Per email from Phil Harris (pharris@whitleynet.org)
Isaac Branson of Delaware County Indiana served in the 19th Indiana Infantry that was part of the famous "Iron Brigade". He took part in the battle of Gettysburg on July 1st 1863 and was wounded in the knee. The confederate unit that the 19th Indiana fought that day was the 26th North Carolina. In the ranks of the 26th North Carolina were Eli and William Branson of Chatham County North Carolina. This is the same county that Levi Branson (1732-1823) and his brother Eli Branson (1734-1797) had many of their children. I'm in the early stages of trying to connect these three Branson's together. I believe they are all descendants of Thomas L Branson Sr. (1670/1671 - 1744) If I can connect Eli and William Branson to the same Branson family tree as Isaac Branson it would not only show "family" fighting on different sides during the war but also fighting directly against each other in one of the most famous battles of the Civil War.

Sandra

I've read all your e-mails on this topic and again I thank you for
all your hard work. I think you have about nailed it all down confirming
that the Bransons fought against each other at the battle of Gettysburg.

I'm fairly confident that Isaac Branson, son of John Branson and Mary
Chipman is the person that served in the 19th Indiana and not Isaac
H. Branson son of Mahlon Branson and Margaret Chipman. The reason
I say this is because I have over 100 pages of Isaac's military and pension
papers and at no time is there a middle initial mentioned. His age at time
of enlistment matches the 1833 date of birth. It does mention
a Robert S. Branson in a letter referring to the estate of Isaac Branson after
Isaac's death. Isaac Branson had two sons, Rollie and Robert S.

The Isaac that served in the 19th Indiana is # 527 on your web site.
You have him showing up in the 1880 Missouri Federal Census, age
47 which again proves his date of birth as 1833. I do know that he spent
some time in Missouri in the early 1880's. My pension papers show Isaac
being examined in Missouri by a doctor in 1881 and 1882. Your web site
states that he died in Missouri in 1880 but in fact he died Nov. 2nd 1897.
His last pension check was paid on Oct. 4th 1897 from the U.S. Pension
Agency out of Chicago Illinois. I believe he died in Bureau County Illinois
but I have yet to confirm that.

Your e-mail stating that William and Eli Branson who served in the 26th North Carolina
were the sons of Thomas M.P. Branson who's father was Eli Branson sounds very solid.
Another "Branson Family" web site from "Family Tree Maker" states that Eli Branson,
father of Thomas M.P. Branson, had the middle name of "William". It sounds very logical
that Thomas M.P. Branson would name a son Eli and another son William after their grandfather,
Eli William Branson.

I'll spend some time putting together some sort of article based on the information I have
on Isaac and information I can gather from William and Eli. I think your right, it would make
for some interesting reading. I can tell you that Isaac was wounded three times. One of those
times was at the battle of South Mountain on Sept. 14th 1862. He was shot in the head behind
the right ear. That bullet remained in is skull for the rest of his life.

Again I thank you very much for all your work on this and if there's anything I can do to
help you let me know.

Phil

Email from Phil:
Hi Sandy,

I've been researching Isaac Branson of the 19th Indiana for over a year now and
finally made a trip to Bureau County Illinois on my motorcycle this past weekend.
This was the last place I knew where he was before he died in 1897. I found the following
article about his death in the local newspaper dated Nov. 11, 1897.

