I was quite surprised to learn that some Smallwoods lived in the same KY county as another branch of my mother's family. I know it's a small world - and it was much more likely back in the 1850's that this could occur (lower population), but it was still quite surprising. It made me wonder if the two families knew each other before some of them ended up in Missouri. Genealogy is so darned fascinating!

The possibility that the Tillerys knew the Smallwoods back in KY is VERY interesting indeed, although the chances are it is just a coincidence. Mary Ellen Tillery's grandfather, William N. Tillery, was born in Buncombe Co KY in abt. 1826. He was in Jackson Co, KY (formed from Rockcastle, Owsley, Madison, Clay, Estill, Laurel
McKee) in 1850 and moved to Grundy Co, MO between 1856 and 1859. Her uncle, George Washington Tillery had a land grant in Clay Co, KY in 1853.

15. Mary Marinda SMALLWOOD was born in Sep 1865 in Missouri. She died about 1935 in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon. [Parents]

Betty Jane Branson, Mary's granddaughter, recalls knowing Mary in her childhood. Mary was stricken with rheumatoid arthritis in her later years and was confined to a wheel chair. Betty recalls that Mary lived with them on several occasions. Betty's father, Gus Oren, loved to tell jokes and Betty remembers her grandmother laughing uproariously at Oren's joke telling. She was quite a sight to see, with no teeth, laughing loudly, and slapping her hands on the arms of her wheel chair. She was quite a character.
