I was working on Corbins in Gwinnett County, Georgia, when I discovered that
Ira A. Corbin, b. abt 1805 in SC) was married to Jane Boyd, (b. abt 1800 in
SC) who may have been the same Jane (Janetta) Boyd who was the daughter of
John (Waggoner Jack) Boyd, son of John (Johnny Buckles) Boyd, son of John
Boyd of Ballymena. I had this connection through James Boyd, Jane Boyd's
brother, who moved from Newberry to Pike, Meriwether, and later Fayette
County, Georgia. James Boyd married Amelia (Milly) Tidwell, sister of Mark
Tidwell, who married Frances (Fanny) Boyd, daughter of my Robert Boyd of
Meriwether County, GA. That was one connection.

80. Benjamin FOWLER was born about 1768 in prob Maryland. He died before 1830 in Probably Butler Co, Ohio. He married Mary NAYLOR before 1787 in prob Maryland. [Parents]

Nicholas Naylor (believed to be the brother of Mary Naylor) was living in Madison, Pike Co., ndiana in 1820 - same township as Thomas Fowler, son of Zachariah Fowler and Sarah Polke. It is believed that Zachariah was the brother of Benjamin Fowler (married Mary Naylor). Nicholas was over age 45 and does not show up in subsequent census records, so it's possible that he died before 1830. Also there were several Selby families. Fowlers and Naylors married into the Selby family in Prince Georges Co, MD and Kentucky. This is further evidence of the relationship between Zachariah Fowler and Benjamin Fowler.

1 Male under 16 - James A. Fowler (b. 1787)

1820 Census Analysis - Butler Co, Ohio
Benjamin Fowler Oxford,Butler,OH 1820 (010101-01201) age 45+ (Pg 71)
Males:
1 male age 10-16: Asa?
1 male age 18-26: Jared
1 male age 45+ - Benjamin
Females:
1 female age 10-16: Rebecca
2 females age 16-26: Jared's wife? and Nancy
1 female age 45+ - Mrs. Fowler (Mary?)

Benjamin Fowler age 45+ was living in Oxford, Butler, Ohio in 1820 along with two sons: James and Jeremiah. Benjamin was in Madison Co, Kentucky in 1800 along with Jeremiah and Joseph Fowler who were both sons of Jeremiah Fowler and Drucilla Isaac (Jeremiah was the son of Thomas Fowler and Susannah Ijams). Jeremiah did not have a documented son named Benjamin, therefore he was probably a nephew.
It is probable that Benjamin was a descendant of Thomas Fowler and Susannah Ijams due to his migration patterns and proximity to other descendants and allied families. A Joseph Fowler transferred a military land warrant to Andrew Ellison in the Miami Valley of Ohio in 1815 (500 acres) and it is possible that Benjamin Fowler was related to this Joseph - possibly his brother. Joseph Fowler was in Fayette Co, PA in 1800 and Andrew Ellison was there in 1810. (about a dozen descendants of Thomas Fowler and Susannah Ijams were in Fayette Co, PA from 1790 to 1800). There was a younger Joseph Fowler living in Wayne Twp, Butler OH in 1820 age 26-45 who was probably the son or nephew of Benjamin. The older Joseph Fowler may have died before 1820 or he may have moved to Boone County, KY which is located next to Hamilton Co, Ohio and very near Butler Co. A Joseph Fowler age 45+ was in Burlington, Boone Co, KY in 1820 along with a Benjamin Fowler age 26-45 who may have been his son.
Benjamin was in Butler Co, Ohio by 1808 because his son James Fowler was married to Elizabeth Devore in that county in 1808. Benjamin named one of his sons Jeremiah, therefore making a possible connection to Jeremiah Fowler and Drucilla Isaac who were also in Madison, KY in 1800. Thomas Fowler and Susannah Ijams had a son Benjamin who died probably before 1790 in Anne Arundel, MD. Our Benjamin may have been his son who migrated to Kentucky to be with his uncle Jeremiah after his father's death.
Benjamin has not been located in the 1790 Federal census, however, the widow of the elder Benjamin - Hammutal Stinchcomb Fowler - was in Anne Arundel, MD in 1790. There was one male over 16, one male under 16 and 2 females in her household. It is possible that the male over 16 was Benjamin, the male under 16 was James and one of the females was the wife of Benjamin. Hammutal may have died before 1800 since she is not found after 1790 in census records. Other references to a Benjamin Fowler have been found in the Maryland Archives but it is not possible to determine which Benjamin Fowler they were referring to - there were several Benjamin Fowlers in Anne Arundel and Prince Georges, MD.

