Family Notes from Ronald James Lindsey - "His great grandfather was HughM. Lindsey b. est. 1825-1830, Unknown place, resided, Galesburg, IL ??,m. Elizabeth J. Deal, 15 Nov 1855, in Knox Co. IL. This family moved into Archuleta Co. COL.,San Diego, CA., Medford, OR, and then into Tracyton, WA, in 1919. Ihave most of this family traced out around Tracyton, WA. The secondknown son, L. L. Lindsey, was recorded in Samuel's obituary in 1946."

An Old Resident Gone_ This community was called up[on the past week themourn the death of one of its oldest and long time residents, in theperson of Mrs. Elizabeth J. Deal Lindsey, whose death occurred on lastFriday at the Lindsey homestead southwest of Conway.
Mr. and Mrs. H.M. Lindsey have been long residents of this vicinity, having come to this County in the early days had had much to do in theshaping of the wild prairie land of this part of the people who now liveat ease in splendid form homes in close proximity with each other vastlydifferent from what it was when Mrs. Lindsey landed here in the spring of1866. The Lindsey home was one of hospitality and Mrs. Lindsey alwayshad a cheery word for the visitors who entered her home.
For a few years past Mrs. Lindsey has been in poor health and wasconfined to her home the greater part of the time.
Elizabeth J. Deal was born in Chambersbury, PA of the 16th of March,1830. She resided at that place until she grew to young womanhood, whenshe with her parents moved to Knoxville, ILL. She was there united inmarriage to Hugh M. Lindsey in 1854, to this union were born sevenchildren, three of whom survive their mother. They are Mary F. Morgan,of near Conway, with whom she has made her home, N.S. Lindsey ofTraceytown, WA., Leonard L. Lindsey of Chestnutville, MO.
Mrs. Lindsey moved with her father from Illinois to Iowa in the springof 1855, and lived at the old home place all these years until deathremoved her hence.
Mrs. Lindsey never united with any church but brought up her childrenin the Christian faith and taught them to be true men and women in everysense of the word. She was always ready and willing to help those whowere distress. She lived a good useful life and passes away 10 Sept.1920, aged 90 yrs, 05 months, and 24 day.
She leaves to mourn her departure three children as mentioned, 16grandchildren, 07 great grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. S.F. Rogers ofGrand Junction, COLO., and Mrs. M.A. Evans of Chambersbury, PA, and ahost of friends.
Funeral services were held at the family home on Tuesday afternoon andshe was laid to rest in the family lot in the Lexington Cem. - The TimesRepublican Bedford Taylor Co. Iowa, Thursday, 16 Sept. 1920

Notes from Lucy Wattle regarding the Lindsey and Deal Family residing inKnox Co. IL.
On April 25 I sent a packet of information to Ron. That included a copy of the estate papers for Francis Deal's estate.. 1863 Hugh Lindseywas made administrator of his father-in-law, Francis Deal.
Knox Co. IL. No resident information on Hugh Lindsey.
On those estate papers, Elizabeth got everything. I think the valueof the estate was about $400. They sold a land warrant for $166 andElizabeth got that. I don't know why it went to Elizabeth. It waslisted as a claim against the estate. Hugh was in Knox County for the March term, 1866, Knox County Circuit Court, when it appears the estatewas closed.
Neither Hugh or Elizabeth are buried with the family in the KnoxvilleCemetery, unless they did not have stones. There are stones for the restof the family including "Little Willie" Lindsey. As I remember, they hada plot that was kind of marked off. It was under a large tree.

The Deal land does not show on this map Possibly it was in the city ofKnoxville. They still owned it when the estate was settled in 1863 HughM. Lindsey was the Administrator of the estate. For some reason onlyElizabeth Lindsey received a share of the estate. It does not say whathappened to the property, only that the family is living there Maybe theothers were to eventually get a share of it. I sent Ron a copy of thesepapers.

50. Gertrude Vandike Rice DEAL (Francis DEAL , Peter DEAL , Francis , Peter , John ) was born on 24 Mar 1842. She died on 10 Apr 1907.

