E-mail from Boyd/Wagner descendant 2/6/04
Hi Sandra:

Thanks for writing! I wish I had the information on
their ancestry but I haven't been able to find
anything. I am descended from two of Robert's sons,
William (1801-1857) and Joseph (1816-1892). I know
that Robert and Nancy were either from Georgia or
North Carolina. I gathered this from the 1880 census
years ago and unfortunately I didn't make copies of
the pages. A lot of it is online today. I would need
to look at the 1880 census records which list the
parent's places of birth which we could check for
Joseph, Simeon, John, and Nancy--I think those were
the ones alive at that time.

Then, we could go through North Carolina and Georgia
records to see if there are any marriages for Robert
Boyd dating from approximately 1799 to 1800.

I don't think anyone has been successful in trying to
go back further than Robert and a lot of my cousins
have been researching this family for years.

The last bit of significant information I found was
the death date for Robert's daughter, Nancy Boyd Green
who married Hanson Marlow after the death of her
husband, she died April 5, 1880 in Schuyler County,
Illinois. Some of her descendants live there. I have
never been able to get that far with Robert's sons who
moved to Oregon.

I'll check out your website again and I will make sure
to get back to you.

Info on some of Robert and Nancy's children:

Robert Berry Boyd
Born: 1809, probably New Madrid Co., MO

John Nixon Boyd
Born: February 1814, presumably New Madrid Co., MO

Joseph Camp Boyd
Born: Nov. 7, 1816, New Madrid Co., MO; died: March
3, 1892, Douglas Co., MO; md February 26, 1836, Cooper
Co., MO

Robert Boyd Sr. arrived in Missouri Territory sometime
around 1808/1809. It is known that he lived in New
Madrid County until after the 1811 and 1812
earthquakes that eventually led them to move north to
Cooper County where he died in 1835.

Take care,
Morgan

Email to Morgan (5/15/2004):
Hi Morgan - I hope you remember me. We sent a few emails back and forth in February about Robert Boyd and Nancy Wagner. I've been searching for evidence of the Boyds in early Georgia and I found a Boyd and a Waggoner living in the same county. There were other Boyds and Waggoners in Georgia but these were the only ones in the same county. I'm thinking these may be the parents of Robert and Nancy. Below I've listed the documents I've located so far. None of this shows anything definitive but I have a feeling the Boyd family migrated from Europe to Georgia sometime before 1736 on their own account - not by order of the government. Thomas Boyd may have been one of the first Boyds in early Georgia. William Boyd and Thomas Waggoner owned property in the Waggoner District of Richmond Co in 1797. I thought you'd like to know what I've discovered so here's the documentation:

GEORGIA TAX LIST:
WAGGONER, THOMAS, RICHMOND COUNTY 1797 DISTRICT: WAGGONER
BOYD, WILLIAM, RICHMOND COUNTY 1797 DISTRICT: WAGGONER

In 1790 Thomas Waggoner was in Richmond Co GA and so was John Waggoner and John Boyd

In 1820 William Boyd was in Richmond Co, GA and so was John Boyd (William and John were still in Georgia when Robert and Nancy were in Cooper Co MO)
John Boyd 1820 (Males: 2 age 0-10, 1 over age 45) - born before 1775 - John could be the father of William and Robert
William Boyd 1820 (Age 26-45) - born between 1775 and 1794
Neither of them are indexed in Richmond Co GA in 1830

A List of the Early Settlers of Georgia, Part II: Persons Who Went from Europe to Georgia on Their Own Account, Page 65:
A land grant of 500 acres was granted to Thomas Boyd in Georgia in 1736

In 1738 a Samuel Wagner died in Georgia but he left no heirs. He may be an uncle to Nancy. His will was written in French and he is listed in Germans of Colonial Georgia.

Extrapolating from all of this, here's the way it may have been:

Thomas Boyd, died 1736, born in Europe
John Boyd lived in Richmond Co GA 1790, 1797, 1820 - probably had a son named William
Robert Boyd in Cooper Co Mo - may have been son of John and brother of William, may have been born in Richmond Co, Georgia

Thomas Waggoner was in Richmond Co GA 1790, 1797
John Waggoner was in Richmond Co GA 1790 - uncertain who is older

Robert and Nancy may have been married in Richmond Co GA

One of the Boyds may have been a minister. I found this:
Early Chronicles of Richmond Co, GA
Competition between the Sandwiches and the Lubbocks on the pages of the Chronicle
continues in the spring of 1795, with both advertising in the Chronicle of
March 14, March 21, March 28 and April 4,. On April 11 a competitor EDMOND WALSH
appears, who claims to have already met with encouragement as a
teacher of children, and announces on April 11, 1795, that he is setting up a new school in
the back part of Mr Edwards’ lot, opposite the house occupied by the
reverend parson Boyd.

Of course, all of this is pure guess work, but at least something to start with.

---------2nd email to Morgan:

Morgan - After I sent the first email I found this:

Jane Boyd b 12 Nov 1805 Chester Co, SC
d 12 May 1881 Burke Co, GA
m 14 Feb 1836 Richmond Co., GA
Rev Mark Lively
b 27 Feb 1791 Burke Co., GA
d 31 Jan 1852 Burke Co., GA
son of Rev Matthew Lively and Elizabeth Odom (Odin)

Therefore, it appears the Boyds of Richmond Co GA were from Chester Co, SC - at least some of them were.

Also found a query on rootsweb referring to a John (Waggoner Jack) Boyd. Curious about that Waggoner name.

I was working on Corbins in Gwinnett County, Georgia, when I discovered that
Ira A. Corbin, b. abt 1805 in SC) was married to Jane Boyd, (b. abt 1800 in
SC) who may have been the same Jane (Janetta) Boyd who was the daughter of
John (Waggoner Jack) Boyd, son of John (Johnny Buckles) Boyd, son of John
Boyd of Ballymena. I had this connection through James Boyd, Jane Boyd's
brother, who moved from Newberry to Pike, Meriwether, and later Fayette
County, Georgia. James Boyd married Amelia (Milly) Tidwell, sister of Mark
Tidwell, who married Frances (Fanny) Boyd, daughter of my Robert Boyd of
Meriwether County, GA.

DESCRIPTIONS OF LAND NOT AVAILABLE - REASON:
In the late 1790's and early 1800's, several dozen volumes of Ohio military bounty warrants were issued to Virginia veterans of the Revolutionary War. The lands were in the Virginia Military District in central Ohio (between the Scioto River and Little Miami River), which was set aside to fulfill the land requirements of these warrants. The land descriptions on these warrants consisted of little more than a metes and bounds survey, which was usually tied to other metes and bounds surveys in that area for previously issued warrants. Just about the only data the BLM project team was able to capture from these warrants was the soldier's name, warrant number, survey date, signature date and acreage. Due to the lack of precise information on where the land was located, it was not possible to tie these records to a specific land description or to a county within the Virginia Military District.

