Nina Lindsey, Paternal Grandmother,Tracyton, WA., 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT On Thursday, 27 Feb. 1968 the following appeared on the front page of the Bremerton Sun Newsp 2 CONC aper- Tracyton Youth Killed: A 13-year-old Central Kitsap Junior High School student was acc 2 CONC idently shot to death by a friend yesterday afternoon, Kitsap Sheriff's Department detective 2 CONC s said. 2 CONT The victim, Micheal James Lindsey, was dead on arrival at Harrison Memorial Hospital. H 2 CONC e was the son of Alfred J. and Sylvia Lindsey ofTracyton. 2 CONT Kitsap County detectives said the Lindsey boy was shot by a friend,Charles E. Russell, 17 2 CONC , also of Tracyton, who pulled the trigger of a gun he believed was not loaded. 2 CONT The hospital said Lindsey died of internal bleeding caused when the bullet passed throug 2 CONC h his liver and severed the abdominal aorta. 2 CONT Detectives quoting young Russell gave this version of events leading up to the shooting. 2 CONT The two boys had just returned home from school. They ate pieces of pie in the kitchen o 2 CONC f the Lindsey home. Lindsey was getting some cheese out of the refrigerator when Russell not 2 CONC iced a .22 calibre rifle on the porch. To surprise Lindsey, he got the rifle and pointed i 2 CONC t at him through the crack between the refrigerator and the open door. Russell's hand hit th 2 CONC e trigger and the gun discharged. 2 CONT Detectives said there was no trigger guard on the loaded, single shot weapon. The Russel 2 CONC l boy attempted to phone for help, but found the line busy. He then ran across the road to t 2 CONC he Tracyton store and told the proprietor that he had shot Lindsey. The Silverdale ambulanc 2 CONC e was called. 2 CONT First call to the ambulance was placed shortly before 3:45 p.m. The boy was declared dea 2 CONC d on arrival on the hospital half an hour later. 2 CONT The bullet hit the deceased just below the rib cage and passed through the body. The Lin 2 CONC dsey boy was in the seventh grade at the Central Kitsap Junior High School. he was born on 2 2 CONC 1 June 1954 in Bremerton. The structure was not b 2 CONC eing used as a hotel at thetime. 2 CONT Eva Colvin, third daughter of the Lindseys recalls that there was afeedstore on the doc 2 CONC k and a barber shop and the boat stopped three timesa day. There was a boardwalk from the fo 2 CONC ot of the hill (where the boatramp is now) all the way to the top of the hill. A wooden brid 2 CONC ge crossedthe little creek at the crossroads by the Joe Sackman place the hotelproperty. 2 CONT At the time there were few streets in Tracyton and the town consistedof the post office an 2 CONC d the E.E. Riddell's store. 2 CONT The only way to get back and forth to PSNS was by boat. Althoughthere was a very narrow r 2 CONC oad from Tracyton to Manette and there one tookthe shuttle ferry owned by Harry and Alvin Han 2 CONC sen. 2 CONT Mrs. Colvin recalls that stores began to spring up in 1928 with onelarge store in the Walt 2 CONC er Deathridge home and built later at the cornerat the cross roads. By that time the wagon tr 2 CONC ail roads had widened andmore cars were coming into the area. 2 CONT A grange hall at the shore end of the dock burned and the presentgarage was built. (This i 2 CONC s now known as the community hall.) Katie andHerbert Brookman owned the second store (wher 2 CONC e the tavern is) Mrs.Edwards built the store now stored by Grakeys.
