FOWLER MESSAGE BOARD: Richard F. Fowler (1799-1859) was son of Joshua Fowler, Sr. (1759-1839) and Amelia Finley (1767-1839). Amelia's father was Richard Finley. Joshua Fowler was born abt 1759 in Anne Arundel County, MD to John Fowler, Sr. (1736-1815)and Susannah Unknown. John Fowler, Sr. was born in Ireland. My line descends from Richard's brother Rezin Davis Fowler. I assume that Richard's middle name was Finley and so were probably his sons Samuel and Joshua. Do you know their middle names for certain? Interested in comparing Fowler notes. LynnL53@plmw.com I had him in my database from long ago and didn't even realize it. John's children were in my database as follows:
Caleb, John, Reason, Nehemiah, Isaac, Joshua (1759), Ruth, Elizabeth, Nancy, Sophia and Sarah
Ruth married Doctor Lewellen
Joshua married Amelia Finley
Caleb married Lydia Conn
Caleb had a son John C. Fowler (b. Feb 24 1772 Fayette, PA) who married Martha Lewellen. They had a son Caleb Fowler b. Apr 14, 1821. He married Agnes Gans, etc. etc. etc.
John C. Fowler died in Monongalia, Wv

Email from Marcia:
John D. Fowler had an older brother, Joshua Fowler, who was born 1760 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, to John Fowler (which means a John Fowler was married in Maryland before 1760; I have yet to find that record). He served in the American Revolution in early 1781, having been drafted from Washington County, Maryland. He served three months under Capt. Leonard Bilmore, 1st Lt. James Patterson, and 2nd Lt. John Fowler, his father. After the war he moved from Washington County, Maryland, to the west part of Pennsylvania on the Monogahala River where he married Amelia Fenley, daughter of Richard Fenley. Shortly after marriage he and Amelia moved to Jefferson County, Kentucky. He was listed on the Tax Rolls of Jefferson County, Kentucky, beginning in 1789 through 1817 with the exceptions of 1798 and 1811. He did not buy any land in Jefferson County, but he owned property, mainly animals, and beginning in 1795 he owned some slaves. He moved across the Ohio River in 1817, where he bought land and resided in Floyd County, IN, until his death. On 13 November 1832 he made application for benefits from his war service. At that time he was 73 years old. He died 26 March 1839 intestate. The order for the administration of his estate appears in Floyd County, IN, Probate Order Book 1838-1847, p. 77. It names John Thompson as the administrator (his son-in-law). Joshua Fowler is buried in an old section of Fairview Cemetery in New Albany, IN. His grave is marked as the grave of a Revolutionary War Patriot. (Most of this is taken from Joshua Fowler's Pension Records, the land record in Floyd County, IN, and an abstract of the probate record.)

It is not known if John D. Fowler was the son of John Fowler and Susannah. Since they had a son Caleb born about six months prior to John's birth, it is possible that he was not part of this family. However, dates could be wrong for births.

Email from Marcia:
I have told you that I have been unable to prove the children of John D. Fowler. My information came from the familysearch.com website. I communicated with the submitter of this information to the website. This was the reply I got from Brent McClean: "When I was 19, a long time ago, I was visiting my Grandfather McClean in Oklahoma who was in his 80's. He was married to Leta Inez Fowler who had passed away several years earlier. I was talking to Grandpa about family history. He got out some family Bibles. One of them was from the Fowler side. I decided to go through it. As I went through page by page, I found an old paper folded in II Samuel. I opened it up and found family history on the Fowler side going back to John Fowler and his son Joshua D. It was very old. It started with Grandma's grandparents as I recall. I took notes and my mother checked my work. This part of the Fowler family was from Missouri . . Knox County. They are still there farming land that has been in the family since the late 1800's. They are strong and respected in that county, especially the town of Novelty. I have many other lines that I have spent many years researching to no avail. Every now and then a miracle occurs. like this one." The following is what I received from him.

