120. Jonathan "John" SMALLWOOD was born on 2 Jan 1763 in of North Carolina. He died in 1812 in prob Surry Co, NC. He married Mary Indes "India" HOWARD in Surry Co, North Carolina. [Parents]

It is not proven that Jonathan was the father of Hezekiah Smallwood.  There is strong evidence to suggest that he may have been the son of Elijah Smallwood Jr. of Surry Co, North Carolina.  An extensive narrative is available for further review of the ongoing research.

1790 Surry Co NC Census:
Smallwood John 1 male over 16
1 male under 16
2 females (if they had Elizabeth and Mary, where is India? Perhaps Mary was Mary Elizabeth???)

Email to MA 6/24/2004:

Maybe our Hez was in NC before he married Eliz Broughton. We know the Elijahs were in Surry NC and Woodard Broughton was in Buncombe NC (1810). There was a Jonathan Smallwood in Surry NC in 1810 with two young males. It wouldn't be John the son of Smallwood/Philpot who were also there because that John was in Shelby KY in 1810. I can't find anything on Jonathan before or after 1810.

1810 Census Surry NC
Jonathan Smallwood (20010-10010) age 26 to 45 Pg 636
Elijah Smallwood Pg 658
William Smallwood (& Mary Grant) Pg 632

I found this marriage record:

North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868
Groom: Jonathan Smallwood
Bride: India Howard
Bond #: 000147422
ImageNum: 003896
County: Surry
Record #: 01 211
Bondsman: Stephen Ring

Since he was there the same time as Smallwood/Philpot he may be an unknown son of theirs who died young. I can't find anything on India Howard either. They may have been the parents of Hezekiah and maybe he was raised by a relative. I also can't find much on Stephen Ring. He married a Rachael Smallwood (b. 1775 NC) in Rowan Co NC but no info on her either. She may have been an unknown daughter of Smallwood/Philpot (they were in Rowan NC in 1800). She might also be a daughter of Wm. Smallwood/Eleanor Noland who were in Surry & Rowan NC (but that was later in 1810/1820). Rachael's husband Stephen Ring died in Aug 1816 and she was in Lebanon, Russell, VA in 1820 living next to Thomas Ring (age 18-26). He was her son. She died in 1850 in Russell, VA and never remarried. I found an Ann Ring living in Shelby KY in 1830. She was age 40-50. That's where Smallwood/Philpot's son Elijah was in 1830 and Smallwood/Philpot were in 1820. I have a feeling Rachael was a daughter of Smallwood/Philpot. There was a Lucius Ring living in Rockcastle Co Ky in 1850 - no idea who he is.

On India Howard: there were several Howard families in 1810 Surry NC but I can't find her in any databases. She probably went by another first name.

Anyway, if Jonathan was a son of Smallwood/Philpot and died before 1820 then his children may have been raised by a relative or India may have remarried and they could have been raised by someone with a different last name. If that's the case we won't find them in census records, but it could explain why Hezekiah seemed to appear suddenly in Knox Co KY in 1822. I'll keep searching in other areas.

Sandy

Email sent 6/29/2004:
After searching all the Smallwoods I could find in Kentucky I'm 90% sure that Hezekiah was a descendant of William Smallwood and Mary Grant. Their descendants were the only Smallwoods living near the Knox/Rockcastle/Clay Co KY area about the same time as Hezekiah - and their descendants were in Surry Co NC. Hezekiah was born in NC (probably). Their son Elijah Sr. (b. 1735/1740, married Sarah) had a son Jonathan "John" born Jan 2 1763. He died in 1812 probably in Surry Co NC. Jonathan married Mary Indes "India" Howard and they had a young male in the household in 1800, age 5-10. I know this is older than our Hezekiah was suppose to be but it could still be him. After Jonathan died India married Owen Ragan and they were in Knox Co in 1820 - close to the year that Hezekiah was married in Knox Co. Also in Knox Co were Jesse and Woodard Broughton. Hezekiah may have been living with Elijah Jr. in 1820. In the 1820 census there is a male age 16-18 who suddenly appears in Elijah Jr's household in Surry Co NC who wasn't there in 1810. Again, this age isn't exactly the age we think Hezekiah should have been in 1820 but it's very close - only 2 years off. In 1850 India (age 80 born in NC) was living in Whitley Co KY with a younger Owen Ragan - maybe a son. Whitley Co is very Close to Knox Co. In 1847 Hezekiah received a land grant in Rockcastle Co. In 1852 an E. Smallwood received a land grant in Rockcastle Co. I don't know who this was but there was another Elijah Smallwood in that area who was born in NC in abt 1809. This mysterious "E" Smallwood could also have been Elijah the son of John Smallwood and Francis Smith but he was in Clay Co in 1850 and 1860. I'm planning to do a lot more research on the Ragan family also.
There is a lot of circumstantial evidence to support this theory but I may not have thought of everything. Any help would be appreciated - if you think of something I may have missed.
Take care, Sandy

Email to Mary Ann (4/28/2004):
I'm still very curious about this land grant...it was issued only 3 years after Hezekiah's

OTHER LAND GRANTS TO SMALLWOODS IN ROCKCASTLE CO KY:
Patent #: 20128 Grantee: Smallwood, E.
Grant Book & Pg: 37 82 Acreage: 75
County: Rockcastle WaterCourse: Roundstone Cr.
Survey Name: Griffin, John Survey Date: 01/07/1852
Grant Date: 08/24/1852
Email from Mary Ann - As I was giving you the male "E" Smallwood names, I thought perhaps it was Elizabeth Smallwood (women's libber that I am), but I went to the papers on the Grant/Warrant/Survey (I did a lot of business with Brandi in the KY office) and it says HIS heirs, but no other clue as to who "E" might be!

It's probably a close relative of Hezekiah - possibly one of the Smallwoods in Clay Co. Found this:

Elija Smallwood Unknown Townships, Clay, KY 1840
Males: 0 0 0 0 1(20-30)
Females: 0 0 0 0 1(20-30) 0 0 1(50-60)
Next Door:
Sarah Smallwood Unknown Townships, Clay, KY 1840
Males: 2(0-5) 1(5-10)
Females: 0 0 0 0 1(20-30)

Another thought - the fact that Hezekiah named his oldest sons James and John - that might be significant (could be named for a brother or father). William Smallwood (father of Smallwood/Philpot) had sons named James, John and Elisha. His son James died 1783 in Frederick, VA but I have no info on his son John born 1732. Do you? Hezekiah could be a descendant of his.

Elisha Smallwood who married Tabitha Humphreys had sons named Elisha, William and Riley. I found a John Smallwood age 26-45 in Fayette Co KY in 1820 and a Humphreys family lived two doors away. This John may be a grandson of John born in 1732. He had one male child age 0-10 who could be Hezekiah and 2 females age 0-10 who could be Edy and Polly.

message board:
I have come to a small roadblock with my gggg-grandfather, George M. MOORE,
in Virginia, abt 1732. I have found his will, in North Carolina, 4 March
1817, Rutherford County. George had four children: Rececca, James C. (my
line), Joseph, and Lemuel. I believe he was born in Mecklenburg County,
Virginia. Marrying twice, George first married Martha and then Elizabeth. I
have find no information as to his wives surnames, nor where or when they
died.
