John Wesley Smallwood
1923 - 2004
John Wesley Smallwood 80, of Kelso, passed away January 6, 2004 in Longview. He
was born on December 4, 1923 in Montserat, Missouri, to Ruth (DeVore) and Grover
Smallwood. He moved to Kelso in 1943, where he lived for 60 years.
He married Audrey Rasmussen in Kelso on December 30, 1945. He worked as a truck
driver for Armour Meat Co. in Kansas City, Missouri before going into the U.S.
Army. After he moved to Kelso he went to work for Reynolds Metal Co. as a crane
operator. He retired from there in 1980 after 37 years of service.
Mr. Smallwood was a member of Community of Christ Church and the AWIU Local #
305.
He enjoyed playing the guitar and mandolin, hunting, fishing and woodworking. He
also enjoyed singing, which he sometimes did at the Lexington Grange. He was
very outgoing and loved by everyone he knew. He never met a stranger. He loved
it when his friends and family, especially his grandchildren and
great-grandchildren, would come to visit. Mr. Smallwood was also very close to
his other family at Cowlitz Care and Park Royal Nursing Homes.
Mr. Smallwood was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey; sister, Fanny; and
brothers Paul and George.
He is survived by son, Grover Smallwood of Longview; two sons and
daughters-in-law, Jim and Kay Smallwood of Wasila, Alaska and David and Laura
Smallwood of Kalama; two daughters, Christine Anderson of Olympia and Kathy
Whitmore of Kelso; three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and John Lavey of
Longview, Deanna and Dave Malone and Karen and Dan Twiss all of Kelso; sister,
Alberta Thompson of Kansas City, Missouri; two brothers-in law and
sisters-in-law, Dale and Shirley Rasmussen of Kelso, Dick and Katherine See of
Auburn, Wash; two brothers-in-law, Dick Stange of Kelso and Oliver Christianson
of Longview; fourteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; along with
numerous nieces and nephews.
Viewing will be on Friday from 12-5, Saturday from 10-4 and Monday from 10 until
the service at Steele Chapel. A Funeral Service will be held Monday, January 12,
2004 at 2:00 p.m. at Steele Chapel with Elder Ken Madsen and Elder Dale
Rasmussen officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association of
Washington, 2625 Third Ave., Seattle, WA 98121.
Dahl-McVicker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
