John Goad (1700-1771) was born in Richmond County, Virginia. His older brother, and sister are mentioned in the will of their grandmother, Eve Smith. He married twice: Catherine _____, then Ann. ______. He was living in Bedford County when it was established in 1754 and owned about 268 acres when his will was recorded. John, his oldest son, was executor and was to inherit after the death of Ann. Six of the remaining seven children received a shilling each; Joanna, who married Valentine Sevier, is not mentioned at all. Three of his four sons received the land they occupied, entailed to their heirs

Transcription of Will:

In the Name of God, Amen, I William Hardcastle of the County of Johnston
and province of North Carolina being very sick but of perfect mind and
memory thanks be to God, therefore calling to mind the mortallity of my
body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and
ordain this my Last Will and Testament, that is to say principally and
first of all, I recommend my soul into the hands of God that give it and my
body I recommend to the earth to be buryed in a Christian like desent
buryal at the descretions of my executors and as touching such worldly
estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me with in this Life, I give
and dispose of the same in the following manner and form in promise I give
and bequeath unto my son John Hardcastle five shillings sterling; I give
and bequeath unto my son Elisha Hardcastle five shillings sterling; I give
and bequeath unto my daughter Casiah Baucom five shillings sterling; I give
and bequeath unto my daughter Betty Ad!
ams five shillings sterling. In promise I give and bequeath unto my son
James Hardcastle one rifel gun and one filly mare and all my waring close
and my carpenders tools and whip saw to be sold to discharge my lawfull
debts in promise I give and bequeath unto my dearly beloved wife Mary
Hardcastle all the rest of my moveable estate and plantation whereon I now
live during her life and widowhood and after her deseace or marriage all to
my son, James and I do hearby utterly disalow, reavoak and
disa...(illegible) all and every other former testaments, wills, legacies
and bequeaths and furthermore I do constatue and appoint my well beloved
wife Mary Hardcastle and my son James Hardcastle executors of this, my Last
Will and Testament, ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my
Last Will and Testament in witness whereof I have hearunto set my hand and
seal this 8 day of October 1776. Signed sealed and delivered in the
presents of us.