" Our community was greatly shocked last week Wednesday to hear that Isaac Branson
had been kicked by a horse and was dead. The particulars as learned at the inquest are
as follows. On Tuesday at 4 o'clock Isaac and his son John returned from Bureau to their
home in Arispie. John went to the house to prepare supper and his father to the barn to
attend the horse which they had driven. When supper was ready John went to the barn to
call his father and found him lying near the horse motionless and thinking he had been kicked,
drew him away from the horse and ran up to J.W. Mavity's house and asked them to get the
doctor. Joseph Langtree immediately started to Bureau for the Doctor, and Mrs. Mavity and hired
men went to see the fallen man and found him dead, and by examination concluded
he must have fallen immediately upon entering the stable, as he was cold as one
who had been dead that length of time. As Mr. Branson had two paralytic strokes, prior to this
time, it is thought he was stricken with a third one on entering the stable and died instantly, as the
horse had not been fed. Isaac Branson was born in Muncie, Indiana on Sept. 19, 1833 and died
Nov. 2, 1897, aged 64 years. He served in the late war as lieutenant and received three balls
in his person, one of which was in his head which he carried to his grave. J.P. Spaulding
preached the funeral sermon, after which the G.A.R. boys accompanied the remains to the
Bureau cemetery, where they were buried from our site. About forty vehicles were in the
procession, which showed that the people had no ill will but rather love for the deceased."

Isaac married Amanda Hughes daughter of Hugh Hughes and Eliza on 16 Apr 1865 in Delaware Co., Indiana. Amanda was born about 1848 in Indiana.

HIRAM BRANSON
http://www.rootsweb.com/~indelawa/HiramBranson_bio.htm

Hiram Branson is a man approaching 70 years, and has spent his life in such a manner as to command the repsect of his neighbors, and meet with the approval of his conscience. He was born in Highland county, Ohio, May 4, 1825; being the son of Elizabeth and Robert Branson; the former was born in North Carolina (that's as printed), in 1798 and the latter was born in Virginia in 1802. Robert Branson settled in Highland county, Ohio, with his grandfather when a boy, going there on a pack horse. He was one of the first settlers of Henry county, Ind., reaching there in 1827. In the spring of 1840 he came to Delaware county, Ind, where he engaged in farming until his death which took place in 1852. Hiram Branson remained at home until his marriage, which occurred July 27, 1848; his wife being Miss Charlotte Jackson, daughter of Jesse and Mary Jackson, both natives of Tennessee. Mr. Branson had born to him by this marriage the following children: Rufus, Isaac, Sarah, Noah C., John, Jerry S., Martin, Phebe Jane, and Oliver P. Mr. Branson married again January 20, 1865, his choice being the widow of Wilson Lacy; her first husband being a native of Tennessee and a farmer. This wife was called away from earth in August, 1877; having borne Mr. Branson five children, as follows: Frances, Martha, George, Cynthia Ann, and Cora May, deceased. Mr. Branson married a third time, September 27, 1878, the maiden name of hs wife being Susanna Burgess, the widow of Jacob Jetmore. By this wife there was one child, Clara Ellen. He and his wife are both members of the German Baptist Church.

Mr. Branson enlisted during the war in company B, One Hundred and Forty-seventh Indiana regiment, for one year, or during the war. This was in February, 1865, and he returned home May 22 of that year, having been in no battle. Our subject was a Whig, after which he became a republican, and is now a prohibitionist.

J.H. Branson was born in Stony Creek township, Henry county Indiana, February 10, 1831, and lived with his parents until he was of age, after which he worked for his father two years on the farm, and then went to California. There he remained two years engaged in mining, which proved profitable; then he returned to this township and bought eighty acres of land, which is his present farm, and is under good cultivation. He was united in marriage July 6, 1856, to Miss Mary Fox, daughter of Asa and Mary Fox; her mother being a native of Connecticut, and her father of Pennsylvania.

The father, when a young man, located in Kentucky, where he remained thirty years, and then came to Harrison township. The mother of the wife of our subject was a member of the Methodist church.

By his marriage with Miss Fox our subject had the following children: Elizabeth, Sara Ann, Ellen Martha, George W., Premma, William, deceased, Joseph, William Jehoshaphat, deceased, Edward J., Asa, deceased, Flora Belle and Mary Minnie. In politics Mr Branson was a whig until the republican party came into existence, since which time he has been an active member of that party. He is a member in good standing of the Christian church, and is a worthy and good citizen.