I am searching for information on my Benjamin Fowler, born Ireland or
England, married Mary Nailor, and had a daughter Rebecca born 1807 in KY.
He may have been in Madison KY from the tax lists there in the early
1800's, along with James and Jeremiah Fowler. All three later show up in
Butler OH, where Rebecca married Henry Carson in 1829. Henry moved to
Preble OH in 1830, and I lose track of Benjamin. He bought land in
Marion IN, Owen IN and Muskingum OH. Henry lived in Marion IN in 1840
census, then moved to Andrew MO.

Henry Carson was son of David Carson and Margaret Ellis, also of Butler
OH and perhaps Hamilton OH, too.

If anyone could help me on these folks, I would really appreciate it.

43. Margaret ELLIS was born in 1771 in Pennsylvania. She died after 1830 in poss Butler Co, Ohio. [Parents]

It has not been proven that Nathan's daughter Margaret is the one who married David Carson. Margaret married unknown Scicily according to one researcher. It is fairly certain that Margaret Ellis who married David Carson was part of this Ellis family because the other Ellis family in that region of Ohio at the time were from Mass and Margaret's birthplace was PA, according to 1880 census records for her daughter Meriba. Also, the Ellis family from Mass did not have a female named Margaret as far as it is known. Nathan Ellis was in the region at the time and had a daughter named Margaret born in the same generation as David Carson. David was also born in PA.

55. Susanna EVANS was born in 1831 in Indiana. She died on 21 Mar 1888 in Missouri. She was buried in North Evans Cemetery, Grundy Co., Mo.. [Parents]

Listed in graves at No. Evans Cemetery in Grundy, Mo is a grave for Sarah Evans, wife of John F. Wolz and daughter of Rev. Evans, founder of North and South Evans Cemeteries. Sarah may be Susannah's sister. Susannah's father was reported to be named John and the Reverend's first name is John. There is also a Mary J. Evans buried at the So Evans Cemetary born in Indiana and a Martha Evans born in Indiana. Susannah was also born in Indiana. With three of the four Evans females known to be the dau of Rev Evans, it makes sense that Susannah is also his daughter. The reason she is not listed in the 1850 census is because she was already married and living with Nimrod Vandevender.

Email to MA 1/16/2005:
MA - I can find no references to Ganley Branch, but I found this interesting information about the old roads in Laurel, Knox, Rockcastle and Whitley Counties. There was a Salt Road that went from Manchester (Clay Co), across the Rockcastle River at the mouth of Big Raccoon, across Richmond Road north of Hazel Patch and meets the Wilderness Road. On the map I have, the Wilderness Road goes south near Livingston (Rockastle), crosses the Rockcastle River, into Hazel Patch in Laurel Co. I think the Salt Road went east to west from Manchester, Clay through Mershons Crossing toward Hazel Patch. This Salt Road was in Clay and Laurel Co and not in Rockcastle - so there must have been another Salt Road further north unless this one continued on from Hazel Patch, north into Rockcastle Co. No Salt Works Road exists now. Anyway, since Hezekiah's place was on the waters of Rockcastle River, it looks like he was on the border between Rockcastle and Laurel counties. Hazel Patch is only a few miles south of the Rockcastle River in Laurel Co.
I'll write more in a new email about the reference to Elisha Smallwood.