At the time of the death of Francis Deal, Gertrude was not married. Ihave found her in the 1880 census and her name was Kennedy, not Kennerlyas it appears in the Deal family Bible. I believe I misinterpreted thehandwriting in the Bible. Page 230 of the 1880 census for Knox Townshipgives the following listing:

KENNEDY
William E. 37, farmer, born Illinois, both parents born New York
Gertrude, 38, wife, keeps house, born PA, both parents born PA
Kitty W., 11, daughter, born Illinois, father born Illinois, mother bornPA
Frank J., 5, son, born Illinois, father born Illinois, mother born PA
Mary E., 4, daughter, at home, born Illinois, father born Illinois, mother born PA
LINDLEY
Samuel M., 20, nephew, farm laborer, born Illinois, both parents born OH

I believe this is Samuel Lindsey, son of Hugh and Elizabeth Lindsey.

Gertrude married William E. KENNEDY on 13 Sep 1866 in Knox Co, Il. William was born about 1843 in Il.

They had the following children:

  64 F i Kitty W. KENNEDY 1 was born 2 about 1869.
  65 M ii Frank J. KENNEDY 1 was born 2 about 1875.
  66 F iii Mary E. KENNEDY 1 was born 2 about 1876.

51. Sarah Francis DEAL (Francis DEAL , Peter DEAL , Francis , Peter , John ) was born on 22 Feb 1845. She died on 28 Jun 1938 in Peever, Roberts, Sd.

In his book, Forrest Rogers tells of a couple of visits to see hisgrandmother in Grand Junction, Colorado, where she lived with herdaughter, Kate, in 1933.
Charles Rogers was my grandfather. The Rogers were all members of theKnoxville Presbyterian Church. I kind of think the Deals were, too, butdon't know for sure. -- Lucille Wattles-

Mrs. Sarah Rogers Dies in Minnesota - Mrs. Sarah Frances Rogers, 93, aformer resident of Knoxville, died Tuesday afternoon in the home of herdaughter, Mrs. Ben Gardner at Brown's Valley, Minn.
Her husband preceded her in death and besides Mrs. Gardner there are adaughter and a son surviving, Mrs. Pete McCabe of Grand Junction, Colo.,and Charles Rogers of Knoxville.
The funeral will be held in Knoxville at the Presbyterian Church,Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment will be in the KnoxvilleCemetery.
The Daily Register Mail, Galesburg, Ill., Wednesday, June 29, 1938.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am sure Sarah was the last of her family. She was the baby, born in1845
and died in 1938. Elizabeth was born in 1830. I know that Gertude diedin
1907 but do not know where. That is in the Bible. I don't think shedied in
Knox County. - Lucy Wattles Notes

Sarah married James Phillips ROGERS on 22 Feb 1866 in Monmouth, Warren, Il. James was born on 19 Jun 1842 in Warner Twp., Trumbull, Oh. He died on 4 Oct 1906 in Williamsfield, Knox, Il.

His obituary says: JamesPhillips Rogers was born in Warner, Trumball Co., Ohio, June 19th, 1842,was the third son of Charles and Eliza Rogers, and moved with his parentsto Knoxville, Ill., in 1844 and has resided, at or near Knoxville all hislife, with the exception of 14 years that he lived in Hancock County,Ill., and at Keokuk, Iowa.

He was married to Sarah Francis Deal of Knoxville, February 22nd, 1866.There was born to them five children, two having died in infancy leavingto mourn his loss a wife, two daughters, and a son: Mrs. Kate McCabe ofPleasant Grove, Utah; Mrs. Nelle Gardner, of Williamsfield, Illinois;Charles H. G. Charles and Henry Rogers both ofKnoxville.

He served as Private in Company E, 138th Illinois Inf., in the CivilWar." James Wilkes served in Co. B of this same group.

This says that only two babies died. However, all three of these babiesare buried with James P. and Sarah F. Deal Rogers. This makes it appearthat all three are their children. There are no dates for Bessie, only"Infant."

James and Sarah had the following children:

  67 F i Bessie ROGERS
