinois (where in IL?) Her maiden name was Rebecca Carson. Rebecca Carson's first marriage was to Appleton Doubleday. Appleton and Rebecca Doubleday had one known child: Mary A. Doubleday, b. circa 1832 in Illinois (where in IL?)
Rebecca died between FEB 1848 and OCT 1850. David Newell, may have married second to Mrs. Emaranda SMITH 10 MAR 1849 in Monroe, Co. Iowa. (I am not certain that this was the same David Newell.) If it was the same David Newell, Emaranda must have died soon after, because David Newell married 10 MAR 1851 to Katharine POSE in Davis County, IA. David and Katharine moved to Hancock Co. Illinois. David Newell, 58, and Catharine, 45, are listed on the 1860 Census for Hancock Co. IL with two of his sons, Lafayette, 17, and James, 14, living with them.

Margaret Ellis's parents were in Washington, PA in 1790. That is where the family of John Linn Carson was. His brother, David Carson, had a son David born 1780. It is possible this was the David who married Margaret Ellis. Also, Joseph Carson b. 1812 was the 1st cousin of this David and he was in Rochester, Andrew, MO in 1850 along with Henry Carson and Rebecca Fowler. This would make two marriages between the same Fowler family line and the same Carson family line.....

Rebecca FOWLER was the aunt of Benjamin Nicholas FOWLER who m. Nancy A. Carson (b. ca 1814).
Rebecca FOWLER married Henry Carson (b. 1802/09) who may have been Nancy's brother.
Henry CARSON and Joseph CARSON were possibly 1st cousins.

Subject: [OHBUTLER-L] Benjamin Fowler
I am searching for information on my Benjamin Fowler, born Ireland or
England (?), married Mary Nailor, and had a daughter Rebecca born 1807 in KY.
He may have been in Madison KY from the tax lists there in the early
1800's, along with James and Jeremiah Fowler. All three later show up in
Butler OH, where Rebecca married Henry Carson in 1829. Henry moved to
Preble OH in 1830, and I lose track of Benjamin. He bought land in
Marion IN, Owen IN and Muskingum OH. Henry lived in Marion IN in 1840
census, then moved to Andrew MO.
Henry Carson was son of David Carson and Margaret Ellis, also of Butler
OH and perhaps Hamilton OH, too.
If anyone could help me on these folks, I would really appreciate it.

Email from Nich Spudich:
I have a copy of a hand written chart that was the work of Dorothea Lindsey, the daughter of Ruby Lindsey. It shows that Benjamin married Nancy Ann Carson, now Ann may really be Hanah I don't know. Some where I had a note that showed that Benjamin married a Bell Carson, I don't know if this is Nancy sister or what? Nancy died when Benjamin was about 51 so it is possible that he remarried.
Darcy (Clogston) Kull took some of my data and did some looking and came up with some stuff that went way back but I an not sure how well she checked the data.

Family group sheets show her name as "Hanah"

Since Ben and Nancy named their first son David, it would make sense that her father's name was David, however, it has not been proven that David Carson was her father.

Although it has been passed down through the family that Nancy was related to Kit Carson, no connection has been found. Kit Carson's family lived in North Carolina, Kentucky and Howard County Missouri and, as far as I can tell, only one member of that family was in Butler Co, OH - Joseph Harvey Linn Carson was there in 1803 - his son Abner was born in Butler, OH in 1803. Abner was found in the 1830 census living in Union, Butler, OH. Joseph, his father, was not there, but a Joseph Carson was found in Wheeling, Belmont, OH, and he was the right age and had 2 unidentified females age 15-20 in his household. One of them could have been Nancy. Joseph's first wife, Mary Henderson, died before 1805 and Joseph remarried to Mary Leonard. Joseph and Mary Henderson had a daughter Nancy born in 1801 - she married Morgan Roop. Therefore, he has been ruled out as the possible father of our Nancy because it is unlikely that he would name another daughter "Nancy". Joseph Harvey Linn Carson did have a brother named William who was born Aug 6, 1785 in Bedford, Virginia. No information is known about him and there were several William Carsons in Butler Co, OH at the time of Nancy's birth and marriage. It is possible that Nancy was the daughter of Joseph's brother William, but there were too many William Carsons in the census records to determine which one he might be - if at all. It's also possible that her father was related to Joseph and died before her marriage - she may have been one of those unidentified 15-20 year-old females in his household in 1830 - about 4 yrs before her marriage.

We know that Clara Lucille Fowler (Benjamin's gr-daughter) married Ira Lee Branson in Taos, New Mexico, the home of Kit Carson, in 1898. Living there in 1900 was the family of Henry Smith Stevens who was married to Benjamin Fowler's daughter, Hannah Ann Fowler.

Another coincidence has recently been discovered. In 1850 Kit Carson's older brother, Robert, was living in Sonoma County, California. In 1860 Kit's younger brother, Lindsey, was living in Healdsburg, Sonoma County, California and so was Robert. They and their descendants remained in that general are until at least 1880 and some of them probably beyond 1900. This is where Ira and Clara Branson settled and lived for many years. Ira Lee Branson, became the County Roadmaster for that county between 1910 and 1914. Kit Carson's relatives circulated in Missouri, New Mexico and Colorado prior to the 1900's and so did the Fowlers, the Bransons and the Stevens. We simply don't know if there was some connection - other than perhaps a friendship between these families. The fact that Clara Fowler was married in Taos, NM where Kit Carson was reknowned, lived in Colorado where he circulated - and the fact that two of his brothers were in Sonoma County, California before Ira and Clara moved there - may add up to just a huge coincidence - or not! Ira played a role in making improvements to offshoots of the Sante Fe Trail prior to 1910. This trail was used extensively by travelers going south.

Subject: CARSON'S OF BUTLER CO., OH.
Hi: I read your query on the Carson's of Butler Co., Ohio. My GGGrandmother was Elmira Carson, born 3 Mar 1817, in Butler Co., Ohio. I think she was the daughter of William Carson. Elmira married John Henry Welch on 28 May 1836 in Newtown, Fountain Co., Indiana. Living close to John's father was a William Carson, 1830 Census, in Montgomery Co., Indiana. When Elmira died, 18 Apr 1882, in McPherson Co., Kansas, the obituary said she had four living sisters. I never knew who any of her brothers or sisters were. Could this possibly be any of your family line? Charlie of Illinois

NOTE: some databases show Elmira's birth place as KY

Elmira married John Henry ? WELCH son of Thomas Henry WELCH and Elizabeth (Caty) JACOBS on 28 May 1836 in Newton, Fountain Co, Indiana. John was born on 6 Aug 1814 in Brown Co, Ohio. He died about 1887.