From Russell Dyche's "Laurel County Kentucky." This material is copyrighted. See previous note about copyright.
""The Kentucky Mountains", a Filson Club publication, has been quoted previously. This portion of our story on The Wilderness Road is based almost entirely on records related in this most interesting and factual work by Miss Mary Verhoeff, now First Vice-President of this Club which has contributed so much to our knowledge of the history of Kentucky. "Salt was an essential commodity that was not too plentiful in Kentucky at the time, and a most promising source of salt was on the waters of Goose Creek in what is now Clay county. So an Act of Dec. 21, 1802, Miss Verhoeff tells us, established a road from Richmond in Madison county to the salt works on Goose creek owned by John Patrick and others and known as Langford's Lick. This was to the vicinity of present Manchester, turning off from the main Richmond road near (south of) the Rockcastle river. The Act also provided for a Salt Road from Pulaski Court House to the same saltworks and also to Outlaw's salt works on Collins Fork, a few miles northeast of the present day corner of Clay, Knox and Laurel county; which, of course, would cross Laurel county.
Turnpikes For Clay County "An Act of Jan. 31, 1810, established turnpikes (toll gates) for two years, and "no longer," because the roads were very bad, with but few inhabitants living near them. Both were built by Clay county and their lives were extended at least seven years by subsequent Legislatures. The more important was on the road from Madison and Lincoln counties to the lower lick, or Langfords'. (From Lincoln county probably "the Windingblade road" to join the road from Madison at or beyond Mershons' Cross Roads.) The less important was on the road from "Hale's old place on Wilderness Road in Knox county" to the upper salt works (probably Outlaw's). From Hale's the road led to Ephrim Moore's on Lynn Camp creek, and on to Mouth of Laurel river. Feb. 16, 1808, a road was ordered from the Knox County Court House to intersect with road from Langford's to the Pulaski County House at or near Benjamin Thurman's. Jan. 12, 1842, a road was ordered from Mouth of Rockcastle river passing through London, to Daniel Bates' salt furnace on Collins Fork of Goose Creek, below the old Outlaw (Later the original White) salt works.
The Sublimity Road "In an Act of 1858, establishing "the London, Somerset and Waitsborough (Head of navigation on the Cumberland river--Burnside) Turnpike Road Company," is this statement: "And as there are funds in the hand of Jarvis Jackson, of Laurel county, as a Commissioner, directed by act of General Assembly to be applied to the opening of a road from London, in Laurel county, to the Cumberland river; and as the route contemplated...is the same....a considerable portion of distance toward Cumberland river...the County Court of Laurel county shall have power, if it so desires, to order an appropriation of such portion of said fund" prorata to this new venture. This possibly was the same "good" road, from London and Somerset, that Dr. Christopher C. Graham has been credited with building to Sublimity Springs, which was incorporated as a town, Feb. 12, 1860. ""By the close of the period," said Miss Verhoeff, "there were three main State roads, from the vicinity of Manchester, intersecting the Wilderness Road, which had been maintained by tollgates upon them or by tolls collected on the main road. One led via Burning Springs, Clay county, crossing the Madison road near (the) Hazel Patch. (Via Mershons Cross Road and Windingblade road to north of new Hazelpatch on the Wilderness Road.) Another passed up Otter creek of Goose creek and down Stinking creek to Cumberland river. The third led to Somerset via London, with a branch passing through Raccoon Springs on (waters of Robinson creek, a tributary to) Laurel river.
Road To Mouth Of Laurel ""Besides roads leading to the salt works there were a number of other tributaries, local routes, which were given occasional aid. The most important of these extended to coal mines near the mouth of Laurel river, the head of descending navigation for coal barges on the Cumberland. (Coal barges were loaded up Rockcastle river to Sublimity Springs, just below the Narrows.) The opening of a road from London in Laurel county to the mouth of 'Big Laurel River' was ordered by Act of Feb. 2, 1833. By Act of Jan. 30, 1847, the money and land warrants for the road were transferred to the road via London to Bates' salt furnace...An Act of Feb. 25, 1835, appropriated ten thousand acres of land to Pulaski county for the opening of a road from Somerset to 'coal mines on or near Cumberland river'."
Natural As Shipping Depot "In this connection, Miss Verhoeff quoted from a report by Captain Howard Stansbury, United States Engineer, in 1834: "The point (mouth of Laurel)... from the geographical position would naturally become a depot for shipment...Lying in the direct route from the upper and lower country it must before long become the point of deposit for all articles of trade that depend upon the river for their transportation. The country, especially between this point and Barbourville, is particularly adapted to the favorable location of roads, being high and dry at a short distance back from the river, remarkably free from anything that would render their construction expensive. I was informed by many of the inhabitants that could a certain navigation be secured to this point on the river they would be willing and glad to construct the necessary roads for the transportation of their produce at their own expense.""
Knoxville Branch Most Important To London "Probably the "feeder" to The Wilderness Road most important to Laurel county during these earlier years, certainly most important to London, was the branch to Knoxville. An Act of Dec. 9, 1820, extablished a road from "Jackson's" in Knox county, through Williamsburg in Whitley county, to the Tennessee line, and provided for the erection of a tollgate on it. On Feb. 2, 1833, there was an Act providing help for building a bridge across Lynn Camp creek on this road. "Having this road was a principal argument of the Jacksons in their effort to have London made the county seat when Laurel county was organized in 1926. When the town was laid out, Whitley street extended from Main street at the south side of the public square, down the hill across Whitley branch to where the Whitley road turned to the left, or south. It was in comparatively recent years that its name has been changed to Fourth street.
Raccoon Springs and Mouth Laurel River Important Highway Centers "It will be seen from the above that Raccoon Springs and the Mouth of Laurel were points in Laurel County from which state turnpike roads radiated, and after its establishment, London. Most important up to 1797, "The Hazel patch" became just a point on the map till its disappearance, and several miles down the creek its name was appropriated as Hazlepatch on The Wilderness Road, and later by the railroad as Hazelpatch. "On H. S. Tanners map of 1823, Raccoon Springs and Hazelpatch where the Richomnd road crossed that creek about a half mile below "The Hazel Patch," were the only places in Laurel county shown. An unnamed map of 1834 shows two roads from south joining at Raccoon Springs; London with the Raccoon Springs, Whitley and Manchester roads, and the Somerset road leaving the Wilderness Road a little north of it; and Hazel Patch as noted above. The Salt Road from Manchester crosses Rockcastle river at the mouth of Big Raccoon, crosses the Richmond road north of Hazel Patch (doubtless Mershons Cross Roads), and enters the Wilderness Road about half way between Hazlepatch creek and the Rockcastle ford. Little Raccoon is labeled "South Fork of Rockcastle".
Distances Given ""Kentucky Roads and Distances", 1850, gives Cumberland Gap to Cumberland Ford 15 miles, to Barbourville 16, to Raccoon Springs 18, to London 16, to Richmond 43. Hazel Patch is not shown. J. H. Cotton's Map of 1856 shows Raccoon Springs as junction of roads from Williamsburg, Barbourville and London. "Middleton Strobridge's Map of 1862 shows "turnpike road" from Richmond to Kingston, Walnut Valley, Hazelpatch (at old location), London, Raccoon Springs, Lynn Camp, Barbourville, Flat Lick, Cumberland Ford, Cumberland Gap. From Raccoon Springs road lead to White Lily, Woodbine, etc., and on to Flat Lick. From London a road leads south of east to Diana, where it connects with the "Moore Road" from Northern Laurel county, by Bushes Store, Diana, and down Big Richland to Barbourville. "Johnson's Map of between 1860 and 1867 shows Walnut Valley just south of Kingston, Hazelpatch about old location, Camp Wildcat slightly north of present Pittsburg, London, Raccoon Springs slightly east of road, Barbourville and Cumberland Ford on road to Cumberland Gap. (Old folks have told me a supply depot was kept at Raccoon Springs during Civil War and there are still evidence of different road in that vicinity.)
On Salt Works Road "Taintor Bros. & Merrill Map of 1874 shows on the Wilderness Road: Cumberland Gap, Cumberland Ford, Flat Lick, Barbourville, Lynn Camp, Raccoon Springs, London, Mt. Vernon, Crab Orchard. On the Madison road, Hazelpatch at old location, Big Hill, Walnut Valley, and "Old Town" (Millville) southwest of Richmond. From Raccoon Springs is a road to Somerset, one to connect with the London-Diana-Manchester road and another to the south of it. Shown are the Salt Works road from Manchester to the Wilderness Road, and a road south from it at about Raccoon Creek through Bush Store and Diana to Barbourville. White Lily is shown on the Williamsburg road. On Cram's Map of 1879 are shown Raccoon Springs, Laurel Bridge, London, The Glades, Diana at corner Clay, Knox and Laurel counties, Sublimity, Houses Store, Racoon Bend, Greenmount, Hazle patch near old location.
Shows Railroad To London "Frank A. Gray Railroad map of 1876, shows Hazlepatch at its present location, and Livingston with "Fish Point" as the post office. Asher & Adams Map of between 1870 and 1878, prematurely shows railroad to London, Fish Point on the river, and Livingston about half way between there and Pine Hill."
[Dyche provides much more information about the Wilderness Road, its maintenance, the Wilderness Road Company, etc., but we are getting off the topic of this list. If anyone is interested in further readings, this book should be availabe via InterLibrary Loan.]

Email from MA:
Lillian Broughton Creech reported that Hezekiah and Betsy moved back to Clay County after marrying in Knox County, KY in 1822. Sons listed in Broughton book: James H. and Hezekiah--other two? Don't know her source??? Just emailed with Kathy Hanlon in Texas on her Broughtons and she said to look at your site for her research...

The fact that there were no Smallwoods listed in 1820 Knox, KY (where Hez and Eliz were married) but there were Broughtons (Elizabeth's father included) and there were Ragans, along with Blaggrove Hopper, indicates to me that our Hezekiah may have been raised by Owen Ragan. If Hez was the son of Jonathan Smallwood he would have been about age 12-13 when he died. He may have kept his last name of Smallwood instead of being adopted by Ragan.

They may have been the parents of Hezekiah and maybe he was raised by a relative. Stephen Ring married a Rachael Smallwood (b. Sep 1775 NC) in NC but no info on her parents. She may have been an unknown daughter of Smallwood/Philpot (they were in Rowan NC in 1800) or she may have been Jonathan's sister and raised by Smallwood/Philpot because Jonathan's father Elijah died in 1810. Elijah, shows two females age 16-26 in his family in 1800 Surry NC. Rachael's husband Stephen Ring died in Aug 1816/1817 and she was in Lebanon, Russell, VA in 1820 living next to Thomas Ring (age 18-26). He was her son. She died in 1850 in Russell, VA and never remarried. I found an Ann Ring living in Shelby KY in 1830. She was age 40-50. That's where Smallwood/Philpot's son Elijah was in 1830 and Smallwood/Philpot were in 1820. There was a Lucius Ring living in Rockcastle Co Ky in 1850 - no idea who he is.

