Georgia Marriage Records:
Akins, Nancy Broughton, William 04 Feb 1807 Georgia
Oglethorpe County

Email received 5/4/2004:
Dear Sandra,

I found the following marriage recorded in the Family Data Collection:

Name: Willoughby Broughton
Spouse: Nancy Akins
Marriage Date (Day, Month, Year): 4 February 1807
City: Oglethorpe County
State: GA

Here is info about this source (Family Data Collection):

These marriage records were created during a study about human genetics and disease. The millions of individual records were created from a variety of sources, including birth, marriage, and death records, obituaries, probate records, books of remembrance, family histories, genealogies, family group sheets, and more, but the documentation was not kept. Since genetics confirms relationships in a scientific way, researchers were not concerned with citing the source of every genealogical fact compiled.

These results have now been sorted into Birth, Marriage, and Death categories. Due to the lack of documentation, treat this information like a secondary source, but use it to record possible birth, marriage, and death dates and names, and other possible information that could be listed. Then, with the new names you may have collected, visit census records and vital records to confirm information and find clues to additional details.

Source Information:
Edmund West, comp. Family Data Collection - Marriages[database online] Provo, UT: Ancestry.com, 2001.

I've also written to a look-up volunteer in Oglethorpe Co., GA to see if she can find and copy the record from the marriage book.

Take care,
Kathy

Hi Sandra,

I am totally confused about the marriage in question. Here's info I found today:

From the WFT database of Andrea Faulkner, "William Broughton (Sr) was married to Nancy Akins and together they lived in the Morgan County, Georgia area in the mid 1800's. The couple had several children. Among them were: Ann Broughton, Lucinda Broughton, John A. Broughton, Nancy Broughton and Sophronia Broughton. Another daughter was named Caroline E. Broughton. She was born in Morgan County on October 18, 1814."

Also from Andrea Faulkner's WFT database, "William's wife Nancy would witness her daughter Caroline wedding, but not her son John's. Nancy died October 10, 1835. William Broughton passed away June 14, 1844. According to the book "Georgia Wills 1733-1860", William's will was filed in 1844 in Morgan County, Georgia and is recorded in Will Book C, Reference 87.
Caroline Broughton and her husband Clark Brewer migrated west, eventually settling in Wells, Cherokee County, Texas sometime around the year 1852. Caroline would live there the rest of her life. She died on November 6, 1879."

Per Gary Braughton, the will of Willoughby (William) Broughton (son of Willoughby and Elizabeth Christman) mentions two daughters, Caroline and Sofrony.

From the look-up volunteer:
In the Oglethorpe Co, GA Marriages From 1794-1850, p 8, This is how this marriage is abstracted.

Broughton, William marr Akins, Nancy 12/04/1807

The marriage register of course is the best way to be sure. The courthouse will copy and notarize the copy as coming from the courthouse for about $20. I would enter the name from the source you feel is the most reliable and enter the second name as an alternate in ones database. Both names may be his. Hope this helps you.

None of this information provides a definite answer about which William/Willougby was married to Nancy. I'll keep looking to see if I can find a marriage bond or other official document which may (but not likely) give additional information.

Thanks for pointing out this discrepancy.

Take care,
Kathy
