That's a good guess, but Hezekiah and Catherine were in Maryland in 1790 and 1800. Hezekiah was born in NC or VA. There's another possiblity: Elijah Smallwood (son of William Smallwood and Mary or Ann Grant) may have been Hezekiah's grandfather. Elijah's son, Jonathan, died in 1812 in NC with 2 sons under the age of 11 and one daughter. One of those sons could have been Hezekiah who may have been raised by Elijah Jr (Jonathan's brother). In 1820 Elijah Jr. had a male age 16-18 living with him who was not living with him in 1810. Several descendants of William Smallwood (Elijah Sr's father) ended up in or near Clay, Harlan and Rockcastle Co, KY - the same area where Hezekiah lived in 1850 - including William Smallwood and Sarah Philpot. I've shared this theory with another researcher who has been researching this family for about a decade. She doesn't agree with it, but I still think it's a possiblity since we can't find any other branches of the Smallwood family living in that area of Kentucky at that time (with the exception of an Abijah Smallwood whose name may have been misspelled - he may have been Elijah). Jonathan Smallwood married Mary Indes "India" Howard. I found her in 1850 in Whitley Co, KY - her last name was Ragan and she was widowed at the time. Whitley Co is fairly close to Rockcastle and Clay Co. the following person was found in census records 1850: Owen Ragan 40 KY (born abt 1810) Nancy or Nany Ragan 44 1805 Kentucky Female District 2, Whitley, KY India Ragan 80 (born abt 1769) North Carolina Female District 2, Whitley, KY 1850 Peggy Ragan 29 1820 Kentucky Female District 2, Whitley, KY (born abt 1821) Hezekiah had a land grant in Rockcastle, KY in 1847. In 1852 there was a Rockcastle, KY land grant for E. Smallwood. This may have been a descendant of Smallwood/Philpot or Smallwood/Grant. Again, other researchers do not agree with this, but who knows?? I would like to see a copy of Jonathan's will that was probated in 1812. Does anyone know who might have a copy?