Email from Mary Ann 4/12/04
Think that I have told you that Polly (nickname for Mary) Smallwood married John Lawson in 1820 and Edy (nickname for Edith/Elizabeth?) married John Edwards in 1820, both in Knox where 1799 Hezekiah married Betsy Broughton in 1822 and they all three used Blaggrove Hopper as their preacher! Now I really think that is family! The Lawson and Edwards families lived near the Broughtons on the census records. The Hopper families are also neighbors and married into the Smallwoods.
---------------------------------------

The parents of Hezekiah Smallwood have not been verified. According to census records, our Hezekiah was born about July 1799. Hez Sr and Frankie Owen were married in Dec 1799. Hezekiah, the son of Pryor, born at about the same time has been ruled out (b. abt 1796) because his children's names are entirely different. After checking the other known Hezekiah Smallwoods, all others have been ruled out for various reasons.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ANALYSIS OF SMALLWOODS IN HARDIN CO KY:

1. THE FAMILY OF HEZEKIAH SMALLWOOD AND LOIS SMITH (FRANKIE OWEN DIED IN 1811):

1820 Federal Census - Little York, Hardin Co., KY:
Hezaciah Smallwood Sen (The fact that he is referred to as "Senior" indicates that there is a Junior some where)

Males:
3 males under 10, (James S. and ??)
1 male 10-16, (Henderson)
1 male 26-45, (Hez Sr)
Females:
2=0-10, (Mariah and Melvina)
2=10-16, (Lydia and Sarah)
2=16-26, (Elizabeth and Mary)
1=26-45 (Lois)

Hezekiah may have had more children than most people know about. Two of the males under age 10 are unknown. they were in Hardin Ky by 1820. They were not there on the 1810 census, nor the 1800 census.
Frankie Owen died in about 1811.

Also in Little York, Hardin, KY in 1820:
ELENOR SMALLWOOD KY Hardin County Little York 1820 (Pryor's Widow)
HEZE SMALLWOOD KY Hardin County Little York 1820 (Hez & Electa Ford)
HEZEKIAH SR. SMALLWOOD KY Hardin County Little York 1820 (Hez & Lois Smith)
SAMUEL SMALLWOOD KY Hardin County Little York 1820 (Benjamin's son - Hez Sr's brother)
SAMUEL JR. SMALLWOOD KY Hardin County Little York 1820 (Unknown)

2. THE FAMILY OF HEZEKIAH SMALLWOOD (SON OF PRYOR) AND ELECTA FORD
KY 1820 Federal Census Index
Name: HEZE SMALLWOOD
State: KY
County: Hardin County
Township: Little York
Year: 1820
Page: 020
MALES: 1(0-10), 0, 2(16-26) (Younger male was Simeon)
FEMALES: 1(0-10), 0, 1(16-26) (Younger female was Elizabeth)

3. I think it's very interesting that in 1870 Isaac N. Smallwood is living in the same county as Henderson Smallwood (Doniphan, KS) - and in 1880 Riley Smallwood is living in the same county as Isaac (Scotland, MO). I suppose it's just a coincidence, but still VERY interesting. Why would Riley move to Scotland County when the rest of his family was in Clark County, Vernon County or elsewhere? It could be a possible link between Hezekiah and Henderson

It makes sense that Hez Sr and Heze, the son of Pryor, would be living in the same town. Hez Sr was Pryor's younger brother. Pryor died in 1810, 10 years prior to this census. "HEZE" was Hez Sr's nephew - not his son.

Email from Mary Ann - As I was giving you the male "E" Smallwood names, I thought perhaps it was Elizabeth Smallwood (women's libber that I am), but I went to the papers on the Grant/Warrant/Survey (I did a lot of business with Brandi in the KY office) and it says HIS heirs, but no other clue as to who "E" might be!

Aloha cousins found E. (Elisha) Smallwood in Clark Co. MO
Desmoine Twp 1860 census. Nancy J listed as 2yrs
old born in MO. Jno is 1 born in MO E and his
wife Mary are both 30 b KY. Living with them is
Riley Smallwood 21 KY (?brother). Aloha states
that Riley is a brother of my Elisha, they lived
next door to sister Elizabeth Jane Stump's future
in-laws.) also living there are brothers James
and John and this is where the 1799 Hezekiah died
in 1869.
Check out 1850 Rockcastle census with Hezekia,
Elisha age 16 listed and marriage to Mary Moore
in 1853 in Laurel/Rockcastle, KY
The above were my notes on FTM.
The H or Hezekia (?) I believe came from a family
bible that Joanna or Carol Webb had.

Email from Mary (Smallwood) Bolton, Mar 28, 2004:
Aloha Sandra,

I sent you a copy of my email to Juanita regarding my thoughts on the Smallwoods on your web site, but haven't seen a reply from you so--
There are a lot of Hezekiahs out there and I am out of some:
My dad, Chester Fulton Smallwood 1907-1965
out of Hezekiah Smallwood 1873-1940
out of Hezekiah Smallwood 1828-1917
out of Hezekiah Smallwood 1799-1869

I know that you have been trying to figure the families out, but I don't think that my guys were in Hardin County, KY and that there were lots of cousins all named Hezekiah at the same approximate time. I feel that our line goes back to the Col. James Smallwood in 1600's Maryland, but I can't get that 200+ years filled in with accurate information. However, Col. James had the unusual name of Hezekiah in his family, so...

Aloha, Mary Ann (Smallwood) Bolton Mililani, HI

As for Census Records, there are some differences beween Hezekiah and Elizabeth's 1850 Rockcastle and 1860 Schuyler family records as far as names and ages, sure makes it hard to figure them all out. I show Louisa (whoever she is) age 9 born in KY. I also have birth records from Rockcastle for an Eliza born in 1852 to H & E! This daughter, Jane with husband Francisco Stump and daughter Hettie is living with brother James in 1870 after their father Hezekiah died at James' house in 1869. Stump is also on the Will of Hezekiah as a witness and a debtor.

Email from Mary Ann (4/1/2004):
Jane is the last daughter of Hezekiah and Elizabeth Broughton Smallwood, born in 1852 KY. Think she is Eliza Jane. She is the sister of James. Yes, the Will is available in Clark County, MO and the Will is where it said that Hezekiah was living in the home of James for a few months before his death. Also, I have had a question about the Will as it says he left it all to daughter Elizabeth. Well, he did have a daughter Elizabeth born in 1840, but I wonder why he would just leave stuff to her and not the other kids. I have always wondered if that meant wife Elizabeth, but I can't find her after 1860 Census. Don't know where she died or when! Questions! MA

Mary Ann - I know we discussed him before, but I can't remember the discussion - do you have any idea who Abijah Smallwood is?