POSSIBLE TIMELINE:
1765 - 1787: Living in Maryland - possibly Anne Arundel or Prince George County
1788 - 1799: Living in Maryland, Pennsylvania or Kentucky
1800 - 1807: Living in Madison Co, Kentucky
1808 - 1820+: Living in Oxford Twp, Butler Co, Ohio - probably died there before 1830

email to Marcia 2/21/2005:
Marcia - I found some connections between the Duvalls and the Fowlers in Darke OH which is near Butler OH. A Hezekiah Fowler married Isabella Duvall April 10 1821 in Darke Co, OH. He was born abt 1785 in MD. She was born abt 1800 in PA. Further research revealed that Isabella's father was Daniel Duvall who may have been in Prince George, MD in 1790 - an older Daniel was there with one young male (see below). Her father was in Springhill Fayette, PA in 1800 and 1810 and Darke Co, OH in 1820. Isn't Springhill the same town that John D. Fowler was in? I think Hezekiah was a descendant of Thomas Fowler and Susanna Iiams. Others listed in Prince Geo MD in 1790 included Thomas, William, Joseph, Samuel and Abraham. Thomas Sr. died in that county. His sons were William, Thomas, John, Benjamin, Samuel, Jeremiah and Benoni. I think some of those Fowlers on the Oath of Fidelity list of 1778 were his descendants.
Hezekiah Fowler may have been a son of one of the Fowlers in Fayette PA in 1800-1810 since he married the daughter of Daniel Duvall who was in Fayette PA when his son Harden was born there in 1813. This doesn't mean Hezekiah was also there, but it's a good possiblity. A Thomas Fowler with 2 young males was on the 1790 Prince Geo MD list (gone in 1800) and 2 Thomas Fowlers were in Fayette PA in 1800 but neither had sons the right age. A Thomas Fowler was also in Darke OH in 1820 age 45+ along with a John Fowler age 26-45 and Daniel Fowler b. in MD abt. 1793. Although the 1800 profile for Thomas shows 1 male 0-5 and 3 males 5-10, he may be the one who was in Darke OH in 1820 and the father of Hezekiah, John and Daniel - the ages may be off a few years or the 1800 census may have errors.
Of those who were born in MD still living in 1850 Ohio - I compiled a list below. There were several Johns. Another interesting list would be those who were born in PA between 1800 and 1819 and went to OH. I'll do that one next.
Lots of analyzing and guessing going on, but one thing leads to another - or at least helps to rule people out. I have a feeling Hezekiah, Daniel, John and Thomas of Darke OH were related to one or both of the Fowlers you and I are researching.

82. Jeremiah DEVORE was born about 1758 in Sussex, NJ or MD. He died on 22 Mar 1841 in Putnam, Indiana. He married Nancy MANN about 1784 in New Jersey. [Parents]

A Jeremiah Devore was listed in the 1820 census in Bracken KY (may have been a different Jeremiah) but his brother Benjamin had property taxed in Butler Co, OH in 1808 - the year Elizabeth Devore and James Fowler were married there. Elizabeth may have been engaged to James before he moved to Ohio and when he bought his land there near Benjamin, Elizabeth could have gone there to be married. Bracken, KY and Butler, OH are quite close to one another. John Mann, Elizabeth's uncle, was taxed for property in Hamilton Co, OH in 1799 and 1810 - Butler Co. was part of Hamilton Co. until 1803.