Sandra,

Joshua D. Fowler's presumed brothers were John D. Fowler, Jr., Fenwick T., Rezin Thomas, S. F., Jonathan, William G., all sons of John D. Fowler of Brown County, Ohio, who died in Brown County in 1823. Joshua D. Fowler was married and in Butler County, Ohio, in the 1820 Census, but was in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, by 1830. I do not have the names of James Augustine Fowler or Benjamin Nicholas Fowler in any of my names. Joshua D. Fowler did have a son, named James Riley Fowler, who was born in Ohio, probably Butler County, circa 1821. There were lots of Fowlers in Ohio in the early 1800's. Lots of them started in northeastern Ohio. I don't see a connection between these names but we may still be connected. I think my Fowlers moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in the 1700's, where Joshua D. Fowler was born in 1793. There are also Fowlers that came out of Connecticut. Good luck!

JUSTICES OF THE PEACE BROWN COUNTY OHIO 1818-1850
John D. Fowler, Byrd Twp

OHgenweb - Franklin Twp, Brown, OH
In the Township Clerk's books there is no account of the election held at the house of Henry Dunn in January, 1823, but we find that John McBeath, Jacob Pindell and John Lindsey were elected Trustees, and Hezekiah Lindsey, Township Clerk. March 3, 1823, the Trustees met and agreed that the next election for township officers should be held at the house of Jacob Springer, on the first Monday of April next. At this meeting, they selected for Grand Jurors, Phillip Lindsey, Enoch Laycock, Henry Dunn and David Thorp; for Petit Jurors, Gabriel Pindell, James Jacobs and Andrew Moore; and laid off four road districts. On April 26, the additional part of the township was divided into two districts, making Shotpouch Run the dividing line. At this meeting, the schoolhouse near John Lindsey's was selected for holding the elections for the township. This schoolhouse stood about where West Fork Church now stands. The Supervisors for the several road districts were John Fowler, Richard Hewitt, Ezekiel Roddy, John Bunner, James McFadden and Lemuel Monahan. On Monday, March 1, 1824, at a meeting of the Trustees, they settled with the Supervisors, James McFadden reporting that all hands in his district had worked, but made no charge for his services; the others were allowed $1.50 for their services, except Ezekiel Roddy, John Bunner and Richard Hewitt; they reported that all hands had worked in their respective districts except one day in each; they was deducted from their allowance, and an order for 50 cents was drawn.

Note:
[Westbrook.FTW]
John entered service in 1777, was commissioned First Lieut. in Capt. Patterson's Company, Col. Robert Goode's Virginia Regiment, and so served until 1783. In a skirmish near Manchester, Va, he was severely wounded on the head by a broadsword thrust and was taken prisoner and paroled a few days later. It is stated that he was introduced previous to his capture to General Lafayette, who had much confidence in him as a partisan officer and that he was selected by him to accompany his Aide, Major Langburn, within the enemy's lines. On this occasion they were both taken prisoner.
In 1783, immediately following the Revolutionary War, John Fowler went to Kentucky where he was granted land for his services in the conflict. He had 14,257 acres in old Ky grants and other grants amounting to three times that much. On his trips back to Va, he was entrusted with many dispatches and other public documents. He was elected to Congress in 1797 and served until 1807; was postmaster of Lexington, Ky, from 1814 to 1822. He supported the first Agricultural Fair as Director in 1816 and was also owner of "Fowler Gardens", a large body of land which was landscaped and equipped with buildings where fairs and all kinds of entertainment were held for many years.
In 1802 he deeded 93 acres to Concord Presbyterian Church near Carlisle, Ky. In 1803 he was commissioned by the State of Va to bring back to Ky a sword which was given Jack Jouette by the State of Va for his famous ride.
After having served in many places of honor and trust, John Fowler , a greatly beloved and respected citizen of Lexington, died Aug 22, 1840 at the advance age of 85. Capt. Fowler was one of the best types of true old Va Gentlemen and was noted for his mental culture, generosity and gentleness. A large procession of military, firemen, benevolent orders and citizens followed him to his last resting place in Old Episcopal Cemetery. (Gazette, Rancke's History)
