Col. John3 West, of "West Point," Va., born at "Bellefield,"Chyskiack, Va., 1633 (the firs t English child born on YorkRiver), died 1691, senior justice Colonial General Court; sat on court-marial which tried the rebels in Bacon's time; memberHouse of Burgesses; married Uni ty, daughter of Major JosephCroshaw [member House of Burgesses, 1659-'60; J. P.; major of militia, etc., etc.], of "Poplar Neck," York County, Va., and had:


In 1632 the Council of Virginia on 6 June 1632 took recognitionof his birth
and granted his father 2000 acres of land in honor of his birthas the "the
firstChristian child born on the York River". It is likelythat he was sent
to England for his education, returned to Virginia about 1651.At that time
his father Gov. John West made a claim for land for the entry ofhis wife and
and his only son, John West Jr., into the colony.
!John, Jr. is mentioned in various records as Captain in 1662,Major in 1667
and Lieutenant Colonel in 1673. He figured prominently inBacon's Rebellion
in 1676. In 1680 he was Senior Presiding Justice of the CountyCourt of New
Kent and Colonel commanding the militia of the county. He was amember of the
House of Burgesses 16-85-1688.


Col. John West, son of Col. John West, of Virginia, died in1689. John married Ursula (Unity ) Crowshaw of York County,Virginia.

Colonel John West of West Point, King William County, the son ofCol. John West was bor n in 1632. He was the first white childof English parents to be born on the York River. A la rge tractof land was granted to his father in honor of his birth. He wastaken prisoner duri ng Bacon's rebellion. As to what Bacon's mendid to him is not stated but as he later sot o n the courtmartial that tried the rebels he more than evened with them. Hewas Colonel of Mi litia and the Burgess
for New Kent County, 1685-1686. In the 1659-1660 session of theHouse of Burgesses, an act wa s passed exempting him from taxesfor life in consideration of the important favors and servi ceshe rendered to the country of Virginia by the noble family ofthe Wests, predecessors o f John West their now only survivor.His will dated November 15, 1689. He married Unity Crows haw,daughter of Maj. Joseph Croshaw, Burgess, 1659-60. The Westswere Tories.

He inherited 3/4 of the "Popular Neck Plantation" from hisfather-in-law Maj. Joseph Cr owshaw due to his brother-in-lawsdeath prior to reaching majority.