1850 Census - Laurel Co, KY - same county with Hezekiah (son of Hezekiah and Eliz. Broughton)
Abijah Smallwood, 39, farmer, VA (born abt 1811)
Eveline, 34, KY
Candice, 6, KY
?? , female, 3, KY
?? , male, 5 mos, KY
John Christman, 34, farmer, NC

I have an Elizabeth Hannah Christman in my database who married Willoughby Broughton - do you know anything about John Christman?

Since Abijah is living near Hezekiah (b. abt 1827) in 1850 maybe he's a brother to our mystery Hezekiah. Can't find anything on Abijah before or after 1850 - yet.

Email to Mary Ann 5/7/2004:
Mary Ann - I found some more coincidences. Julia Ann Slusher married Peter Wininger - they were the parents of Phebe Wininger who married Hesekiah Smallwood (b abt 1826 TN) in Scott Co VA. William Broughton (son of John Broughton and Sarah Payne) married Elizabeth Slusher. Elizabeth's father, John, was the nephew of Julia Ann Slusher. Eli Henry Broughton married Eleanor Slusher. She was Elizabeth Slusher's sister.

Phebe's father was from Hawkins Co TN and his wife Julia Ann Slusher was from Scott Co VA. Scott Co VA and Hawkins Co TN are very close to each other. The Slusher families can be found in Montgomery Co, VA > Harlan Co KY > Bell Co, KY > Hawkins Co, TN > Scott Co. VA.

Wm Broughton (and his Slusher wife) were in Stinking Creek, Knox Co KY in 1860. Eli and his wife were living with her father John Slusher in Harlan Co KY. Wm and Eli Broughton were first cousins to Wm Broughton who married Winniford Moore (Laurel Co KY). No idea if this is significant or not.

By the way, I can't find Hezekiah and Eliz. Broughton in 1840 census records. Have you found them in 1840?

Thanks, Sandy

Email to Roger 5/7/2004:
Roger:

I found something curious in the census records. There were two Hezekiah Smallwoods in 1810 VA:

1810 Census - Prince George Co, VA
Hezekiah Smallwood
Males: 1(10-16) 3(16-26) 1(45+)
Females: 1(10-16) 2(16-26) 1(45+)

1810 Census - Haymarket, Prince William, VA
Hezekiah Smallwood
Males: 1(10-16) 2(16-26) 1(45+)
Females: 1(10-16) 3(16-26) 1(45+)

Do you know which one is Hezekiah and Catherine? Any idea who the other one is?

Thanks, Sandra

Dennis -
Thank you so much for taking the time to send that Richard Smallwood information to me. It does show that Richard died in 1827, however Hezekiah was married in Knox Co KY in 1822 and I believe two of his sisters were married in Knox in 1820. The chances are he was not related to Richard but I'm happy to have the research info anyway. I'm trying to gather as much as I can about all Smallwoods in that region.
Thanks again, Sandra

Email to MA 1/14/2005:
Ma - I was googling for Joseph Broughton and I stumbled across a Broughton family home page with this.....
John Henry Broughton, was born December 28, 1773 in St Mark's Parish, South Carolina to Edward and Elizabeth Ragan Broughton. (William Ragan's Will, dated January 15, 1785 leaves part of his estate to "John Broughton, the son of my daughter, Elizabeth Broughton. On March 3, 1800, John sold the land, consisting of 208 acres to James Harkness for $500. The deed was originally recorded Sept. 16, 1800.)
John Henry Broughton went to Georgia around 1802. Their son Nathaniel Broughton went to Alabama 1814-1817. Their son Edward Jr. stayed in South Carolina - he was in Sumter Dist., South Carolina 1816.
Willoughby's sons Jesse and John lived in Georgia. Some of Smallwood/Philpot's sons went to Georgia also.
---------------------------------------
<http://www.kcnet.com/~denis/gates/woodard/broug-02.htm> Willoughby lived in Virginia at least into the 1770's. In 1750 he was living in Richmond County and by late 1755 he and his family were living in Brunswick County. There is some indication that he may have served during the French and Indian War At the Battle of Moore's Bridge, in Surry County, North Carolina, during the Revolutionary War, Willoughby and his two sons, Job and Jesse fought against the Tories. During the 1770's, Willoughby lived in Surry County, moving to Wilkes County, Georgia around 1778. By 1790 Willoughby was living in Marlboro County, South Carolina. Willoughby's second wife wife was widow Joanna Johnston and it was sometime during this decade, the 1790's, that Willoughby moved to Anderson County, South Carolina.
----------------------------------
This part of the Broughton family is not in my database - I don't even know if they are related to our Broughtons, but when I saw that one of them married into the Ragan family I was momentary shocked.
Maybe the Smallwoods / Ragans / Broughtons were connected very early - back to Willoughby. If these families are connected - who knows? Maybe some of them went to Clay and Shelby, KY with Smallwood/Philpot. Ragan and Broughton are not common names and to find them connected in two different situations while researching the same group of people is rather curious.
One problem....that Joseph or Joe Broughton in Clay KY did not show up on that Broughton family web site. I'm still researching him and his probable son Wm.
Now I'll probably go off on a tangent and try to find out more about Edward Broughton and William Ragan....
your thoughts are welcome....
Sandy

MA - Below are the results of my search into the distances from the various locations of our people in Knox/Laurel/Rockcastle/Clay, KY. It looks like the two farthest points are between Big Poplar Creek, Siler, Whitley Co (where the Ragans were) and Livingston, Rockcastle Co - the distance is 62.54 miles. Distance from Stinking Creek, Knox to Big Poplar Creek, Siler, Whitley is 23 miles. This would be the distance between the Ragans and the Broughtons in 1820. All of these areas are fairly close to one another. Distance from Livingston, Rockcastle to Stinking Creek, Knox is 48.9 miles. Distance from Stinking Creek, Knox to Roundstone Creek, Rockcastle is 48.86 miles. Apparently, in 1850, Hez and Betsy were living at least 48 miles away from where they were married. In 1850 the census states they were in North District of Rockcastle which makes me think they were near Roundstone Creek. Do you happen to know??

