Descendants of William COLE I

Twenty-second Generation

(Continued)

103. Elijah COLE (Ezekiel , Thomas , Christopher , Thomas , John , John , William , Humphrey , William , William , Thomas , John , William , John , John , William , John , John , Roger , Roger , William ) was born on 2 Aug 1843 in Richmond, Jefferson Co., OH . He died on 13 Jan 1936 in Richmond, OH .

"He then engaged in the grocery business three months at the corner of Fourth and Sycamore Streets, Cincinnati, and afterward came home, and some time subsequently was married and went west, but not long afterward returned to Richmond, which has since been his home. He engaged in the pottery business three or four years and then purchased the Cole House, of Richmond, a hotel which he conducted quite successfully for 21 years. After disposing of this hotel he engaged in the creamery business some time and then in huckstering."

According to the 1880 census, Elijah was a 37 year old pottery worker in East Liverpool, Columbiana Co., Ohio. With him was his wife Ellen, 35 and his children: Glendora age 14 who was "at home;" Sheridan, age 12 who was "at school;" Charles, age 10 and Annie, age 7.

According to the 1910 census, Elijah was a 66 year old salesman of fruit trees living in Richmond, Salem Township, Jefferson County, Ohio. Living with him was his wife, Anna, age 47. His sons, John, age 25 and Hayes, age 20 were living [or visiting] with their uncle, Charles D. Roberts.
The Civil War broke out while Elijah was on the road and so he served three months with the First Virginia Volunteers and 10 months with the 52nd and the 71st Ohio Regiments. He enlisted with the former May 18, 1861 in Wellsburg and was involved in the battle of Phillippi*. "While at Phillippi he received from Richmond people, a box containing pie, cake, [and] chicken." The "soldier boys" were so hungry that they ate it even though it was moldy. It, of course, made them sick. He was discharged at Wheeling Island, August 28, 1861 maybe for injuries but more likely because his three months enlistment was up. He enlisted in Co. G., 52 Ohio at Camp Dennison on Dec. 10, 1861. In January of 1862 the regiment was disbanded. He was then transferred to Co. K., 71 Ohio, a regiment organized at Camp Dennison by Capt. Thomas W. Brown. He was injured in the back and hips at Pittsburgh landing. He went to the Evansville, Indiana hospital for treatment then home on a furlough. He returned to Camp Dennison to be discharged Sept. 10, 1862 for disability. *"On one of two main routes through difficult mountainous terrain, Philippi was the scene of a minor skirmish [June 3, 1861]when invading Federals, who had traveled through a rainy night, completely surprised and routed the Confederate garrison. The Confederates speedy departure was headlined by the Northern press, which gleefully called the incident 'the Philippi Races.'"

Occupation: a lawyer 1904 Massillon, Ohio
Census: 21 JUN 1880 SD 8, ED 148, Page 213B, Handwritten 46, Line 47 Dwelling 396, Family 432, Massillon, Stark Co., OH

According to the 1880 census, Leander was a 33 year old lawyer and the mayor of Massillon living on Prospect Street. With him was his wife, Mary J., age 28, and a unnamed two month old son [whom they will later name Thomas].

L. C. was admitted to the bar in January of 1874 in [Massillon], Ohio, and began practicing law. Originally, the source had his admittance to the bar in Tifflin. However, he was the mayor of Massillon so I have replaced Tifflin with Massillon.
Between June 1874 and 1879, he was in a law partnership with Isaac Ulman. Since the 1880 census located him in Massillon, I changed the location in spite of the previous source. 2 3
Note:
Between 1875 and 1880, Leander was the [Massillon] city solicitor. The original source had Tifflin as the town. But the 1880 census puts him in Massillon, so no doubt he was the city solicitor of that city. 2 3
Note:
He was elected mayor of Massillon in 1880. In another part of this source, he was referred to as the mayor of Tifflin. The 1880 census supported the former.

Leander married Martha J. DAUGHERTY in Oct 1873 in Ohio.

They had the following children:

204 M i Thomas COLE was born in Apr 1880 in Massillon, Ohio.
