John's land was on the north side of the Staunton River, nowknown as the Roanoke River, just across he river from the present-dayPittsylvania Co. John purchased 125 acres from the estates of RichardRandolph on 27 Sep, 1760, (Deed Book 1, page 351, Bedford)

He married twice: Catherine _____, then Ann. ______. He was living in Bedford County when it was established in 1754 and owned about 268 acres when his will was recorded. John, his oldest son, was executor and was to inherit after the death of Ann. Six of the remaining seven children received a shilling each; Joanna, who married Valentine Sevier, is not mentioned at all. Three of his four sons received the land they occupied, entailed to their heirs

In the Name of God, Amen, I William Hardcastle of the County of Johnston
and province of North Carolina being very sick but of perfect mind and
memory thanks be to God, therefore calling to mind the mortallity of my
body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and
ordain this my Last Will and Testament, that is to say principally and
first of all, I recommend my soul into the hands of God that give it and my
body I recommend to the earth to be buryed in a Christian like desent
buryal at the descretions of my executors and as touching such worldly
estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me with in this Life, I give
and dispose of the same in the following manner and form in promise I give
and bequeath unto my son John Hardcastle five shillings sterling; I give
and bequeath unto my son Elisha Hardcastle five shillings sterling; I give
and bequeath unto my daughter Casiah Baucom five shillings sterling; I give
and bequeath unto my daughter Betty Ad!