MA - Thanks for that info! Duh, I had Betsy's birth place in my data base and didn't realize that her birth place does not coincide with census records. In 1810 Woodred Broughton was listed in Buncombe, NC - however, I understand that some families were listed in a certain county even though they were no longer there because they owned land there. Betsy's brother John who was born abt 1806 was born in NC. Her sister Charlotte was born in 1808 in Knox, KY. In 1806/07 Clay County was formed from Madison, Knox and Floyd. I'm still confused about when and where all these county lines were in relation to the Creeks. I want to find a map of SE KY for 1800, 1810 and 1820. I'll start looking for that.
You sent me this note:
--------------------------------------------
Email from Mary Ann - First of the Broughton line to scout out Kentucky. He may have been on NC & KY Census/Tax Lists simultaneously.
May 17 1809 Knox County, Kentucky Tax List Woodard BROTTON
1810 BROUGHTON WOODARD Beaufort NC 092 Buncomb
-----------------------------------------
I also found this information about Clay County:
"Clay County 1806-1807 Clay County The Mother of Many Counties"
<http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ranch/8032/welch.html>
There have been a number of questions as to when Clay County became a county. The Kentucky Legislature created our county on December 2, 1806, but the effective date was April 1, 1807. It did not start doing business as a county until that date. Since this was the case, I feel 1807 should be used. The first deed in book A is dated 07-13-1807...
----------------------------------------
The information I have about Woodred states that he was in Goose Creek (Brush Creek), Knox Co in 1820. Brush Creek is now in Rockcastle and Goose Creek is in Clay - I suppose they could extend into both counties. It appears that Woodred was, indeed, scouting the KY area around the time of Betsy's birth. But in 1820 her family was in Knox. Why would she go "back" to Clay Co?? It doesn't make much sense unless the word "back" was referring to Hezekiah. I can't find any Smallwoods on tax lists or who had land grants in that area prior to 1835 but there were Ragans & Broughtons on the KY Land Grants list:
KY Land Grants Ragan, Owen 50 H 8-29-1821 Knox Big Poplar Cr Ragan, John 50 H 8-29-1821 Knox Fk Big Poplar Cr Ragan, Owen 100 R 7-31-1822 Knox Fk Big Poplar Cr
Broughton, Jesse 50 F 1-20-1818 Knox Goose Cr Broughton, Job 50 I 3- 8-1821 Knox Goose Cr Broughton, Woodard 50 N 3- 6-1822 Knox Fk Stinking Cr Broughton, Woodard 50 N 3- 7-1822 Knox Stinking Cr
The only Smallwood in that area during that time period was that Elijah that I haven't identified. He may be the son of Smallwood/Philpot who were in Madison, KY in 1810 but his birth date was earlier than 1784. Also I show that their son Elijah didn't marry until 1815 in Mississippi - unless he was married prior to that to another person. I don't think this Elijah is him.
Elijah Smallwood found in:
Census Microfilm Records: Kentucky, 1810 Census State: Kentucky County: CLAY Locale: NO TWP LISTED Series: M252 Roll: 9 Part: 1 Page: 160 Elijah Smallwood Males: 0 0 1(16-26) 0 0 - born between 1784 and 1794 Females: 1 0 1 0 0
I suppose Hezekiah could have been associated with this family, however, like I said in one of my recent email, there were no males his age in this household. I'll do some more searching on Genealogy.com since Ancestry.com doesn't seem to have a complete index.
People were moving around a lot and the borders were changing like crazy. After I analyze the maps and dates maybe I can get a clearer picture.
Thanks again,
Sandy

Betsy Broughton was born in Clay in 1807, so the "back" fits and yes I had noticed that word. Yes, lots of our ancestors jumped counties by just moving to a farm across a border. Oh, what fun!

Email to MA 1/12/05:
MA - I've been reading the History of Knox, KY and I found this interesting....
<http://www.tcnet.net/ky/knox/decker.html> Big Poplar Creek now is in Whitley County...... Knox County, as first established, included what may well be said Southeastern Kentucky. In 1806 Clay County was formed from Madison, Knox and Floyd; in 1810 Rockcastle from Lincoln, Pulaski, Madison and Knox; in 1818 Whitley from Knox; in 1819 Harlan from Knox; in 1825 Laurel from Whitley, Rockcastle, Clay and Knox;
Big Poplar Creek was where Owen Ragan settled; it appears to be close to Laurel and Rockcastle counties.
I just can't get it out of my head: three Smallwoods were married in Knox Co. KY between 1820 and 1822 and yet there were no Smallwoods listed in census records in that county. All the Smallwoods were living quite a bit north and/or west of there in Hardin, Bath, Fayette, Jefferson, Montgomery and Shelby. However, there were Broughtons, Moores, Ragans, Hoppers, Evans, Prewitts, Edwards, and Lawsons - all people who were associated with our people in Rockcastle and Laurel. The Smallwoods who eventually settled in Clay Co weren't there yet. Apparently, Hezekiah, Edy and Polly Smallwood were in Knox County before any other Smallwoods were near there. Since Owen Ragan married Jonathan Smallwood's widow, the clues are really strong in pointing to him as being Hezekiah's father. I've downloaded a form to request the marriage bond records for Jonathan Smallwood and India Howard, hoping there will be a date on them. If they were married before 1799, that will be just one more clue.

MA - I just wanted to follow up on my previous email regarding my theory about Jonathan Smallwood and India Howard and present a 2nd theory. Here's a little timeline analysis:

IN 1820 OWEN RAGEN WAS IN BIG POPLAR CREEK, KNOX, KY (also there: Broughton-Jesse, Woodred, Will, Job; Evans (5); John Lawson, Blaggrove Hopper; Moores (9), Christopher Howard) Owen Ragan (300011-00102) age 45+ (the male age 20-30 could be Hezekiah Smallwood)
1820 - Knox, KY - Edy Smallwood marries John Edwards, Polly Smallwood marries John Lawson
1820 Census - Stinking Creek, Knox, KY On same page with Woodred and Jesse Broughton John Lawson Males: 0(0-10) 2(10-16) 1(16-18) 2(18-26) - born bet 1794 and 1802 Females: 0 0 1(16-26) 1(26-45)

1822 - Knox, KY - Hezekiah and Elizabeth are married
Since Hez & Eliz were married by the same minister in the same county only 2 years after Polly Smallwood married John Lawson and Edy Smallwood married John Edwards - and the fact that there were no Smallwoods listed in Knox, KY in 1820, indicates the possibility that these Smallwoods were being raised by someone other than their own parents. One of them could be the daughter of Jonathan Smallwood listed in the 1810 census and possibly the sister of Hezekiah (b. 1799).
Smallwood/Philpot's son John went to Lawrence, TN before 1815 and his son Elijah went from TN to Clay, KY before 1835. If Hezekiah was the son of Jonathan then this Elijah would have been his 2nd cousin.
If Hezekiah was the son of Jonathan, he may have had a brother. There were two young males in the 1810 household. There was an Elijah Smallwood in Harlan, KY in 1850. He was in Perry, KY in 1860 and Greenup, KY in 1870. He was born abt. 1809 in NC and I haven't been able to identify him. Harlan, KY is close to these other counties. There was also an unidentified Elisha and Elijah Smallwood in Sullivan, TN in 1830 and in Scott, VA in 1840 (these counties are near each other near the SW corner of VA where TN, VA, NC and KY meet) . Surry, NC is in the NW corner of NC very near these counties. You sent me the wife's name of Elisha Smallwood in Scott, VA - her name was Jane Green. All of these people are unknown to me. I can't find them in my database. I've attached a map showing the location of these counties. The red square indicates their general locations. Located within that square are Surry NC, Scott VA, Sullivan TN and Harlan KY. Harlan, KY is next to Knox, KY. It is possible they were part of those who were in Surry, NC in 1810 and may be related to Hezekiah.