History of Washington Co, PA
Churches.- The religious society in this township now known as the Maple Baptist Church was originated under the title of "Baptist Church Enan," and was in existence as early as March 19, 1791. At that time its members were John Bailey, William Jackman, Sr., Stephen Barclay, Henry Speer, Samuel Vail, Charles Whitlatch, William Jackman, Jr., Abraham Evans, James Deems, James Watson, Jesse Vandolah, John Mason, Nathan ELLIS, Aaron Boylan, John Seward, John Ennis, William Allen, John Vandolah, Thomas Crow, John Earles, Nathaniel Carns, Thomas Carson, George Innis, John Stelle, William McFee, Thomas Cloud, B. George, Mary Barclay, Rebecca Speers, Margaret ELLIS, Rachel Mifford, Mary Jackman, Nancy Neal, Sarah Boylan, Nancy Bailey, Margaret Innis, Catherine Seward, Abigail Hayden, Sarah Vandolah, Elizabeth Bonham, Margaret Earles, Winifred Ryan, Lavina Stelle, Eleanor ELLIS, Esther Vandolah, Anna Vandolah, Mary CARSON, Mary Ward, Mary Burgess, Lucy Burgess, Elsie Stanish, Jemima Evans, Mary Patton, Rachel Springer, Peggy Cloud, Elizabeth Yateman, Keziah Berk, Abigail Ogg, Polly Carns, Elizabeth Burgan and Elizabeth Burgan (2d), Keziah Barkhammer, Rebecca Prichard, Sarah Parsons, Mary Ertlin, Nancy Riggs, Rachel Springer, Catherine Rutan, and Mary Karnes. (Note: The Carsons in Fallowfield were of the family of Thomas Carson and Mary Smith)
Not much information is to be gained concerning the primitive business interests of Fallowfield township, save that of the farming and general improvement done by the early settlers. However, considerable whiskey must have been manufactured in the township and its immediate vicinity, as Mr. Edward West says "that at one period of his life he could stand on the bill where his father's farm lay and see the smoke from nineteen distilleries in active operation." As early as 1783, Fallowfield township paid a State tax which amounted to £50, and it was the only township in Washington County that paid such a tax in that year, the county commissioners in the report of their session held that year stating that "they did exonerate and discharge the inhabitants of each township from the payment of the State tax, except a few inhabitants in Fallowfield township, which the commissioners allowed should pay a State tax, for reasons known to them, which amounts to £50." Benjamin White was the assessor of Fallowfield township for 1783, Nathan Ellis collector, and the amount of the county tax £94 10s.

"In the Spring of 1795 Captain Nathan Ellis and his five brothers embarked on boats (flat-boats) at Brownsville on the Mongahela, PA and floated on down past Pittsburg into the Ohio, looking for homes in the mighty forests and fertile lands of the then almost unknown (unexplored) Northwest Territory. The Ohio was the great highway over which cam much of the tide of emigration which have peopled this section of the Union, amighty stream hemmed in by a continent of gloomy shade and wierd(sic) solitude, rolling its unbroken length for a thousand miles, a beautiful stretch of restless, heaving water which realized to the voyager the "ocean river of Homeric son.' "Landing at Limestone, (now Maysville in Mason County) the Ellis brothers were so charmed with the romantic beauty of the region and the productiveness of the soil that they determined at once to go no further. At the same time, with the exception of a few isolated settlements at marietta, Manchester, Gallipolis, and Cincinnati, there were but few settlers on the north bank of the river, while upon the south side of the country, it was swarming with emigrants seeking out and appropriating the richest lands and most eligible town sites. Like the Jordan of old, the Ohio was the great boundary line. It stayed the incursions of the Indians, and north of its immediate banks (beyond it) the wave of immigration had not rolled. The very day, April 27, 1795, that (Captain) Nathan Ellis landed at Limestone, 500 red men were encamped right across the river. Finding that the most valuable lands were taken up, the Ellis brothers determined to push on into the Northwest Territory." Captain Nathan Ellis laid out Aberdeen, directly opposite Maysville, KY, and his brother Sam the town of Higginsport, eighteen miles below. Each of the five brothers took up large tracts of land, and such has been the staying qualities of the name, that many of the original entries still remain in the possession of the family. As a connection, they have ever been blessed with an abundance of the good things in life, and inherit many of the sterling qualities which distringuished their Quaker ancestors. Nathan Ellis and Mary Walker, his wife, had 10 children, all of whom have passed away with the exception of their daughter, Mes. Elender Higgins-now in her 88th year - of Johnson County, Missouri. Jeremiah Ellis was born 1779 and in 1803, was married to Miss Anna Underwood-a daughter of one of the best known and wealthiest families in Virginia. Ten children blessed their union, seven of whom still survive. Washington Ellis was born 1804, and in the 1832, married Miss Aris Parker, of Madison Co, KY. Jesse Ellis was born 1792 and married Sabina, a daughter of Capt. William Burks, of Mason Co, KY, a contemporary and warm personal friend of both Boone and Kenton. He and his brother Thomas were captured at Blue Licks and were prisoners among the Indians for five years. Major John Ellis, of an Ohio infantry regiment in the War of 1812, married Keziah, a daughter of Thomas Burks. Jesse Ellis died 1877 in his 95th year. His wife died May 14, 1882, in her 90th year. Nathan Ellis died 1819 and is buried on the hill overlooking Aberdeen. John died 1829, Jeremiah in 1858, and Washington in 1873. The last three lie in the family cemetery at Ellis Landing, four miles above Maysville. N E built the first home in what is known as Aberdeen, and 21 years later laid out the town, directly opposite Maysville, KY, naming it for the native home of a fellow townsman, James Campbell.