There was a Stephen Ring listed as the witness to the marriage of Jonathan Smallwod and India Howard. He was married to Rachel Smallwood. I think she was a daughter of Elijah Smallwood Sr. - Jonathan's sister, but there's no proof of that. I've done a bit of research on the Ring family and it appears most of them did not go to KY. However, there was a Lucius Ring living in Rockcastle, KY in 1850 - same time as Hez & Eliz. He was born abt 1813 in NC. I haven't been able to find him in other census records. I'm in the process of researching the descendants of Stephen Ring and I'll let you know if anything interesting turns up.
Anyway, there's probably no way to proove any of this, but if Hezekiah was the son of Jonathan then his grandfather was Elijah Smallwood, Sr. and his ancestry can be traced back as follows:
Hezekiah>Jonathan>Elijah Sr>William>James>Lt. Col. James who migrated from England>Matthew from England
------------------THEORY #2
Also located within that red square on the map is Russell Co, VA. This is where the wife and son of Stephen Ring (witness to marriage of India Howard and Jonathan Smallwood) were living. Also on the tax rolls were many familiar Smallwoods and one that I can't identify - Zadock Smallwood. I believe he was closely related to Smallwood/Philpot.

Zadock was in Salisbury, Rowan Co NC 1800 Census and 1810 Washington Co VA census. Also in Rowan NC in 1800 was William Smallwood. I believe this was Wm who married Sarah Philpot. He ended up in Shelby Co KY and some of his descendants went to Clay Co. Zadock was born between 1774 and 1784. It looks like Zadock was living close to James Bidon Smallwood in 1811 and close to Wm Smallwood and Sarah Philot in 1800. William's brothers John and Elijah were living in Surry Co, NC in 1800.
Anyway, we now have two Smallwoods (Zadock and Hezekiah) roaming around NC/VA with no identifiable parents. It's a possiblity that Zadock was Hezekiah's father. He may have died before 1820 and maybe that's why he doesn't show up in census records after 1810, however the name Zadock is a very unusual family name and Hezekiah did not name any of his children Zadock. There are also several other records on Zadock in Russell, VA.
ALL CONJECTURE! I'm still leaning toward theory #1 due to the fact that Hezekiah was in Knox, KY same time as Owen Ragan and the Broughtons - same time period as Hezekiah's marriage there.

Emails to/from Juanita:
Sandy,
Wow, you have done much work on this side of the family. Congrats...
As I said, I haven't done much research here.... someday..
But, this all looks like a reasonably good path to follow.
Have put my efforts into the Philetus Johnson that married Nancy Jane Smallwood. Think I have found him, his family, etc. If so, he is buried in Fulton Co., OH.
Also, trying to join the DAR and putting most all my efforts into getting proof on ancestors and my links to the Patriot. It is a lot of work.... I should have written down where I found my information and got copies of original documents at that time.
Now, I have to backtrack and get those copies.
Now, if my DAR membership lady would recoup fast so she can help me go through this maze! She just had lung surgery and hopefully she is doing well.
Yes, I would like whatever data you might have. We have made a trip (7-9 years ago) to Rockcastle, KY (think that was it) going by my memory here (and that's questionable)... ha...
But, have folders full of info... and never put it together.... another item to put on my 'to do' list.
Thanks, Juanita

Juanita - I've been tossing around the idea that our Lem might be the one who was in Rutherford North Carolina. There is quite a bit on the internet about that family but not much about Lemuel. Below are the census records - he seems to disappear from Rutherford NC after 1840 - our Lem seems to suddenly appear in Laurel, KY in 1850 - could be the same person. The Lemuel in Rutherford NC married Margaret. I did a test census analysis to see if the family members in the households of 1800, 1810, 1820 and 1830 make sense and it's pretty close. According to a descendant this family went back and forth between Giles Co, TN and Rutherford, NC quite a bit. I could never figure out how Mary Margaret Smallwood was born in Tennessee but this could explain it. One of this Lemuel's sons was Isaac and I found an Isaac in Rockcastle Co, KY in 1850 - but he was born in KY so I don't know if it's him. He also had a son James and there was a James Moore in Laurel Co, KY in 1840 b. abt 1800/1805. He shows up in Giles, TN in 1850. He may have died before 1860 - there was a Nancy Smallwood in Rockcastle KY in 1860 - looks like a widow - could be his widow. Anyway, I haven't found anything that conflicts with this theory yet.
I have more info on them if you want it. Let me know what you think about this idea.
Thanks, Sandy

I saw your database on the internet and I have reason to believe that my ancestor was Lemuel Moore, son of George Moore and Martha. The only census records I've found that I'm 100% sure of are in Laurel Co KY in 1840 and 1850. I have found a Lemuel Moore the right age in 1800, 1810 and 1820 Rutherford NC but he is no longer there after 1820. My Lemuel was born before 1772 in VA and I can find no other Lemuel Moores prior to 1840 born that early - other than the one in Rutherford NC. I can't find him in 1830 unless he is the one who is in Giles TN. I sent for the census records but they are very difficult to read and I can't find him listed even though he's indexed there on Ancestry.com. He was indexed as Lemuel H. Moore. I believe he had several children/grandchildren born in TN and his wife was born in TN - see 1850 census below. I think Ann is not his first wife. I was hoping you could provide assistance in my research on Lemuel.

I've also been trying to connect the Moores who were in Greene Co TN from Pennsylvania to those who went to Knox and Laurel Co KY - I found this quite interesting.....

Doss, Lemuel Moore, Reuben Evans, Joseph Turney, Thomas Simpson, John Martin, Watson Cantrell, David Fisher, William Scott, Samuel Strong, Henry Burton, Martin Phillips, John Frazier, Joel Cheatham, Jonathan Fuston, Peter Reynolds and James Batey, all holding commissions as justices for Dekalb County, met at the house of Bernard Richardson, on Fall Creek, and organized the county court by electing Lemuel Moore, chairman. The several county officers produced their certificates of election, qualified and entered upon the discharge of their respective duties, and the wheels of the Government were set in motion. The court continued to meet at Richardson's house until the completion of the log courthouse. The circuit court of Dekalb County was also organized at Richardson's, the first session being held on the second Monday in August, 1838, over which Judge A. J. Marchbanks presided. The chancery court was organized at the courthouse in Smithville in March, 1844, by Chancellor B. L. Ridley.

Liberty, situated on the pike, seven miles from Alexandria, has a population of about 500, and was founded in about 1800 by Adam Dale, and names in honor of the founder's home in Maryland. The first house was built by William Givens. ---- Walk was the first merchant, and was followed by Fite & Duncan, ---- Young, Moore & price, Benjamin Bloyds, Joshua Bratton, and Leonard Moore, all of whom were in business before the late war. Since the war, Eli Vick, Fate Hale, Overall & Hale, Columbus Vick, and Elija Bratton were the merchants, and at present the business is conducted by the following firms: Hale & Son, William Vick & Son, and James Pritchett, General merchandise; D. D. Overall, drugs, etc.; James Pritchett, hotel.

James Moore (b. abt 1879), the son of William F. Moore and Catherine Milburn (I believe she was the 1st of 3 wives including Martha Overbay and Tilitha Bussell) was in Wilton, Knox Co, KY in 1910 and 1920. In 1930 James was in Corbin, Whitley, KY. Corbin is the same town where some other people from Laurel Co moved including descendants of Thomas Young who married Mary E. Moore, daughter of Hiram Moore. Hiram has not been connected to William F. Moore yet, but it's possible that they are closely related. If so, that could mean that Lemuel Moore (probable grandfather of Wm. F. Moore) was also related to Hiram Moore. Hiram was the son of Moses Moore who was in Greene Co TN until abt 1805 when he moved to Laurel Co KY. Lemuel wasn't listed in Greene Co TN but there was a Samuel and those names are very similar - it could have been a misspelled name. Moses was born abt 1762 in VA and Lemuel was born abt 1772 in VA. Both were in TN and ended up in Laurel Co. There's a chance that the father of Moses (and possibly the father of Lemuel) was a James Moore from PA (b. abt 1735) who could have been related to Anthony Moore from PA. James was also in Greene Co TN in early 1800's. Anthony was in Greene Co TN from abt 1783 until he died there in abt 1822. Anthony's family is well documented and none of them moved to Laurel Co. Most of them stayed in TN. David Moore was his only son. Another possible link: a descendant of Lemuel Moore indicated to me that she was told her ancestors were from PA.

I have suspected for some time that Lemuel was related to Moses but could not find a connection. The fact that his gr-grandson moved to the same town as a descendant of Moses Moore give me at least a slight connection.

The following information shows that SC was part of TN before TN became a state. Lemuel's children were born in TN so it makes sense that he would be in SC in 1800:
Who were the siblings and parents of your James Fowler? I am looking for

There was a Lemuel Moore in Laurens, SC 1800 at the same time as Ephraim Moore, son of Thomas Moore and Rosannah Fowler whos family was in Knox Co KY by 1802. The chances are good that Lemuel was related to this Moore family. He may have been a nephew of Thomas Moore.

I found a few Moores near Stinking Creek, Knox Co KY in 1820. Didn't see them before because they were indexed as Woon and Wood. Isaac, Aaron and John - could be related to Lemuel

In Little Raccoon (Little Rockcastle):

John Moor (120001-00101) - age 45+

There are other references to Isaac in Knox Co. He was in Knox Co in 1830. There was an Isaac Moore in Laurel Co KY in 1860 whose children were born in TN - he wasn't there before 1860. He could be related to Lemuel as well as the older Isaac who was Knox Co KY in 1803-1806) I'm still looking. The people listed with Isaac on the following tax lists are Thomas who married Rosannah Fowler, his son Jesse (may have been the Jesse Moore who helped formed Laurel Co), an unknown William (may have been the one who filed for Rev War Pension in 1835 Rockcastle Co), and unknown John Moore (see notes below). Thomas and Rosannah's children are fairly well documented and there is no John, Isaac or Lemuel.

NOTES ON JOHN MOORE:
http://www.tcnet.net/ky/knox/decker.html
Apparently there was a John Moore in Stinking Creek, Knox Co KY by 1802:
A Knox County road order dated August 2, 1802, reads as follows: "Beginning at the State Road near the house of Thomas Goodin, leaving the house and plantation of the said Goodin on the right hand, thence nearly along the now Trace up Stinking, leaving the house and plantation now occupied by John MOORE on the left hand, still keeping along the present trace, leaving the house and plantation whereon John Baker now lives on the right hand, still continueing nearly along said trace to the head branch of the left hand fork of Stinking Creek to the top of the ridge dividing the waters of Stinking Creek from the waters of Goose Creek."

Could the Polly Moore referred to below be related to John Moore?
Knox County Court August Term 1865.
The report of Allen Goodin gate keeper of Knox Country for this quarter ending 26th August, 1865 was this day produced to Court, sworn to and ordered of record, as follows, to wit: the amount of toll taken in at the Toll Gate at Polly Moore's (Log Mountain) in Knox County was $258.90, after taking the gate keeper's salary for his services for the quarter $43.75, leaves to be expended on the roads $536.90, on the State Road $413.01, on the Goose Creek Road $125.89.

MOSES LEMUEL MOORE
Male
Birth: 06 OCT 1860 , Washington, Tennessee
Death: 22 JAN 1924
Parents:
Father: JAMES MOORE - could be the James Moore who was in early Greene Co TN
Mother: LULITICA SEXTON CARSON - there were Carsons in early Greene Co TN

What if our Lemuel is actually the Moses or James Moore who was in Greene Co TN with Anthony? There were a lot of James's in that group and maybe he decided to go by his middle name to avoid confusion. OR - what if Lemuel was actually the Jesse Moore who served in the original group who formed Laurel County? Lemuel's wife was Ann. I found this will of Jesse Moore (Lemuel disappears from census records after 1850, so the timing is right):

Whereas Jesse MOORE late of Laurel County and state of Kentucky departed this life domiciled in the county and state aforesaid having first made and published his last will and testament which was after his death duly proven and admitted to record in the Laurel County Court in which will then is the following clause, to wit: The first of my Devisees is my beloved wife whom I will shall have one third of my entire estate both real and personal after the payments of my debts during her natural life and after that to be equally divided between my children or such of them as is by my will made devisees or she may elect to take a child's part absolutely or she may elect to take one thousand dollars instead of either of the above specifications: Now in persuance of the provision of said will, I, Margaret Ann MOORE widow of the said Jesse MOORE do by these presents elect to take under said will the bequest of one thousand dollars in preferance and intead of either of the other provisions made for me by said will.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of June 1859.
Margaret Ann MOORE
State of Kentucky, Laurel County

Jesse was married to Margaret Ann Cathers and they had a daughter named Nancy in 1802. Nancy Moore who married Joseph Pruitt (believed to be the daughter of Lemuel) was born about that time. Also Jesse Moore was born in Culpepper Co VA. Lemuel was born in VA at close to the same time.

What if Lemuel was actually Jesse Lemuel Moore? Or James Lemuel Moore? Or Moses Lemuel Moore?

I will start to search in this direction and see what else I can come up with.

Thanks!
Sandy

Jim - I was checking your database and found another possible connection. Lemuel Moore's other daughter, Nancy, married Joseph Pruitt - they were living next door to Lemuel in 1850 Laurel Co KY. In your database is a Mary Magdelene Pruitt married to William Moore. I think we may be on to something here....
